Welcome to the wildest coaching carousel we've seen ...

He was supposed to step away last year and Scalley be HC this year. After their turd season he said he wanted to coach another year. Utah almost lost Scalley.

Scalley was going to go with Sitake to PSU as DC if he took the job. Scalley was not going to be DC another year at Utah and I'm fairly certain Whit was told it was time.

BYU's entire staff are former Utah coaches, Whit's not the easiest guy in the world to work for. He stubborn to a fault and has caused many an OC to walk over the years.

Thanks. Great insights.

Not true. Last year when he didn't step down as he said that he would.
the relationship between Harlan and Whitt has been mutually beneficial.

given that Whitt is known for being tricky to work with (what great Leader is not?) i can see how friction may have built over the past 7-8 years.

but both guys are classy and we will never know.

i am just telling you what the word is that i have heard, but i know you have your ear to the ground closely in terms of the program so i am not discounting or disputing what you are saying.

Yeah, they never had any public issues until the end of last season. Harlan is somewhat of a tool imho but again, Whit caused this entire issue when he started giving timelines. He should have never said a word about when he wanted to hang it up.

I think Whit and his stupidity cost Utah the BYU game this year. It happens at least once every year. I've wanted him gone ever since he nearly made Cam Rising a cripple. He has risked the well being of a players health multiple times over the years.

I still think he's a good coach and I think he's a good short term fit for UM. I also think he owes it to the University of Utah and Scalley not to fuck them on his way out the door.

I’m 1000% stunned. Like jaw drop to the floor stunned.

I’ve talked w Utes about this, but Whitt has absolutely lost his fastball the last 3-4 years. He’s an outstanding coach, but boy….the fit here is a major, major, major issue.

Whitt has been in the State of Utah his whole life, DC for 2 prior head coaches before having this near 2 decade run as HC. Going from being involved with Utah schools for 35 years to trying to win the B1G, with real pressure and real expectations…man, I don’t know at all.

He’s 66, never recruited the Midwest and the level of competition for recruiting, he’s never been in a conference that sniffs Big Ten upper level play. Man…I’m calling my shot now and questioning how the hell this is the right fit for UM.

The donors better be ready to open the wallets BIGLY to get him top 5 level talent…and then still, he’s lost his fastball IMO a lot the last 3-4 years.

I’ll never say a bad word about him. Legit an awesome guy and my interaction with him was always super considerate. I hope I’m dead wrong and it works for all parties.

He is a great great coach, no arguing that…but man…this one is a stunner

I don’t see how he doesn’t have a top 3 defense every year in UM beginning in year 1. He did a lot with less talent in Utah. Guessing what you said will not be an issue with NIL.

I've never liked him a ton, thought he was too conservative. He's had what I call "G5 Success" vs. P4 though Utah is now in P4 B12. And he never seemed to want to leave Utah for a bigger job so I just question whether he can now succeed at a very high pressure job. I guess we shall see.

i forgot Utah was P12 so I guess my analogy doesn't hold. But what I'm trying to say is that he seemed to never want a bigger job until now.

Those defenses aren't all because of him. Gary Anderson, Morgan Scalley, Sitake and John Pease were big parts of their defensive success through the years.

he will make sure he has a strong staff working for him. he has tons of connections. many dudes even some from the NFL right now would jump at the opportunity to be an AHC, OC, DC, at a school like Michigan.

for the first time in his career, he has national brand recognition as he walks into living rooms of recruits.

But he's still stubborn and as Scarf has so eloquently said..... he's lost his fastball. Don't expect Urban to Florida results from Whit here.

Not the case. My mistake. Thamel is saying he won't coach Utah in the bowl but will be in Orlando to meet players, etc. but not coach UM there.
Utah is better off with him not in Vegas. Would have been a bigger distraction than they'll already have. I think the players will rally.

5 year deal with michigan Kyle Whittingham
Maybe he's more than just a 2y bridge candidate but if they had only given him 2y on the contract it would have been used against UM in recruiting so I guess they had no choice but give the 5y. If he finishes the contract he'll be 71yo at the end of it.

I will get some thoughts in here sometime over the weekend.

Caught some sort of flu around 25 hours ago and I can barely stand. Brutal. I'd imagine I've lost 6-7 pounds in a day.

I will say, hearing the #s that will be allotted yearly to coaching staff + NIL I totally understand why KW would want to give this a try.

The money guys are very on board with him and that helps immensely.

Sorry to hear about the flu. If Whit doesn't damage Utah out the door I'll be a fan, if he screws them i hope that he is a huge disappointment..... nothing personal. 😉

Feel better. Bro.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this hire.

For @B.A.R. and anyone else that wants to watch. Very good analysis from some former players and a coach that are in the know with regards to the Utah program. They were very careful with their wording though. Sounds like it was time for a change in Utah(which I've been clamoring for since the second Rose Bowl loss.

He will be a stabilizing force for Michigan but all you are getting is a football guy. You'll need others to do the things that he's not willing to do.
