Boston Bruins +1.5 at -195
St. Louis Blues ML at -127

Florida is worth fading on the road: so far, the Panthers are 0-4 in their away games. Their offense suffers the most: in their four road games, they’ve scored a combined total of four goals. It’s not like they’re simply facing tough competition. For example, they beat the Flyers by one goal at home before losing to them by three goals on the road.

While the Bruins are coming off consecutive losses, they stayed within one goal in every game except against a Colorado team that is far superior to the road version of Florida. Moreover, they have been a winning team at home, which explains their early-season success that they will revive tonight. At home, they’ve displayed improvement in penalty kill and power play and in general have proven wrong those who doubted the depth of their talent.

The Kings have struggled this entire season: they are 1-5 now. Valued center Anze Kopitar’s injury doesn’t help matters – he has an assist in all four games but will be sidelined today. Their coach has tried to make adjustments, but the wins still aren’t coming. Conversely, the Blues just beat Dallas. Unlike the Kings, St. Louis can be counted on to play a strong 60 minutes. Having Matthew Kessel replace Logan Mailloux proved to be a good decision, as Kessel helps limit the number of shots that the opponent is able to take. This success on defense makes it easier for their offense to score enough to win, which it will do against a Kings team that has allowed at least four goals in nearly all of its games thus far.

Avalanche ML at -135
Over 6 at -107

I like the over because both teams come into this game having scored at least three goals in each of their last three games. For Utah, Nick Schmaltz’s activity around the net has made him an effective goalscorer, while, with six assists, he is also making great passes to set up his teammates. Utah is able to rely on several other players. As for the Avalanche, they have the fourth-best goal-scoring offense. My favorite reason for the “over” is both teams are experiencing an expected goals against total that is vastly higher than their actual goals against total. So, while media talking heads will talk about the paucity of goals that both teams have allowed, the reality is that this defensive success is unsustainable given the quality of chances that they are allowing. So, we have two consistently successful offenses who are going up against defenses that are slated to experience statistical regression.

The Avalanche moneyline is a great addition to this parlay because the Avs have the higher-powered offense led by the six goals of Nathan MacKinnon. MacKinnon leads a top line that has excelled at creating good chances. In general, the Avs display great speed and puck movement, making them one of the most dangerous offenses, an offense that readily exploits opposing vulnerabilities and mistakes. In a battle between two solid offenses, the Avs have a clear edge.

Ducks-Predators Under 6 at -106
Devils +1.5 at -254

The “under” is a good play with the Predators, who have failed to exceed two goals in four of their six games this season. They exceeded this goal total in a high-scoring-type of game against Toronto and in their game against an Ottawa team that allows the third-most goals. Given the ongoing struggles of players on whom they depend strongly, such as Filip Forsberg and Steven Stamkos, Nashville can’t be expected to score much in general. The Ducks themselves enter this game having scored one goal in each of their last two games.

The Devils are playing really well right now, having won each of their last four games. It’s become evident that their offseason moves are paying out by adding depth. As for Toronto’s offseason, they clearly miss Mitch Marner. Without his passing ability, the Maple Leafs have become less reliable on offense. New Jersey has a very disruptive defense that a guy like Marner would have helped Toronto navigate. The Devils will reduce Toronto’s rhythm on offense and leverage their disruptiveness on defense to create more scoring chances for themselves. Toronto’s defense already has too many weaknesses as it is. Overall, getting an extra goal with the better and more cohesive unit is a great deal. Talk of tension in Toronto’s locker room helps us further.
