So Winnipeg had a kicker named Troy Westwood and he made a comment that he hated playing in Sask because they are a bunch of banjo picking inbreds. Of course the media are rushing to condemn hom, holding panels on the evening news to decide if he should be cut and whatnot. So he calls a press conference and of course everyone thinks hes going to apologize and instead he says something like "I know I said that the people of Saskatchewan are banjo picking inbreds. But I now know that very few of them play the banjo."

It was basically a media troll before the word troll existed. So thats how it came to be known as tha banjo bowl
