Let's hear your top 5 in cfb next year. Also give me a sleeper QB not many know about. I'll go first. Just my preference. Tend to like athletic QBs more. More potential than anything.

1. Archie Manning
2. DJ Lagway
3. Lanorris Sellers
4. John Mateer
5. Cade Klubnik

Sleeper: Luke Altmyer

Great list @HUNT

You know I'm a big Mateer guy and think that was one helluva pickup.

Yes, I'll be a closet OU fan this year other than week #2 with a spicy future ticket in hand.

Cade might fully blossom this year. He was really ascending late in the frosh year until that Orange Bowl. Despite solid numbers as a sophomore, I didn't feel like he made the jump that he should have...

Then last year came along. He was damn good the last few months and that ratio was outstanding.

I won't hide the fact that a senior QB doing their thing is much rarer nowadays, but this could be one to remember. Team accomplishments will write the story when all said and done.

Sellers and Lagway are simply fun to watch. No drive is ever over with these two at the helm.

Arch speaks for himself. He'll have an early showcase game as well.

Altmeyer can be considered a sleeper, but at the same time his team has been receiving a lot of hype to do damage and sneak into the playoffs! I did take that flyer on Illinois to win the BIG 18 conference.

-----------

I will assume that Dampier will fit into the sleeper category for many. I'll let @Two Utes go into that more. I was blessed to watch a lot of his games late last year and find him to be one to watch, no doubt. We'll see with the step up in competition.

Avery Johnson, Diego, Leavitt and other holdovers will have their way.

CTG favorite, Haynes King figures into that sleeper category.

I purposely didn't mention Nuss -- rather grab @twinkie13 attention on that one.

I like Mateer too but I can't get the Wyoming game out of my head. He was terrible in that game. I think the step up in competition may expose him. I could be wrong and I expect him to put up some numbers but I still expect OU to be out of the top 1/4 of the conference.

As for Dampier. Utah's WR room has a lot of unknowns but he's going to have a good OL and RB's behind him. If Whittingham can keep his grubby hands away from Beck's offense I expect big things from Dampier. The negative Ute fans point to his 12 INTs last year but UNM was playing from behind on a regular basis. I'm very bullish on Utah this year but unfortunately I don't think their D will be a good as last year. With an even competent QB last year that team would have been in the mix for the Big12 title.

Dampier will probably have to learn to play real QB at least a little.
I don't disagree. He's more of a runner but if the passing improves from last year their offense should be significantly better than last year. I know he's been working on the passing game a lot since getting to SLC.

A little off topic, but I think the QB "uncertainty" for 7 of the top 10 favorites is fascinating. And I don't mean uncertain like they don't know who is going to be the starter, but more that we don't know how these guys are going to perform now that they are the guy at big time programs. I throw Arch in there, even though he's most likely going to be awesome, because we haven't seen him do it yet.

Speaking for Alabama, competent QB play alone likely means a playoff berth. Anything above average probably means one of the 3 or 4 best teams in the country. If Ty Simpson lives up to his 5 star pedigree and the DeBoer/Grubb duo does what they've done in the past, then I bet he ends up as a top 5 guy by the end of the season. But if it's Keelon Russell somehow, sky is the limit

Don’t sleep on Ty Simpson.
I think the reunion with De Boer and Grubb will really benefit the offense in general, but specifically the QB position. If Ty starts all season and Alabama is a playoff team, he will probably be in the general Heisman discussion. More like Stetson Bennett or JJ McCarthy than Jayden Daniels, but that's probably all we need

Liking Chiles at sparty as a little sleeper pick this year as well the more I dig up. He can't be any worse in the turnover department this year can he?

Had sex, have to xfer
Yup. He's staring at a 7 game suspension. She accused him of more than sex, btw. The charges were just dropped and they reached a settlement. Charges were civil, not criminal.

You know what you are signing up for when you go the BYU though.

I personally don't think he's that great but there are some decent teams where he'd probably be an upgrade at QB.

