Chicago White Sox vs. New York Yankees
Friday, May 20, 2022 at 7:05 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium in Bronx, New York

Who Is Starting for the White Sox?

The White Sox start Dallas Keuchel tonight.

After his poor Spring Training, it was easy to be down on Keuchel heading into this season.

If your negative expectations for him haven't changed, you should at least inject some flexibility into how you approach Keuchel.

Currently, his form merits optimism. In his past two starts, he has allowed a combined total of two earned runs.

Moreover, he has allowed two earned runs or fewer in three of his last four starts -- these starts came against the Red Sox, Yankees, and Royals.

Especially given his current form, his season is a better one than his ERA suggests.

Keuchel's ERA is as high as it is primarily because he allowed seven earned runs in one inning of work in Cleveland.

Because the season is still young, the fact that Keuchel yielded a 63.00 ERA in a single game still exercises a significant impact on his ERA.

Keuchel vs. Yankee Batters

Keuchel might seem to be in a bad spot today because he's facing the same lineup twice.

But history does not vindicate such a thought.

For example, the last occasion on which he faced the same team in consecutive outings was toward the end of last year when he allowed two earned runs in five innings in consecutive starts against Detroit.

History, actually, indicates that Keuchel is in a great spot tonight.

In six career starts at Yankee Stadium, Keuchel boasts a 2.43 ERA.

Who Will Start for the Yankees Tonight?

New York starts Nestor Cortes tonight.

Cortes is enjoying by far the best season of his five-year professional career.

His FIP (like ERA, but factors out fielding) is 2.44 and has never been better.

Moreover, he is striking out more batters while allowing fewer home runs than he ever has before.

So far this season, he has allowed six earned runs in seven starts.

Cortes vs. White Sox Batters

Cortes is a lefty and the common thought is to back White Sox batters against lefties.

But this thought can't be adhered to blindly because there are exceptions.

In view of the pitches that Cortes throws, Chicago does not match up particularly well with him.

But the most damning piece of news for White Sox batters tonight is that Cortes has built a strong track record against them.

In 19 career innings against the White Sox, Cortes owns a 1.89 ERA.

San Diego Padres vs. San Francisco Giants
Friday, May 20, 2022 at 10:15 p.m. ET at Oracle Park in San Francisco

Who Is Pitching for the Padres?

San Diego starts Sean Manaea tonight.

Manaea has earned a 3.10 FIP or lower in each of his last three starts.

Overall, he is a consistent performer who reliably lasts deep into outings.

His control is strong in the sense that he avoids walking batters.

It is also easier for him to avoid walks because he ably induces batters to swing at his pitches when they land outside of the strike zone.

Manaea vs Giant Batters

I like Manaea tonight because he owns a 2.74 career ERA in four starts in San Francisco's ballpark.

Expect little from Brandon Belt, for example, is who is 2-for-13 in his career against Manaea.

Who Is Starting for San Francisco?

The Giants counter with Jakob Junis who has yet to allow over two earned runs in a start this season.

His control has been excellent as evident in his low walk rate. He's also keeping the ball on the ground and avoiding long balls.

Junis primarily throws a slider and a sinker. These two pitches make up about 85 percent of his arsenal.

He promises to thrive tonight because San Diego ranks 24thin slugging against these pitches from righties.
