Dallas has also been playing like shit lately, I think the Ducks can take them in 5 or 6.

But once again that depends on how Turco plays, last year I think he played real well but Loungo played abit better and Dallas couldn't give Turco any help.

I feel sorry for him as he's a stud in the regular season and ALSO plays really well in the playoffs just can never get any support.

Its a shame Calgary and San Jose are playing each other. They're the 2 best teams in the west IMO, Calgary should be an underdog and I will take them I think.

And Montreal of course, I think they may go to the finals. After the Ducks won, a lot of teams built themselves like the Ducks, not Montreal though, theyre the Anti-Ducks... Hopefully someone will knock off the Rangers.

gonna be interesting playoffs, probably going for some upsets in the 1st round, depending on the prices.

GL everyone

Montreal in 5
NY Rangers in 5
Ottawa in 6
Washington in 7

Anaheim in 6
Calgary in 7
Detroit in 5
Colorado in 7

based upon the reg season 1-goal game results stats

Minnesota over Colorado
San Jose over Calgary
Detroit over Nashville
Anaheim over Dallas

New Jersey over NY Rangers
Washington over Philadelphia
Ottawa over Pittsburgh
Boston over Montreal

Obviously these 1-goal stat indicators go against the 2 strongest season hth results (NYR over NJY, and MON over BOS)

BC, will you be making your actual plays based on 1-goal game stats? That thread is very impressive as most of your analysis per usual, just wondering if you are going to make bets based solely on that, or add other parameters to the pot?

Needless to say, that thread was eye opening for me, and it was early morning. :D I'm not a morning person at all :D.

:shake:

Satyr - those figures generally begin to make an impact starting with the 2nd round, my memory serving me correctly. If you go back and look at all the tables from recent seasons, there are numerous examples of teams with poor figures overcoming teams with much better ones (and the perfect example is last season w/Ottawa, who went through 3 straight rounds beating teams with superior figures to their own before finally running into a team whose figures they couldnt overcome/Anaheim). I'd think that in part simply has to do with how teams match-up against an individual opponent - if you have the wood on a team (like MON does over BOS, or NYR has over NJY), then the fact you may have stunk where your opponent shone re:1-goal stats really doesnt mean a helluva lot for one series. These figures really have a long term impact, where the cream really does rise to the top eventually, which is to say the cream that survives the early going, which relates back to the impact these stats have the deeper into the playoffs we get. So even given what I just posted above, I dont see it as any advocation to make a ballsy play, say, on Boston to knock over Montreal, however I would say Jersey isn't going to be as easily dealt with in the post season by NYR as they deat with them in the reg season - Jersey obviously has real strong numbers out of every Eastern team, esp. compared to NYR.

Colorado has shown the knack of getting down early...Very poor 1st period play generally all year but more so down the stretch.

I'd imagine Colorado goes where their home results go - they can't afford to drop a home game one would think (if they're going to win the series)

Important stat and not meant to be racist in any way...Amount of canadian players on the teams.

Ottawa 17
Pittsburgh 12
Montreal 11
Washington 11
Boston 15
New Jersey 10
New York 9
Philadelphia 16

Anaheim 16
Detroit 10
San Jose 12
Calgary 15
Minnesota 15
Dallas 12
Nashville 17
Colorado 14

5 on 5 goal differential (my stats so there may be a mistake here and there tracking these all year long, so these numbers should be taken as an approximation but should be accurate enough)

Detroit +53
Anaheim +23
San Jose +7
Dallas +18
Colorado +20
Calgary +17
Minnesota +1
Nashville +5

Boston -1
Montreal +13
Washington +18
Philadelphia -11
Ottawa +16
Pittsburgh +28
New York +15
New Jersey +12

Montreal has the most rookies in the east, Dallas in the west.
Detroit has the most players aged 30 yrs or older, Philly in the east.
NJ has the oldest age avg in the east, Pittsburgh has the youngest.
Detroit easily has the oldest age avg in the west, San Jose has the youngest.

Colorado over Minnesota
San Jose over Calgary
Detroit over Nashville
Anaheim over Dallas

New Jersey over NY Rangers
Philadelphia over Washington
Pittsburgh over Ottawa
Montreal over Boston

Detroit is going to screw up yet again

Oh by the way San Jose is the 2nd seed not 7th.

Ottawa/Pitts game i think comes down to Goal Tending.

Will Dallas choke...yet again? I feel so bad for this team. I assume Under 2.5 goals for each game? lol

Playoff Prices from Olympic:

Montreal -400
Boston +320

Pittsburgh -320
Ottawa +260

Washington -150
Philly +125

New York -120
New Jersey -105

Detroit -500
Nashville +400

San Jose -380
Calgary +320

Minnesota -135
Colorado +110

Ducks -240
Stars +200

not sure Detroit deserves a -500. I think +400 is good value for the series as Nashville has played Detroit hard.