Not quite a sleeper as he’s making $8 million over 2 years….but Darrien Mensah of Duke will have the spotlight on him as he preps for a potential pro career. Has the tools, seems to have the smarts, does he have the drive that the best of best do?

I’m close friends with his sister so I’m a bit biased….awesome family. Hope it continues to go well for Mensah.

Great list of guys….thanks Hunt!

You think he is a big pro prospect? He came outta nowhere really.

Remains to be seen…. Checks most boxes physically with his size and tools. He certainly needs development, I followed him closely during his breakout season and a lot of things fell his way. As he came out of nowhere as you mention and took the starting job and beyond. Toward the end of the season he was coming up short on passes and wasn’t as dominating but Tulane was balancing a heavy run game with his pop shots and chain moving plays.

Duke coaching I can’t vouch for either way….but I would think they better be sharp to get him adjusted early.

Would LOVE to see this Julian “juju” Lewis kid take the reins and maximize his potential at Colorado. Dude zips it and I think he’s only 17. Looked tremendous in the spring game

Wow, only 17?

I didn't realize that.

He'll be 18 a few games into the season.

Luke Altlmyer is our guy we're rooting for ...Been buying up his Bowman U rookies and autos .

Schedule looks soft like Indiana's last season
Double, what do you think the line for Western Illinois Leathernecks will be vs Altlmyer & Co?
Indy clobbered W-ILL last year. Thinking it will be high.

I'm not buying this one at all.
Norman, Oklahoma says the same thing…Dude had multiple O coordinators, and had no OL or WR’s to help his cause. 5 star recruit, I wouldn’t count him out just yet. GREAT arm, dual threat and under coach Freeze will be a much needed improvement in my opinion. Just my 2 cents brotha…

Good points.

You could see the talent a bit in '23. He was thrown into his first full game for their Bowl game. That was a wild ride that night vs Zona. He had highlights and lowlights!

Last year's game log for reference during this debate.

Massey has 42.5, total 57.5

Last year Illinois was up 31-0 HT on Eastern Illinois and just cruised in the 2H for a 45-0 Final (486-196 ttl yard edge).

As you mention, Indiana was up 42-3 HT last year on Western and did not mail it in 2H for a 77-3 Final (701-121 ttl yard edge).

Western is breaking in several new players including their QB who might be a Dll guy seeing his first action at Dl or last year's little used back-up. Coach for Western Illinois might end up making them halfway decent in the league they are in now. Conference media days picked them 5th out of 9 teams. They had some of the best offensive numbers among league peers last year, but like I said the QB is gone and I don't think what they are working with now is as good as he was.

Auburn is a pretty fascinating team this year. I heard Cole Cubelic say something from SEC Media Days that would give me a little pause on Arnold. He said something to the effect that Freeze has told the defensive staff at AU to take it easy on Arnold so that he can build his confidence back. I guess I can spin it positive that he just needs a few things to go right to get his mojo back, but it also gives me concerns that he may be broken. Guess we'll see week 1, because I'm sure Aranda will have a good plan for him

Outside of Beamer in Scary, I’d say the “new” non elites of the SEC coaches have some heat on em this year with some tough schedules. Wonder if we see em prevail? I guess Lane is safe as long as he wants as well.

Isn’t Auburn fascinating every year?
Most schizophrenic program in the country. This season, I could see them going something 11-1 and making the CFP, or imploding and going 4-8. My guess is that they will most likely be in the 6 to 8 win range, and Hugh keeps his job as long as a couple of those wins are against the better teams in the SEC

Kirby and Sark are the only coaches I think are 100% safe honestly. Kiffin, Drink, and Lea probably are too. DeBoer has some leeway, but if he doesn't make the playoffs this year, next year could be uncomfortable. Same for Brian Kelly.

Lea would have to commit a violent crime to lose his job.

Yep. And they will fuck around and beat ya. LSU is long past due to drop one to Barn

In my humble opinion, Lane is tops for Ole Miss.
What would be the upgrade? He’s there as long as he wants, a firing would be for show only and a spark
