Goodbye to Romance College Football
A brief recap can't do Red River Shootout justice. Texas would lead 28-7 with big plays and short fields following a blk'd punt and an INT. Oklahoma got within 28-14 on a 4th-1 66y run by backup QB Caleb Williams. Rattler would fumble in the 2nd Q and Williams replaced him. Bijan Robinson had an amazing 51y run down to the 2 yard line that will make every RRS highlight reel forever. Was 38-20 HT Horns. They traded FGs to open the 2nd H then OU scored 28 straight pts (3 TD, FG, 2pt conv) to tie the game 41-41! Texas fumbled KO and OU got a 17y drive to lead for the first time 48-41 7min left. After exchange of punts, Texas tied it with just 1:23 left. Caleb Williams led OU down the field and Kennedy Brooks took a direct snap at the T33, faked a handoff and raced into the EZ with just :03 left for the dramatic 55-48 Final. Caleb Williams played the entire 2nd H except for maybe the 2 pt conversion OU completed. Williams 16-25-212-2-0, 88y rushing (66 on one play). Rattler 8-15-111-0-1. Brooks 25-217-2TD. Thompson 20-34-388-5-0 (with thumb injured in 2nd Q). Bijan Robinson 20-137-TD, had phenominal 51y run 1st H. Robinson had a 33y run in 2nd H, but then just 14y on 8 other 2nd H carries. OU outgained them 662-516 (8.2-8.5)

From one shootout to another, Arkansas and Ole Miss combined for 41 4th Q pts! Ark led 7-0 and 14-6 early ,but would never lead again although they frequently tied it. Ole Miss went up 21-14 and 24-14, but that would be the biggest lead and the game would be tied at 24-24, 31-31, 38-38, 45-45 before Ole Miss went up 52-45 with just 1min left. Ark went down the field, scored TD on the final play of the game, elected to go for 2 and the win which was incomplete. Ark outgained them 676-611 (7.3-8.7). Each team rushed for over 300y. OM was just 5-of-14 3rd down, but 4-of-5 4th down. Ark was 9-of-15 combined 3rd/4th down. Ark -2 tunovers, one fumble in OM terr, one INT to end 1st H.

Last week Tennessee jumped out to a 28-3 lead, this week vs South Carolina they did even better 35-0 (one short field TD after fumble recovery). Vols would actually score on 6 of their first 7 possessions to lead 38-7 HT. SC threw INT in EZ on a trick play from the T02 1st Q. Vols O lost the momentum in the 2nd H not crossing midfield on their first 4 2nd H possessions, while SC got within 38-20 (fake punt TD and 2pt no good on second TD) before UT turned it back on and won 45-20. UT outgained them 472-370 (6.6-4.9). UT outrushed them 247-153 (5.0-3.7). Vols went 12-of-17 3rd down! SC D did register 6 sacks.

Florida scored TDs on their first two poss then went INT, punt, punt. Vandy actually had a couple drives but missed 39 and 41y FGs in the 1st H. It was just 14-0 until late 2nd Q when an INT led to UF going up 21-0. Vandy had long drive for 1st and goal at F01, but had a TD catch overturned by replay on 4th down. UF only outgained them 215-200 in the 1st H and Mullen was pissed at the halftime interview. UF scored 3 straight TDs in the 3rd Q before a UF INT stopped the scoring. Vandy missed their third FG of the day and UF went on to win 42-0 (no scoring 4th Q). UF 479-287 (7.7-3.6) TY edge. UF was just 2-of-9 3rd down.

Baylor had lots of big plays early and built a quick 21-7 lead. 28-10 HT. 3rd Q WV had 1st down at the B11, but would have to settle for 27y FG then Baylor made it 35-13 mid 2nd Q ending realistic hopes of a comeback. 42-13, 45-13, 45-20 F. Bay outgained them 525-362 (8.3-4.8). 171-90 (5.3-2.4) RY edge. Neither team was strong on 3rd down, Baylor 3-of-11 (2-of-2 4th down), WV 3-of-15 3rd down (zero 4th down att). Baylor D 6 sacks and 6 additional QBH.

Ohio St led 14-3 end of 1st Q with 157-47 yard edge. Maryland made it 21-10 mid 2nd Q, but OSU quickly went back up 28-10. Late 1st H Maryland had 1st down at O11, but were sacked on 4th down. OSU made it 35-10 before the break. OSU outscored them 21-7 2nd Q, but TY were just 172-142 for Bucks. OSU scored on every real 2nd H possession and added a 70y pick-six winning 66-17. TY 598-335 (8.4-4.5). RY 166-56 (5.0-1.6). Stroud 24-33-406-5-0. Tagovailoa 28-39-279-2-2. OSU D 5 sacks.

Michigan State got TDs of 94, 65, 63 and 63 yards! WR Jalen Nailor had 221y on just 5 catches and 3 TDs! RB Kenneth Walker ran for 233 on 29att with the 94y TD run (school record). First time school history MSU had 300y passer, 200y rusher and 200y receiver. MSU outgained them 588-377 (9.0-4.9)(454y between Nailor and Walker). Rutgers was shut out in the 2nd H, although the Knights were SOD at the M08, fumbled at M40 and SOD at M31 on their final 3 possessions. In the 1st H Rutgers kicked FGs from the M08 and M11 (this was a 2y "drive" following fumble recovery). For their part ,MSU was SOD at the R28 and was 1-for-2 on RZ FGs.

