2 Parlays July 9: Expect Pitching Duels From Coast to Coast

Chicago Cubs vs. New York Yankees
Sunday, July 9, 2023 at 1:35 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium in Bronx, New York & Colorado Rockies vs. San Francisco Giants Sunday, July 9, 2023 at 4:05 p.m. ET at Oracle Park in San Francisco

  • Kyle Hendricks and Domingo German have very favorable matchups today
  • Kyle Freeland loves pitching in San Francisco
  • The Giants don't hit lefties well, and the Rockies are especially unreliable against the likes of Logan Webb outside of Coors Field

Who Starts for the Cubs?

Kyle Hendricks starts for Chicago.

While Hendricks' 2.64 ERA is certainly pretty, it looks even more attractive when you consider his start to the season.

Whereas his ERA in April was 3.86, it was 2.51 in May and 1.50 in July.

In each of the latter months, he yielded a BA below .200.

While he's also thrived against tough teams like Tampa Bay, he's been most reliable against weaker lineups.

He has faced two bottom-ten lineups, Pittsburgh and Milwaukee.

In both of those starts, he yielded one earned run in six or 6.1 innings.

Hendricks vs. Yankees Batters

Hendricks' dominance over weaker lineups is relevant to this game because the Yankees are awful without superstar Aaron Judge, and they match up poorly against Hendricks without him.

Since Judge's absence, New York ranks 29th with a .344 slugging rate against Hendricks' pitches from righties.

Who Starts for the Yankees?

Domingo German starts for New York today.

German is coming off a bad-luck outing.

In that start, he did a great job of inducing soft contact and an even better job of avoiding hard contact.

Nevertheless. he was unfortunate to yield a .563 BABIP (batting average of balls in play) and a correspondingly high ERA.

His 0.98 FIP in that start conveys how well he actually performed individually, which indicates that his form remains strong after pitching a perfect game two starts ago.

German vs. Cubs' Batters

German's outlook today is particularly solid because he matches up well against the Cubs.

They rank 27th with a .374 slugging rate against his pitches from righties.

Who Starts for Colorado?

Kyle Freeland starts for the Rockies.

It's hard to fault Freeland for his recent starts: they all took place against teams that rank top-11 in slugging against lefties.

Two of those starts took place in the most hitters-friendly ballpark, Coors Field.

Today's Start

Today's start will be different in two key respects.

One, it takes place in San Francisco's Oracle Park, where Freeland boasts a 2.72 ERA in seven career starts.

Two, the Giants are weak against left-handed pitching.

They rank 22nd with a .396 slugging rate against Freeland's pitches from lefties.

Who Starts for the Giants?

Logan Webb starts for San Francisco today.

His outlook today is solid because, outside of Coors Field, the Rockies slug .382 against his pitches from righties.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Miami Marlins
Sunday, July 9, 2023 at 1:40 p.m. ET at loanDepot park in Miami &
Kansas City Royals vs. Cleveland Guardians
Sunday, July 9, 2023 at 1:40 p.m. ET at Progressive Field in Cleveland

  • Aaron Nola has a great history in Miami and against Marlins' batters
  • Philadelphia's lineup will finally give Jesus Luzardo a challenge
  • Kansas City can't win a game right now, and Shane Bieber can't lose against Kansas City

Who Starts for Philadelphia?

Aaron Nola starts for the Marlins today.

In Nola's last start, he limited Tampa Bay to one earned run in 7.1 innings.

This start is representative of Nola's career-long prowess in the month of July.

As measured by ERA, this month is the time of the year in which Nola attains his best form.

Nola vs. Marlin Batters

Besides loving July, Nola loves the Marlins' ballpark.

At this venue, he boasts a 2.69 ERA in ten career starts.

He has sustained his success in Miami by dominating Marlins' batters.

In around 100 combined at-bats, they've mustered only four extra-base hits against him.

Miami's batters can't hit him, because they match up poorly against him.

They rank 26th with a .399 slugging rate against his pitches from righties.

Who Starts for Miami?

Jesus Luzardo starts for the Marlins today.

Luzardo has benefitted in his most recent starts from facing teams that match up poorly against him.

Today's start will be different because the Phillies rank eighth with a .439 slugging rate against his pitches from lefties.

The Spot

Team-wise, Philadelphia is in a great spot today after losing yesterday's game.

The Phillies have won their last seven games that directly followed a loss.

Who Starts for Cleveland?

Shane Bieber starts for the Guardians today.

Bieber has feasted on bottom-feeder competition.

He has allowed a combined total of three runs in three starts against Oakland, Detroit, and Kansas City, which are the teams that rank bottom-three in runs per game.

His stuff is certainly good enough to enable him reliably to handle weak competition.

For example, his fastball ranks in the 74th percentile in spin and boasts a lot of horizontal movement.

Moreover, he effectively commands this pitch in different parts of the strike zone.

But his slider and curveball are even more effective: the former pitch yields a .157 BA while the ladder yields a .197 BA.

He has too many weapons for the Royals today.

Bieber's History

Bieber's success against the Royals is career-long.

He is 6-0 with a 2.80 ERA in 14 career starts against the Royals.

Fade the Royals

Kansas City is suffering a six-game losing streak.

This team has lost every game on its current road stand.

Even if its starter Ryan Yarbrough performs well, he rarely lasts many innings, and the Royals' bullpen is second-to-last in ERA.

Doubts: I wish Nola were coming off a bad start. Luzardo‘s form has been sick. I kinda actually like Yarbrough. Seriously considered 1H under in Cleveland but couldn’t anyhow find a 1H total released before the article submission deadline. Freeland‘s form has been awful.

But I answered these doubts in my write-ups.

I didn’t even realize you were thinking pretty much same thing on that cubs/yanks game when I starting asking bout it, just reading this now, lol.

The 1st 5 total felt unusually high for a 8.5 game total in ny. Not sure why but I prefer Ff unders most the time anyways so I snatched that u5.
