Goodbye to Romance College Football
AAC

Cincinnati scored TD on their opening drive of the game, their opening drive of the 2nd H, and the final play of the game as they got a pick-six in OT for the 26-20 win. UC was SOD at the S30, S15 and S36 and also fumbled at the C08, threw INTs at the S12 and S41. SMU got an 8y TD “drive” after the fumble. Ponies also had long drives for TD and FG in the 2nd H. SMU took a brief 20-17 lead with 4min left in the game, after a couple punts, UC took over with 1:21 left and kicked the tying 41y FG with :00 left to force OT. UC INT’d a shallow crossing pass and ret’d it 86y for the win in OT. UC 25-13 FD and 477-351 TY (5.4-5.2) edges. UC -2 TO margin and had two empty RZ possessions.

Houston jumped out 14-0, then had back-to-back 3-and-outs. USF scored then got a short field TD off an INT to tie 14-14. Teams traded TDs, UH went up 28-21 to lead at HT. UH had a 364-242 1st H yard edge. Some strange things happened in the 3rd…UH had a busted pass route and throwing from their own EZ refs ruled intentional grounding for safety (King wasn't throwing it away to avoid pressure). Applewhite got an unsportsmanlike penalty and after the free kick, USF was set up at the H27, but could only managed a 23y FG…28-26. UH went up 35-26 on a 4th down King run (highlight reel style) and USF had to settle for another short FG from the H08…35-29. Teams traded TDs to end the 3rd…43-36. UH scored twice in the 4th qrt as USF threw INT and fumbled. UH ended the game at the SF15. UH 35-29 FD, 682-467 TY (7.7-5.8), 263-204 (5.4-4.9) RY edges for UH. Each team lost 2 TOs. King 28-40-419-5-2, 132y rushing w/ 2TDs – 7 TDs! The most impressive play was the 4th-and-7 run where King repeatedly avoided tackles and ran 36y for TD, funny facing USF reminded me of something I’d seen Quinten Flowers do for the Bulls, now they are victimized by such a play. Barnett 26-39-263-1-1. Key USF WR Tyre McCants injured early and did not return.

Tulsa led 10-7 HT. Each team was SOD deep in opponent terr, Tulane fumbled at own 32 (led to no pts) and Tulsa missed a FG. Tulsa extended the lead to 17-7 early 3rd qrt. Tulane responded with a TD…17-14, then kicked a 20y FG to tie early 4th. Teams exchanged SOD, Tulane got a 39y McMillian TD run with 3:46 left to lead 24-17. Tulsa’s final gasp gained 12y on 4th-and-18 near midfield. Tulane had 404-315 TY edge (5.5-5.2). McMillian got first career start 10-19-92-0-0, 75y rushing w/ 2 TDs. Banks DNP. Boomer 12-26-180-1-0, 33y net rushing. Tulsa has lost 12 straight FBS games.

Tulane also had something like a 38-22 TOP edge. Something to monitor as they play some of these tempo/volume teams down the stretch.

ACC

First time since 1991 VT has allowed three teams to score 40+ pts.

Boston College scored on their first 3 possessions of the game and led 17-7 before Miami made it 17-14 before HT. UM threw INTs on back-to-back poss in the 3rd which BC converted into 10 pts off just 23y of offense and led 27-14. UM was SOD at the B03 and also SOD at their own 46 and 31. BC threw INT and missed a FG. BC had 433-305 (5.2-4.1) TY edge. BC D 3 sacks. A Brown 15-28-152-1-1, 41y rushing w/ TD. Dillon 32att-149-TD. Virginia won their 3rd straight ACC game for the first time since 2011. UVA led 17-14 HT with each team scoring all TDs off 75+y drives. UNC would gain just 38y on their first 5 2nd H poss, UVA extended it to 31-14 until UNC scored with 8min left but Heels could get no closer 31-21 F. UVA had 23-14 FD and 425-337 TY (6.0-5.6) edge including a 208-66 RY edge (4.7-3.0). UVA was SOD at N16 in the 3rd qrt. Each team lost one TO (UVA got a short field TD of Heels fumble). Perkins 18-27-217-3-1, leading rusher 21att-112-TD. Elliot 22-38-271-2-0.