Akron won 35-20 but it didn't look good early, far from it. Akron had -13y on their first 4 possessions with 2 sacks and 2 turnovers among them!! BG had 140y on their first 4 possessions. BG scored TD on opening poss, then kicked FG from A18 and A08. BG was also SOD at the A01 in the 1st Q. Akron was on life support, but drove for TD (actually had TD called back by illegal motion, but still scored TD that drive) to make it 13-7, then with under 2min left in the half, Akron D got a tipped pass INT, but Akron had a FG blk'd to end the 1st H at 13-7. Akron QB Kato Nelson, a multi-year starter, was starting this game as DJ Irons was injured last week. Nelson took a hard hit on the last drive of the 1st H and would come out in street clothes to start the 3rd. Fortunately for Akron, their 3rd string QB got starting experience last year and he played phenomenal. Gibson went 4-for-4 leading Zips down the field to take 14-13 lead and they never looked back. 21-13, 28-13, 35-13 in the 4th Q. BG made it 35-20 mid 4th, then BG blk'd a punt late, but any chance at a comeback vanished with an INT in the EZ. Akron only outgained them 385-364 (6-5.3) and outrushed them 117-107 (3.0-3.1). Gibson 14-15-177-3-0. McDonald 21-35-257-2-3. BG lost 5 turnovers, Akron lost 2.

Northern Illinois owned a 41-19 TOP edge in their upset at Toledo! NIU did have to settle for four 1st H FGs, missing one of them which kept UT in the game. It was 6-0 2nd Q before UT took a 7-6 lead, NIU's 3rd FG made it 9-7, but UT went up 14-9. NIU got a 37y TD run in the final minute of the 1st H to lead 16-14. NIU outgained them 286-197 in the 1st H. After a scoreless 3rd Q, NIU went up 19-14 on their 5th FG of the day. 6min left. UT was driving and NIU was called for D PI on 4th-12 at the N26. UT scored next play to take 20-14 lead (2pt no good). With just over 3min left, NIU moved it down inside the T10 after a 34y pass. NIU ran the ball 3x killing clock and kicked their final FG of the day, a 29 yarder with :29 left. Toledo never threatened in the final seconds. NIU outgained them 396-371 (5.0-7.0) and had 23-15 FD edge. NIU outrushed them 242-135 (4.4-6.1). UT was just 1-of-10 3rd down! Koback did have 40y and 75y TDs as part of his 176 total yards. UT used both QBs as they have been doing, they combined just 16-31-236-2-0, Finn rushed for 25y. Lombardi 14-24-154-0-1, 90y rushing.

I'll get more later going to get ready for NASCAR and NFL
Funny allegedly the NASCAR 'ship is here this year?

I couldn't tell you where the track is and I've lived in the Valley 23 years. It's somewhere South of me

Yes, it was there last year too. It used to always be in Miami, but they wanted to change it for last year. I don't know where the track is, but whenever they show it on TV there is nothing around it.

Georgia Tech scored first two possessions 14-0, threw INT, but Duke SOD. 17-7 after short GT FG. 17-14 HT. Duke D got another INT and turned that one into a FG to tie 17-17. Was 24-24 when Duke was able to go up on a short FG 27-24 5min left. GT was on a run of three straight 3-and-out punts and Duke had the ball with 3:33, GT had all 3 timeouts. Mataeo ran 4 straight times but when gaining his second FD, Duke was called for holding creating a 2nd-15. Duke ran for 0 and 1y loss punting the ball back with 1:42. It took GT less than 1min to go 88 yards capped with a diving 36y TD catch for the 31-27 lead. Duke was INT’d at the GT20 with :15 left. Duke had 489-440 (5.4-6.9) TY edge, 27-17 FD edge, 197-143 RY edge behind a school record 42 carries for Mataeo (152y). Sims 12-25-297-3-2 and GT leading rusher 12-55-TD. GT was only 4-of-13 3rd down, Duke 9-of-21 (2-of-3 4th down). Duke missed 42 and 31 y FGs and scored just 2 TDs on 6 RZ trips.

Old Dominion led 10-6 HT at Marshall! Four of MU’s five 1st H drives were SOD at OD22, FG from OD26, punt from OD40 and FG from OD5. MU was INT’d at the OD10 to start the 3rd Q and were INT’d again at the OD23 near the end of the 3rd Q – ODU gave that one right back throwing INT at the goal line early 4th Q. MU was SOD at the OD40 and ODU drove that possession down for a 45y FG and 13-6 lead under 3min left in the game. MU was able to tie on 52y TD with just :33. ODU got in position for a 52y FG that fell just short at time expired in regulation. MU scored TD in OT and ODU could not respond. MU had 390-314 (5.0-4.3) TY edge, although that was 150y below MU’s ssn avg. Grant Wells threw 2 more INTs and now has tossed 9 total INTs on the year (had 9 in ten games last year). ODU 50% 3rd down, MU 33%. ODU D got 3 sacks, MU 4 sacks.