Obviously Detroit leads the series 5-3, but not dominant.

I see good value with Ottawa too, but Pittsburgh is pretty hot.

Its pretty hard to bet on Montreal at those odds. Im thinking Colorado, Calgary and Ottawa. Ottawa had everything to lose near the end, now they have nothing to lose, they'll play better Im sure.

yeah, I see Montreal just about where they should be. No value for Montreal. Probably value with the Capitals eventhough the series was 2-2, but they are smoking HOT right now.

Not taking anything away from the caps but I dont know why Philly is an underdog, Philly has more points and faced a lot tougher opposition than Washington.

Important stat and not meant to be racist in any way...Amount of canadian players on the teams.

Ottawa 17
Pittsburgh 12
Montreal 11
Washington 11
Boston 15
New Jersey 10
New York 9
Philadelphia 16

Anaheim 16
Detroit 10
San Jose 12
Calgary 15
Minnesota 15
Dallas 12
Nashville 17
Colorado 14

There's also a Russian jinx factor worth noting....there has never been a team with two Russians in their top five in scoring that has made it to the Stanley Cup Finals. The Pens have two, the Habs have two, the Caps have three. Hmmm Rangers future play?

Ya they fixed it, now some juice on the Sharks.

As a Pens fan, remembering the nightmare that was their series with Ottawa last year I really would have preferred to play Boston in this round. That said, you have to exorcise those demons at some point so it might as well be now.

No possible way I'd lay -3-anything here, though. I might even take that +260 were it not bad luck for me to bet against one of my teams.

That value on Calgary is interesting, I might also look at Minny and NY--though, based on the stats above, Jersey might be smarter and, since I hate the Rangers, I'm just fine with that.

I will likely follow the visitor system for the first two rounds again.

I forget if that's your system, Santa, or Bet's, my apologies.

Sweet! I can start watching Hockey again (the regular season's pretty much meaningless in my eyes...)

The Flyers got a chance??

in the first round, yes... Caps kind of backdoored in to the # 3. Gratned they are playing very well.

But alot of first time playoff appearances, including the Caps HC so it might be an adjustment IMO Flyers in 6

I will probably make series plays on Philly, Minny and Dallas

I agree with you on minny.

With how hot the Caps are playing I'm not sure I can bet against them right now, but it all does depend on how they can change their game to the playoff style.

Huet is the key for the caps, hes been known to flinch under pressure although hes had pressure so far and done well, pressure in Montreal I guess is a different kind of pressure...I played Colorado, Calgary and Rangers and Ottawa.

What was that system again? I vaguely remember it from last year.

Lippsman wrote on Blankets:
Well it's that time of the year again. For all you vets out there you already know what my picks will be, but for the new guys on board here's how it's done.

Take the dogs for the first game if they are +130 or more .If they win the first game I won't wager on the second game. If they lose then take them for the second game. Then that's all she wrote. Don't chase the 2nd game. DO NOT CHASE

Works like clockwork almost every year. Looking to make some series wagers also.

If you have any questions just ask.

Not taking anything away from the caps but I dont know why Philly is an underdog, Philly has more points and faced a lot tougher opposition than Washington.

That series opened -110/-110 before the odds found their way to what they appear as in this thread.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The overwhelming problem for the Capitals IMO is this - they've been winning so regularly for so long, that it's simply not realistically feasible for them to avoid a slump in form at some point in the playoffs. And, obviously, any slump taking place in a playoff situation will be nothing short of terminally destructive.

Teams with the longest run of games without having suffered 2 straight regulation losses headed into the playoffs...

62 games - Washington
24 games - Philadelphia
20 games - Montreal
17 games - Pittsburgh
13 games - Anaheim

If any of these teams make the Stanley Cup finals, you'd imagine they'll have played between 17-19 games to get there (and to have not suffered 2 straight losses in any particular series, since such a feat is usually terminal to one's series hopes).
That would mean, for Washington, possibly going 81 games without suiffering conseuctive losses in regulation - thats simply ridiculous to contemplate. Even for the lowest team on this list, Anaheim, that would mean 30-32 games without consecutive reg. losses (with over half those being playoff games) - that number is pushing the bounds of reason, let alone 79/81.

So, on a *slump-of-form-basis*, you'd have to think it hard for any of the above 5 teams to go right through and win the Stanley Cup w/out suffering 2 straight reg. losses (at least once), which would obviously seriously endanger their hopes of winning the particular series that feat took place in.

I really think the Caps can win this first series, Philly came out on fire at the start of the season then just were on a steady decline the whole way throughout he rest of the season.

Caps are sitting at -160 right now though, soo hmm..
