Atlanta Falcons vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
Sunday, October 1, 2023 at Wembley Stadium in London

Importance of Jacksonville's Run Defense

It is critical to consider the quality of Jacksonville's run defense because Atlanta loves to run the ball.

The Falcons own the seventh-highest run-play percentage.

They like to feature two different running backs, Tyler Allgeier and Bijan Robinson.

Their quarterback, Desmond Ridder, is also a capable runner -- he accrued 39 rushing yards in Week 2 against Green Bay.

Atlanta had to pass more often last week because they were down a lot against a Detroit team that has been stout against opposing running backs.

When the Falcons can't run the ball well, then their offense will struggle.

Jacksonville's Run Defense

Atlanta's offense will thrive on Sunday because it will be able to run the ball well.

While the fact that Jacksonville's run defense ranks highly may suggest the contrary, one has to realize that it is only Week 3 and statistics at this point in the season are easily misrepresentative.

In Week 1, Jacksonville got to face a Colts rushing attack that missed both Jonathan Taylor and Zack Moss. Indianapolis was so bad with Deon Jackson that they released him.

Last week, the Jaguars got to face a Houston rush attack that, after exceeding its regular season rushing average, still ranks 28th.

Jacksonville's run defense merits pessimism because of its performances against the opponent's top running back.

For the Chiefs in Week 2, Isiah Pacheco ran for 70 yards on 5.8 YPC, although he averaged 4.1 YPC against the lowly Bears and 2.9 YPC against the Lions.

Last week, Devin Singletary for Houston ran for 41 yards on 4.6 YPC, far exceeding his efficiency in his games against Indianapolis and Baltimore.

Atlanta's Rush Attack

While Allgeier is strong and tough to bring down in his own right, Robinson will be the toughest running back that Jacksonville has seen thus far.

Fast and hard to tackle, Robinson boasts the fifth-highest number of yards per touch.

Ridder will be effective, too, against a Jaguars defense that, last year, repeatedly allowed mobile and less mobile running backs to achieve strong rushing performances.

This year, the Jaguars already allowed Anthony Richarson to run for 40 yards in his first NFL game for the Colts.

Of course, Jacksonville's defense clearly looks vulnerable on film -- Ridder through the air can take advantage of what Houston quarterback CJ Stroud saw en route to his team's 37-17 win last week over the Jags.

Trevor Lawrence vs. Falcons Pass Defense

I have always opposed the hype surrounding Jacksonville quarterback Trevor Lawrence because he constantly struggles to put up decent numbers against stronger pass defenses.

These struggles were apparent even during Jacksonville's late-season run last year, and they continue to be evident.

While his 84.5 season passer rating is anyhow awful, he was especially bad against Kansas City's stingy secondary.

Atlanta, the eighth-best team so far at limiting opposing passer rating, poses another tough test.

The Falcons have been especially hard on wide receivers, which is worrisome for Lawrence given the extent to which he's relied on Calvin Ridley and

Christian Kirk downfield.

It's going to be hard for Lawrence to move the ball downfield on Sunday.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. New Orleans Saints
Sunday, October 1, 2023 at 1 p.m. ET at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans

Defense Travels

Tampa Bay is the underdog in this game because it is the road team, yet its defense showed up in the Bucs' one away game.

In Week 1, the Bucs held weapon-laden Minnesota to 17 points.

New Orleans' Pass Protection Issues

The Saints' offense suffers from a difficulty that Minnesota's did not: pass protection.

New Orleans' offensive line features struggling performers, injuries -- specifically center Cesar Ruiz incurred a concussion -- and moving parts that disrupt chemistry and amount to guys playing in positions in which they are less comfortable.

The results so far include an injured starting quarterback in Derek Carr who might not be fit to play and an offensive line that ranks 26th at limiting its sack rate.

Tampa Bay enters this game with one of the better pass rushes, comparable in ranking to the Packers team that just benefited from facing New Orleans.

Scoring will continue to be difficult for the Saints, who have yet to exceed 20 points in a game, as they continue to struggle in pass protection.

Tampa Bay's Pass Protection

Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield will have more time to throw than his Saints counterpart because, ranking sixth at limiting its sacks allowed, his offensive line is significantly stronger in pass protection.

More time for a quarterback to throw means more time for his wide receivers to get open.

The Bucs feature an excellent duo in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, the fact that it's a duo being important because the Saints only have one very good cornerback, Marshon Lattimore.

With a more well-rounded offense, underdog Tampa Bay will have an easier time scoring.