Wisconsin outgained Illinois 491-93 (6.1-2.0) in the 24-0 win. 30-9 FD and 391-26 RY (6.4-2.0) edges as well. Badgers should’ve had more points. They kicked FG from IL07, threw INT at IL03 from the 40 yard line, fumbled at the IL27, punted from the IL38 and ended the game at the IL22. Every possession but two ended ILL territory, but UW only scored on 4 of the 8. ILL ran a total of 8 plays in UW territory, all on their final drive of the game. Peters was knocked out of game in the 2nd Q. ILL QBs combined for just 11-34-67-0-0. ILL converted just 1 of 12 3rd down attempts.

Louisville defense gave up their second consecutive game losing drive and Virginia won their second consecutive game on a walk off FG miss! Virginia won back-to-back ACC games for the first time since 2011! Virginia would lead 13-10 HT. LV scored on 4 straight possessions with a couple short field FGs following UVA INTs for a 30-13 lead entering the 4th Q. According to ACC Network's research, ACC teams leading by 17+ pts in the 4th Q had won 531 of 533 games the last 15 years. Well, guess what? LV’s O went cold with back-to-back 3-and-outs. UVA made it a 30-27 game mid 4th, but LV D forced a punt with 4min left with hopes of killing the clock and picking up first downs. They busted a 53y run being caught from behind then rushed for 1, 5 and 1 yard setting up a 40y FG on 4th-5 with 2:22 left to lead by 6. UVA converted 4th down twice, overcame two offensive penalties and scored the game winning TD with just :22 left. 34-33 LV’s time expiring 49y FG was no good. LV attempted 6 FGs in the game, made 4 from the 28, 28, 38 and 40 yard lines. LV scored TD on just 1 of their 4 RZ trips (UVA was 4-of-6 RZ TDs). UVA outgained them 522-503 (6.1-8.1). UVA QB Armstrong passed for the second most yards in school history -487 (he already owns the record from this year’s UNC game –554)

Eastern Mich threw INT on their 1st possession, Miami Oh’s first 3 drives all went 50+y resulting in 2 made FGs and 1 miss. 6-0. EM got TD, then short field for FG following fumble recovery...10-6 HT. EM extended to a 13-6 lead in the 3rd Q, but Mia continued to have solid drives stall for FGs...13-12 with 6min left. Miami’s final drive was SOD at the E42. Miami TY edge 385-257 (5.7-4.0) and RY edge 126-51 (4.3-1.5). First game since week 1 Miami did not play both Gabbert and Mayer. Miami D got 6 sacks and 12 TFLs total. If accurate, EM was credited with 17 QBH.

Ball St and Western Michigan were locked in a tight game for most of 3 quarters Ball St led 7-0, then WM would have leads of 14-7, 17-14 and 20-17. Ball St took a 24-20 lead late 3rd Q then WM threw back-to-back INTs setting up Ball St on short fields and their lead grew to 38-20. WM was then SOD and their next possession Eleby was sacked/fumbled which Ball St ret’d 18y for TD in the 45-20 F! One of Ball St’s 1st H TDs was also set up on a short field after a fumble recovery. All told, Ball St got 3 TDs off a total of 100 yards of O on 3 separate drives after turnovers then also got a fumble ret TD for 28 of their 45 pts coming off turnovers. WM was one of five teams who had yet to throw an INT entering the game. Eleby was hit on one of the INTs and the other bounced off receivers facemask. WM did outgain them by a yard 376-375 (4.5-6.9) and outrushed them 119-65 (2.4-2.3). WM kicked two FGs from inside the B05. Ball St D got 4 sacks. Plitt 15-25-310-4-0

Central Michigan won a controversial 30-27 game at Ohio. A tight game with each team winning at various points came down to the 4th Q. Ohio faced a 4th down at their own 33, they had converted 3-for-3 on 4th down prior. With Under 3min to go trailing by 3, there was a no call PI that brought up 4th-and-2, but a player on the Ohio bench was called for unsportsman like conduct (verbal towards ref) that created a 4th-17 instead and OU punted with all 3 timeouts. CM was able to kill the final 2-1/2minutes. CM did outgain them 461-369 (6.5-5.7) and outrushed them 204-179 (5.0-3.9). Teams equally struggled on 3rd down, OU had success on 4th down. Rogers played every snap at QB for OU first time this season and was efficient passing 13-18-190-0-0, although limited rushing to 15att-37y-TD. Richardson was the sole QB for CM 16-30-257-1-2. CM RB Nichols 30-186-TD. There were several FGs kicked from in or near the RZ by both teams. CM D 10 TFL.

Syracuse had leads of 7-3, 14-3, 14-10, 21-10, 21-17 in the 1st H. After Cuse scored TDs on 3 of their first 4 drives, Wake Forest D seemed to adjust and Cuse would punt from own territory 4 straght. WF trimmed the lead to 1 after HT and then went up 26-21 before Cuse reclaimed the lead 27-26 (each team failed 2pt conversions on those scores). WF then went up 34-27 (2pt good) with just 3:23 left. After a fumble in their own territory, Cuse D forced a punt, but it was downed at the S06 with 2:21. Cuse was able to go the length of the field scoring TD with just :15 left. Syracuse wanted to go for 2, but players were huddled on the sideline not ready for the play and they were hit with a delay of game forcing an xpt instead and a tie game. In OT Cuse was forced to kick a FG and WF got a TD to win 40-37. The confusion on the would-be game ending 2pt call was not the only criticism Babers would face. Earlier in the game, WF had an incomplete pass on 3rd-13 bringing up 4th down and would likely attempt a 51y FG. Instead Babers accepted a holding penalty and WF would convert that 3rd-and-23 and go on for a TD. Early 4th Q Cuse had been gashing WF on the ground, but opted to kick a FG on 4th-2 at W27 which would’ve put them up 4, but it was missed. Cuse did outgain them 514-426 (6.0-6.2) behind a 354-96 RY edge (6.1-2.6). Shrader ran 29-178-TD and Tucker 26-155-2TD. Hartman 19-32-330-3-1 w/ two 100+y receivers.

