Box Scorin': Navy runs, runs, runs, eschews a pass or two

Weird, wild and prolific stats from Saturday's action.

• We're in a cycle of general offensive explosiveness, but at very different extremes. There's Texas Tech on end, and the service academies on the other: Earlier this year, Air Force won a game in which it didn't complete a pass in four attempts; two weeks ago, Army repeated the trick by going 0-3 through the air in a win over Eastern Michigan. Thursday night, Air Force's passing line in a 23-10 win over New Mexico was 1-2 for two yards with one touchdown and one interception. Saturday, Navy finally went all the way against SMU, taking a 20-0 lead in the first quarter and riding it out without attempting a single pass en route to a rain-soaked 34-7 win. The Midshipmen ran 77 times in 77 plays, for 404 yards, 224 by third-string quarterback Ricky Dobbs, who carried 42 times and scored four touchdowns.
• Oklahoma scored four touchdowns on 14 offensive plays in the first quarter of the Sooners' eventual 58-35 win over Kansas State. This was the craziest half of the season all the way: OU and KSU combined for 745 yards, 9.1 yards per snap, and more points (83) than offensive plays (82). Again, that's just the first half; the Wildcats outscored Oklahoma 7-3 in the second.
• Nearly rivaling OU-KSU, Rutgers and Pittsburgh combined for seven touchdown drives of five plays or less in the first half, all of them covering at least 56 yards. The Knights also added a 10-play, 71-yard scoring drive in the first quarter, and finished with a season-high 442 yards in a fairly stunning 54-34 win.
• On the opposite end, I don't want to jinx them or anything, but it looked like complete rock bottom for Washington, which punted on its first nine possessions and didn't have a single play longer than nine yards until well into fourth quarter garbage time of a 33-7 loss to Notre Dame. Charlie Weis called off the dogs, but still couldn't resist calling a fake punt with a 24-0 lead in the third quarter.
• Minnesota held Purdue to six points and a new season low with 226 yards total offense. In 2007, Purdue gained well over 500 yards at Minnesota and scored 17 points in the first quarter alone on the way to 45 for the game.

• UCLA finished with 16 yards rushing with a long gain of eight yards in a 41-20 loss to Cal. The longest run by a Bruin running back was six yards, by Duane Coleman, who finished with four carries for six yards.
• Wake Forest gained 198 yards in the first half while building a 10-3 lead at Miami, but gained only 68 yards and was outscored 13-0 in the second half of a 16-10 loss that likely eliminates Wake from ... wait, never mind. In the ACC, no one is ever eliminated. They only walk through shadows on the journey.
• Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers: Cincinnati gave it away six times while taking none in a lopsided loss at UConn, and Northwestern was –5 in giveaways in a much closer, 21-19 loss at Indiana.
• Baylor mounted back-to-back touchdown drives covering 68 yards in three plays and 96 yards in five plays in the first quarter of an eventual loss to Nebraska; within those eight snaps, the Bears had three different plays for 40 yards or more, including both scores. The Huskers answered with a 12-play, 99-yard drive in a dominant second half.
• Florida scored touchdowns on eight of its first ten possessions in a 63-5 rout of Kentucky, including one and two-yard "drives" following back-to-back blocked punts in the first quarter but not including an interception return for a score in the third.
• Missouri scored on five of its six first half possessions and outgained Colorado 296 yards to 11 en route to building a 34-0 lead at the break.
• Even the worst teams in the Big 12 made no pretense of stopping one another: Iowa State and Texas A&M combined for 84 points and 1,083 yards, 782 of them passing, in the Aggies' 49-35 win. The offenses converted 22 of 30 third downs.

Sunday Hangover: Why Can't Penn State?

This was for those who like their baseball games as pitchers' duels, their offenses by Auburn and their movies starring Kirsten Dunst.

This one was for those who like 'em ugly.

Penn State's 13-6 win over Ohio State was artistic only in the way modern sculpture is artistic, which is to say if you squinted while drinking heavily. It was football-in the-snow ugly and teams-constructed-by-Matt Millen difficult to stomach. In the college football landscape of spread offenses and scores that run higher than Iowa's arrest tally, this was smashmouth football at its finest.

Even a Big Ten replay official couldn't mistake it for what it was.

