Problem of glory hunting in modern sports at it's finest.
We see it with Chelsea and Real Madrid in football (or soccer as you call it) and now with the Yanks. With difference being, Chelsea are an artificially created (big) club, they had their history (which Chelsea fans should be proud of) before Abramovich came and injected 400 million into the club. That's what I call glory hunting.
However, I wouldn't make a parallel between Chelsea and the Yanks, rather the Bombers with Real Madrid and their Los Galacticos era.
Both clubs with HUGE history, impeccable tradition, etc...
And they made HUGE mistakes of piling up outdated star players, who have reached their prime years ago, and players who cannot form a TEAM, but rather a bunch of big names.
You cannot win championships that way.
Yanks' GM has made a shitty job with team selection and compiling the roster, and they're paying the price now. This is far from coincidence, their record and performances. They're missing the core element, instead they have to rely on glimpses by Jeter, A Rod and others (occasionally). I'd rather have Willits (who was anonymous a year ago) and Kotchman than Giambi right now.
Team chemistry, versatility and perseverance are essential parameters for a team to reach the top.
Yankees don't have that. A Rod's partying with strippers (however I don't look at that as a problem, it's the American sportsman's life, something that would NEVER pass in Europe, but I don't give a shit really, I say if you're doing your job on the field/court/ice you should be free to do whatever you want in privacy of your free time), Giambi's battling the press for his steroid use, Clemens is looked at like a savior while in reality he might spark the offense a bit at times but the Yankees "machine" is broken, you can't polish an old engine and expect it to work.
1)Sack Torre, hire a new coach.
2)Sack GM, hire new one
3)start rebuilding this team for next season.