Mack Brown is now 0-8 vs Florida State in both stints as UNC HC. UNC did lead 10-0 after 1st Q, but FSU scored 3 TDs in the 2nd Q to lead 21-10 HT. UNC only had 2.5 possessions in the 2nd Q which were 3-and-out punt, INT in EZ and end of half at F49. FSU went 3-and-out to start the 3rd Q and UNC got TD to make it 21-17 game. Any hopes of a comeback were dashed when FSU got a 44y pass plus a roughing passer penalty and soon a 28-17 lead then Heels went 3-and-out and FSU added another TD 35-17 end of 3rd Q. UNC was SOD at F05 and would score TD on their final possession to make it 35-25 F. UNC did outgain them 432-383 (6.4-7.1), although FSU outrushed them 238-229 (5.8-6.4). FSU faced only 10 3rd downs and converted 7. Travis 11-13-145-3-0, leading rusher 14-121-2TD. Howell 17-32-203-2-1, leading rusher 11-108.

Liberty won 41-13 with a 449-265 (6.2.-4.2) TY edge including RY 227-35 (5.4-1.7). Willis did throw 3 INTs, one led to a short field MTSU TD.

UMass snaps 16 game losing streak by beating UConn 27-13. Game was tied 7-7 and 10-10 entering 4th Q. UMass would outscore them 17-3 in the final Q. UMass outgained them 407-291 (5.2-5.3) and outrushed them 247-163 (4.4-5.3) behind Merriweather’s 39att-171-2TD effort.

UAB got their first win in their new stadium 31-14 vs FAU. Turnovers were big for the Blazers after a 7-0 lead, UAB recovered a fumble in the RZ and soon led 14-0. FAU tied at 14-14. UAB was leading 17-14 when the game changing play happened. FAU had 2nd down at AB09 with under 1min left in the half when UAB got a 100y pick-six for a 24-14 lead and FAU could never recover. UAB only outgained them 306-280 (5.3-3.7) and 133-41 (3.9-1.1) RY. FAU lost 4 turnovers and UAB D got 8 sacks.

Colorado St scored first and never trailed. CSU was in the RZ 6x and only scored 1 TD and kicked 5 FGs! In total CSU kicked 6 FGs. Experienced San Jose backup QB Nick Nash had a poor game completing just 50% with an INT deep in CSU terr 1st Q and a fumble deep in SJ terr 4th Q. With all the short FGs and a garbage SJ score late it makes the 32-14 look a little better than it was. CSU outgained them 449-267 (5.9-5.0) and outrushed them 217-113 (4.1-3.6). 68 of SJ’s yards were on their final drive. TE McBride continues to be the #1 target for Rams. Less heralded SJ TE Derek Deese also was the leading target in the SJ passing game. CSU QB Centeio had his best game of the year 19-23-232-1-0, 37y rushing.

BYU lost 3 fumbles vs Boise after not losing any fumbles all year. BYU led 10-3 2nd Q when BYU fumbled at their own 22 leading to a Boise TD...10-10. BYU would then fumble the ensuing KO leading to a 17-10 Boise lead. 14 pts off just 47y of O. Was 20-10 HT and 23-10 3rd Q. BYU was driving to get back into it when they fumbled at Boise 18 and BYU’s next possession was SOD at the Boise 05 early 4th Q. BYU did manage to make it 23-17, but Boise kicked a short FG with under 4min to go. 26-17 F. BYU outgained them 413-312 (6.5-4.2). Boise outrushed them 140-111 (3.1-4.1). Hall 22-37-302-1-1. Bachmeier 18-29-172-0-0.

SMU went up 7-0 on a 4th-1 66y TD pass, but Navy scored TDs on their second and third possessions to lead 14-7. SMU threw INT in the EZ from the N04 on FD, then on SMU’s next possession Navy D got a sack/fumble scoop-score TD to lead 21-7! SMU ret’d the ensuing KO for TD and then scored TD with 2min left in the half to tie 21-21 (SMU actually got ball back but missed 51y FGA as time expired). SMU outgained them 278-162 HT. Navy’s O would struggle, while the Mids D played well. SMU kicked FG after having FD at the N15 (bad snap) and Navy made a 50y FG to tie 24-24 end 3rd. SMU went up 31-24 and Navy’s final two poss were SOD N42 (SMU punted) and SOD N19 with 2:41 left (SMU picked up 1 FD then knees). SMU outgained them 404-241 (5.9-4.0). Navy only ran for 177 (3.3) and SMU had 22-12 FD edge. Ponies were limited to just 2-of-11 3rd down, but converted two 4th downs.