The Nittany Lions punched the clock, put their hard hats on and started slugging -- for three hours. Their vaunted Spread HD offense was reduced to rabbit ears with aluminum foil -- quarterback Darryl Clark finished with 121 yards passing and the Nittany Lions managed a total yardage output that might've been mistaken for Shawn Kemp's cholesterol count. Meanwhile, the unlikely hero, Penn State backup quarterback Pat Devlin came off the bench to lead the Lions to victory and didn't throw a pass, while the likely hero, Ohio State's Terrelle Pryor, fumbled away the lead.

But for whatever shortcomings the offense had, the Penn State defense put on a clinic of high-definition bell-ringing, crushing the Buckeye offense like an sledgehammer hitting an empty beer can.

Sure, Joe Paterno's sock drawer might be more interesting, but now that the borders of the BCS puzzle are put together, Penn State is entrenched in the middle. Even at No. 3, they're so close to the driver's seat that the Nittany Lions all but moving the gear shift out of their butt pad. You might forgive them if, in political parlance, they're already measuring the drapes in Dolphin Stadium.

But do they deserve it?
That the Nittany Lions are currently third in the pecking order isn't exactly a red-state, blue-state kind of divide. Both No. 1 Texas and No. 2 Alabama have played against schedules that might as well be the NFC East compared to Penn State. If Texas finishes the season undefeated, they will have defeated four teams ranked in the top 11 and possibly five if Missouri takes the Big 12 North, rights its season and loses to the Longhorns again. Alabama's win over then-No. 9 Clemson might be selling for pennies on the dollar with the Tigers' collapse, but if the Tide finishes undefeated, they'll have a win over a likely top-10 team in Georgia and a second over the SEC East champion, plus a win over defending national champion LSU.

And Texas Tech, which faces an upcoming three-game schedule that would make the Washington Generals think the deck is stacked against them, will waltz into the BCS title game should they beat Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas and win the Big 12 to finish undefeated.

But, in language baseball fans on the other side of the Keystone State might understand, aside from those three undefeated scenarios, "Why can't Nittany Lions?"

While the rest of the college football world is giving up golf scores on a weekly basis, Penn State has managed to keep opposing teams to something more like Tiger Woods on a putt-putt course. Defensive coordinator Tom Bradley compared his group to a fourth line in hockey. But with brutal playmakers Aaron Maybin, Navorro Bowman and Maurice Evans, they're a fourth line only if your checkers can shatter glass with their opponents and leave the crowd sore from the beating. Only Illinois has scored more than three touchdowns against Penn State and the Illini hung 42 on Missouri, 55 on Indiana and racked up more yardage in the Big House than any visiting team in the stadium's almost-as-old-as-Paterno existence. (Big Joe is one year older than the Big House and two years older than television.)

Their offense, meanwhile, is averaging just under 42 points a game, a touchdown more per game than either of Ohio State's teams that lost in the BCS title game, the two teams that haunt the Lions like the Bush presidency haunts John McCain.

And are the Nittany Lions so much worse than any other one-loss team? USC has the same marquee win as Penn State, albeit with a bucket load of style points. But the Trojans lost to Oregon State, a team that Penn State picked apart like a Thanksgiving turkey. Oklahoma is almost certainly a superior team, but they've already proved that without linebacker Ryan Reynolds, they can't beat Texas on a neutral field. The Ole Miss team that knocked off Florida is better than any team Penn State has played outside Ohio State, but the Rebels beat the Gators in the Swamp and, for the moment, at least created a fog of doubt around Urban Meyer's club. The Georgia Bulldogs have been as erratic as any Cincinnati Bengal behind the wheel after midnight, and their best win is over a fading LSU. TCU might be the nation's most underrated team, but after a sound beating by Oklahoma, it's hard to get the Horned Frogs in the championship picture.

But the marks against the Nittany Lions are so big Sarah Palin can probably see them from her house.

