The WFC sign Howard...

Star first baseman Ryan Howard has agreed to a three-year, $54 million contract extension with the Phillies, avoiding salary arbitration for the next three seasons, the team announced Sunday.

Howard had submitted a figure of $18 million while the Phillies submitted $14 million. The deal is a boon to the team that needed to avoid conflict with its premier player.

Last spring, Howard won $10 million at the arbitration table, a record award for an arbitration-eligible player.

Howard, the 2005 National League Rookie of the Year and 2006 NL Most Valuable Player, has hit 153 home runs with 431 RBIs over the past three seasons, both tops in the majors.

The Phillies slugger, 29, will be eligible for free agency after the 2011 season.

Basically what this means is this team will be in tact for 3 more years

Hamels, Howard and Lidge all signed 3 year deals this year

Rollins is under contract through 2011...

Come 2012, the only guy left might be Utley...

But by then we'll be the four time defending WFCs so that may attract some players/entice some to stay...

"I'm happy to have this done and to know that I'll be in Philadelphia for at least another three years," Howard said in a statement. "Both sides are happy, and now I'm just focused on getting the season started and having fun."

"We're very pleased to have avoided the arbitration process, not just for this year, but also for the next two," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said in a statement. "Ryan is clearly one of the top power hitters and run producers in the major leagues, and is a very important part of our championship club."

Here's the breakdown on the Howard deal: $15 million in 2009, $19 million in 2010 and $20 million in his walk year of 2011.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the contract is a clause that would require the Phillies to pay Howard $1 million if he is traded before Nov. 1, 2010.
Howard's future, of course, has been the subject for much speculation over the past year because of the two sides' inaiblity to come to terms on a long-term deal.
Howard's base salary would increase by $1 million in 2010 and 2011 if he was named MVP in the preceding season. In 2011, an MVP would bring him a $1 million bonus. Bonuses are also included for World Series MVP ($100,000), LCS MVP ($50,000), Gold Glove ($50,000), $100,000 for Silver Slugger, and $50,000 for an All-Star selection.

I don't know who is happier today: Ryan Howard, who agreed to a three-year, $54 million contract, or myself, who doesn't have to spend the next week, plus two more offseasons, asking him about his arbitration situation.
The nuts and bolts: Howard will earn an average of $18 million per season over the next three years, making him the highest-paid Phillie and the second-highest paid first baseman in all of baseball, behind only the Yankees Mark Texeira. Howard's contract is tied for the ninth largest in baseball in terms of average annual value.
Here is the complete list:
1. C.C. Sabathia, Yankees, $23 million
2. Johan Santana, Mets, $22.9 million
3. Mark Teixeira, Yankees, $22.5 million
4. Miguel Cabrera, Tigers, $19.037 million
5. Derek Jeter, Yankees, $18.9 million
6. Carlos Zambrano, Cubs, $18.3 million
7. Andruw Jones, Dodgers, $18.1 million
8. Torri Hunter, Angels, $18 million
T-9. Vernon Wells, Blue Jays, $18 million
T-9. Barry Zito, Giants, $18 million
T-9. Ryan Howard, Phillies, $18 million

The contract makes a lot of sense on both sides. The Phillies were facing a situation where, if they had lost this arbitration hearing, Howard could have been making upwards of $25 to $30 million in his walk year through the arbitration process. Seems to me like a pretty smart move for Casey Close to make such a large request, because at the very least it gave him more leverage when it came to hammering out a deal.
Howard, meanwhile, sets himself and his family up for life, while leaving the door open for an even bigger pay-day should he maintain the level of health and production he has displayed over the past three-plus seasons.
The Phillies Opening Day payroll will now break the $130 million mark.

Ryan Howard will not be available to the media until later this week. He is in Florida, but is not at Bright House Networks Field Today. Ruben Amaro Jr. is scheduled to meet the media this afternoon at 2:30 p.m.

what a horrible contract for the phils.

Are you joking?

Its a fantastic contract for the Phils

He wasnt gonna agree to anything that would take any FA years away...

He asked for 18 mil this year in arbitration...had he got it then hed be in line for what? 24 next year? 28 the year after that?

They locked him up at 18 per for 3 years...

andruw jones 18.1 million .. sick. worse than zito.

A-ROD sucks too.

Jones is old and no longer using steroids. He hit bottom like so many others have the last 2 years who were forced off them. Look at all those guys who were htiing home runs, that now cant hit any. (Pudge Rodriguez etc....)

Cheating sucks and thats why Cleveland will roll this year! Cleveland has enogh picting and losing Sabathia wont matter in the end if they dont get hit with injuries.

Yanks went and got pitchers because they no longer dominate games with hitting.
