Fight Of The Night: Alex Pereira vs Khalil Rountree Jr
There was never any doubt why Khalil Rountree Jr was chosen for this thankless assignment vs Alex Pereira. Through the first two rounds, he was up on the scorecards and undeniably in the pole position. But in the championship rounds, “Poatan” reminded everyone why he’s a force across two (and maybe one day) three different divisions; a venerable puzzle that has yet to be completely solved.
Performance Of The Night: Ryan Spann
Upon dispatching the veteran Ovince Saint Preux, Ryan Spann approached the broadcast booth and said that was the “Super-Manatee,” his new name for a savage guillotine choke he executed just 95 seconds into the first round to get the Utah crowd to their feet. As he himself acknowledged, he’s dangerous when he’s consistent. And if the Fortis product can maintain this level of consistency, the light heavyweight division should sit up and take notice.
Performance Of The Night: Joaquin Buckley
Joaquin Buckley, the owner of perhaps the most recognizable KO in UFC history added another knockout to the trophy case with a shocking drop of Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson in the third round of the featured prelim. It looked like the fight was going to go to the scorecards—and probably for Wonderboy—when Buckley found the perfect home for his right hand and all the undeniable power that comes with it. Fighters looking past “New Mansa” do so at their peril.