First, there's guilt by association. The Big Ten has bombed twice in the BCS title game and the nation is as eager for another sequel to the Big Ten-BCS horror flick as it is to White Chicks. And if the Big Ten seemed down in the past two years, it's been positively hide-your-money-in-the-mattress recessionary this year. The league doesn't have a non-conference win against a team currently ranked in the top 25 and its best win is Wisconsin's 13-10 squeaker over Fresno State. The Nittany Lions' own non-conference schedule included Oregon State, Temple, Syracuse, Coastal Carolina, and, reportedly, Joe the Plumber, teams that are 7-14 against Bowl Subdivision competition. And this is where college football should take lessons from its hardwood brother. The NCAA Tournament has become a yearly referendum on strength of schedule and mopey-faced Jim Boeheim interviews. With just two spots to pick instead of 34 at-large bids, the BCS committee should be even more selective than its March Madness counterparts.

Of course, Penn State's scheduling deficiency is largely due to the Big Ten's collapse, but that's all the more reason to step up to the plate in the non-conference schedule as a precautionary measure.

And there's plenty of reason to wonder exactly how good Penn State's team is. They've faced just one top-25 defense, Ohio State, which made their offense like they were trying to back out of a mud pit. (By comparison, eight SEC teams are in the top 25 in total defense). Clark threw for just 121 yards and spent most of the game running like he was trying to catch a cab, pursued by Marcus Freeman and Ohio State's surprisingly effective pass rush. Game-hero Devlin didn't officially throw a pass - his lone chuck resulted in a pass interference call. Evan Royster picked up just 77 yards rushing and his big play was a 10-yard grind. And were it not for a heck of a play by Mark Rubin to force a fumble, Penn State may very well have lost the battle of field goals.

Even Jim Harrick Jr. thinks Penn State's tests have been too easy. The only top-20 offense Penn State has faced is Illinois. The Big 12, by comparison, has five teams in the top nine and eight in the top 27.

Meanwhile, those one-loss SEC teams that the Lions are ahead of now are almost certain to build better resumes than a Penn State team with Iowa, Indiana and Michigan State left on the schedule. Either Georgia or Florida will pick up another top-10 win next weekend and a second if they win the SEC title. And no team in the nation has more momentum than Florida, which has scored more just seven fewer points in its last two wins than Ohio State has scored against Big Ten competition all season. Even Utah might have as good of an argument as Penn State. If the Utes finish undefeated, they'll have wins over Oregon State, TCU's top-ranked defense and a top-25 BYU team.

Of course, it may all be moot. John Daly has a better chance of walking a straight line after a night on the town than any team has of making a straight shot to the BCS title game. Two years ago, Southern Cal was all but a lock for a return to the BCS title game on the final weekend before UCLA stunned the Trojans 12-9 in the Coliseum. Last season it was West Virginia dreaming about crystal footballs when a loser of a Pitt squad popped a final weekend surprise.

Does Penn State deserve to be in the BCS title game? Let's just say the HD in Spread HD should probably stand for Highly Doubtful. But in a year in which only Texas, and a wobbly Alabama have separated themselves, the selection of whichever team gets in will probably have a lot in common with Penn State's win Saturday.

It'll be just plain ugly.

So, "Why can't Nittany Lions?"

The national media is in love with USC running back Joe McKnight. They love the highlight reel plays perfect for YouTube. They love the intriguing storyline of the Bayou kid who spurned instate power LSU. They love comparing him to Reggie Bush. But ask anyone around the Trojan football team and they’ll tell you that Stafon Johnson is the real deal.

Johnson, the junior from Dorsey High in the heart of Los Angeles, stole the show with 83 yards rushing and a couple of dynamic punt returns in USC’s 17-10 escape from the desert. After spending his first season in coach Pete Carroll’s doghouse with lackluster practice habits and only three carries burning a possible redshirt, everyone assumed that the former five-star prospect would transfer somewhere else. Instead, he rededicated himself and had program insiders raving.

Stuck in a timeshare with then-senior Chauncey Washington, C.J. Gable and McKnight, Johnson appeared to assert himself with 144 yards against Nebraska and another 122 versus Washington. However, a foot injury on his final carry against the Huskies limited him the rest of the year.

On Saturday night when the rest of the offense bogged down, Johnson stepped to the forefront. Carroll decided to roll with his unsung back and the powerhouse defense that has been nearly unstoppable since allowing 21 points in the first half to Oregon State.

Arizona, a team loaded with offensive weapons, managed just 188 yards and its only trip into the end zone came off a short field. After averaging more than 50 points per game at home, the Wildcats were totally stifled. Tight end Ron Gronkowski, perhaps the nation’s best kept secret, was held to two receptions for 12 yards.

