Lets get this discussion going as I am on the fence on this game.

:announce:

Part of me is wanting to back this USC team that has pretty much said FU to lane and is coming together...this is NOT the same USC team that we saw before his firing and are starting to play to their potential especially on D.

It’s been a month since Lane Kiffin was fired and USC’s record is not much different than when Kiffin was in charge of the Trojans.
USC won two games in which it was favored against Arizona and Utah and lost as an underdog at Notre Dame.
This raises the question of whether the Trojans (5-3, 2-2) actually are better off since firing their controversial coach. The players certainly are happier as their daily comments illustrate, but have their actual performances improved?
One reason USC lost to Washington State under Kiffin was two missed field goals. The Trojans lost to Notre Dame under interim coach Ed Orgeron because of two missed field goals.
<!-- end articleparagraph1.pbo --><!-- start articleparagraph1.pbo -->
It probably is unrealistic to expect Orgeron to completely change a team in mid-season. Instead of wondering if USC is better, perhaps the smarter question is how much worse would USC be if Orgeron was not keeping the Trojans together.
“He’s made the year one to remember regardless of what our record is or what our record ends up,” safety Dion Bailey said of Orgeron.
Bailey famously took a pain injection at halftime against Utah last week and suited up to play the second half after safety Su’a Cravens got hurt because he said he “owed it” to Orgeron for always supporting the team.
<!-- end articleparagraph1.pbo --><!-- start articleparagraph1.pbo -->
That mindset was echoed by safety Demetrius Wright, who barely saw the field his first three seasons but was USC’s best defensive player against Utah according to Orgeron.
“I had it in me all the time,” Wright said. “(Orgeron) gave me the chance.”
When USC athletic director Pat Haden fired Kiffin he alluded to a pattern of trouble signs dating to the season opener against Hawaii. He decided to fire Kiffin during Arizona State’s 28-0 run in the third quarter of a 62-41 loss.
There may have been a feeling USC quit during the Arizona State game.
<!-- end articleparagraph1.pbo --><!-- start articleparagraph1.pbo -->
If Kiffin remained, maybe USC would have experienced a similar meltdown at Notre Dame or lost to Arizona at the Coliseum. Instead, USC probably should have beaten the Irish and held off the Wildcats under Orgeron.
Another difference is USC’s roster changed for the worse since Kiffin departed. The Trojans did not have a scholarship tight end against Utah last weekend and Orgeron has not had a healthy Marqise Lee during his three-game tenure.
One can only imagine how Kiffin would react to that when he used to rattle off the number of injured players on the roster and scholarship reductions when things went sour. The Trojans’ offense also looked more dynamic when tailback Tre Madden was healthy and he missed the critical 14-10 loss to Notre Dame.
<!-- end articleparagraph1.pbo --><!-- start articleparagraph1.pbo -->
Even more daunting for Orgeron, he will take USC to Oregon State with one less day to recover because the game is being played Friday night in Corvallis, Ore.
“It is what it is,” said Orgeron, who joked USC might benefit playing Friday because of its injury predicament.
“It might be better because we practice less,” Orgeron said.
If USC upsets Oregon State (6-2, 4-1), it will give Orgeron a chance at improving the Trojans’ bowl situation. USC must win two more regular-season games to become bowl-eligible and right now most analysts project the Trojans to play in the New Mexico Bowl.
<!-- end articleparagraph1.pbo --><!-- start articleparagraph1.pbo -->
There still are many scenarios available, however, and USC is not eliminated from playing in the Rose Bowl if enough crazy things happen. Each victory improves the quality of the bowl and the Trojans surely want to do better than the New Mexico Bowl.
One also could argue if Kiffin stayed recruiting would be different. Linebacker Derik Calhoun decommitted and announced he would attend Arizona State this week but that was expected to happen even if Kiffin remained.
Orgeron’s added three commitments since taking over as coach — linebackers Olajuwon Tucker of Serra High School in Gardena and Uchenna Nwosu of Narbonne in Harbor City along with wide receiver Shay Fields of St. John Bosco in Bellflower.
<!-- end articleparagraph1.pbo --><!-- start articleparagraph1.pbo -->
None are considered blue-chip prospects and it’s unlikely Kiffin would offer them if he still was around. The flip side is Orgeron is creating some buzz in Southern California and providing a base of recruits for the next USC coach, who could be unfamiliar with the area.
The bottom line is this will be remembered as a rough season for USC and its fans. The record might not seem any better the past month but it might have been worse.

Trojans at Reser stadium, off a short week with guys taking injections just to get on the team bus? Nah. Didn't take long to handicap this one.

Irish yeah since most gamblers love betting the chalk I would say at least 90 percent will be on OREGON STATE

As a USC alum, kiffin had to be fired after GT bowl game.

Anyway the team completely quit on him..

Not saying they're all of a sudden playing for a bcs title but they'd be 0-3 in the past 3 games if he stayed.

I don't know the last time Ore St was favored over USC, maybe in the 90s? One thing to get up for USC during PC run and play spoiler, another thing to be favored against a wounded animal.. Riley has always seemed as a better coach getting pts.. Whether vs USC or any other foe.

I'll take the ML dog and hope they have some rabies to pass out

what teedub said.

the zona game was a solid 1st half, as they were free of lane. but don't overlook how they reverted to form in the 2nd half. don't overlook how bad they looked at times (most of the time) on offense against notre dame. and don't overlook how fortunate they were to catch utah w/out a healthy qb.
they field-goaled the utes to death, cuz they only had to worry about the running game defensively. the trojan pass defense isn't nearly as stout. (which is an understatement.)

usc will have some success pounding the ball/running, of course...but they are very banged up...and we all know how they do up in corvallis. coaching advantage big time for oregon st too.

only negative about this game heading in is that the public is all over the beavers. that makes me a bit uncomfortable, tbh. i know some people do it, but blindly fading the public isn't for me. there's gotta be something more (concrete) behind it.

disregard my previous comment. huge (new) negative...lang is on the beavers tonight...so run like hell (away) while you still have a chance.

i kid, kinda...and i'm sticking with my play. but i'd be flat out lying if i said i it didn't matter to me that lang played oregon st. not much worse than being on the same side as a fuckin jinx like that. ;)

I'll pat myself on the back for this one...

But seriously, for anyone who cares to listen, USC is a far different team now than with Kiffin. They may not have the roster numbers to beat Stanford or UCLA, but they're playing much harder, and having fun in the process. Guys that were in Kiffin's doghouse (Buck Allen) are tearing it up.. Just a totally different environment. That dude was toxic for the program.

good call, 53. they dominated the trenches...beavs failed to adjust. let alone tackle...and everything fell their way.
