B1G Week #3...

Two weeks into the season and we have a few things to talk about...

"Dante's inferno"

Despite the less than stellar competition the Oregon Ducks and Dante Moore are certainly in mid-season form already! The path that Moore has taken into being the #1 guy on a top 10 team is an interesting one and a valuable lesson for many others. He was thrown into the mix too early and likely a "NIL baby" but he learned from that and decided to watch as a backup last year. Lessons learned. He and the Ducks offense are off and rolling!

"Rutgers Defense"

Listen, Rutgers won this game by 28 points but we need to dive in a bit deeper -- a putrid Miami offense had nearly 375 yards with only 21 mins of possession! They averaged 8.4 ypp. Finn ate them up, the rare times they had the ball. This is a bad omen and hopefully is good for us in betting their games moving forward.

"Going through the motions"

This is and will be Penn State with the lack of competition. They led 20-0 entering the 4th quarter. Simply put, they are waiting till the bigger games perhaps to show some stuff? I remember the 2023 National Champions also had a blah schedule to start and sometimes vets just can't get up totally for these games.

"Year 3"

This is the 3rd year for Coach Rhule in Lincoln. This is also the 2nd year for their highly rated QB. You can sort of see things coming together a bit for this school. The 3rd year is so many times when things take shape after a coaching change. The Akron game was 728 yards of offense, 31 first downs and 10.0 ypp. On the other end, the defense held the Zips to 175 yards and 3.0 ypp.

Pure Domination

Next up is another warm-up before a big one at home to Michigan. The Wolverines aren't a title contender this year but still would be a benchmark win for Rhule. The schedule afterwards sets up for a very nice run into November. Other than a Friday night game in Minnesota, this should be easy sledding for the Huskers into the USC game Nov 1st. Looking way too far ahead, but goodness the November 22nd game in Happy Valley could be VERY important.

"Points galore in Southern Cal"

The offense is off and running for the Trojans this year in two games vs soft opponents. USC is averaging 66 ppg so far. They have amassed 559 and 755 yards in their first two games. While the defense hasn't given up massive amounts of yards, you can see that better opponents will move the ball a bit. They criss-cross the country in the next few weeks (@Purdue, home to MSU and @Illinois).

*BIG BET potentially in their next home game

"No longer Joe Moore... "

Simply put, through 2 games, my biggest worry with Michigan is their offensive line. The two long runs vs New Mexico covered up some warts. This past game, one more long run helped the stats but the fact is this line is below average in the run blocking department. The pass blocking is to be determined. Oklahoma is a playoff caliber team and their defense is above-average. Conversely, the game plan was pretty lousy. As Hunt will tell ya, less tempo and many opined about how bunched up the formations were. Everything played into OU's hands to be honest.

The Michigan defense wasn't too bad overall, despite losing 2 starters during the game and missing one for the first half. They faced a dark horse Heisman candidate and didn't truly fall apart until that 8-9 min drive in the 4th. Their fate was sealed after that.

Any way you look at things, the Mich OL will determine a lot for their games this year. This is a bad start and they need to find something before this gets out of hand.

Bonus note: Bryce won't be running. They have no depth and the staff isn't looking to be without their #1 guy.

Bonus note 2: Bryce will be fine. Great learning experience in a tough stadium vs a VERY good team. This year is about building for runs in '26 and '27.

"Sparty On"

The faithful are very happy in East Lansing and who wouldn't be after a nice double OT win? This was one of the very worst 3rd quarter teams last season but Saturday night was a HUGE step in the right direction there. Michigan St moved the ball around nicely and Chiles is protecting the ball very well.

But, that pass defense is atrocious. BC won most of that box score and take away a weird 3rd and they may have won this in regulation. You can take a hint from an earlier part of this thread about a play down the road from your ole buddy Reno...

OK, let us move onto Week #3...

UCLA is in big trouble and faces a New Mexico team that plays hard and until the final whistle. This could be interesting...

The Oregon show goes on the road to NW to face those cats! This is an early start for the Ducks, so we must take that into account. The 9am body clock is real. I kinda want to stalk this one for a slow start.

Wisconsin off that explosion the last 3 quarters vs MTSU heads down to Alabama to face the Tide. We'll take a peak at SEC thread for some more insights. I honestly do not know what to think of the Badgers after 2 completely different games.