Clemson handed Florida St their worst home loss and scored the most pts allowed by the Noles at the Doak. Tigers have won 4 straight in the series for first time since 1970. Clemson did punt 3x to open gaining just 31y, but FSU could do nothing and eventually Clemson got on track 8p 69y, 9p 58y, 4p 30y after INT and 6p 73y to lead 28-0 HT. Clemson’s first TD was set up after CU missed a FG, but FSU roughed the K. 59-10 F as CU racked up a 25-14 FD and 524-247 TY edge (6.8-3.3) including 120-(-21) RY edge (3.6-(-.6)). Clemson D 5 sacks. FSU was called for 16 penalties - 134y! Lawrence 20-37-314-4-0. Etienne/Choice combined 13att-65y Rodgers 6rec-156-2TD. Louisville opened with a 7-0 lead, but Wake Forest scored 3 straight TDs on long drives. It was 21-14 WF when Colburn ripped a 74y TD run then LV fumbled the ensuing KO and WF got a 23y scoop-and-score TD to lead 35-14. 35-21 HT with WF having just a 331-310 1st H yard edge. LV couldn’t keep up in the 2nd H with WF leading by as much as 56-28. 56-35 F. Nobody scored in the 4th qrt. WF had a 591-532 TY edge (8.2-5.9). Petrino withdrew a scholarship to Matt Colburn years ago and he ran 20att-243-3TD. WF Amari Henderson had 4 pbu.

Pitt rushed for their second most yards in school history, 484. Pitt took 7-0 lead, but Duke would lead for the rest of the game until Pitt got a 25y TD pass with :05 left to break a 45-45 tie. Duke didn’t punt until the 4th qrt. They were SOD at P24 and fumbled at the P15 right before HT keeping pts off the board for a 21-17 HT Devils lead. After not being able to force Duke punt all game, the two 4th qrt stops proved critical allowing Pitt to tie then take the lead. FDs even, Pitt had 634-619 TY (8.9-8.0) edge. Pickett 8-18-150-2-0, 76y rushing w/ TD. Ollison 18att-149-TD, Carter 7att-137-2TD. – Jones 27-42-396-4-0, 38y net rushing. Deon Jackson Duke record 403 all purpose yards.

Syracuse jumped out 24-7 with North Carolina St going 3-and-out on 4 of their first 5 possessions. Teams traded TDs until Cuse settled for a FG…44-34 9min left. NCSt quickly cut it to 44-41 and forced a punt, but NCSt threw INT with 2min left at own 23. NCSt had all 3 timeouts, a D PI gave Cuse a 1st down on 3rd then Cuse got a 5y TD run on 3rd down…51-41 F. Cuse had 30-21 FD, 561-541 TY (7.1-7.4) edges. NCSt D got 5 sacks (2.5 by Pratt). West Virginia scored TD, missed two FGs, kicked two FGs from the B08 and B30 to lead just 13-0 early 2nd qrt despite completely dominating vs Baylor. WVU made up for it with 25 and 65 yard TD passes to David Sills plus 33 and 79y runs to lead 41-0 HT. Baylor fumbled the opening KO of the 2nd H and WVU would lead 44-0 before BU got on the board. 58-14 F. 568-287 TY (8.9-4.4) edge for WVU. WVU +4 TOs. WVU was just 1 of 10 3rd down. Grier 17-27-353-3-0. Brewer 1-8-22-0-3. McClendon 16-21-183-0-0. WVU D had 5 sacks and 12 TFL.

