Texas Rangers vs. Minnesota Twins
Thursday, August 24, 2023 at 7:10 p.m. ET at Target Field in Minnesota

  • Minnesota hits Andrew Heaney's pitches from lefties very poorly
  • Pablo Lopez boasts tremendous form
  • The Rangers' lineup is cold

Who Starts for the Rangers?

Andrew Heaney starts for Texas tonight.

Heaney is coming off a start in which he was unfortunate to allow as many runs as he did.

His ERA in his last start was poor because he was the victim of a high BABIP (batting average of balls in play).

A deeper dive offers confidence in his current form.

Most prominently, he did a tremendous job of minimizing hard contact and he was good at inducing soft contact.

The fact that he yielded a 2.45 FIP (like ERA but factors out fielding) indicates that he actually performed well.

Heaney vs. Twins Batters

Heaney throws a fastball, slider, and changeup.

He puts a lot of spin on his fastball, which he loves to elevate, such that batters see a lot of rising action, which induces them to swing underneath it.

With his arsenal, Heaney's outlook is strong tonight because the Twins rank 24th with a .384 slugging rate against Heaney's pitches from lefties.

Who Starts for the Twins?

Pablo Lopez starts for Minnesota tonight.

Lopez enters today's game in tremendous form: he has shut out each of his last three opponents.

While lasting at least six innings, he allowed zero runs to Detroit, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh.

More extensively, he has allowed a combined total of five earned runs in his last six starts.

Rangers Lineup

Texas is enduring a six-game losing streak, as part of which they've failed to exceed three runs five times.

As part of this streak, they're slugging .359 against Lopez's pitches from righties.

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Baltimore Orioles
Thursday, August 24, 2023 at 7:05 p.m. ET at Camden Yards in Baltimore

  • Jose Berrios enjoys promising form
  • Berrios does a good job of inducing soft contact
  • Berrios loves pitching in Baltimore's Camden Yards

Who Starts for Toronto?

Jose Berrios starts for the Blue Jays tonight.

Berrios is coming off an excellent start in which he allowed one hit and zero runs in Cincinnati's hitter-friendly ballpark.

Especially lately, Berrios has done a strong job of inducing soft contact.

In order to do a strong job of this, he relies on locating and moving his pitches well and on keeping hitters off-balance.

Berrios' Arsenal

Berrios throws four pitches: slurve, sinker, fastball, and changeup.

His reliance on the slurve makes him a unique challenge for batters.

This pitch has a good amount of spin and a strong combination of vertical and horizontal movement.

He does a great job of burying it.

In terms of location and velocity, he plays it well especially off his fastball, which averages almost twelve more mph and which he's likelier to elevate.

Because of how he plays them off each other, while his fastball is statistically his weakest pitch, it contributes to the effectiveness of his slurve.

While Berrios' slurve yields a .335 slugging rate, his sinker and changeup are also particularly hard to hit.

He does a great job of locating his changeup along the borders of the strike zone, and he ably distributes his sinker evenly throughout the zone.

Key Stat

Berrios is worth investing in because he loves pitching in Baltimore.

At the Orioles' ballpark, he is 6-0 with a 2.02 ERA in seven career starts.

His success here is most recent: on June 14 in Baltimore, he allowed three hits and zero runs in 7.2 innings.

Best Bet: Jose Berrios under 2.5 earned runs at -110 with Bovada

Cincinnati Reds vs. Arizona Diamondbacks
Thursday, August 24, 2023 at 9:40 p.m. ET at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona

  • Brandon Williamson matches up well against Arizona
  • Merrill Kelly shows good form and is in a good spot tonight
  • Cincinnati owns the clearly better bullpen

Who Starts for the Reds?

Brandon Williamson starts for Cincinnati tonight.

Williamson was unfortunate to allow as many runs as he did in his last start.

He was the victim of a high BABIP (batting average of balls in play), which was unfortunate in that he did a great job both of inducing soft contact and of minimizing hard contact.

In actuality, his performance in his last start is consistent with what he had done in his two previous starts when he allowed one run in 5.2 innings in Pittsburgh and one run in 6.2 innings against Miami.

Williamson vs. Diamondbacks

Williamson is a lefty who, primarily, throws a fastball, cutter, changeup, sweeper, and curveball.

His outlook today is strong because Arizona matches up poorly against him.

The Diamondbacks rank 21st with a .405 slugging rate against his favorite pitches from lefties.

While they are enjoying a four-game win streak, they're slugging .273 against Williamson's pitches from lefties during this streak.

Who Starts for the Diamondbacks?

Merrill Kelly starts for Arizona today.

Despite facing the likes of the Dodgers, Kelly had allowed two earned runs or fewer in three straight games before struggling with the Padres yet again.

He's primed to bounce back, as he's done directly after his most recent weaker starts.

Cincinnati's Bullpen Advantage

Both starters are even and will contribute to the "under," but the Reds will triumph with their superior bullpen.

Whereas Arizona's bullpen ranks 23rd with a 4.59 ERA, Cincinnati's ranks eleven spots higher with a 3.87 ERA.