Best Bet: Buccaneers +3 at +100 with Bet365 & Buccaneers ML at +150 with Bet365

Cincinnati Bengals vs. Tennessee Titans
Sunday, October 1, 2023 at 1 p.m. ET at Nissan Stadium in Nashville

Cincinnati's Run Defense

Don't let the last performance of Cincinnati's defense, against the Rams, obscure the struggles of its run defense.

Rams' head coach Sean McVay is notorious for abandoning the run.

On Monday against Cincinnati, despite being down two starting offensive linemen, his team achieved 5.1 YPC but only ran 13 times.

Defensively, the Bengals have been punished by teams determined to run.

In Week 2, the Ravens, despite missing their top running back, ran for 178 yards against Cincinnati.

Cleveland, in Week 1, amassed 206 rushing yards against the Bengals.

Tennessee's Rush Attack

Tennessee's outlook on offense is strong because it resembles Cleveland and Baltimore in their determination to run the ball.

Being down late against New Orleans and falling behind early to Cleveland have deflated Tennessee's run-play percentage, but in their Week 2 victory over the Chargers the Titans ran ten more times than they passed.

They boast one of the NFL's best running backs in Derrick Henry plus a playmaker in Tyjae Spears who has complemented him effectively, as evident when he ran for 49 yards against the Chargers, averaged nine YPC in Week 1 in New Orleans, and operated throughout the season as a reliable pass-catcher.

Passing Game Comparison

Titan quarterback Ryan Tannehill's best game came against the Chargers -- his passer rating was 123.3 -- because he plays best when he doesn't have to be the focal point of the offense.

With his offense centering around its two running backs, Tannehill will outperform Cincinnati's quarterback Joe Burrow.

Burrow is a shell of himself because a calf injury is impairing his mobility.

This season, his passer rating is 66.2 and he's averaging 4.7 yards per pass attempt.

The fact that Burrow is a drastically weaker version of himself is decisive because pass defense has been the most vulnerable component of Tennessee's defense.

Titans' Run Defense

Cincinnati running back Joe Mixon's productivity and efficiency have been critical in helping Burrow lead his offense downfield, although the Bengals still rank 28th in averaging 15.3 points per game.

Mixon, though, will struggle this week against a Titans run defense that continues to be one of the NFL's very best.

The Titans' defense is healthy this year and boasts a mean front seven that includes Jeffery Simmons and Denico Autry, who are also consistently effective pass rushers, and Harold Landry III.

Cincinnati is favored, yet its offense will struggle mightily to score.

Best Bet: Titans +2.5 at -110 with Bet365 & Titans ML at +115 with Bet365

Only thing about the Saints game…Jameis I don’t think has started a game vs his former team in the Dome. Be really interesting to see how the team plays around him.

„Ridder will be effective, too, against a Jaguars defense that, last year, repeatedly allowed mobile and less mobile running backs to achieve strong rushing performances.“

I hope it’s obvious that I meant quarterbacks

Nice write ups. I think there is one key factor in the Titans analysis that you didn’t address - Titans pass D. It's atrocious. They gave up 305 to Carr (96.1 QBR) and Herbert (104.2) and then made Watson (123.4) look like an MVP, which is a difficult task (up til now). This might be the game Burrow and Chase get real right

What has jags record been in the games across the pond? I feel like they should have a edge as they do this every year, think owner wants to move here, and should have the logistics down to a tee, the best way to go about it for players to have most success!

I don’t know any the numbers but I strongly disagree w any calling falcons pass d good. It could be cause they faced a midget rookie in his 1st game, love missing several key pieces, and last week despite his best 2 wrs being banged up Goff still had a very nice game., I honestly think this a perfect spot for Lawrence and co to get right, I saw lions te running wide open all over the place, engram is capable of a big game, I saw a slot guy open a lot, enter zay Jones or Kirk, amd I saw lions #1 wr battling turf toe getting 100+, welcome back mr Ridley who I think has little extra juice vs the team who dumped him!!

Far as falcons rush attack I think it gonna start running into problems vs even below average rush d’s, the more film teams get the more they gonna understand you can sell out to stop the run as Ridder proves week after week to be a somehow crappier version of Ryan tannenhill! No dc in the league is gonna respect falcons passing game and they gonna start loading up the Box imo. I guess it might not happen since we have so many dumb shit coaches who have no business having jobs , let’s just say any DC who is actually worth his pay check will be making it tough for this team to run the ball! I’d put everyone in the box!! I exaggerate but I would have every one my defenders within 7-8 yards the Los!! Take away the run game and falcons have no chance to move the ball!! Mediocre run defenses should be figuring this out sooner than later!

I’m gonna have to decide if you giving Ridder way more credit than I think he deserves or maybe I’m not understanding how bad jags d is?