Texas Tech got their first blk’d punt TD since 2005 to open the scoring and would lead 10-0 after ISU missed a FG. ISU got the O going and took a 14-10 lead before TT retook the lead 12p 85y right before HT…17-14. 25y in TT penalties helped ISU kick a 27y FG…17-17. ISU D got a 41y pick-six…24-17. Teams traded TDs…31-24. TT downed a punt at the I04 and Purdy was sacked/fumbled in the EZ for a TT TD and tie game 31-31 early 4th. TT threw their second INT, but the next 3 poss were punts. TT was at their own 15 and Bowman was under pressure, retreated and threw the ball away from his own EZ and called for intentional grounding leading to a safety and 33-31 ISU lead 4:39 left. Montgomery got a 25y run then a deep throw for 48y TD pass on 3rd-and-9 gave ISU the 40-31 lead 2:25 left. TT’s third INT occurred in ISU territory to end the game as Clones killed the final 1:40 ending the game at the T09. FDs even, but ISU had 422-363 TY edge (5.4-4.5), including 172-30 RY (3.4-1.3). TCU outgained Kansas 504-307 (7.0-4.6) and out FD’d them 27-17, but were -2 TOs and just 3-of-5 in the RZ. After KU went up 7-0, TCU was SOD at the K01. KU converts 3rd down twice including a 3rd-and-11 Bender 12y run, then Williams caught a pass and extended the ball over the goal line and TCU forces a fumble..but replay upheld the TD call that the ball had crossed the line first, barely..Rockchalk 27-24 6min left. TCU is moving down the field and has 1st-and-goal at K09 with under 1-1/2min left. RB Anderson runs into his lineman and fumbles (butt fumble) and KU recovers. TCU has all 3 timeouts left and force a 4th and long with :07 left. KU decides to have Bender throw the ball backwards out of the EZ for a safety assuming it would burn all the time, but the ball hit a canopy on the sideline instead of the ground preserving :01 left. KU has to KO and by accident kind of squibs the kick and TCU could’ve potentially had a free play from the K33 – Patterson says everyone was instructed to fall on the ball and not run with it to try and get one play off, but a TCU player picked up the ball and tried running with it, tackled and time expires. Bender 19-29-249-2-0. Herbert 21att-38-TD, P Williams 11att-33, 7rec-102-2TD - Collins 23-33-351-1-1. Anderson 20att-95.

The two empty drives plus WKU kicking a FG from the FI06 contributed to the close yardage then WKU gained 139 of their yards on the final 3 possessions.

UConn and UMass scored on their opening possessions, but there would be no more scores the rest of the 1st H, UC led 7-3. UM missed a FG before HT and was SOD at the C44 and muffed a punt at their own 24 (led to no pts). UC however was SOD at the M23 and M15. UC took a 14-3 lead early 3rd qrt. Isabella caught a 38y TD (xpt no good). UM threw an INT, but UC could only get a 41y FG out of it and led 17-9 early 4th. UM then got a 67y TD pass…17-15 (2pt no good), UC went 3-and-out and UM would go 11p 81y eating up nearly 7min to take a 22-17 lead with 5min left. First play of the next series, UC’s 6th pass of the game was INT’d and UM killed the clock. UM 444-265 TY edge (6.5-5.3). Comis 8-15-197-2-1, 63y rushing. Pindell 4-6-15-0-1, 120y rushing w/ TD.

Eastern Michigan D did all they could with absolutely no support from the O. EM O did not gain a single FD in the 1st H vs Army. Yet the D limited Army to 3 short FGs at the ends of 19p 64y, 12p 74y and 8p 48y drives until Army finally got a TD on a 5p 62y drive to lead 16-0 HT. Tables turned in the 2nd H as Army went 3-and-out twice and EM hit a switch going 6p 46y and 3p 58y to trail 14-16 (went for 2pt twice got one, failed one). Army went for 4th-and-1 next drive and continued 10p 75y for 23-14 lead. The comeback attempt ran out of gas when EM fumbled near midfield and Army got a TD on 4th down to make it 30-14 early 4th. The final would be 37-22. Army had 27-10 FD and 415-235 TY edge (5.1-5.9) with 46-14 TOP. Army did pass for 7-8-126-2-0 with Hopkins back from injury. EM was limited to just 34 RY (3.1). Army was 53% 3rd down and 4-of-4 4th down. EM combined 2-of-9 3rd/4th down.

ND fumbled on their first play at own 36, but Navy was SOD. ND then scored TDs on 4 of their next 5 1st H poss to lead 27-0 with a 318-62y edge. Perry got a 58y run to open the 3rd and Navy would score 3 plays later. After a 30y ND FG, Navy got a couple chunk plays on their way to another TD…30-14. ND made it 37-14, Navy punted, ND threw INT. Navy busted a 33y TD run to make it 37-22 (2pt good). ND got another TD mid 4th qrt….44-22 Navy fumbled at ND30 and threw INT at ND02 on their final two poss. ND had 28-14 FD and 584-344 TY (7.7-5.7) edges. Each team lost 2 TOs. Navy was just 4-12-52-0-1 passing. Book 27-33-330-2-1, 50y rushing.

