Goodbye to Romance College Football
Pitt accumulated school record 707 TY scoring scoring 77 points in the process, the most since 1926. New Hampshire was a top 25 FCS team.

Penn State and Villanova was a game between unbeatens. Sean Cliffored passed for a personal best 401 yards. Villanova was ranked 11 FCS. Penn State led 38-3 early 4th Q before 'Nova got a couple late TDs. Prior to their final two drives for scores, 'Nova was only able to cross midfield on 2 of their first 10 drives. Curiously, Penn State still struggled to run the ball, leading RB rusher avg'd just 4.1ypc and as a team they averaged just 2.4ypc. 'Nova had 8 TFL. Penn St also only converted 3-of-12 3rd downs.

Minnesota goes from a dominating 30-0 win at Colorado to an embarrassing home loss to Bowling Green. BG actually never drove into Minnesota territory the entire 1st H on 7 possessions. But Minnesota gave them the ball at the M24 when Fleck choose to go for a 4th-and-1 deep in his own territory mid 2nd Q and Potts was stopped for a 5y loss. 4 plays later BG led 7-3. If we remember, Minnesota went for a 4th-and-1 at their own 29 vs Ohio State, which resulted in a big run and sparked Minn to a 1st H lead vs the Buckeyes. Not so much here. BG loaded up to stop the run and Min couldn't pass, failures in every facet of the passing game. Morgan finished 5-13-59-0-2. Gophers had possessions in BG territory end in 36y FG, Morgan fumble at BG43 after 18y run, got a 54y run to the B37, but would only gain 4 more yards and missed a 52y FG. BG took that possession and regained a 14-10 lead late 3rd Q (converted 4th-and-1 along the way). Min's final 4 possessions didn't cross midfield, the last two ended in back-to-back INTs. FDs were even at 12. Min had a 182-22 RY (4.0-.9), but only outgained them 241-192 (4.2-3.1). Min lost 3 turnovers, BG lost 2. Each D got 4 sacks. BG just 2-of-14 3rd down, Min 5-of-14. Min WR Autman-Bell played one series then appeared injured walking on the sideline. QB McDonald ran for both of BG's TDs, he was sacked 4x so it doesn't show in the stats, but he had some key runs on BG's drives.

Virginia Tech only outgained Richmond 318-237 (5.1-4.0) in the 21-10 win, and VT O accounted for just 14 points as they had a 60y punt return score. Richmond's QB was injured in the 1st Q and did not return. Richmond only really had one or two decent drives in the game, their TD was set up off a 16y "drive" following an INT deep in VT territory.

Wagner scored first, Temple scored the next 41 to win 41-7. Mathis returned for Temple 22-32-292-2-0. Temple outgained them 407-159 (6.6-2.8) ,but only rushed 115 (4.0).

Army is 4-0 for the first time since 1996. MiamiO struggled to keep drives alive (2-of-11 3rd down) while Army QB Anderson ripped 72 and 75y TD runs and rushed for 236y before injury. Miami did kick FG from the A11 and were SOD at the A01. Predictably, Army took that one 18p 99y in a classic 10min 51sec Army TD drive to lead 23-3. MiaO got an 80y TD pass early 4th, it went final there at 23-10 after Army's final two drives killed 10 minutes.

Notre Dame - Wisconsin were locked in a tight one, with ties of 3-3 and 10-10. ND had missed a FG and UW was SOD at the N21. Coan had been knocked out of the game two possessions before UW got a 3rd Q sack/fumble and recovery at the N39, Badgers drove for 1st-goal but had to settle for 27y FG to lead 13-10. ND returned the ensuing KO 96y for TD and it was lights out. UW went 3-and-out after a sack on 3rd down, ND went up 24-13, UW missed a long FG, then Mertz threw INT with long return set up ND on a short field resulting in 37y FG...27-13 UW, then ND got back-to-back pick-sixes! 41-13 F. ND scored 31 4th Q points to UW's 3, but UW actually outgained them 110-60 in the quarter! For the game UW would outgain them 314-242 (4.6-3.5), but threw a total of 4 INTs and lost a fumble (led to 31 ND pts). ND lost 1 turnover (led to 3 UW points). UW converted just 1-of-14 3rd downs! ND was 5-of-16. Badger D did get 12 TFL and 6 sacks!

