2 Parlays July 2: Great Pitchers Are Beautifully Cheap Today

Boston Red Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays
Sunday, July 2, 2023 at 1:37 p.m. ET at Rogers Centre in Toronto & New York Yankees vs. St. Louis Cardinals Sunday July 2, 2023 at 2:15 p.m. ET at Busch Stadium in St. Louis

  • Kevin Gausman is in a uniquely strong spot.
  • Garrett Whitlock matches up well against the Blue Jays.
  • Gerrit Cole is cheap to back especially with the Yankees ready to pounce on another lefty.

Who Starts for Toronto?

Kevin Gausman starts for Toronto today.

Already a strong "under" pitcher, Gausman finds himself in a uniquely strong spot after collecting the loss in his last start.

Gausman tends to buckle down after a loss.

Before his most recent start, Gausman had three losses.

After each start in which he collected the loss, he allowed zero runs.

Those three starts took place in Kansas City, in Yankee Stadium when the Yanks had superstar Aaron Judge, and in Philadelphia.

In those three starts, he allowed a combined total of ten hits and accrued 26 strikeouts to two walks. Simply put: he dominated.

Skeptics will point out that Gausman was awful in his start in Boston.

But it's different in Toronto: last year at the Blue Jays' venue, he allowed two runs in 16 innings against Boston.

Who Starts for Boston?

Garrett Whitlock starts for the Red Sox.

Whitlock features three pitches: a sinker, changeup, and sweeper.

He does a great job of avoiding walks and getting batters to chase his pitches.

His outlook today is particularly strong because the Blue Jays rank 20th in slugging .382 against his pitches from righties.

Who Starts for the Yankees?

Gerrit Cole starts for New York today.

Cole features a fastball, slider, curveball, and changeup.

The Cardinals rank just above average in slugging against these pitches from righties.

However, "just above average" is tantamount to "terrible" when Cole is the guy throwing these pitches.

His pitches are exceptional.

For example, his fastball places in 91st percentile in velocity and in the 89th percentile in spin.

These numbers indicate that batters struggle to keep up with and track the location of this pitch.

His slider, which yields a .310 slugging rate, is even more effective than his fastball.

Cole has allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of his last five starts, with one of those coming against a Dodger lineup that matches up far better against his pitches from righties than St. Louis does.

Who Starts for the Cardinals?

Jordan Montgomery starts for St. Louis.

Montgomery is a lefty who throws a sinker, changeup, curveball, and fastball.

Missing Aaron Judge is no problem for the Yankees today.

Since his absence, they rank second with a .535 slugging rate against their former teammate's pitches from lefties.

Cleveland Guardians vs. Chicago Cubs
Sunday, July 2, 2023 at 2:20 p.m. ET at Wrigley Field in Chicago & Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Los Angeles Angels at 4:07 p.m. ET at Angel Stadium in Anaheim

  • Aaron Civale matches up strongly against the Cubs, and he's better on the road than at home, anyways
  • Jameson Taillon is consistently awful
  • Zac Gallen is not his reputedly strong self on the road, whereas Reid Detmers has been dominant everywhere

Who Starts for Cleveland?

Aaron Civale starts for the Guardians today.

Throughout his career and this season as well, Civale is stronger outside of Cleveland.

While the Guardians have lost in two of his three road starts, this is not Civale's fault.

The "under" is 3-0 in his road starts because his counterparts have been strong: in those three starts, Logan Gilbert pitched for Cleveland's opponent and, in the other two starts, two guys with sub-three ERAs pitched for Cleveland's respective opponents.

Civale, however, is so much better than his counterpart today.

Civale vs. Cubs Batters

Civale's outlook today is particularly strong because he matches up well against Cubs batters.

He features a cutter, curveball, sinker, fastball, and slider.

Chicago ranks 26th in slugging .388 against these pitches from righties.

Who Starts for the Cubs?

Jameson Taillon starts for Chicago today.

Wherever and against whomever, Taillon is consistently awful.

Taillon has allowed at least four earned runs in three of his last four starts and in seven of his last nine starts.

In the process, he's struggled even against teams that, on paper, match up poorly against him in that they don't hit his pitches from righties well.

Who Starts for Arizona?

Zac Gallen starts for the Diamondbacks today.

Don't let Gallen's ERA scare you from going against him.

This statistic masks the fact that there are two versions of Gallen: the one who yields a 1.50 ERA at home and the one who yields a 5.08 ERA away from the Diamondback faithful.

Gallen vs. Angels' Lineup

Gallen's vulnerability on the road will be conspicuous today because the Angels match up superbly against him.

He throws a fastball, curveball, cutter, and changeup.

L.A. ranks second in slugging .485 against his pitches from righties.

Who Starts for the Angels?

Reid Detmers starts for the Angels today.

Detmers enters today's game in great form: he has allowed a combined total of three earned runs in his last four starts.

His success at home is rather consistent with his season-long preference of pitching in Anaheim where his ERA is almost 1.00 lower than his road ERA.

Detmers' most recent starts are particularly impressive because his victims have included the mighty Dodgers and Rangers.
