In the words of Roscoe P. Coltrane, what a horrendous crash. I was riding high at 3:30 pm before reality hit. Oh well. A few thoughts/lessons, because if I don't learn from Saturday is was relatively wasted time:
- Pretty pleased with the 8 wins, in that there wasn't much luck in them other than the Miami under hanging on in OT (but given that I subjected myself to watching the game, it never should've gone to OT, so feels like a proper result all told).
- The UNC/Duke over, Texas 1H, UCF TT and USA/LSU plays were all bad plays. As the old adage goes, it takes two to make an over. And while the Texas 1H wasn't an over, it required the underdog not to lay down and die and take the air out of the ball from the outset.
- After the 70-50 loss to JMU, UNC came out with a gameplan to keep the game low-scoring. The over never had a chance.
- Mississippi State and South Alabama both came out playing thank-you-for-the-check-we-just-want-to-get-out-of-town-without-being-decimated-by-injuries ball. - For USA, it's understable - it's OOC at a SEC team, and they are getting a check and have real conference title aspirations. Still, watching USA continue to try to establish the run in the 2H was hard on the eyes.
- For Cowbell, oof, I thought Lebby was Mr. "We'll live and die at our tempo" (hey, that mentality lasted all of a month until they lost at home to UF and had to go on the road with a freshman QB the following week).
- As for the UCF TT, that was the most surprising result of the day. That's the most physical and intense I've seen Colorado look under Deion (I mean, other than during warm-ups and the coin flip). UCF was off a bye and Colorado was off the hail mary win vs Baylor - no excuse for UCF to be that flat. I believed in Gus Malzahn and I paid for it. Shame on me, I know better. And, I have to admit, I'm way too eager for a Colorado fade and probably don't rate them properly.
- The OSU/MSU over and OSU TT over losses were a bit unfortunate. Yes, it takes two to make an over, but Sparty got SOD at the OSU 20, had a fumble on the OSU 11 on a nice play by TE Veiling, another fumble at the OSU 16 - all in the 1H when they'd likely have taken points in any situation. They get even 2 FGs on those 3 possessions and game goes over. And if Sparty has 10+, I'd imagine CRD would've hung another TD and I've have cashed my Bucks TT, but at 38-7 in the 2H he took his foot off the gas (and the Devin Brown and Julian Sayin drives were about as unsightly as USA establishing the run at LSU in the 2H). So, not bothered by those two losses, would play em again.
- I don't hate the Illinois TT over. They were 1st-and-goal at the Penn State 2 late 1H and turned it into zero points after a fumbles snap, PSU defensive stand and missed FG. That said, the PSU defense came out for real in the 2H. Very pleased with Illini 1H call, one of my better angles of the day along with WKU and Navy.
- Okie St/K State under wasn't a bad play. The worst part about it is it forced me to watch Okie State's offense way more than I otherwise would've.
All things considered, this is what happens when you make 18 plays on the week and 17 on Saturday. You'd think I'd have learned by now. Maybe next week.