MAC

Ball St got up 7-0 then it was lights out as Ohio rolled 31-7 HT with 312-148y edge after 2 qrts and 52-14 F. Ohio actually missed a FG and was SOD at the B25 or it could’ve potentially been worse. OU had 30-11 FD, 554-242 TY (7.0-4.4) with a 411-80 RY edge (7.2-3.5). OU was +2 TO margin; led to two short field TDs, OU’s lone TO led to a BSU short field TD. 55-23% 3rd down. Rourke 11-19-127-1-1, 77y rushing w/ 2 TD. Ouellette and Irons both over 100y with 2 TDs each. Riley Neal injured in 2nd qrt.

Western Michigan had a 6 game winning streak snapped home vs Toledo. WM QB Wassink was injured 1st qrt and FR QB Eleby made first career appearance (completed first 8 attempts of game) and finished 23-38-293-2-0. Tol led 23-17 HT with WM having a 278-274 yard edge. Tol blew the game open in the 3rd qrt with 3 straight TDs, some aided with good starting field position. WM could only manage one 2nd H TD and punted from their own side of the field on 3 of their final 4 drives. 51-24 F. Tol had 25-17 FD and 515-432 TY (7.7-6.5) edges with 268-125 RY (7.7-3.7). Both teams struggled on 3rd down. Tol D got 5 sacks. Rocket QBs Guadagni and Peters QBs combined for 18-32-247-5-0 with many easy throws to wide open receivers – Guadagni was injured, Peters finished.

Akron led 17-0 and were dominating Central Michigan, CM ran just 4 plays in Akron territory in the 1st H due to an Akron fumble then punted. The 2nd H was a different story. Akron had a 1st down near midfield, but QB Nelson had the ball knocked out, bouncing backwards setting up CM at the A11 and 4p later CM had a 28y FG…17-3. Akron fumbled the ensuing KO although they recovered and were backed up by penalty, Zips punted and CM began their drive at the CM42, 9p 58y later CM cut it to 17-10. Akron then fumbled again giving CM the ball at the A43, but CM missed a 23y FG. Akron got a 56y pass, but missed a 43y FG near end of 3rd. CM had 4th-and-1 but was SOD at the A06 with 3:27 left. CM had one more chance, but nearly threw two INTs and couldn’t threaten to score from midfield. CM had 18-16 FD while Akron had slim 303-300 TY edge (4.7-3.4). CM scored just 10pts on 4 RZ trips, Akron scored 14 on 3 RZ trips. Punting was key for Akron as well with K/P Gasser nailing four 50+y punts and downing 3 inside the 20. Akron -3 TO margin. Some of the worst 3rd down conversion rate you will see, teams combined for 7 of 34. Akron D did have 5 sacks (CM 2). Nelson 10-27-149-1-0, 23y net rushing. Akron’s John Lako had 23 tkls incl 2TFL. – Poljan 19-37-169-0-0, 28y net rushing w/ TD.

Northern Illinois finally bagged a win vs their ultra tough non-conference schedule winning 7-6 at BYU. BYU held 17-11 FD advantage and outgained NIU by nearly 100y 301-204 (4.5-3.6). BYU kicked a 35y FG then were SOD at the N32, NIU missed a FG and Cougars led 3-0 HT. NIU came out and went 10p 65y and got a D holding call on 3rd down from the B03 and they scored the next play to lead 7-3 under 4min elapsed in the 2nd H. NIU would not run a single play in BYU territory the rest of the game until their game sealing INT was caught at the B48 and they took knees. BYU settled for a FG from the N05, missed a FG then threw the game ending INT on a bad read by Wilson who misjudged the depth of the safety. Childers 10-21-115-0-0, 19y net rushing w/ TD. Wilson 18-30-208-0-1 (sacked 5x).