Penn State threw 3 INTs in the 1st H ,Iowa threw 1 back for a PSU net –2 in the half (PSU -3 for game). Iowa used that INT for a 4p (-8)y “drive” for FG and a 3-and-out punt after the other 1st H INT. When Penn St wasn’t throwing INTs, they scored on 3 of their other 4 possessions. PSU led 14-3 after the 1st Q. Then Clifford was knocked out of the game with Penn St leading 17-3 early 2nd Q. Nits led 17-10 HT. 192-139 TY edge for Penn St at HT (Iowa had one sustained drive for 75 of their 139y). Neither team could run, PSU ran for 41y (Clifford 36y), Iowa 56y in the 1st H. Without Clifford PSU O was only able to barely sustain one drive in the 2nd H that went for a 44y FG to extend lead to 20-10. Including that poss, PSU only gained FDs on two of their eight 2nd H drives. Iowa enjoyed great field position in the game, especially in the 2nd H with drives starting at own 43 (PSU drives started at own 19). Iowa answered the Penn St FG...20-13, kicked another FG...20-16. Mid 4th Q Iowa ran a misdirection throwback for a 44y TD and the 23-20 lead. PSU was SOD at I45 and then threw INT at own 25 with 2min left (unsportsman like penalty moved them back). Iowa actually took knees even though they could not run the clock out and punted back to PSU with :39 left. PSU ended the game with 3 straight incompletions. Penn State was called for 8 false start penalties after Clifford went out. Iowa outgained them 305-287 (4.0-3.6) with slight edge rushing 110-107 (2.4-3.2). Clifford in one half of football 15-25-146-0-2, 36y rushing. Backup Robinson 7-21-34-0-2, 27y rushing. Petras 17-31-195-2-1. PSU D had 11 TFLs, Iowa had 2.

Oregon State and Washington State moved the ball but failed to put up many points. Ore St led 10-3 HT. The teams traded INTs at the end of the 1st H. OSU’s INT should’ve handed Wazzou some easy pts deep in own territory with :51 left at Beavs 28, but Wazzou threw it back 5 plays later, which nearly would’ve been a 100y pick-six but OSU LB just barely stepped OOB on his return. OSU must’ve felt like they needed a spark on the first poss of the 3rd Q, Beavs faced a 4th-8 at midfield, they ran a fake punt, with the punter attempting a pass, it just so happens that Wazzou’s best CB was covering the OSU gunner and the play was broken up. Wazzou would take that possession to tie 10-10. OSU threw INT at W05 on their next possession. Wazzou went up 17-10, but OSU tied 17-17. 4th Q. Wazzou went back up 24-17, but OSU tied 24-24. Wazzou scored their fourth straight TD to take a 31-24 lead under 6min left. A D PI call kept OSU drive alive on 4th down, but Beavs would later face 4th-19 at W23. Cougs allowed them to throw short and the receiver was tackled a half yard short of converting to end the game. W St outgained them 491-467 (7.0-6.6). OSU outrushed them 309-92 (6.9-3.8). Nolan 11-25-158-0-2. de Laura 32-46-399-3-1.

Georgia trailed for the first time this season when Dawgs D allowed the first points allowed on an opening drive this season as Auburn opened 3-0. UGA went 3-and-out, but Auburn threw INT and Dawgs turned that into a 3-3 game. Would be 17-3 HT with Auburn failing to score in the RZ just before HT (4th down pass in EZ incomplete). UGA missed FG to open 2nd H, but after a Aub punt, scored on a 60y TD bomb...24-3. Auburn would score the first rushing TD allowed by Dawgs D this season, 24-10, but Tigers could get no closer, Georgia won 34-10. UGA outgained them 432-318 (6.2-4.4) including 201-46 (4.1-1.8) rushing. Dawg D 4 sacks.

Missouri led 31-7 HT. After scoring on five straight 1st H possessions, Mizzou went 3-and-out three straight to start the 3rd Q. Early 4th Q was 41-14 after Mizzou got a 40y pick-six. North Texas scored back-to-back TDs...41-28. Mizzou scored one, then North Texas hit a 77y TD...48-35. Mizzou recovered the onside kick and ran out the final 3 minutes. NT outgained them 493-474 (6.6-6.6) thanks to a big 2nd H. NT's final 3 drives of the game netted 208y. Mizzou ran for 314 (8.1) to NT 188 (3.8). NT had 11 TFL, Miz had 10.

Kentucky is 6-0 for the first time since 1950. LSU fumbled and was SOD on first two drives and UK would lead 14-0. Was 21-0, 21-7, 28-7, 35-7, 35-14, 35-21, 42-21 F. UK only outgained them 475-408 (7.7-5.6), but outrushed them 330-147 (7.3-4.2). UK D 4 sacks. UK converted just 2-of-7 3rd down (1-of-1 4th down). LSU 7-of-15 (2-of-5 4th down). Levis 14-17-145-3-0, 75y rushing 2TDs.