Inheriting a program that was in complete turmoil after the disastrous John Mackovic era, Mike Stoops hasn't yet found a way to breakthrough against USC but is very close. A complete running back like Johnson, melded with Sonny Dykes' spread passing offense, might be the answer that finally takes Arizona to the Rose Bowl.

Johnson accounted for both Trojan touchdowns. He scored on a 2 yard run in the second quarter, then sent Wildcat safety Nate Ness head over heels on a blitz pickup allowing Mark Sanchez to make a 30 yard TD throw.

McKnight, the shining star, touched the ball just five times for 16 yards.

Too much has to happen for USC to get back to the top of the BCS pecking order, but with the continued development of Johnson and the ridiculously loaded defense, no one will want to play this team in a bowl game.

Penn State Has the Inside Track

No suspense when the Bowl Championship Series standings are released Sunday. Texas will remain No. 1, with Alabama holding on to the No. 2 spot and Penn State at No. 3, according to the BCS Guru. But the Nittany Lions put themselves in a favorable position with a 13-6 victory at Ohio State.
Penn State is idle next Saturday, then plays at Iowa the following week before closing the regular season with home games against Indiana and

Michigan State. Because there is no championship game in the Big Ten, the Nittany Lions would appear to have the easiest path to the BCS title game.
Texas' biggest tests are likely to come Saturday at Texas Tech and if the Longhorns make it that far, a likely rematch against Missouri in the Big 12 title game.
Alabama has three of its final four regular season games at home, but the road game is at Louisiana State in two weeks. Then would come a likely matchup against Florida or Georgia in the Southeastern Conference title game. The Gators and Bulldogs play Saturday in Jacksonville.
The rest of the BCS top 10: No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 5 USC, No. 6 Georgia, No. 7 Texas Tech, No. 8 Florida, No. 9 Utah and No. 10 Oklahoma State.
At No. 11 is Boise State, followed by No. 12 Ohio State, No. 13 Texas Christian, No. 14 Missouri and No. 15 Tulsa.

USC 17 Arizona 10...closer than it should have been

I am completely bewildered at what I saw tonight. I do not understand the play calling from Sarkisian.
I am pleased with the defense and the effort they put out.Form the outset they were not going to let Tuitama do what he normally does.
I am pleased with the running game..Stafon Johnson and Stanley Havili were the work horses tonight. I did not feel good about this game going in, there were just too many variables that were going to com into play. If Antolin stays in the game this game probably ends with a different outcome. There were some great plays made by the offense but it was the defense that made it happen tonight....again!
Mark Sanchez had a good game but not a great game. He made some plays but he made some stinkers too. He still trys way too hard to be the hero when just doing the basics is enough to win the game. This game was not going to be an easy one but I think the coaches, read Sark, made it tougher on the players with some of the bone head play calling I saw tonight. Sark needs to understand that this is big boy football and you need to stick with what works.
Anyway more tomorrow...feel free to vent here on our postgame thread.

This loss rests on Bollman’s shoulders, not yours. You can only work with what you’re given.
For those keeping score, that’s the second time this year a Bollman offense hasn’t scored a TD at home. (And had Herron not snuck one in against Ohio, it would have been three home games, out of six, without a TD.)
And it wasn’t for lack of effort, it was gameplan and scheme. Yeah, “Penn State has a good defense,” yet Coastal Carolina, Syracuse, and even UM scored more points against them, among a handful of other teams.
I don’t care what the optimists say about next year… no way this offense improves without a major change. Unless Beanie returns for his senior year, next season does not look promising, so long as the same tired coordinator is running the offense.
Time to stop screwing around.
Bollman, do what’s right and resign now.
Look at this picture. This is because of you.

When Terrelle Pryor left the state of Pennsylvania, the residents of Happy Valley might have been inclined to think that Joe Paterno lost his last best chance to reach the BCS Championship Game. Instead, Pryor made the freshman mistakes that have Penn State and its iconic coach three wins from a perfect regular season and a possible trip to Miami in January.

Texas and Alabama, if they win out, will prevent the Nittany Lions from a date with championship destiny, but if either the Longhorns or Crimson Tide crack in the next five weeks, the 81-year-old Paterno will bring his team to a title tilt in the first days of 2009. This amazing story might never find fruition, but after Penn State’s grinding 13-6 win over Ohio State, it’s now well within the realm of not only possibility, but probability. And as cruel as it might be to say so, the fact of the matter is that the night’s biggest play in this consequential collision in Columbus was turned in by the quarterback who hoped to lead Ohio State to the promised land.