This is not the first time Penn State and Nova have played in recent years... frankly a bit ridiculous... sigh...

USC and Purdue is a game I'll cap a bit harder tomorrow. I have some full game over leans right off the bat. This is NOT a noon start which helps a lot. Now, USC did struggle crossing the Mississippi last year and the grass length will be interesting as well...

Minnesota and Cal is low-key a fun game -- kinda. Minnesota has looked pretty good so far and will be a bowl team no doubt. I think we can count on them for one upset at some point as well. Cal with a cupcake and also beat up on Oregon State. We'll receive a short tariff on the Gophers in a road game that I'll be looking at on the live market.

Admittedly, I am skipping some of these ridiculous matches. I'm more than willing to discuss if anyone has angles on them. We'll go from there...

More Mich-CMU talk once the injuries start to finalize themselves... Biff will coach this week against the Chips... Good week to work on some stuff before the trip to Lincoln, Nebraska.

Think I have a pretty good feel for nebraska now. Defense is very gettable. You can run on them, the middle is soft. Secondary is good but not near as good as their numbers. Akron dropped several passes. If you put Ty Robinson and Nash Hutmacher on this team, they're in the playoff. Saw much more blitzing this week, which is more what we saw in the bowl from Butler. Maybe they don't feel great blitzing mobile QBs like Sorsby was in the opener. Be interesting what the plan is in two weeks.

On offense, we're really thin at RB with Johnson going to take most of the action against competent teams. Pretty deep at WR and our TE play has been good as well. Need to see Raiola do it against a big time D, but he's looked good so far. Dropped a few great balls in there against Akron. Pretty sure he got hurt against Cincy which limited downfield passing in the 2h. OL has been very good in pass pro, not quite as good on the ground.

Special teams worlds better. Kicker has looked great, punt return was good vs Akron. Kickoff return still not there. Punting was good vs Cincy, didn't punt vs Akron.

One of my absolute favorite moments ever. So good!

Brutus and Rufus 2.jpgrufus-brutus-p1.jpg

By now, you've probably seen the video: Ohio University mascot Rufus the Bobcat sideswiping, tackling and then punching Ohio State mascot Brutus the Buckeye prior to OSU's 43-7 home victory last Saturday.

Thing is, this wasn't a goofy skit.

According to a report in the Ohio University student newspaper, Rufus' sneak attack was exactly that -- a pre-planned beatdown of an unsuspecting Brutus by the man inside the Bobcat costume, 19-year-old Brandon Hanning.

Page 2 caught up with Hanning to go inside the mind of a mascot killer discuss the incident:

1. We want to get something straight. Did you really come up with a plan to tackle Brutus a year ago? Did anyone know about it?

Yeah! I didn't know exactly how it would happen, but that was the whole reason I tried out for the Rufus job. I told my friends about it when I tried out. That was it. They thought it would be awesome.

2. Why did you want to tackle him so much?

The year before I went to Ohio, we played Ohio State and it was actually a pretty close game. For some reason, I remembered seeing the video of the Oregon Duck beating up another mascot. I thought it would be really funny if Rufus beat up Brutus.

3. Take us through your thought process. How and why did you decide that the best way to tackle Brutus would be to suit up as Rufus?

I figured this would be the best way to do it and get in the least amount of trouble.

3a. What kind of trouble have you gotten in?

Ohio told me to never attend another one of their athletic events. Which is fine by me. I don't even go to the school anymore. I lived about 10 minutes away from campus growing up. So I'll still be a fan. I just won't go to their games.

4. Being a mascot is hard work. What kind of time and effort did you invest in being Rufus over the course of the last year ... just so you would have the opportunity to tackle Brutus?

It took a lot of time. I did a bunch of games. It was pretty fun when I was doing it. I got to travel with the team and stuff. Being the mascot wasn't the fun part. It was just going around with everybody.

5. Was this your first act of mascot-on-mascot violence?

Before this, I actually got in a fight with the Buffalo mascot. He's a bull. I started it. I was thinking I should go ahead and try out tackling another mascot. I brought a red square cape thing, like in a bullfight. He was just playing around, acting like he was charging me. I tackled him and put him on the ground. It was pretty funny. No one got upset because it wasn't Ohio State.