Alabama outgained Texas A&M 522-379 (6.4-6.5), but Tide threw INT at the AM01 and twice kicked FGs from inside the AM 10 yard lines. Tide were in RZ 6x and only scored 2 TDs. AM opened with a FG drive, Bama answered to lead 7-3. AM 3 chunk plays and would take 10-7 lead. Bama fumbled at own 44 and AM took that for a 17-7 lead - 1st Q yards were 155-146 for AM. Bama lost their second turnover with the INT at the 1 yard line. AM had to punt and then Calzada threw INT giving Bama a short field for FG...17-10. Unfazed AM went back up 24-10 which would be the HT score. AM outgained them 258-209 1st H. Bama was down at the AM31, but penalty and would eventually punt which they downed inside the 15. Bama blk'd the AM punt for TD to make it 24-17, but AM ret'd the KO! 31-17, but Bama quickly made it 31-24. AM punted and Bama was on the move again end of 3rd Q. TY for the 3rd Q was 160-10 for Bama! Two plays into the 4th Q Bama kicked FG...31-27. AM O continued to struggle punting the ball back and soon it would be just a 1pt game...31-30. AM again had to punt and with 5min left Bama took the lead 38-31! AM turned the O back on and quickly went down the field and tied 38-38 with 3min left! Calzada was hurt on the TD pass. Bama went 3-and-out, Calzada came back out and led his team down for game winning FG as time expired...41-38. Was a stretch in the 2nd H were AM got just 1 FD on 4 straight possessions and Bama scored 21 pts in that span (2 TDs with a 2pt conv and 2 FGs). AM D did get 4 sacks. Calzada 21-31-285-3-1. Young 28-48-369-3-1.

East Carolina and UCF were tied 3-3 HT, first time since 2015 UCF had not scored TD in 1st H! ECU had some chances to lead at HT. They fumbled at the CF08 on their first drive, punted from CF39, FG from the CF11. ECU outgained them 197-141 1st H (25y UCF yards came on time expiring final play of the half). ECU went up 6-3, but UCF took a 10-6 lead. ECU took 13-10 and then 16-10 lead on 34y FG mid 4th Q. UCF got 49y pass then couldn't get any further and kicked FG with 5min left. 16-13. ECU went 3-and-out. 1:50 to go UCF faced 4th-8 at EC43, they converted. Passed one more time to the EC27, then ran 4 straight times getting the game winning TD with :20 left. 20-16. ECU tried the pitchy-pitchy-woo-woo play but fumbled at CF37. ECU outgained them by 1 yard 360-359 (5.1-5.4). UCF outrushed them 165-141 (5.3-3.6). Teams combined for just 9-of-29 3rd down. UCF D had 4 sacks.

Texas State led 7-0 early, but South Alabama led 17-7 HT. Texas St threw 3 straight INTs in the 1st H (all led to short field scores by USA)! USA led 24-10 early 4th Q. TxSt converted 4th down twice (once on penalty) on a drive to make it 24-17 mid 4th Q. USA killed 4min of clock punted back to TxSt 3:17. TxSt went 85y and had to score a 4th-goal from the SA01 with :17 left to tie! 24-24. USA converted 4th-1 in OT and would get TD first, TxSt was able to tie. 31-31. TxSt missed 25y FG, then USA fumbled! Both teams failed their 2pt attempt in OT3. In OT4 TxSt got their 2pt play, USA failed, but TxSt was called for PI giving them another chance, which ultimately failed. 33-31 F. TxSt outgained them 399-329 (5.2-4.7). TxSt outrushed them 212-140 (4.4-3.2). USA was hit with 13 penalties for 125y! Teams combined just 8-of-27 3rd down, but both went 3-for-3 4th down.

ULM led 7-0! But Georgia State scored the next 35 pts. And would lead 35-14, 42-14, 49-14, 55-14, 55-21 F. GaSt outgained them 572-359 (6.6-5.2) and outrushed them 326-122 (5.6-3.3).

Nebraska was SOD at M04 on their first possession. They played a scoreless 1st Q. Nebraska then threw INT at own 16 early 2nd Q which Michigan turned into a 3-0 lead. Nebraska O didn't do much and Michigan had two long drives for a 13-0 HT lead (one of the FG drives was a TD, but replay overuled it as QBs knee was down before handoff TD run and Mich kicked short FG). Nebraska came out with a TD in the 3rd Q, and after exchange of punts (which Michigan muffed theirs, but refs ruled "joint possession" so Michigan kept it), Michigan had a long TD drive to make it 19-7 (2pt no good). Nebraska drove for TD and then Michigan threw INT and with good return, Neb was set up at M13. Nebraska quickly turned that into a 22-19 lead late 3rd Q! Michigan retook a 26-22 lead, but Nebraska came right back. 29-26. 3min left Michigan would tie 29-29. On a 3rd-1 play Martinez ran for FD, but the refs did not immediately blow the whistle when his forward progress was stopped as he was not down on the ground and Michigan stripped the ball allowing them to kick the go-ahead FG with just 1:24. A poorly executed series by Nebraska followed and a 4th down pass was incomplete. Michigan outgained them 459-431 (5.7-7.2) and outrushed them 204-140 (4.9-4.4). Nebraska converted only 3-of-11 3rd downs (Michigan 40%). Michigan kicked FGs of 35, 21, 31 and 39 yards (4 FGs from the RZ).