Penn State now sits on the doorstep of another Big Ten championship because Pryor made the kind of mistake that will decide an old-fashioned smashmouth slugfest. On a night when the Lions and Buckeyes staged the kind of struggle that has defined Big Ten football for generations, all the old coaching clichés and Midwestern maxims about ball security and fundamental football came into play.

There’s really no other way of putting this nighttime fight into perspective: With the Lions and Buckeyes trading defensive stops, conservative offensive approaches, and virtually dead-even statistical profiles, only one play carried the weight of a season while bearing the sound of a thunderclap heard with disgust in Austin, Tuscaloosa, Norman, and L.A. That single snap could be easily identified by the tens of thousands of people who piled into Ohio Stadium, not to mention a nationwide television audience. Terrelle Pryor—hero of Ohio State’s comeback win against Wisconsin—now had to wear the goat horns after committing a freshman mistake he won’t soon forget.

Let the record show that with just under 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Jim Tressel’s Buckeyes—with a 6-3 lead and facing 3rd and 1 at midfield—had the Nittany Lions right where they wanted them. Blessed with a lead, field position, and a favorable down-and-distance situation in the midst of a defensive battle, the Buckeyes had all the game’s major indicators on their side of the divide. Slowing gaining momentum on the line of scrimmage, and armed with Beanie Wells to supplement Pryor’s own athleticism, the Buckeyes were steadily squeezing the Lions in the minimalist Big Ten style of old. Ohio State, by playing close to the (Mister Sweater) Vest, was winning in the manner cherished by the likes of Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler. As long as the Bucks held onto the ball and avoided a shocking slip-up, they’d have maintained a modest but meaningful advantage down the home stretch.

This backdrop to the game’s defining play only made its components that much more ironic and ultimately remarkable.

The snap which stunned the Scarlet and Gray, while sending shock waves through the 2008 college football season, was the most conservative football play imaginable, a quarterback sneak. No play involves a lower degree of risk, a lesser amount of uncertainty. The call was just like the gameday wardrobes of Tressel and Paterno, his counterpart: old-school, respectable, buttoned-down, no-frills, and entirely utilitarian in nature. The last thing anyone in the Ohio State camp expected on this sneak was the disastrous sequence that transpired.

Pryor did not make a mistake by trying to bounce his sneak wide in an improvisational act. Locked in a one-on-one matchup, Pryor had the leverage and the angle needed to lean forward for a first down. The problem was that the Buckeye quarterback carried the ball like a jug of milk, and with the ball representing a piece of low-hanging fruit, the Nittany Lions poked it loose and then pounced on the prize 12 yards behind the original line of scrimmage, at the Ohio State 38. After a pass interference penalty enabled the visitors—without injured starting quarterback Daryll Clark—to set up shop inside the Buckeye 15, PSU’s offensive line found the extra gear needed to nudge backup quarterback Pat Devlin to the goal line for the game’s game-winning—and only—touchdown.

Some football philosophers like to say that no one play ever decides a sixty-minute showdown, given the dozens of snaps that could all break in one direction or another. That view is backed by a considerable amount of solid logic, but there are some occasions when one snap simply looms larger than the rest of them. Saturday night in Columbus, Penn State managed to sneak to the top of the Big Ten—and to the forefront in the national championship chase—because Terrelle Pryor couldn’t protect the pill in a short-yardage situation. The Nittany Lions were good enough to make the Buckeyes pay, and now, they stand three wins from putting their proud papa, Joe Paterno, into one more national championship game.

After being denied national titles after undefeated seasons in the past, perhaps this fateful fumble in Ohio is the football gods’ way of paying back JoePa. As the season careens toward its conclusion over the next month of play, Penn State will do its very best to ensure that tonight’s gift is maximized to the fullest extent possible.

Flag on the Field to End the Tennessee - Alabama Game

ILLEGAL TEAM ON THE FIELD. PENALTY IS ACCEPTED. LOSS OF SEASON. REPLAY THE DIRGE.

