Florida Panthers vs. Utah Mammoth

Utah looked like it had overcome its losing ways when it collected two consecutive big wins. Then, however, Utah lost its leading goal-scorer, center Logan Cooley, to injury. Since losing Cooley, the Mammoth have lost to Calgary by two goals and to Los Angeles by two goals. Cooley’s injury provides a further obstacle to a team that was already struggling to score goals. Since Utah was 8-2, it has suffered twice as many losses as wins largely because of its repeated failure to score more than a couple goals. Florida has one of the better goal-scoring defenses, so this is not a team against which Utah can expect to turn things around without Cooley.

Whereas the Mammoth are down a key player, Florida has welcomed back valued center Eetu Luostarinen. His passing and vision explain his tendency to get assists and are profoundly useful to Florida’s offensive attack. Since his return, the Panthers are 2-0 and have scored eleven goals. Into tonight's matchup, they carry too much firepower for the Mammoth to handle. Therefore, wager on Florida ML.

Los Angeles Kings vs. Seattle Kraken

The Kings are favored way too heavily in this game, especially when you consider that it takes place in Seattle. Any attempt to justify a wager on the Kings has to be moved entirely by recency bias. Their last two games have been great, for sure, but we can’t lose sight of the fact that their offense is horrible overall. This season, they have scored the fourth fewest goals. Expect them to come back down to earth just like they did on November 15 when they followed up a similar two-game streak of strong offensive outputs with a one-goal output against Ottawa’s statistically mediocre defense.

Seattle has one of the best defenses, ranking third in limiting goals, ensuring that it is a great underdog pick. The Kraken allowed two empty-netters in their last game against Minnesota, creating an inflated goals allowed total that misrepresents how competitive they were. By concealing their competitiveness, their losing streak conceals the betting value that lies with the home dog.

The Kraken are seven points behind Los Angeles in their division, so this is a big spot for them in which to respond to their coach’s demand that more players bring their best. As also evident in its narrow loss to Dallas on November 26, this is a dangerous and competitive team whose losing streak is primed to end because it is playing well against solid teams and now gets Los Angeles in a down spot.

For the above reasons,
Kraken ML makes for a fantastic home underdog pick.

I’m liking the under in Seattle. I think it’s actually the kings who are third best in goals allowed, but Seattle is not bad either. And neither team is great at scoring. I think Seattle may be dead last in scoring.

As of today both Kraken and Kings rank second in goals allowed.
