Pick: Over 2.5 Goals
Romania and Serbia are both averaging about two goals per match in their last few matches. The Serb to watch out for is Aleksander Mitrovic. Mitrovic plays for the English club Fulham, where he has five goals so far. He also netted two goals in his last game against Montenegro. In Serbia’s last match against Romania, Mitrovic achieved two goals en route to a 2-2 draw. He’s a great prop bet to score at anytime. Mitrovic is in great form and Romania won’t stop him from scoring.
The Romanians are coming off a very frustrating performance against Montenegro. They produced 16 shots, but no goals out of them. Expect them to bounce back because you’ll have to go to the beginning of 2017 to find the last time when Romania was shut out in consecutive outings. Romania boasts some quality midfielders like Maxim and Chipciu who have experience in Europa League-quality clubs and can create goal-scoring chances.
Azerbaijan vs Malta (12 PM ET)
Pick: Azerbaijan -1
It’s a common betting tactic to scan for teams that you think will win. But sometimes, it’s smart to look for losers in order to find winners. Malta is one of those teams that I automatically look to fade. This team has lost seven of its last eight road fixtures. Six of those losses came by at least two goals. They’ve lost decisively against countries you probably never heard of like Faroe Islands by 3-1, Kosovo by 3-1, etc. In their last eight road games, they’ve mustered three goals and conceded 17. What makes this game an exciting spot is that in their last match, in September in Malta, Azerbaijan and Malta produced a draw. Malta didn’t get a single shot on goal and only got off one shot, but it scored on a penalty and Azerbaijan had an off-day in front of the net, casting in only one goal. On Sunday, Azerbaijan will look to make up for that embarrassment.
Azerbaijan has shut out their past two opponents at home. So another way to approach this game would be to bet Azerbaijan to win to nil. Azerbaijan can be very tough at home. In March, for instance, they achieved a draw against a Macedonia side that is know for being a thorn in the side of powerhouses like Spain. Against these lower-tiered countries, count on Azerbaijan to not concede. But Malta’s defense is so inept and it has so much trouble maintaining possession, that Azerbaijan will eventually be able to drive up the score.
Lithuania vs Montenegro (2:45 ET)
Pick: Under 1.5 Goals
Lithuania can hold lower-tiered teams like Latvia or Estonia to, at most, one goal, but itself netted only three goals in its last six home matches. The thing is, Montenegro is worth fading too because of its lack of offense. Its last three road games ended in a 0:0 result. They scored zero goals, even against Cyprus.
