"WEC 36: Faber vs. Brown" fight card finalized

The fight card for "WEC 36: Brown vs. Faber," an event originally scheduled for Sept. 10 but postponed due to Hurricane Ike, has been finalized.

The WEC confirmed the Nov. 5 card, which features a main event between WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber (21-1) and challenger Mike Brown (19-4), today.

The event takes place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., and airs live on Versus.

In addition to the Faber vs. Brown title fight, WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho (16-0) returns from an extended layoff for a rematch with Chael Sonnen (20-9-1). The two fighters first met in December 2007 at WEC 31, where Filho picked up his 16th consecutive victory. However, Sonnen, who dished out a considerable amount of damage, claimed he never intended to submit from Filho's arm-bar submission (despite an audible grunt of pain) with just five seconds remaining in the second round.

The Filho-Sonnen bout will be the final middleweight title fight in the WEC. The division, as well as the light-heavyweight class, will be folded into the UFC by year's end.

In a key featherweight bout, former top contender Jens Pulver (22-9-1) meets title hopeful and fellow UFC veteran Leonard Garcia (11-3).

WEC 36 weigh-in results: Filho misses weight by seven pounds on first attempt

Weigh-ins for "WEC 36: Faber vs. Brown" took place today at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., the same venue that hosts tomorrow's Versus-televised event.

The event, originally scheduled for Sept. 10 but postponed due to Hurricane Ike, features two title fights.

Urijah Faber defends his featherweight title against Mike Brown, and WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho meets Chael Sonnen in a rematch from their 2007 bout.

Two of the title-fight participants failed to make weigh on the first attempt. Filho was an eyebrow-raising seven pounds over the 185-pound limit and is now trying to cut weight. Featherweight challenger Brown (who was a half-pound over the 145-pound limit) has since made weight.

In thier first fight back in 2007, Sonnen gave Filho a very hard time in the first round, Filho came back in the second round and caught Sonnen in armbar that was very controversial. The 2 was supposed to fight again abck in March, but Filho had to check himself into rehab for substance abuse.

This will be Filho first fight since he won over Sonnen. I dont know what condition he's in and/or mentally. He's going to have to cut weight to make it an official title bout...7lbs in a lot and I can imagine it takes a toll on him. I've been reading that Sonnen wanted this rematch real bad and I think he can take Filho.

I'm taking Sonnen at whatever odds I can find.....

Good info Spooks.

7lbs in 1 day is insane, especially considering he probably just dropped 10-15+ just to get to 196.

I wouldn't be surprised that he's already dehydrated as fuck. It'll suck the energy right out of of him.

Maybe they hook him up to some sweet ass IVs all night, to juice him back up? I don't know.

Changed my mind just grabbed sonnen at +140...my local seems to be a little behind...i will take it while I can

well i can still get Faber at -420...

i see lots of -550 out there, so i might take this for a little.... might be worth a bit ?

i can get sonnen at +150 .... should i get this before its too late ??

Any out that's offering this, will probably hold steady.

They're allowing the fight to go on, only 3 rounds though.

So it won't be a title fight any more, and Filoh will weigh more than a small vehicle.

I expect the line to maybe get even higher from where it is, so just sit tight.

It won't get any worse.

I still think Sonnen wins, from what I'm reading.

if you're betting filho or sonnen at this point, you're probably just guessing.

the best bet on the card is osterneck. sure, rosholt is great wrestler, but osterneck is a very good fighter that few know about. his striking will be much better and i doubt rosholt will be able to do much if he gets the fight on the ground, rosholt might be defending subs the whole time at that point.

i agree that rosholt should be favored, but osterneck is definitely a live dog.

pulver and garcia is a toss up, bet your emotion and cheer hard.

WEC is greatness!

Filho not making weight changes the game plan. He'll be much heavier of-course, but I wonder if not making weight was already in his game plan. WEC has already stated that they're going to do away with the MW, LHW, and HW divisions. So it has me thinking if Filho really didn't care if he made weight or not.....I mean 7lbs. over weight is a lot. Any title holder would have never come in that far off from not making weight...especially if the belt is on the line.

it cost him 25% of his purse, they dont make enough money to just give it away.

well i can still get Faber at -430, while Bodog and Sportsbook list him as -650 and -675...

is that worth taking???

hmmmm.......

damn they took down sonnen +150 just like 5 minutes ago...

i wanted to grab that - i should have last night.... fuck

ok decided to bite the bullet and go with the champ at a much better price than any online book is offering at the moment....

i'm getting the opening line which is best line anywhere (it's from my local)...

Urijah Faber -430 (860/200)........:prayer

:box:

maybe one of these days i'll learn....

stop taking the big favorite in MMA when i have this feeling they won't lose - i just never win those bets! <label for="rb_iconid_9">

:hang:

Cerrone, who was favored, beat McCullough.... this was dropped from the main card though....

i still think Faber was a good bet here.... he wins this fight more often than he losses, he just didn't come through last night...

i was a bit gunshy about jumping on another "sure" winner after the Liddell debacle, but that was b/c my assessment of Liddell was totally wrong.... i didn't give Evans enough credit for all his wins, and totally passed on him being able to beat Liddell...

here though i think Faber just got caught trying to be too flashy and Browns power stunned him.... had Faber gone in with a bit better of a game plan i see this fight turning out much differently... he should have taken his time with Brown instead of going for that highlight reel win - obviously hindsight is 20/20 and Faber's flashiness and fast paced 1st rds have worked well in his favor in the past, Brown was just a much better fighter than i think Faber gave him credit for...

i still don't think Brown is that great, but a rematch should be rather soon since WEC was talking about putting on a PPV... i don't see them selling many PPVs without their golden boy on the card in a title match.... Garcia is next in line though so i guess we'll have to wait and see what gets decided...

Filho looked fat and outta shape. He is a disgrace to the sport. A year ago, people were talking like he was the only fighter at 185 that could challenge Anderson. Spider would kill him with out ever being within 2 feet of this guy with his reach.

I was embarrassed for him after watching his performance

I think he didn't care if he won or lost the fight...knowing the belt wasn't on the line!!

Facing Chael Sonnen for the second time, Paulo Filho knew is first loss ever after 17 fights, yesterday. With a bad performance, Filho was defeated by unanimous decision, and did an exclusive interview to TATAME.com at his hotel room, at Florida. “What can I do, it’s sad… The fact is that I have no excuses, he (Sonnen) went there and did his job to neutralize me and that’s what happened, he did the right job and he has all merits… It was good to give me a new spirit”, said Filho, who revealed he’s moving to Los Angeles after new training.

“(Train) Here will be good, everybody is coming here and that’s because it works. At Brazil we hadn’t a good training camp, and here I believe we’ll have a high level training”, spoke Filho, supported by his coach Josuel Distak. “The loss isn’t good, but that’s good to learn. We need more focus, responsibility, and the weight is a problem… What happened yesterday we’ll forget and start all over again. We’ll train here and get our rematch with Sonnen, and then go to light-heavyweight division”, revealed Distak. Stay tuned on TATAME.com for more news about WEC</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