Let’s try this, in general what you think of Ridder?

I think at best he a crappy version of Tannenhill and you prob know how little I think of tannehill!!

I don‘t think much of Ridder. I think comparing him to Tanny is a bit apples and oranges because they rely somewhat on different skill sets. I think this is a good matchup for Ridder tho.

Jags D is hard to pin down… two good performances then blasted by Texans. It looks to me like run defense has been a consistent worry that an opposing offense has yet to exploit and I generally like mobile quarterbacks vs Jax

This game gives me horrible flashbacks of a playoff game I lost a ton of money on backing titans!!! At that time I didn’t believe it was possible for a offensive line as terrible as that line burrow drug to the SB to win playoff games! Imo that was the worst offensive line to ever get to a SB!! That was the year I learned burrow was really really special!! I think titans sacked him 7-8x in that game! Baffling to me Tannenhill is still this teams qb as he was In fine form throwing 3 ints in that game! Not sure I recall ever seeing a game where the losing teams dline absolutely dominated the game in that manner!!

Im with you, titans secondary is very bad, I believe they still have a very good pass rushing front tho and while Cincy oline isn’t as atrocious it was that season it still isn’t very good!! Burrow isn’t and prob won’t be 100% anytime soon, I think we saw on Monday night he fine throwing in pocket but he doesn’t have the mobility we used to seeing. So that really gonna be the key. Can titans get to him before he gets the ball to his playmakers? I don’t like bengals HC Zach Taylor but I will give him credit for his game plan Monday night moving chase all over and getting him good matchups in space he could win quickly was some the better game planning I’ve ever seen from him! The offense shoulda looked even better if wasn’t for higgens forgetting how to catch in that game!! That said burrow still got planted several times by Donald and while he in a league his own titans have a few interior guys and play games up front I have no doubt will get them some hits on Burrow.

I trust burrow and co to get into the 20s, not sure tannenhill can sniff that, not if cincy plays d like they did Monday night!

What you think different bout Ridder/tannehill? Both can make plays with legs and both suck when asked to be a real qb.

What bout the jags in london thing? (Or wherever in Europe they playing). Sure seems to me this should be a huge advantage to them, I dunno if it shows up in record cause until last year this been mostly a crappy team but seem to recall even bad jags teams being more competitive than expected across the pond. Unless all the teams have figured this trip out which I kinda doubt if jags don’t have this game down Pat far as scheduling and everything that comes with this game somebody should be fired, they should know all the tricks/tips to get optimum performances out their guys in this game!

Rams really never tried running the ball Monday night did they? I found that little odd, I know Mcvey likes to throw but for most part he likes having a run game, not like game script was forcing him to throw till late in 4th. Pretty sure it was still a one score game when cincy dc started dialing all kinds of shit up to tee off on Stafford!! Not only the lack of run game but i was scratching my head they seemed to be looking deep every throw, nothing short, no screens despite the fact cincy was clearing coming after the qb on every snap! I found it very odd cause Mcvey is usually one the few guys I’m not roasting for terrible game plans/play calling!!

Isn‘t Ridder more mobile and dangerous with his legs?

That’s a valid concern. I remember some opponents no-showing vs Jax like Baltimore.

i thought i recall for example last year it being a big thing that McVay doesn’t know run enough

it’s really not even about anything for me more than why I bet lions last week, obviously lions run d made me more confident the game get out on Ridder, but ultimately I just don’t think falcons can or will have a winning record with Ridder playing qb, imo he not a starting nfl qb.

1 at a time in order.

Tannehill was recruited and started his ncaa career as a wr, I would bet money Ridder is not more dangerous than him as a runner, maybe at this point? I havnt watched tannehill this year but at one time his legs were his best attribute.

Yea I seem to remember several teams that were clearly better than jags having issues in this game. I dunno if it was the travel/logistics or just better teams treating it like a vacation and not respecting jags? No way to know that, obviously I wouldn’t expect the latter from atl. I do recall one or 2 times thinking how dumb it seemed when a team would show up for that game like the night before!!

I don’t think I take much of anything from last year rams, I know when he took Goff to a Super Bowl his offensive foundation very much had a strong run game and throwing off of that.

If you recall the SB rams in that playoff game vs bucs Mcvey continued trying to run w Akers and that fucker kept fumbling! For most part I believe Mcvey wants a strong run game as part the foundation to his offense. He loves throwing/taking shots of of that, eventually those don’t work if nobody thinks you gonna run the ball! Lol

I don‘t deny that he‘s showed that he values running as part of his offense, i‘m just saying that more than most coaches he tends to abandon the run.