Happy times return to Laramie as Wyoming wins the border war and retains the bronze boot. It was just 3-0 HT with CSU playing some surprising good D. CSU’s O however couldn’t advance beyond the W35 (missed FG). WYO rushed 7x then passed for a 14y TD to RB Evans and led 10-0 to open the 3rd (drive kept alive by personal foul on what would’ve been 4th down). CSU QB Hill was sacked/fumbled at the C25 leading to a short WYO TD 17-0. CSU threw INT and Evans ripped a 48y TD run to lead 24-0 late 3rd. CSU finally found something and went 11p 78y…24-7. WYO kicked a FG and CSU converted 3rd down twice going 7p 74y and made it 27-14 early 4th. They could not stop WYO however who got a 43y TD pass next poss 34-14. They called D PI to keep a CSU drive alive and Rams made it 34-21 4min left, WYO recovered onside kick. WYO ended the game at the C18 after an INT. WYO RB Nico Evans 28att-176-TD. CSU WR Preston Williams 10rec-126. Both teams had new starting QBs, TrFr Chambers for WYO 7-10-116-2-0, 22att-101-TD rushing. Collin Hill for CSU (prior starting exp) 34-54-333-0-2. WYO K Rothe remains perfect on the year adding two more (14-14, 17 straight dating back to last year).

Utah St is in their longest winning streak since 1965. USU has scored 60+ pts 3x which is a single season record. USU has 17 scoring drives under 1min this year, 2nd nationally only to Alabama (20). Aggies punted on their first poss, then scored 7 straight TDs + a FG in the 1st H and led 52-2 at HT. That include a 100y pick-six. The starters only played one possession in the 3rd qrt. 61-19 F. 30-13 FD, 704-291 TY (7.7-4.3). 704 yards are tied for 9th most in the nation this year. NM lost 5 TOs (4 INTs), USU lost 3 fumbles (two late 3rd qrt not starters). Love 23-34-448-4-0. USU as a team passed for 516, second most in school history. This USU team is one for the ages.

San Jose St snapped a 7 game losing streak and their 50 pts vs UNLV were their second most vs FBS team in 5 years. A SJSt INT got things started for a short field UNLV TD. SJSt scored 2 TDs then a UNLV INT handed SJSt 3 easy pts for a 17-7 SJSt lead. But UNLV would score back-to-back TDs including a 75yarder and lead 21-17. SJSt grabbed the lead back 24-21 HT. SJSt added to the lead...31-21 to open the 3rd then UNLV was SOD near midfield for the second time and SJSt took that for another TD…38-21. UNLV responded with a TD, but couldn’t keep up from here as an INT was ret’d 50y for TD and another INT gave SJSt their second freebie FG of the night….eventually it was 50-37 F. FDs even, UNLV had 554-506 TY (6.4-6.6), but Rebels were -2 TO margin. UNLV was missing some players in the defensive backfield and it showed: Love 25-36-335-4-1. Nevens 22att-103-TD - Gilliam 28-50-387-4-3, 56y rushing w/ TD. Lexington Thomas held to 19att-61. UNLV Fr WR Collins caught 9-170-4TDs (4TD tied school record).

Boise won for the first time at Falcon stadium. The first 6 possessions of the Boise – Air Force game were TDs! Tied 21-21. The next two poss were punts, then Boise was SOD and AF took a 28-21 lead! Boise tied with a TD :05 left in the half. 28-28 with Boise having a 340-278 yard edge and 19-13 FD edge. AF gained just 25y on their first two poss of the 3rd and Boise went up 38-28 (aided by a 67y Avery Williams punt ret to the A05). AF converted a 4th down and finally got on the board with a 38y FG…38-31 end of 3rd. Boise added a FG, then AF drove 13p 75y converted 4th down along the way and made it 41-38 with 5min left in the game. Needing a stop they had Boise at 3rd-and-1, but Boise got FD then hit a 61y TD pass…48-38. AF converted 3rd-and-20, but only gained 4y on a 4th-and-5 ending the game at midfield and Boise killed the clock. Boise 26-23 FD, 530-443 TY (7.7-6.6). No turnovers. AF held a 201-121 RY edge (3.9-3.7). AF had more passing yards than rushing yards. Rypien 20-34-399-5-0 [Rypien is 250 shy of becoming MWC all-time passer]. Mattison 22att-137-TD. Hightower 8att-182-3TD. - Sanders 10-15-210-2-0, leading rusher 28att-97-TD.