TCU led 14-0 and 35-10 HT (Frogs scored on pick-six). Texas Tech couldn't get any closer than 38-17 in the 2nd H. 52-31 F. Texas Tech outgained them 558-498 (7.2-8.7). TCU outrushed them 394-214 (8.4-5.8). A lot of TT's empty yards came on 2nd H possessions; TT's 3 of their final 4 drives ended SOD at TC14, TC27 and TC34. In the 1st H TT was SOD at TC36.

Kent State jumped out 21-0 and 31-10 HT. Buffalo climbed back into it in the 3rd Q scoring 21 unanswered points to tie! 31-31! Kent kicked FG and Buffalo got TD to actually lead 38-34! UB's final 4 drives were 2 missed FGs and 2 INTs. Kent scored the final 2 TDs of the game to win 48-38. Kent outgained them 633-549 (7.8-5.5), but Buffalo outrushed them 312-226 (5.8-5.0). Kent was called for 10 penalties for 105y. UB converted just 5-of-17 3rd down, but went 4-of-5 4th down. Crum 22-36-407-3-0, 72y rushing 2TDs. Kent WR Cephas caught 13-186-3TD. Vantrease 24-45-237-1-2. McDuffie and Marks each rushed over 80y.

Troy led 24-3 early 3rd Q as Georgia Southern failed to gain a FD on 6 of their first 8 drives! But Troy wasn't great either with 4 straight 3-and-outs in the 2nd H and Georgia Southern would come back to tie 24-24! Georgia Southern had the ball with 4:17 left ,but threw a first down INT at their own 46. Aided by a PI call, Troy would move it down for a 24y FG and the 27-24 win. Troy outgained them 409-301 (6.4-4.6). Georgia Southern, I thought, was an option based team, they gained just 82y rushing (2.2) and passed for 219. These teams need to work on their 3rd down plays. Troy converted just 1-of-11 and GaSo converted just 3-of-15! They also need to work on their RZ offense, on a combined 6 trips, the two teams kicked 4 FGs.

UTEP led 7-0, USM would tie, but UTEP would lead 26-7 before USM scored a late TD 26-13. UTEP outgained them 392-254 (7.0-4.0) and outrushed them 265-15 (6.8-.5). 75 of USM's yards were on the final drive. Five of their possessions had negative yardage. UTEP D 5 sacks and 14 TFLs. USM was called for 13 penalties. Each team only converted 4-of-13 3rd down.

Notre Dame’s O got off to a slow start with Jack Coan at QB, he was sacked twice on 3rd down and ND opened with 3 punts. VT was able to drive for TD and kick FG from the ND01 to lead 10-0. ND put in Buchner who led them down for TD mid 2nd Q. 10-7. After several punts, ND got a 3rd down conversion by way of penalty and ND would take a 14-10 HT lead with just :28 left. VT would get completions of 10, 23 and 13y to move into FG range and made a 52y as time expired. 14-13. VT kicked their second FG from inside the ND10 yard line to go up 16-14. Mid 3rd Q VT threw INT setting ND up on short field which they converted into a 21-16 lead. Burmeister was knocked out of the game. With Buchner still leading ND O, he threw a 26y pick-six and Hokies retook a 22-21 lead (2pt no good). Buchner threw another INT mid 4th Q. VT’s backup QB was injured and Burmeister had to come back into the game mid-drive and he led VT to a TD and extend lead 29-21. With just 4min left Jack Coan came back into the game. VT committed their second targeting penalty of the 2nd H and Coan would take them on for a TD, 2pt good for the tie 29-29! VT had to punt on 4th-1 2min left. Coan moved ND into position for 48y FG and the win 32-29! ND did outgain them 401-321 (5.8-4.5) and outrush them 180-134 (4.2-3.6). Each team lost 2 turnovers. ND just 3-of-12 3rd down, VT 8-of-17. ND got 4 TDs on 4 RZ trips. VT kicked two RZ FGs and only got 2 TDs on 4 trips.

UTSA – WKU was back-and-forth early until UTSA went up by 2 scores in the 2nd H and would never trail again winning 52-46. The teams traded an INT for a fumble on successive possessions in the 1st H. The only other turnover of the game sealed the win for UTSA as WKU was INT’d at the 5 yard line in the final minute of the 6 point game. UTSA punted just 3x, WKU punted twice and was SOD once near midfiled. UTSA did kick one FG from inside the 20, WKU had to settle for 2 FGs in the RZ and also missed a longer FG. They combined for 67 FDs! WKU outgained them 670-564 (7.5-7.4), both teams rushed equally well, 5.2 and 5.1 ypc. UTSA was just 3-of-11 3rd down but converted 3-for-3 4th down. WKU was 9-of-16 3rd and 0-for-1 4th down. Harris 28-38-349-6-1 (Harris also caught TD on trick play). Zappe 38-60-523-5-1.

Wyoming O struggled most of the night, with three 3-and-out punts and a 3 play/fumble possession to start the game. Air Force jumped out 14-0, then WYO D clamped down AF O long enough for Poke O to put together TD drives (help from 74y run) to tie 14-14 HT. AF did not attempt a pass in the 1st H, but would complete 7-of-10 for 110y in the 2nd H, while WYO O couldn’t get it going being held to just 82y in the 2nd H. AF would win 24-14 with a 321-257 TY edge (4.3-4.7). WYO did limit AF run game to 3.3ypc (211RY), but WYO was held to just 114RY (4.2, WYO had one run of 74y, 26 other runs for 40y) and Chambers couldn’t pick up the slack – he went 11-28-143-1-0, sacked 4x.

