A rant about College Football

Pretty much a regular
There are a few things that need to change in order for college football to get back to the greatest and most entertaining game it used to be. I'm sure you will disagree with most of my complaints.

- Pass interference should be a spot foul. If you get beat, you don't get to tackle your opponent stopping a long TD and only get penalized a measly 15 yards.

- Referees get to hold the play up for only 5 seconds while the defenses make changes. After that the play starts whether the defense is ready or not.

- The referees get 4 reviews a game total and then whatever the call on the field is stands without review. Enough of reviewing every score. It's not necessary.

- Also, the refs have 2 minutes from the time they decide to review to a result. So, they better waddle their fat asses over to the monitor faster.

- If you don't have a winning record you don't get to go to a bowl. I know this is driven by money, but these games are horrible and not even 2,000 people in the stands is a joke. The towns don't get any revenue like they used to because there is nothing at all special about these bowls and there are 40 of them. I know you like to bet on them but seriously this is embarrassing to the college football.

- Finally, but most importantly, your get to transfer schools once in your life and be eligible to play a sport. Once. Not 4 times. Not 5 times. Once. I saw a stat the other day where there is exactly one college football player this year that is a 4 year starter at QB for his school. One in all the schools out there. The head coach of Coastal Carolina said today "You don't build programs anymore. You build this year's team and lose all your best players every year, so you have to do it again next year." The man is telling the truth, and it happens to every school out there no matter how big you are. You don't think you are being played correctly up to your MVP status? Fine. You can transfer but you better fucking choose wisely because you get one transfer. Why do these prima donnas need to go to 2, 3 or 4 schools? Stop this shit now or it will hurt the game forever.

- Oh, and the transfer portal doesn't open until after the final game is played for the year. They don't fucking need to have games until the end of January. I'm not naive enough to think education really matters to these players but they play football for 6 of the 9 months of the school year. That's ridiculous.

If you don't stop some of this shit now there will come a day when we wistfully say "Remember when college football was the best sport? Damn I miss that. I wonder what happened to it?"

You get to have two jobs in every 5 year period. Boss is an asshole, fine, better pick wisely when you take your next job.

All good points except disagree on the PI. Too more subjectivity involved to have a 50 yard penalty. And I know if a guy tackles a guy it's clear but all too often it's not.

There needs to be a hybrid on the PI yardage - some split between the punitive nature of a spot call and something more than the 15 yards (assuming the foul occurs beyond 15 yards).

Always appreciate it when people take a stand. I'll give my two cents with all due respect:

1. PI as a spot foul: Absolutely fucking not. If there's one thing that college football fans seem to agree on it's that referees are incompetent, regardless of conference. So we think it would be a good idea to give these incompetents even MORE power? We want these assholes to be able to call 50 yard penalties? No thanks. You enjoy that concept in the NFL? As for the intentional PI penalties that we think are happening, I would say, 1. It's happening about 5% of the amount people think it's happening and 2. 15 yards is a significant penalty. If you want to make a PI change in college, reduce OPI to 10 yards. That's one thing the NFL gets right. Many of those OPI calls are ticky tack and are certainly not worth the double whammy of losing the completion(in most cases) PLUS 15 yards. They are absolute drive enders, and in many cases it's just a receiver trying to extricate himself from a grabby DB. (I have less sympathy for offenses that run pick plays though. Penalize those fuckers)

2. Defensive substitutions. Don't really care about that. It actually penalizes an offense for disorganized substitutions. If you have to run a guy out there late on offense, you're probably looking at a delay of game.

3. Limited reviews. Nah. The first time they miss one egregiously, that rule would get shitcanned. Get us more of the expedited reviews and we won't care how many there are.

4. Limited time on the reviews: I could get behind that. If you can't figure it out with a couple looks, it's probably not "conclusive".

5. Under .500 bowl teams: Disagree. First, it very seldom happens, and second, if a 5-7 team is motivated and their kids want to be there, I say get them in thee, especially if the 6-6 teams don't want to play. Also, I am not offended by the existence of bowl games. If you hate them, don't watch. I hate pineapple on pizza, but I don't want it banned from people who like it. (Well, on second thought..)

6. Transfer limits: Everybody wanted to let these kids get paid, so the Pandora's box is open now. Limiting them in any way will get shot down in court. The Supreme Court bitch slapped the NCAA to kingdom come last year and they'll do it again, so they have no legal standing to stop kids from transferring or doing anything else for that matter. Lawyer/Agents are making too much money off this now, so they'll challenge that in a heartbeat. They only way it stops is if they become employees or if there are contracts deemed enforceable that get signed once the kids enroll in school. Again, people asked for it, and now they've got it, unintended consequences or not.

7. Transfer portal timing: No problem with that one, and agree with your point but I don't think moving it back would change much. Most of the kids have their mind made up long before the window opens and will announce right after the season ends that they will enter once it opens. They want to get the feelers out there and there's nothing stopping back channel stuff from going on anyway. Beau Pribula type situations seem pretty few and far between, and he might not have played anyway out of respect for his potential new school.

Amen on the defense getting 5 seconds. There is a team in the SEC that is notorious for slow playing those subs to draw delay of game penalties. They also happen to whine the most about anything a defense does to slow down their tempo on offense

The transfer portal window is due to semesters.

Eventually they'll change it as school is becoming mostly a joke as is.
The calendar right now is unsustainable. There's no way the NFL would have the draft, free agency and the playoffs all going on at the same time. I think Joel Klatt is the one that said move the games up a few weeks so that the season is completely over on Jan 1, then the transfer portal is open for one week. Three weeks is already too long. Like it was mentioned, these kids know where they are going before they enter the portal like 99% of the time. The ones who don't are probably better off staying put

I agree with Wire PI should be a spot foul in all levels of football. Shouldn’t be able to commit a penalty to be bailed out when you’re beat on a play. If you’re worried about refs making bad calls then allow it to be reviewed.
I will give CFB tons of credit for the way they handle OT its the best fairest way to decide a game that is tied at end of regulation. The nfl needs follow their lead on this because it works and is fair

So, when do we start the season?

Mid August?

If you're advocating to have pass interference reviewable, you've lost me. The process you're advocating for would be a million times worse than what we have now in an effort to fix a problem that doesn't really exist.

Utah takes the slow play approach on subs as well and I honestly think it hurts them more than it helps. I hate it, run in and run out and stay in a flow.

Maybe. I think he also advocated dropping a regular season game and conference champ games
Yes on conference championship games.

Take your division winners on each side and they make the playoffs.

Still WC slots avail after that (would be BIG and SEC mostly).

Please for the love of god no more reviews. Not convinced at all that they even reliably lead to more accurate outcomes. Things look different in slow-mo, so reviewing gets to be like looking at a different play. Games also take long enough as it is, and refs already have too much of an influence.

This is a pet peeve, but when did wearing actual football pants become uncool? Guys are out there playing football in legit shorts. Looks ridiculous IMO, but I'm old.

Yeah, Skattebo has set the bar the lowest.

Should be some sort of penalty for sporting this nonsense.