Mississippi State turned it over on 2 of their first 3 drives both in LSU territory. LSU took the first for a TD (had to convert 4th-and-1 along the way). MSU had 1st-goal but had to settle for 23y FG...7-3. MSU D got INT, but would have to punt. 7-3 would be HT score. LSU got a 64y TD pass to open the 3rd Q...14-3. MSU drove down to the L21, but would have to settle for 33y FGA, which was missed. LSU later got a 58y TD pass to go up 21-3, but MSU would drive for TD just before end of 3rd Q. 21-10. MSU roughed the LSU punter and 3 plays later LSU would lead 28-10. MSU responded mid 4th Q...28-17 and they forced an LSU 3-and-out, 5 minutes later it was 28-25 (2pt good) under 2min to go. MSU's onside kick did not go 10 yards and MSU only had 1 timeout, LSU took knees. MSU scored 15 4th Q points. LSU's TDs were 11y pass, 64y pass, 58y pass, 41y pass. Due the big plays and to MSU's the early drives resulting in turnovers, MSU did have a 29-15 FD edge. MSU outrushed them 115-63 (4.4-2.3) and outgained them overall 486-343 (5.5-6.4). MSU did convert 12-of-18 3rd down to LSUs 5-of-13. LSU D forced MSU to kick 2 RZ FGs.

Missouri had leads of 7-0, 14-7 and 17-14 in the 1st H. But Boston College would have leads of 24-17, 27-17, 27-24, 34-31 in the 2nd H. Both teams kicked a RZ FG. Both teams only punted twice all game. Both teams converted 3rd downs in the 60% range. Both teams threw an INT in regulation, however BC's led to no damage, Mizz's INT in regulation led to a BC FG and Tiger's second INT ended the game in OT. Mizz K made a career long 56y FG to force OT as time expired. In OT BC got TD pass, Mizz threw INT in EZ (thrown into double coverage on first down). BC ran for 275 (5.6). BC ran it so well, they rarely needed to pass, but choose to. BC went 3-and-out twice, those drives saw 2 incomplete passes each. Grosel 18-29-175-2-1, 35y rushing. Bazelak 30-41-303-1-2.

Georgia outgained Vanderbilt 532-77! Georgia nearly had more points, than Vandy had yards! 62-0. UGA led 35-0 after 1st Q! UGA passed for 291y and rushed for 241y. FDs were 28-4!

Defense optional for SMU-TCU. There were wide open receiver and big plays early and often. SMU 68y TD, TCU 20y TD run, SMU 46y run on way to a 14-7 lead. TCU got a 60y pass on way to tie 14-14. SMU threw INT, but TCU would miss FG. TCU got a 46y TD to lead 21-14. SMU tied on a 29y TD pass. 21-21. SMU was on a long drive to end the 1st H, faced a 4th-goal at the T02 and opted to go for it with :03 left, but threw INT in EZ...21-21. Seems like that would've mattered, but it didn't. Duggan was sacked/fumbled first play of the 3rd Q and SMU got a 2p 3y TD "drive" to lead 28-21 and they never looked back. SMU would lead 28-24, 35-24, TCU SOD, 35-27, 42-27, 42-34 with 4min left. TCU kicked off deep, but could not stop the Ponies. SMU outgained them 595-446 (7.4-7.7) and outrushed them 350-170 (6.7-5.7). SMU threw 3 INTs (led to TCU missed FG and made FG), TCU lost a fumble (that Duggan fumble at his own 3 yard line = SMU TD).