It was tough going for Hawaii. UH was just the second team to score on the opening possesion vs Fresno this year. 3-0. Fresno punted, UH converted a 3rd down, but a false start negated it and they punted. Fresno took a 7-3 lead on their second possession. Fresno scored again to make it 14-3, but UH came right back with a 50y TD pass. 14-10. Fresno got a 76y TD run, then UH forced a FG after a goal-line stand…24-10. UH kicked a 28y FG…24-13. Fresno scored with :58 left xpt missed…30-13. Hawaii was trying to get some late 2nd qrt pts and ended up at the F35 with :03 left. They lined up for 53y FG (supposedly kid had made one in pregame warmups), Fresno called timeout put a man deep in case the kick was short. Short it was, UH apparently was prepared for this as several of their players sprinted down to cover the kick, problem being that the Fresno player simply ran around them and down the sideline he went 100y to make it 37-13 HT with a 354-235 yard edge. Fresno added a quick 10 pts in the 3rd, an opening 32y FG and then a 16y “drive” after an INT…47-13. UH fumbled a handoff a the F38, UH was SOD after Ursua came back for a catch and his momentum caused the catch to be marked 1 yard short. Fresno kicked a 21y FG…50-13 early 4th. UH put in Moussa at QB (predetermined he would be #2 instead of Cordeiro to preserve 3 more games for him to appear in). UH went 3-and-out with Moussa, Fresno missed a 38y FG. UH scored TD with 1:37 left and kicked off deep…50-20 F. Fresno had 24-19 FD and 562-374 TY edge (7.9-6.1), +2 TOs. UH 50% 3rd down, Fresno 46%. Mykal Walker had 3.5TFL for Fresno. Fresno has held opponents below 30pts for their 20th straight game – longest streak in the nation.

Nevada has won back-to-back games under Norvell for the first time. They had to come back from a 14-0 deficit vs San Diego State. SDSt was called for holding in the EZ for a safety and Nevada got a 40y Taua TD catch…14-9. Nev took the lead on a 26y TD pass mid 2nd qrt…15-14 (missed xpt). SDSt retook the lead on a 11p 73y drive with a 26y FG then a 30y TD pass put them up 24-15 late 2nd. Jasmin fumbled at the N47 when SDSt could’ve potentially got in position for more pts with :16 left. 24-15 HT. Nev scored 10 pts to open the 3rd qrt and led 25-24. Good SDSt punting kept Nev backed up on the ensuing drives until Nev was able to flip field pos with a 49y punt to the S18 that was muffed and Nev got a 34y FG out of it…28-24 mid 4th. SDSt would be SOD at the N41 with 2min left. Nev was forced to punt with 1min left but downed it a the S01, SDSt did manage to get to the N35 but ran out of time. SDSt had 24-14 FD and 456-297 TY (5.9-4.5). SDSt -2TOs.

1. The punt shift play was one of the most chickenshit plays (coaching moves) that I have seen since I started watching college football. Simulating the snap by "shifting" in that way was just bush league crap and I lost all respect for Gundy. He is a man, well over 40 now and shouldn't be teaching his kids to essentially cheat.

2. Lol TCU. Until I saw the boxscore, I didn't realize they should have won by 24.

3. I did not confirm it but have no reason to disbelieve it, EMU ran 11 first half plays

As amazing as that is, Eastern Michigan was in position to tie after their second possession of the 3rd quarter. Just such a testament to the EM D to keep them in the game to force Army to kick 3 FGs from the 10 yard line - in. Army had the ball for 23 minutes and change in the first half!

Way the schedule has worked, EM will be playing their 10th straight game without a bye coming up. After last year and the way some of the games this year has gone, that team must have a ton of resiliency.

