2 Parlays August 6: Oakland Has Its 'A' Game Ready

Kansas City Royals vs. Philadelphia Phillies Sunday, August 6, 2023 at 1:35 p.m. ET at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia & Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Milwaukee Brewers Sunday, August 6, 2023 at 2:10 p.m. ET at American Family Field in Milwaukee

  • Zack Greinke is an auto-fade on the road, although his team's lineup matches up well against Walker given its current form
  • Johan Oviedo enjoys strong form and matchup potential
  • Brandon Woodruff has a solid recent history against Pittsburgh

Who Starts for Kansas City?

Zack Greinke starts for the Royals today.

When Greinke pitches on the road, you have to wager on his opponent or play the "over."

Whereas his ERA is 3.57 at home, it is 7.40 on the road.

Even weak lineups victimize him on the road.

For example, he allowed five earned runs in 4.1 innings in Miami and seven earned runs in 3.2 innings in Minnesota, even though these teams rank 25th and 17th, respectively, in runs per game.

Greinke's Form

Regardless of where he's pitching, Greinke in especially fade-worthy now because of his current form.

His last start creates a misleadingly positive impression of him because, while he allowed one run, he barely induced soft contact but was fortunate to yield a low .214 BABIP (batting average of balls in play).

His 4.67 FIP in that start reflects how poorly he actually performed individually.

This FIP is consistent with his extensive struggles that have persisted even against bottom-ranking lineups.

Royals' Lineup

Taijuan Walker, today's starter for Philadelphia, is going to struggle against an in-form Royals lineup.

Since July 28, the Royals have emerged as a constant threat to score six or more runs.

Since that date, they rank fourth in slugging .606 against Walker's favorite pitches from righties.

Full-Game

Because Greinke gets crushed in the sixth inning and because Kansas City owns one of the worst bullpens in terms of ERA, let's make the "over" play a full-game one.

Who Starts for the Pirates?

Pittsburgh starts Johan Oviedo today.

Oviedo's current form is strong, which makes him reliable now.

He has allowed one earned run in three of his last four starts.

Oviedo's Arsenal

Oviedo throws a slider, fastball, curveball, sinker, and changeup.

In his one bad recent start, he struggled against an Angels team that ranks fourth against his pitches from righties.

Today, though, Oviedo gets to face a Milwaukee lineup that ranks 26th with a .385 slugging rate against his pitches from righties.

Who Starts for Milwaukee?

Brandon Woodruff starts for the Brewers today.

Woodruff looked good in his rehab assignments and is ready to go.

He is fit to extend his historic success against the PIrates: last year, he yielded an FIP of 1.61 or better in his first four starts against them.

This year's Pittsburgh team still matches up poorly with him, slugging .398 against his pitches from righties.

Seattle Mariners vs. Los Angeles Angels Sunday, August 6, 2023 at 4:07 p.m. ET at Angel Stadium in Anaheim

  • Bryce Miller's form is awful
  • Chase Silseth is thriving in the Angels' starting rotation
  • Alex Cobb is weak in rematch situations while Luis Medina has improved significantly.

Who Starts for the Mariners?

Bryce Miller starts for Seattle today.

Miller enters today's game in terrible form.

He has allowed six earned runs in both of his last two starts, which took place at home against Boston and in Minnesota, respectively.

As part of his two-game rough stretch, he has allowed a combined total of six earned runs.

Moreover, he's inducing less soft contact than usual and is doing an awful job of minimizing hard contact.

His form is particularly concerning because of his last start.

Boston had failed to exceed three runs in four straight tries before turning things around against Miller.

Besides the fact that the Angels have still been scoring runs, Miller's last start refutes the basis for any skepticism that L.A.'s current losing streak might stimulate.

Who Starts for the Angels?

Chase Silseth makes his third straight start for the Angels.

Apparently, Silseth is a stronger fit for his team's starting rotation than for its bullpen.

In his last two outings, he allowed one run in 5.2 innings against the Yankees before allowing one run in five innings in Atlanta.

Impressively, he struck out ten Yankees batters.

Silseth's Arsenal

Silseth has the stuff to thrive as a starter even against the likes of Atlanta.

He relies heavily on a fastball that carries a lot of spin, which makes it appear to rise when he elevates it.

His next-most frequent pitches are even more effective: opponents hit .080 against his slider and .190 against his cutter.

Silseth's superior form suggests that he will outduel Miller.

Who Starts for San Francisco?

Alex Cobb starts for the Giants today.

Cobb is worth going against because he just saw the A's on July 25, and he is reliably worse in rematch situations.

For example, the Brewers accrued seven runs in their rematch with Cobb after getting shut out in their first meeting.

He likewise regressed blatantly in rematches against St. Louis and Arizona.

Who Starts for the A's?

Luis Medina starts for Oakland today.

He enters today's game in strong form, having allowed a combined total of three runs in his last three games, despite facing tougher matchups than the one he'll face today.

Conversely, the Giants enter today's contest having reached four runs one time in its last eight games.