Texas led 14-0 and 42-14 scoring TDs on all 5 possessions with a pick-six. Teams traded INTs to open the 3rd Q then a big punt return set up Horns at TT07 and soon it was 49-14. Teams would quickly trade 4 TDs on the ensuing possessions with big plays for a 42 point 3rd Q! 49-21, 56-21, 56-28, 63-28. Each team scored 1 more TD in the 4th. Tex 639-520 (8.5-7.8), Tex rushed for 336 (6.5). Thompson 18-23-303-5-1, 29y net rushing with TD. B Robinson 18-137, 2rec-54-TD. TT QB Slough was injured and left game 1st H. Colombi 17-23-324-3-1.

Northwestern started Ryan Hilinski at QB. He went 12-20-88-0-0. Evan Hull rushed 22-220-2TD. NW was in the RZ 7x, but only scored 3 TDs, made 2-of-3 FGs and fumble. NW added two late TDs off short fields following Ohio SOD and INT. NW 461-348 TY (6.5-5.5). Was 35-0 before OU got a 55y TD run to end the game.

Central Michigan went to the bench late 3rd Q and back up QB Daniel Richardson led a comeback win. FIU led 14-3 late 2nd Q when a punt bounced off the ground and touched an FIU player at the F07 giving the Chips an easy TD and a 14-10 game HT. FIU again stretched their lead to DD with a 27-10 score. Enter Richardson. He led TD drive to start the 4th Q...27-17. CM D stiffened up. FIU went 3-and-out, Richardson led another TD mid 4th Q, FIU drove down to C12 with a FD, but had to settle for a 28y FG, which they missed! FIU D forced a punt, but Panther O went 3-and-out and had to give it right back, now 2min left. CM quickly and easily went 80y for the go-ahead TD...31-27 1:11 to go. FIU got as far as the C18, but 2 incompletions and an INT in the EZ ended the game. CM did have 599-437 TY edge (6.7-6.2). CM had 256y in the 1st H, but just 10pts as they were SOD at F25 and made and missed medium distance FGs. Each team lost 2 turnovers, none bigger than the touched punt before HT for FIU. Richardson entered for a struggling Sirmon and went 16-23-276-3-0 in just over 1 quarter of play. Lew 25-152 and CM had two 100y receivers. Bortenschlager had a career game 20-38-395-2-1 (was sacked 5x) and FIU had two receivers over 170y (career days for both Chambers and Singleton)! Price was limited 17-50-TD, 2rd-15y.

Utah State outgained Boise St 443-435 (6.1-5.4), but lost 27-3. Utah St's 1st H possessions ened in INT (Boise got FG), SOD, blk'd 41y FG, INT at the B01 and a missed 35y FG. Boise led 10-0 HT with Utah State gained 317y but zero points. Was still 10-0 when Utah St ran a called fake punt at their own 26 on 4th-10 which Boise sniffed out from the beginning. That led to an easy Boise TD and 17-0 lead and later Boise added a second short field TD following a fumble. Teams were a similar 35-40% on 3rd down. Utah St lost 3 turnovers plus the SOD deep in own territory. USU was also penalized 13x for 86y. Boise still can't run, Holani 13-46. Much of Boise's running success came from Bachmeier and WRs.

Miami freshman QBs combined to hit 22-25-417-5-0. Seven Miami players scored their first career points. Program record 739 total yards, 10.56ypp.

After showing some positive signs of life the last 2 weeks, UMass football was dominated at Coastal Carolina 53-3. Coastal scored on 8 of 9 possession, the one they didn’t score on their 9th was their final. CC finished with a 558-153 TY edge (8.0-2.8) with over 1/3 of UMass’ yards coming on their 4th Q FG drive. Coastal hasn’t allowed a passing TD all season.

Toledo continues to use a 2 QB system to try and inject life into their O. It produced two TDs vs Ball State as Carter Bradley hit a 69y TD pass and Dequan Finn ran a 70y TD on QB draw. 139 of Toledo’s 444 TY (6.9) were on those plays and were the only two Rocket TDs of the day. UT could only manage 2 FGs and collected a safety at the end of the game to win 22-12. UT’s D did a good job vs Ball St, limiting them to just 4 FGs (two from the RZ) holding them to 312 TY (4.4). Super WR Justin Hall led BSU in both receiving and rushing while becoming the school’s all-time leading receiver. Toledo ran for 272 (6.2).