PAC 12

Utah went 3-and-out, but UCLA fumbled the punt at their own 5, Utah had to settle for a 22y FG. 3-0. UCLA took a 7-3 lead when Kelley got a 25y TD run on 4th down. UCLA D got an INT in the EZ to stop a Utah drive where Moss had just ripped a 60y run. But it was all downhill from here for the Bruins. Utah scored TDs on their next two possessions and led 17-7 HT with Moss having 16att-145 in the half on his way to a career game. UCLA could only manage a FG in the 2nd H and threw two INTs. Be it by turnover or special teams, Utah had some drives start with great field position (4 drives started deep in Bruin territory - Covey had a 30y and 36y punt returns). Utah scored 3 straight TDs in the 2nd H and their final possession ended in a FG…41-10 F. Utah had 26-17 FD, 470-291 TY (6.5-4.4) with a 325-127 RY (6.5-4.9) edge. UCLA -2TO margin. Huntley 13-21-138-0-1, 22y rushing. Moss 26att-211-3TD - Speight 20-40-164-0-2. Kelley 16att-90-TD. Utah D only got 1 sack.

Oregon State came into the game at Colorado having lost 22 straight road games. They left the game tied with the second biggest comeback in school history! CU started slow gaining just 40 yards on their first 3 possessions of the game, but would build a 24-3 HT lead as OSU only crossed midfield once, for a 29y FG. CU extended the leady to 31-3 on the first play of the 3rd qrt with a 75y run. OSU started 3rd string QB Colletto again this week with #2 out and #1 Jake Luton being “available”. Luton had only played in 5 quarters this year and last played in week 3. He was not 100%, but wanted to go and coaches put him out there. On his first drive he converted three 3rd downs and two 4th downs with completed passes and OSU cut it 31-10. Teams traded punts, then OSU blk’d a 46y FG. They brought Colletto back in for a short yardage goal line play and it was 31-17 a couple plays into the 4th. CU was SOD at the O43 and OSU moved that for a 35y FG…31-20 9min left. CU went 3-and-out and OSU quickly went 5p 63y for TD….2pt good…it was just 31-28!! CU drove for a 1st down at the O15. On 3rd-and-5 Montez ran for 6 yards, but holding brought it back and CU would have to settle for a 34y FG…34-28 2min left. OSU drove to the C12 with a 1st down (aided by a 15y penalty on the drive). Facing 4th-and-8 from the 10 Luton hit a 10y TD pass and Beavers were on the verge of taking the lead! But the xpt was no good!! 34-34 :29 left. CU made it to the O36 but would miss a 53y FG and they go to OT. OSU converted 3rd down twice then got a TD on another 3rd down to lead 41-34. CU was sacked, then got a 21y pass to the 7. After a Montez rush for no gain, they threw 3 straight incompletions and the Beavers win snapping a 13 game PAC12 losing streak and winning as a 25pt underdog! CU had 536-459 TY edge (7.1-4.6) with 217-114 RY edge (6.0-2.5). Only turnover was an OSU INT. CU 2-of-4 FGs. CU was just 4-of-15 3rd down, 0-for-2 4th down - OSU was 11-of-24 3rd down and 3-of-3 4th down. CU D did get 6 sacks. Luton (2nd H only) 28-39-310-3-0. Jefferson 30att-135. Hodgins 11rec-146-2TD - Montez 24-39-319-2-0, 49y rushing. McMillian 20att-132-TD (long 75). Nixon 13att-198-2TD. LB Landman had 4TFL. Shenault DNP. Luton was named PAC12 O POW.

USC opened the scoring with an 82y punt ret TD, but USC’s O was nonexistent behind 3rd string QB Jake Sears gaining just 46 yards on their first 4 possessions. ASU would reel off 24 straight pts including a 3y “drive” after a sack/fumble. With 1:46 USC’s drive got a boost in field position with a targeting penalty, then a D PI call on 3rd down kept the drive alive and SC cut it to 24-14 at the end of the quarter…ASU had a yardage edge 286-116 (7.1-4.5). SC opened with a TD in the 3rd then Manny fumbled after a 10y gain and SC used a WR-pass for 1p 36y “drive”…28-24. Punts. ASU missed a 50y FG. Vaughns dropped a would-be 45y TD pass and had to punt…N’Keal Harry took that 92y to give ASU the lead again…31-28 late 3rd. Punts. SC drove to the A20 and faced 4-and-1 trailing by 3, they brought out the FG unit, then called timeout and decided to go for it passing on the 38y FGA and Ware was stuffed. Harry made a Beckham-esque catch. ASU punted, but flipped the field position. SC punted back and with 1:33 left SC starting calling timeouts, ASU had a 3rd-and-1 at SC45 when Wilkins kept it 45y to make it 38-28. SC scored with :45 left then ASU got the onside kick. FD even, ASU had 449-420 TY edge (6.6-6.7) including 283-149 RY (6.4-4.5). Each team lost a fumble. ASU was 8-of-15 3rd down, SC just 2-of-11. Wilkins 14-22-166-1-0, 89y rushing w/ TD. Benjamin 29att-185-2TD. Harry had 203y all-purpose. - Sears 20-28-235-2-0, 22y net rushing. Ware 13att-64. SC lost for the first time at home since Helton took over. Harry was PAC12 ST POW.

