Tuesday American League Wild Card Game
931 Houston Astros* -106 vs New York Yankees x1
931 Houston Astros/New York Yankees* Over 6 -185 x1
931 Houston Astros/New York Yankees* Over 7 -112 x1
The Houston Astros are my feel good tm in the American League postseason as they haven’t enjoyed too much success the past several years and generally were a team trading away some of their talent for draft picks. The Astros led the ALWest for a good portion of the season before eventually slowing down enough for the Rangers to overtake them but instead of folding Houston hung on to snag a Wild Card spot. The Stros strategy is straightforward in that they are one of the top power hitting teams in the game and that makes this a dangerous team in a one game playoff. Keuchel with just four runs given up in the last 20.2 innings. Keuchel has faced the Yankees twice this season and has yet to allow a run in 16 innings and he’s 20-8 with a 2.48 ERA and 216 strikeouts this season. Keuchel is 2-1 with a 1.13 ERA and 26 strikeouts in his career against the Yankees. A pt of note, Keuchel, who is 15-0 with a 1.46 ERA at home, but is 5-8 with a 3.77 ERA on the road in 2015 but won at Arizona on Friday and will be making Tuesday’s start on three days’ rest for the first time in his career. Keuchel struck out nine and scattered three hits in seven scoreless frames at New York on Aug. 25 and is 2-1 with a 1.13 ERA in three career starts against the Yankees.
And then the 'to old' Yankees who in fact have sprinkled some youth here and there throughout their lineup and endured their share of injuries as well and some of the faces that began the season will be cheering on their team from the sidelines. The Yanks end the season with defeats in six of their last seven where the pitching has struggled. Tanaka faced the Astros in late June in a 9-6 victory where he allowed all six runs on seven hits including three homers in five innings.
This is an interesting game simply because the Astros are better on paper and the Yankees ended the season in a major slump. However, you can't underestimate experience come playoff time. The Astros are an extremely young team that turned the corner a lot sooner than most expected. Meanwhile, the Yanks are full of veterans and have been here done that.
I think probably the best play is on the Over. Yankee stadium is not an easy place to throw and this New York offense is deadly, second in baseball in runs scored, 4th in slugging and 10th in on base percentage. Houston is 6-2 over the total when Keuchel starts. New York is 5-1 over the total at home against a team with a winning record. And when these teams clash the over is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings in New York. Even though the Yanks have made me a bunch of coin this yr, and the better value, my heart is with the Stros so thats where one unit of my coin goes. A bit surprised that the total has remained @ 7 but I sure like the Over