Eastern Michigan jumped out 14-0 and led 28-7 before TxSt cut it to 28-14 HT. Texas State got as close as 28-21, then EM rattled off 31 straight pts. A week after losing 24 players to covid protocol, TxSt only got back 5 this week. EM’s 59 points are 7th most in program history. 7 different players scored for EM. TY 499-299 (6.3-4.8) with RY 242-112 (5.5-3.0). EM converted 11-of-15 3rd downs (TxSt 3-of-11).

Western Michigan D held San Jose St to just 119 TY (2.1) and sacked Spartan QBs 8 times. Nick Starkel was knocked out of the game on the 6th sack with a potentially significant arm/shoulder injury in the 2nd H. Starkel was only able to complete 6-14-55-0-1, his replacements faired no better going 3-12-4-0-0. WM led 20-3 HT and won 23-3. The teams combined to convert just 5-of-17 3rd downs! WM was 2-of-4 4th down including a 4th-and-16 conversion (17y pass) on their 1st Q TD drive and a 4th-and-4 conversion on a 37y TD pass. WM gained 347 TY (4.9). WM was SOD at SJ39 and SJ17 in the 2nd H. San Jose only had two drives get past the 50 all game.

Maine hung with Northern Illinois early with NIU leading just 21-14 HT, but would win 41-14. NIU did outgain them 574-290 (8.3-5.2). Teams combined for just 4-of-20 3rd downs though. Lombardi 17-24-282-1-1 and had 119y rushing thanks to a 64yarder. He ran for 3 TDs. NIU kicked FGs from the M09 and M08 in the 2nd H.

Utah’s 24-13 win wasn’t as comfortable as it might look. Utah led just 7-6 HT and capped the game with a 54y pick-six with under 2min to go. WSU had earlier converted a Utah fumble into a TD. Utah only outgained them 349-318 (6.2-4.2). There were two series in the 3rd/4th Q where Utah missed a FG from the W13 and fumbled on FD into the EZ for touchback. Ute D did register 8 sacks and 13 TFL! Guarantano started for WSU 25-36-248-1-3 (de Laura injured). Rising 13-23-137-0-0, rushed for 32y. Utah did rush for 212 (6.4).

I'll get some more later tonight.

Arkansas scored on their first 3 possessions of the game with big plays to lead 17-0. Texas A&M started slow but did get a FG before HT to make it 17-3. Spiller ripped a 67y run to make it 17-10 mid 3rd Q. Jefferson was knocked out of the game for a few series and did return mid 4th Q. A&M threw an INT and Ark was able to drive for 20-10 lead. After A&M was SOD, Arkansas ended the game at the T11. Ark outgained them 443-272 (6.5-4.6). Offensive penalties, missed blocks and sacks were a problem for Ags O (2 of 3 sacks occurred on 3rd down) while the D gave up too many big plays and tackled poorly in the 1st H. Penalties and penalty yards were nearly the same 11-75 and 10-65.

Iowa State outgained Baylor 479-282 (6.6-5.4). Baylor scored TDs on their first 3 possessions. ISU moved it well, but drives stalled at the B23, B30, B21 and B22 on successive drives resulting in 3 FGs and a missed FG. After Baylor’s fantastic start, they didn’t threaten much offensively with just one nice drive over the course of their next 5, but on that one they fumbled at the I23. The key was after ISU’s 3rd FG it was 21-16 in the 3rd Q when Baylor got a KO ret TD to make it 28-16 and then later got a 41y punt return that led to a FG (Baylor didn’t gain any yards on that possession). 10 points off special teams for Baylor in their 31-29 win. ISU outrushed them 216-123 (5.4-3.7). Both teams were a similar 35-36% 3rd down and they combined to convert 5-for-5 4th down. The one conversion ISU couldn’t make was a 2pt conversion that would’ve tied the game with just :24 left. Baylor recovered the onside kick.