Yikes.
I haven't had a chance to look at the stats yet, but I really don't need to. The game was relatively closely played in the first half, except that Alabama capitalized on their opportunities while Tennessee didn't. In the second half, Alabama absolutely owned the time of possession while Tennessee made a living out of 1-2-3-punt football.
A few observations:

Berry, Berry Everywhere. Ok, so we asked for Berry on offense and we got Berry on offense. Yippee. A screen pass to the one guy on the field who's guaranteed to be shadowed by at least two defenders. Yeah, that'll work. Oddly enough, this isn't a surpise; remember how excited we were when Warren was going to be on the team? He was going to be this dynamic force that opened up the offense and we ... wait for it ... threw a single screen pass to him in one of his first games with nary a second attempt. It's the UT way.
Still no INTs for Stephens. It's hard to find positives in a game like this, but this is one. There was only one questionable pass thrown by Nick, and he was wise enough to get rid of the ball on too-well-covered plays. He's got a great pass, and he's playing smart football. He's a bright spot and we shouldn't overlook that - especially since he didn't get any 1st-team time before the season.
Miscues. I can remember one deep pass - presumably to Warren - where Warren turned out while Stephens threw in. Another time, Stephens bootlegged to the right and zero receivers were on the right side of the field. The offense still isn't in sync. That's a problem.
Misdirection? It's not my offense and I am not presuming to know more about the strategy, but I don't understand why UT doesn't have any reverse, RB screens, end arounds, or other misdirection plays in the book. As the game went on, Alabama's defense got more aggressive and the offense had no way of making them pay for it.
Penalties. I need to see replays before I solidify opinions, but here's the initial take. A few penalties were bogus. A few were valid. All penalties were either drive-killers (our offense) or drive-sustainers (our defense). By now, UT has a reputation for dumb penalties and I think the refs are expecting them. It sure felt like that, and UT did deliver. Still, the bad call were not the reason UT lost. They made things worse, but there were far greater problems.

That's about all. Surprisingly, I had fun. As for the crowd, I'll note my experience.
Pregame
The UT fans were relatively subdued. On the way to campus, I'd hear the occasional "Roll, Tide!" out of a car window but never any pro-UT cheers. During the Vol Walk, the cheering was meh. Still, I never heard any uber-arrogant swagger (I hate that term, btw) from the UA fans pregame, either. It seemed that UT was worried, but UA was as well.
During Game
During the first half, UT had great crowd noise and participation. That was as loud as any Neyland game I've been in (which hasn't been too many, but still). The energy was there, and the team fed off of it. But when the offense stalled quickly in to start the second half, the dread crept in and the crowd began to fade. It was downhill from there.
The UA crowd was energetic, as a travelling UA crowd tends to be. But they never seemed certain of the outcome until 22-3. That was the point where they really started to liven up and accept the inevitable. So again, there's that. (BTW, UT fans were bailing long before then. The trip home was quite easy and pleasant. Absolutely no traffic for me and my super-secret route. Still not telling.)
Post Game
After the game, the UT fans seemed to act like the outcome was expected. Uhhh, that's a bad reaction to have. Shock and confusion would have been much better. The UA fans weren't obnoxious, though. They played their Lynyrd on their car stereos and yelled their chants, sure, but they weren't in anybody's face about it. I actually had some nice conversations and well wishes on the way out, actually. And the UA guy who was explaining the rivalry on the way out to his friend put it best - something like this:

It's never that both teams are great or that both teams suck; it's that only one of the two teams sucks. That's the rut we're stuck in right now.

I really can't add anything to that. Bingo.

This was no letdown by No. 1. This was Texas against maybe the most complete offense in college football, hanging on for dear life in the football version of Rock-Em-Sock-Em-Robots. The offense bailed out the defense for three quarters, and then in true Lunchpail Longhorns' fashion, the defense rose up to help the offense. As a result, Texas and Texas Tech will both be 8-0 in Lubbock next week.