Washington went 14p 64y with Browning running 9y on a 4th-and-8 and led 7-0 mid 1st qrt. Cal got a good KO ret to start in UW territory and got a 23y FG out of it…7-3. UW was driving and had 1st down at C29, but Browning was INT’d at the 19 (may’ve been WR Fuller’s fault). UW O would gain just 16y the rest of the half. Cal DL created pressure often rushing just 3 or 4. Cal drove 14p 62y converting 3rd down 3x and managed a 35y FG….7-6 mid 2nd. After a UW 3-and-out, Cal drove to the W06, but holding brought it back then Garbers was sacked and after an 11p 50y drive missed a 41y FG as time expired in the half…7-6. Cal had a 166-132 yard edge, FDs were 9-8. Browning was 6-13-67-1-1 and Garbers was 10-15-100-0-0 in the half. UW got a 41y pass, but then went for a 4th down and Browning was sacked/grounding penalty. Two Cal punts were sandwiched around a UW 3-and-out. Peterson had seen enough benched Browning and turned to rFr QB Haener who had never taken a snap other than mop-up duty vs North Dakota. He did not appear particularly ready or skilled. Haener’s first pass attempt was way short and his second was INT’d and returned 37y giving Cal their only TD of the game 12-7 (2pt no good) end of 3rd. Haener got one more series then Browning returned, but UW punted from C40. On the next Cal punt Fuller ret’d it 28y to the C22, but UW had to settle for a 26y FG with 4:51 left in the game…12-10. UW only had 1 timeout left and kicked off deep, Cal converted one 3rd down and was able to kill the clock. Cal had 14-13 FD edge, UW had 250-242 TY edge. RY even at 91. UW -2TOs. UW D had 4 sacks (Cal 2). Cal 38-31% 3rd down. Garbers 16-23-153-0-0. Laird 22att-83. - Browning 11-21-148-1-1. Pleasant 12att-62. Gaskins DNP. Cal LB Weaver who got the pick-six was PAC12 D POW.

Washington State and Stanford traded TDs to open, then WSU got a short field TD after a fumble…14-7. Stan scored 3 straight TDs as WSU punted 3 straight…28-14. WSU drove for a 23y FG as time expired in the half…28-17. Minshew came out in the 2nd H hitting his first NINETEEN passes. 31-24 end of 3rd. WSU tied early 4th…31-31. Stan was SOD at W32 9min left. WSU converted 4th-and-1 on their way for a 38-31 lead 4min left. Stan went 73y to tie with just 1:25 left…38-38. WSU got a 35y pass on 3rd down and ended up at the S25 making a 42y FG with :19 left. Stan got across midfield but ran out of time. Stan 27-24 FD, WSU 497-443 TY (7.2-6.7). Stan was 62% 3rd down (1-of-2 4th), WSU 46% (1-of-1 4th). Minshew 40-50-438-3-0. Patmon 10rec-127. – Costello 34-43-323-4-0. Love 6att-71, 4rec-14. Smith/Whiteside combined 19rec-223-3TD.

Oregon has had some forgettable games in Tucson, add this one to the list. Ducks went 3-and-out 3x to open, had just 1 FD in the 1st qrt and fumbled at their own 21, threw INT ret’d to the O06, had a punt blk’d at their own 16, ret’d to the O06, but Oregon D held Arizona to just 16pts at that point. Kentucky’s first 4 drives got into Missouri territory but only resulted in 3 pts. UM led 14-3 at HT with a missed FG on their opening drive.