Clemson was limited to just 5 FDs and 87 TY in the 1st H. Those yards came on their TD drive, otherwise Clemson went 3-and-out 4x, 4-and-out 1x and 2-and-out 1x (INT). North Carolina State moved it a little better, but punted on 4 of their 6 drives, but did get 10p 54y TD drive that was aided by two Clemson offside calls on 3rd down that made for easier conversions. Clemson also jumped offside on a 4th-and-3, but Leary was sacked/fumbled next play. The teams traded TOs in the 1st H, but neither led to points (NcSt missed 53y FG) 7-7 HT. Two more Tiger 3-and-outs to open the 3rd Q while NcSt moved it down field aided by 25y in Clemson penalties for a 14-7 lead! Bryan Bresee was injured on this drive in what turns out to be a torn ACL. Early in the 4th Q Uiagalelei ran for 37 to the NC05 and would tie it 14-14 11min to go. NcSt missed their second 50+y FG, but Clemson went 3-and-out and NcSt drove down to the C22 setting up a game winning FG. He missed his third FG of the night, this one a 39 yarder. In OT, Clemson threw TD on 3rd down, NcSt scored on 3rd down as well to tie again 21-21. In OT2, NcSt scored on TD pass (2pt failed) while Clemson’s possession ended with a run and 3 incompletions. 27-21 F. Despite the closeness on the scoreboard, NCSt outgained them 386-214 (4.0-4.4). Both teams were heavily penalized, NCSt 11-105, Clemson 13-94. NCSt held a 31-10 FD edge and Pack converted 11-of-21 3rd downs. Clemson converted just 2-of-11.

UConn drove 7p 45y to WY11 to open the game 3-0 and would actually score on 3 of their first 4 possessions of the game highlighted by a reverse-flea-flicker 42y TD pass to lead 13-0! WY punted from UC territory, missed FG and threw INT, kicked FG then went 3-and-out twice to close the 1st H....13-3 HT. Wyoming scored 3 TDs in the 2nd H (one a short field after INT). WYO also threw INT at UC09 that Huskies turned into a FG...24-16 late 4th. UC went on a 14p 64y drive that featured 3 D PI calls, one on 3rd-and-10 and two on 4th down that helped UConn score TD with :04, but their tying 2pt try was no good. Wyoming outgained them 352-281 (5.0-4.2) and outrushed them 203-110 (4.5-3.9). WYO did convert 9-of-15 3rd downs to UConn’s 3-of-13. Chambers struggled passing as he often does 15-26-149-1-2, 20y rushing. UConn QB Tyler Phommachanh played in his second ever college game 19-39-171-1-1. He ran for 60y vs Amry, but just 14 net yards this game. Tyler’s brother is the back up QB for Clemson.

Louisville scored on first 5 possessions and led 31-7 and 31-13 HT. FSU shut down the LV O in the 2nd H as the Cards just barely crossed midfield on only one of their drives. The hole was too big for FSU to get out of, FSU scored on a 75y run to open the 3rd Q, missed and made a FG and were SOD twice in LV territory. FSU outgained them 453-395 (6.0-4.9). LV was 50% 3rd down, FSU 31%, FSU was 0-for-4 4th down. LV D had 11 TFLs and 6 sacks. Milton played the whole game 24-39-248-1-1, –20net rush yards due to sacks.

Maryland led 24-9 HT. Kent St did have two TDs called back by holding, one a nicely executed fake FG. Terps led 37-16 before Kent scored early 4th Q. UM only outgained them 526-458 (7.6-5.7). And Kent outrushed them 150-142 (3.2-5.1). Both teams were called for a lot of penalties, but Terps were hit with more 9-120y. Kent went for five 4th downs and converted just 1. UM D got 5 sacks and 11 TFL.

