Week 4 box score thread

Head of Alabama Department of Decision-Making
Please post observations from your box score research.

Going through briefly this morning:

SMU gave up 729 yards to James Madison? WTF?

Texas lost by 3 despite being outgained by 100 yards, 15 fewer first downs, and committed 16 penalties. OSU had 3 turnovers

Didn't see much of the game yet, but looks to me that Arkansas outplayed aTm (again) and still managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Hope to get more into these after my folks leave town and the kid goes down for a nap. Love to hear others chime in

NIU returned an interception 75 yards or so to the BC 4 for one score, and returned a kickoff for a td for the other score.

This is the most deceiving final score that I have found so far.

Charlotte and FAU combined for 12 turnovers.

FAU ran 48 times for 40 yards against Charlotte.
FAU ran 33 times for 223 against Miami Fl as you will recall ....

Cub has been downplaying Michigan all spring and summer...says there is no talent there so kinda is funny to be honest...

I won't post it ... but look at Army rush stats when you get a chance ... emu faces LSU next week .. ncaa single game rushing record in jeopardy if he plays the whole game

You don't understand. Ohio St and Michigan St are just in a lookahead spot to their game in November

One long-ass lookahead ;).

I am still in shock that two B1G ten teams remain at the top...both top 5-6 for sure but it just looks funny.

The media has already decided that this is the case. It's funny to hear them bash an SEC, Pac 12, or Big 12 team for looking less than stellar against below average teams, but tOSU and Mich St are getting a pass, as if it's some kind of good thing that they have a one game season. I'm starting to think that Michigan gets one of them

Totally agree.

I am just trying to figure out how the narrative totally flipped from the past 7-8 years from SEC this and that and Big Ten sucks yada yada...

Guess tO$U winning it last year has helped that.

When Mich St have been good the past few years they hae been underrated. Now they are overrated.

I wonder if an unbeaten Stanford or USC would be ranked at 10 after putting 60 on Oregon.

Thankfully, these idiots opinions help drive betting perceptions

Here's a few from our guy that reviews box scores for us.

Nevada 24, Buffalo 21
Last week Buffalo was on the lucky end of a bizarre game at Florida Atlantic. This week, they managed to lose at home despite winning total yardage 487-379, third down conversions 44% to 25%, and yards-per-play 6.3 to 6.0. A 3-0 turnover disadvantage proved too large to overcome. Don’t give Nevada too much credit for the win here. The Wolfpack was outplayed except in the TO department.

Michigan State 30, Central Michigan 10
Sparty was a 25-point favorite at home, yet got outgained 340-324, and only had relatively generic statistical advantages in other areas (5.9 to 5.2 in YPP, 181-55 in rushing yards) considering how easy this game was supposed to be. If you were only scoreboard watching, it looked like MSU just missed the mark by five points. It was much less impressive than that in the numbers an the eye test. When Oregon was crushed later in the day by Utah, it raised a lot of doubts about whether Michigan State is even a top 10 team…let alone a top TWO team.

Duke 34, Georgia Tech 20
This was closer than the score made it seem…and a much less offensively dynamic. Duke had a kickoff return touchdown, and another 1-yard TD drive off a long kickoff. Take those away and it’s a 20-20 tie. Georgia Tech won yardage 316-279 (very low for a projected shootout). Duke won YPP 4.6 to 3.9. This was basically a 16-13 type game that blew up because of special teams play and cheap points off five combined turnovers. Be cautious with Duke in particular here because that 34-point total greatly misrepresents how the offense played.

Florida Atlantic 17, Charlotte 7
Don’t know if I’ve ever seen a game where BOTH teams could only manage 2.5 yards-per-play on offense. And, they did that while combining to go 8 of 34 on third downs, 0 of 5 on fourth downs, and committing 12 turnovers. Was this the worst game EVER PLAYED?! Loser Charlotte won total yardage 206-184. Florida Atlantic stole a win thanks to a 7-5 (!!) turnover advantage. So, a 10-point road favorite only gained 184 yards while losing the ball five times, but still pushed because their opponent was even more catastrophic.

Boston College 17, Northern Illinois 14
This was a tough schedule spot for Northern Illinois after the huge effort at Ohio State the prior week. They played like little was in the tank but hung close anyway. Boston College won total yardage 326-153, rushing yardage 234-71, and yards-per-play 4.2 to 2.7. Northern only reached the end zone because of a kickoff return TD and a 4-yard scoring drive. More like a 17-3 type game. BC’s got a great defense this year but a horrible offense.

Utah 62, Oregon 20…USC 42, Arizona State 14…and UCLA 56, Arizona 23
All three of these high profile Pac 12 showdowns saw misleadingly large victory margins…so let’s just throw them all in one group. Funny…the home teams scoring 57 were actually a net favorite over the road teams scoring 160! The right teams won…and exposed badly overrated pretenders from the states of Oregon and Arizona. But, the winners were aided in running up huge point totals by a 10-2 turnover advantage and some cheap points set up by kick returns. Just a reality check that the losers aren’t really 4-5-6 touchdowns worse than the winners on their home fields. Rematches would regress to something more sane.

Bingo on all counts.

SMiss was error prone early. Moved the ball a bit in the 1st qrt, but fumbled and missed a FG, then the O couldn't do anything in the 2nd qrt (1 first down). All while Nebraska was moving it at will. Nebraska had 327 yards in the first half to SMiss' 119!

Nebraska scored every possession in the first half, the saving grace for SMiss is that 5 of those 6 drives ended in FGs for the 22-0 halftime lead. Huskers kicked FGs from the 12, 10, 23, 5 and 33 yard lines (the last one as time expired in the half).

In the 4th qrt after Indiana went up by 21 on a pick 6 Wake Forest got 177 of their 363 total yards and 9 of their 25 FDs (they were also 3 of 4 on 4th down). This was on their 3 final drives which included an onside kick recovery.

CJ Bethard completed his first 15 passes (finished 18 of 21 for 278 and 2TD 0 INT).

MTSU did miss the would-be game winning FG with :08 left, but ILL also missed a FG in the game and failed on a 4th down pass at the MT 4 in the 3rd qrt. ILL entered 4th qrt with a 24-12 lead. ILL's first TD of the game was a blk'd punt.

By the way...what was up with that Toledo line crashing to 4 prior to kickoff? Neither Hunt nor Knighton played.

Akron did out gain ULL 458-285, however Zips only had about a dozen yardage edge at halftime.

In the 2nd qrt Akron missed a FG and ULL was SOD at the 1 following a 14 play, 93y drive (game was 14-7 Akron at that point).

ULL's O was nonexistent in the 3rd qrt while Akron tacked on 2 more TDs. Akron's final TD was a 21y drive set up by a ULL fumble in the 4th.

Cal only wins by 6? With 13 more FDs, double the TOP, 222 more yards and a significant 3rd down conversion advantage?

First drive failed 4th down att at UW 35. Next drive had 1st down at the 14, but had to kick a FG from the 15 four plays later. Early 2nd qrt Cal went for a 4th and goal at the 1 and failed (led 10-7 at this point). In the 3rd, after an 11p 46y drive Cal fumbles and UW runs it 70y for a TD (potential 10 or 14 pt swing, score is 27-14 now). In the 4th qrt after having a first down at the UW 12, Cal later kicks a FG from the 20.

3 of Washington’s first 4 drives actually totaled –15 yards (the other one was a 71y TD drive). For the game UW had 5 drives that resulted in negative yards (not counting the halftime kneel down which would mean 6).