I don’t have a strong opinion on Sunday’s college game. I think the numbers are about right, but I lean to the favorite and the OVER, as you should in all Tulsa games.
For the weeknight games, I came up with:

Penn State 13, Ohio State 6. Well, that was more like your grandfather's Big Ten than the electric light show promised by athletic quarterbacks operating out of the spread. Penn State will take it. Up until Pat Devlin lunged for the only touchdown with about six minutes to play, Ohio State would have taken it, too. A tough road win is a tough road win, and PSU comes out the other side looking even feistier on defense, with only Iowa, Indiana and Michigan State between it and 12-0.
As Brent Musburger pointed out late in the the game, there were two big goose eggs for the Lions: zero penalties and, more importantly, zero turnovers. Ohio State's best starting position of the night was its own 39, and when the ball squirted out of Terrelle Pryor's hands on third and short at midfield, with the Buckeyes up 6-3 and already in clock-killing mode, Penn State took advantage of the only major mistake and the only good field position of the night to drive 38 yards for the winning touchdown -- and a good chunk of that came via another OSU mistake, a pass interference penalty for the full 15 yards. Between Wells and Terrelle Pryor, the only Buckeyes to log carries, Ohio State averaged two yards per carry with a long run of nine. You know, disciplined defense, taking care of the ball, punting, all that rot. Even in HD, sometimes it works.
I may be less bothered by the Lions' "style points," or lack thereof, for the same reason it doesn't bother me that Alabama didn't blow Kentucky or Ole Miss out of the stadium. For one, Penn State earned plenty of style points in crushing Oregon State and Wisconsin and convincingly beating Illinois and Michigan. The tempo of tonight's game didn't lend itself to big scoring -- Pryor clearly was not going to hurt Penn State downfield, even when he had guys open, and there was no reason to give him a chance by making a mistake against the Buckeye defense -- and the team that can hang in a slugfest and let its defense carry it through a big game on the road should be able to hang tough with anyone. That's the theory, at least, and assuming either Texas or Alabama has a loss in front of it down the stretches, we're only three more Lion wins (and probably a few creepy, quasi-eulogies to poor Joe Paterno) from testing it with a championship on the line.

but I was at the game yesterday and my eyes sure did not see a Cincinatti team that I thought was any good. I think Cinci is going to have to be catching some points there...

And I think UConn is a bigger home dog than 2.5 vs. WVU. At least 3.5 IMO.

UVA has to be favored over Miami at home, right?

GTech-FSU is a huge game.

GTech-FSU is a huge game.

They were awful yesterday, no doubt about it. 6 turnovers and they refused to run even when they had a little success in that area. Still, USF was -4/4.5 @ Louisville and lost. Cincinnati is better then Lousiville (in my estimation, some may disagree), and they get a Thursday nighter at home. I could see USF being favored, but by -2.5 at most IMO.

Maybe on the WVU, good spot for UConn though. The 2.5 is assuming that Frazer will play.

VA was +14 at GT last week. Not sure if they deserve to be favorites at home, but I think that's a bit too big of a swing even given their results last week.

Does anyone seriously think that PSU can compete in the national title game with the likes of texas or alabama?

I seriously think it'd be another rout like OSU, if the PSU offense can only put up 13 points against OSU's defense, where the past couple seasons in january i think we all know what has happened to the OSU defense. Also, Darryl Clark does not look like the same QB when he is playing against top tier talent, he is missing open recievers by a mile.

i think the advantage that the big ten teams have in not playing in a conference title game also hurts them when it comes time for the bcs title game. pennst will have a lifetime off between last game of year and bcs title game. probably lose to iowa anyway.

if penn st played texas or bama now they would certainly be competitive i think .... but i would make both of those squads favorites on a neutral.

PSU would match up better with Bama than they would with Texas but Bama isn't going to win the SEC. UF would smoak the shit out of PSU but PSU is going to get to go to the NC and the B10 will be smacked for the 3rd yr in a row, this time by the B12

god point Husky, look at what Baylor did this year to UConn. The Huskies have been very good against average rush offenses but not great rush offenses as Louisville put over 200 on them as well. Definately have seen the edges exposed, and the speed WVU brings, if Baylor read option handoff any indication, tough sledding for Huskies. I think they far better against traditional.

----Worry about taking WVU though because UConn will run on them as well and move it.

This a horrible spot for Utah. New Mexico ALWAYS gives Utah fits and this is their last home game. Line is short for a reason here. It's to short for me to take the Lobos, but it definitely reeks as a trap line.

Agreed, and I hate moderate road favs this late in the season. Still, really like how Utah matches up and they know they have to win out regardless of who they are playing.

Way too short for me to ignore.