Utah beat USC in LA for the first time since 1916 and first win in the Coliseum (although just 8 games in that span). They exchanged the lead a couple times in the 1st H. Late in the 2nd Q Utah had a 4th-1 at the SC37 with just :17 left. Utah was going for it but Utah coaches realized they were not lined up correctly. After calling timeout, QB Rising had misread his wristband and was going to run a flea-flicker pass, which was not the call. After discussion, Whittingham said go with it and they got a 37y TD pass out of it to take a 21-10 lead into the break. USC has continually struggled in the RZ this season and twice had to settle for FGs from the Utah11 and 16 yard lines, which they made 1 and missed 1 in the half. Utah extended the lead to 35-10 in the 3rd Q. 42-26 F. USC just barely outgained them 493-486 (6.3-7.7). 150 of USC’s yards were on their final two TD drives of the game after it was out of reach. Utah outrushed them 180-92 (5.1-3.7).

Dorian Thompson-Robinson completed just 1-of-8 passes in the 1st H for 3 yards with a TD and an INT! Crazy! Arizona took their first two possessions for FGs and their 3rd was SOD at the UCL28. UCLA led 14-6 2nd Q when Arizona got a trick play TD to make it 14-13 HT. UCLA only outgained them 168-150 HT. UCLA got a 73y KO ret to open the 3rd Q, but settled for a 23y FG. Arizona drove for FG, but that was all the scoring they could muster. Zona QB McCloud was injured early 4th Q, Arz lost 2 fumbles in the 4th and Bruins would win 34-16. DTR finished 8-19-82-1-1, ran for 28y and 2TDs. McCloud 21-30-182-0-0, 21y rushing. UCLA outgained them 411-362 (6.2-4.5) thanks to 329RY (7.0) – Brown and Charbonnet each over 100y. Arz only ran for 122 (2.9). Arz was in the RZ 4x and got just 1 TD (UCLA scored TDs on 3 of 4 RZ chances).

Thanks for posting, s--k. Good work, as always

Guess I'm going to have to start paying attention to UTEP. They are respectable again

They are. I have hopped off their last two games after betting every one of their first 4 games in various ways. I did play ODU 2nd H vs them which was good. So I paid a good amount of attention to them. I didn't know quite what to do last week. I thought SMiss D might be good enough to limit them but SMiss was on their 3rd or 4th QB this year and a tr Fr so I stayed away.

The challenge for them is going to be vs the better offenses and defenses. Like the Boise game, UTEP was pretty competitive early, but they played conservative with FGs and punting and their D couldn't hold up since the O was turning it over like it was cool. When UTEP plays more experienced and athletic Ds and playmaking Os I expect UTEP to struggle. LaTech road fav at the Sun Bowl must reflect this sentiment.

I played their win total over simply because of the early schdule, which has now concluded. It will be a test for UTEP to see how they stack up vs a team that is actually kind of good because wins vs NMSt, BCookman, NMex, ODU and USM are all pretty unimpressive wins and largely expected and they in fact had moments of unimpressive play in all of them. USM was their most dominating win since week 0. LaTech could be interesting just because of a jekyll and hyde nature of LaTech's team.

Memphis outgained Tulsa 614-417 (6.2-6.2) but trailed by 8-14 pts throughout a good bit of the 2nd H and lost 29-35. Memphis moved the ball well early, but missed 2 FGs and threw INT. 152y of O on their first 3 drives and zero points. In the 2nd H Memphis would be SOD at T11, missed a third FG and fumbled at own 20 (Tulsa 5p 20y TD “drive”). -3 turnovers and 3 missed FGs. Memphis tried catching up, but they were unable to stop Tulsa in the 4th Q. The teams combined for 30 4th Q pts.

San Diego State won 31-6 and outgained New Mexico 336-193 (4.9-3.2). SD St led 17-0 when NM was on their best and only worthwhile drive of the game. For a brief 3 minutes and 12 seconds, NM actually looked like a real offense and they moved it 7p 73y to the SD09, but threw INT in the EZ. NM’s only points were via a fumble ret TD in the 3rd Q. SD St did go 3-and-out punt 4x and had a 4p 8y possession SOD after recovering a fumble. Just SD St O doing what SD St O does. Aztec ran 43-203 (4.7). Every time they passed they did Lobos a favor. Brookshire returned to start 11-24-130-0-0. He did run 45y and 2 TDs.

New Mexico State scored first, but Nevada would lead 52-7 into the 4th Q. NM St would outscore them 21-3 in the 4th, with their final TD coming with just :06 left on a QB draw with nobody on the Nevada DL acting like they were trying. Nevada “only” outgained them 532-452 (7.7-5.0) thanks to the NM St’s final 4 possessions of the game that gained 234y after Nevada had put their O to bed. Aggie QB Johnson 38-62-425-3-0 (sacked 6x). Carson Strong 25-32-377-6-1. Nevada only ran for 69y on 23 att (3.0).

It is rare I actually get to every single game. Guess that is one good thing about so many byes last week.

Week 5 - NA
Week 4 - partial Week 4 Recaps
Week 3 - Week 3 Recaps
Week 2 - Some really short recaps week 2