6. What sort of Rufus-tackling plan or strategy did you have in your mind before the Ohio State game?

I did actually think that when he was leading the team out, that was when I was going to do it. I didn't have a plan beyond that. The day before, I was thinking about it the whole time. And before the game, I had a ton of adrenaline.

7. Take us through the incident. You first sideswiped Brutus as he was running across the field. What do you remember, and how were you feeling?

The first time I ran at him, when I hit him, my head started to come off. That's why I let go. After a year of being a mascot, it was instinct to try to keep the head on. I was unsuccessful, so I threw it back on and went back to finish what I started.

8. You then chased Brutus into the end zone, climbed on his back, rode him to the ground and punched him in the head. Again, what do you remember and what were you feeling?

I just jumped on him trying to get him to the ground. All I was thinking was to make it look good. I know at least five friends who were watching from the stands. Two of them knew I was going to do it.

9. Mascots aren't supposed to speak while in costume. Did you say anything to Brutus, and did he say anything to you?

No. Neither of us said anything. But I could definitely tell he was pretty pissed off about it. I was pretty much just hitting his foam head. I didn't want to hurt the guy inside. I just wanted to make him look stupid.

10. What happened next?

Security pulled me aside and told me to stand there for a minute. Then they came over and told me not to touch Brutus again. That was the end of it.

11. You're not even a student at Ohio University anymore. You attend nearby Hocking College. Do they have a rival mascot, and do you plan to tackle it?

I don't even think Hocking has a mascot. So I don't think so.

12. You've said that the reaction to your tackle has been either love or hate. What's the most loving feedback you've gotten, and what is the most hateful?

I had a couple of players tell me they thought it was pretty funny. The athletic people in charge, they didn't like it. Some people said that I deserve to have a statue built and put somewhere. The most hateful thing was someone saying I would probably be killed, and thanks to ESPN for giving out my name and where I go to school. I'm not really worried about that.

13. Do you have any other plots in the works? We promise we won't tell anyone.

Besides this, not really. This is the only thing I've ever done that took a year of planning to accomplish. And I honestly don't want to be Rufus anymore. This was the whole reason to do it, and I feel like it all happened like it was supposed to.

Make me a Nebraska Michigan line without thinking of goy lines, preseason, etc. just what you're eyes tell you. What you think it opens at per Vegas or whoever opens lines first and what you think it should be in your opinion. Tia

There is no respect for Wolv wr's. Oklahoma packed the line and that is what allowed the one Haynes breakaway.
IMO, a coaching problem on offense and an obvious weakness at wide receiver.

You're 100% right.

pick or maybe NU -1. seems like they will open michigan the favorite, but that doesn't really feel right to me.

Michigan offensive line, already not that good, is banged up some more.

El-Hadi left in the 1st half last week. He's out awhile.

Apparently another OL injury during practice this week as well.

Klein may be back at TE -- that's big for next week in Lincoln.

Rod Moore likely makes his first start since the National Championship game as well. A damn good veteran in the secondary who's a team leader. I'd assume he plays a bit this week and slowly builds reps each week.

Lean over in this game -- that's my only recommendation. Might play, might wait -- we'll see.

Other quick leans in the big ten...updated

Oregon game kicks at noon and I'll stick to my "stalk" here hoping for value on the TT at a lower # with slow start ..

Nothing in Tuscaloosa....

Likely live overs in West Lafayette...

I have over 51.5 +106 available in cbus... If I wanted to tail.. why is this plus money?.

No opinion in Champagne...

Iowa -- pass -- although gun to head full game over...

Minnesota -2.5 now, I like them to win the game but live stalk for myself...

Underwood running is a beautiful thing.

Interesting to hear after the game why they unleashed this during the Central Michigan game?

I like that that Nebraska has more to think about -- but at the same point there is no element of surprise.

There was much consternation all week about the lack of BU runs. Much like with JJ McCarthy, Michigan wasn't running BU due to lack of QB depth.

Interesting development...

Michigan -2.5 @ Nebraska

USC -14 vs Michigan State

Iowa -2.5 @ Rutgers

Indiana -2.5 vs Illinois

Very excited for next week.

As I noted just now in BA thread -- USC game will be a smorgasbord.

USC -14 -110 is in.

More excited for TTs and prob game over as well.

Stay tuned...

I'll be attacking AGAINST Sparty with very good passing offenses ..

I'll write this one up after we get the thread started tomorrow night.