UTSA won with their largest comeback in school history. Memphis fell on a bad snap in EZ for their first TD and UTSA went 3-and-out twice and Memphis jumped out 21-0. UTSA won 23-21 with a time expiring FG! UTSA D stepped up limiting the Tiger O the rest of the 1st H and UTSA cut the score to 21-7 HT. Memphis missed a FG and UTSA made it 21-14, but Memphis responded...28-14. UTSA answered 28-21 and Memphis was sacked/fumbled at own 7 yard line and UTSA cashed that in to tie the game 28-28 early 4th Q. Memphis fumbled again, at the SA19, but UTSA was stuffed on 4th-and-1 at Mem45 under 5min left. Memphis appeared to have a big play down to the SA02, but it was brought back by holding and Memphis would eventually punt. UTSA took over at their own 28 2:46 left and they ran McCormick 7 of the 9 plays going down to set up the game winning 42y FG as time expired. McCormick ran 42x! for 184y and 3 TDs. Memphis just edged them in total yards 407-399 (7.1-4.3) and outrushed them 205-78 (3.3-2.4). UTSA converted 9-of-20 3rd down to Memphis’ 4-of-12.

Illinois and Purdue combined for 591 yards on 11 total punts and only 590 yards of offense. ILL ran 42x for 175 and had a 34-26 TOP edge. Purdue outgained them 315-275 (4.8-4.0). David Bell DNP.

Iowa gained 29y on their first two possessions, Colorado State was SOD at the I31. Iowa opened up the offense and got a 43y 2nd Q TD pass. CSU drove for a TD after a 22y Iowa punt. 7-7. Iowa again was looking to throw and moved it down to the C14 when Petras threw an INT which was ret’d 62y. CSU was able to take a 14-7 lead just :24 before HT. CSU fumbled at their own 6 yard line in the 3rd Q and 1 play later the game was tied 14-14. A good punt return set up Iowa in CSU territory and a PI then 27y TD pass later Iowa led 21-14 end of 3rd Q. Iowa added a FG and CSU never threatened much again. CSU’s final drive was SOD at their own 10 and Iowa rushed twice killing the final :54 ending game at C08. FDs were even at 12. Iowa outgained them 278-250 (5.1-3.2). The teams each punted for about 350 yards on 15 total punts - way more yards that the teams had in total offense! Iowa only ran for 54y (1.7) and Goodson finished with 57y net (3.2) which included a 27y run. Yeah it was that bad. CSU kept running into a brick wall as well, 48x for 95 (2.0). Difference was Iowa was able to turn to the passing game more effectively. Petras 15-23-224-2-1. CSU TE McBride was targeted 12 and only caught 6, all of which seemed like they were on 3rd down. CSU converted 9-of-13 3rd down in the 1st H, but would finish just 11-of-23 (2-of-10 2nd H). Iowa was 4-of-13.

I'll sneak a few more in here

Michigan built a 20-3 HT lead with a 233 to 122 TY edge. It was a different 2nd H as Michigan had 4 straight 3-and-outs while Rutgers battled back driving 91y for TD, kicking FG, 20-13, missed FG and SOD at M39. Michigan would miss a late FG. Rutger's final possession came with under 2min left, but fumbled and Michigan killed the clock. Michigan had just 42 yards in 2nd H. Rutgers finished with edges 21-15 FD, 196-112 (4.7-2.9) RY, 352-275 (4.9-5.1) TY. Rutgers had 3 drives SOD in UM territory. Rutgers 7-of-11 3rd down, Mich 4-of-11. Vedral 18-31-156-1-0. McNamara 9-16-163-0-0. Michigan did kick two RZ FGs. Rutgers made a RZ FG and missed a RZ FG. Michigan entered the game with the nation's best rushing O at 350.3, they were held to 1/3 of that.

Towson's 21 pts were as many as their prior two games combined! They had a couple drives were they moved it pretty well through the air. San Diego State didn't score until near the end of the 1st Q and would lead 21-14 HT. Aztecs led 48-14 before Towson scored a late TD for 48-21 F. SDSt 450-228 (6.2-4.1) with a 281-15 RY advantage (6.0-.8)

Kansas nearly got on the board first with what should've been a 82y pick-six but KU DB was tackled by Duke QB at the D17. KU got backed up by penalty then missed a FG. Durant put Duke up 7-0 with a 57y TD run. Kansas had a 45y pass down to the D23, but were sacked for big loss and made a 50y FG. 7-3. Then KU recovered a fumble at the D18 and would go up 10-7!
