Starbury Leaves Knicks

Stephon Marbury left the Knicks Tuesday morning upset about his role on the team, heading home to Phoenix.
He skipped the morning shootaround and it appears he'll miss tonight's game. "We hope he's at the game," coach Isiah Thomas said. "If not, make no mistake about it, we do want him as a member of this basketball team. He is welcome back, and we want him as a member of this team." The abrupt departure could spell the end of his Knicks career. Nate Robinson will benefit.

Anyone else thinking of a play on the SUNS tonight??

I love how Thomas says he wants him to be part of the team. Glad he does because it's obvious the owner doesn't.

The customary postgame meeting between Garden chairman James Dolan and Isiah Thomas seemed to go on longer than usual late Sunday night in New York. Those sit-downs could be potentially harmful to a head coach. But in this instance, the discussion between Dolan and Isiah Thomas could mean the beginning of the end of Stephon Marbury.
A high-ranking team official told the Daily News that Thomas and Dolan have been in talks in recent days concerning Marbury's future. Knicks brass is considering what options it has to reduce Marbury's role or get rid of him entirely.
A trade is unlikely because Marbury, the team's controversial point guard, is scheduled to earn $42 million over the next two seasons. Dolan's and Thomas' history suggests that they would not rule out negotiating a buyout for Marbury, who then would become a free agent. At the very least, Marbury's minutes could be reduced substantially for as long as he remains on the team.
The Knicks are 2-3 entering tonight's game in Phoenix. Marbury, 30, made the trip west but there is some uncertainty whether he will even play. The Knicks traveled to Phoenix yesterday afternoon and were not available for comment. Attempts to reach Thomas at the team hotel were unsuccessful.
Marbury accepted responsibility for Sunday's loss to Miami after he threw away a pass in the final minute and allowed Heat guard Jason Williams to get open and hit the go-ahead jumper.
However, blaming Marbury for the Knicks' record is unfair, especially since Jamal Crawford had a similarly brutal turnover and has struggled defensively. The same is true of Eddy Curry, who was a nonfactor in back-to-back performances against Orlando's Dwight Howard and Miami's Shaquille O'Neal.
Perhaps Marbury is being set up as the scapegoat in the aftermath of the Anucha Browne Sanders sexual harassment trial. Marbury testified that he once referred to Sanders as a "bitch." It was also revealed during the trial that Marbury, a married father, had an affair with a Garden employee who was a public relations intern at the time.
Also, Marbury made several infamous and bizarre television appearances over the summer that embarrassed the organization. Marbury has maintained a low profile since the start of training camp and has even attempted to extend olive branches to those members of the media that he has feuded with for the past several years.
A person close to Marbury says he is beaten down emotionally from everything that transpired over the summer and through the Sanders trial and that deep down he would welcome a change of scenery. In five games, Marbury is averaging 15.2 points and 6.8 assists. Now in his 12th season, Marbury has averaged 19.8 points and 7.9 assists over his career with four different teams.
Marbury was, of course, Thomas' first blockbuster acquisition. The January 2004 trade was celebrated because it meant that Marbury, the Brooklyn legend, would be returning home. But Marbury quickly alienated teammates, coaches and the media with his moody behavior. He was involved in a memorable altercation with former teammate Kurt Thomas and later with current teammate Quentin Richardson. Both players wanted to fight Marbury.
Through it all, including the losing seasons and zero playoffs wins, Isiah Thomas stood firmly behind Marbury and exiled anyone that had a problem with his guard - including Kurt Thomas, Shandon Anderson, Tim Thomas, Keith Van Horn and Dikembe Mutombo.
Marbury's career in New York, which seemed so promising, appears to be headed for an ugly divorce. If the Knicks were to sever ties with Marbury, it is uncertain how it would impact Thomas' future.

this kind of event could galvize the Knicks though. Kinda make it a "Lets show them we don't need Starbury" type of effort. Could happen.

They dont need that clown. However, they dont really have a pg.. nate isnt one. Jamal definitely isnt.

LMAO that any team would trade for that contract.

although a Suns 1st Half -7 might be a good look

What are the rules with picking up players that get bought out?? They can negotiate an entirely new contract with a team during the same season?? If so, the Hawks have got to try and get him to run their offense, Law isn't ready yet and everyone else sucks. With a cheap salary, and being from GT, he might actually work hard to regain respect. Or he'll just quit and go to Italy.

Well, guys like Cwebb and Finley still making money with old teams..Allan Houston as well and if you play for another team get extra money..usually much smaller obviously

Dont think about bringing his punk ass to Atlanta. Send him to Rucker Park with his cousin bassy

So there are no restrictions on it? I'm pretty confident he would go to ATL, he and JJ played together in Phoenix. If Johnson liked playing with him, then they pretty much have to get him since JJ has been bitching about needing a veteran presence all season. I probably shouldn't be too excited about getting Stephon Marbury though.

I've heard lots of rumors about Snow getting bought out and heading to ATL. I think he might fit better there than Starbury.

What is marbury pissed about? does he want MORE opportunities to lose games in the last minute for the Knicks?

I distinctly remember a last minute shot that missed the rim completely but sure did clobber the backboard......thought it was him that shot it.

:)

I think he'd definitely fit in better personality wise, and would be a nice teacher for Law, but Snow definitely wouldn't be any better than what they've got at running the offense. The Hawks want to be a running team, but they can't dictate tempo, Marbury will at least be able to push the game to a faster pace. I don't want them to bring in Snow, it'll just cause more problems with the PG rotation, but if you bring in Marbury, you know that it's gonna be him starting and Law backing up. So there can finally be a little bit of continuity.

Marbury had bolted in a huff, flying for home amid an apparent feud with Thomas over his starting role, leaving his future as a Knick in serious doubt.
Marbury landed in New York about 4 p.m. and said in the message to The Post, "I have one thing to say, and that's I got permission to leave. I would never leave my team on my own. What I’m telling you is that I got permission to leave from Isiah. He said I could go home. God bless. Peace be with you."
Marbury added he was not expecting to join the team in Los Angeles tomorrow night.
"No, I'm not coming to LA as of now," he said.

Mardy Collins will be starting at PG tonight rather than Nate Robinson. I don't know a ton about Collins, but he seems like a rather big PG. I'm guessing he won't push the pace like Nate or Starbury do.

Not sure how accurate this is

TEAM TURMOIL IN FULL EFFECT:

According to my sources:

On the way to phoenix, IT informed Marbs that he was benching him for mardy.

Marbs told IT he cant do that and that if he did, he had so much dirt on IT that it would ruin his career. They began to argue and it escalated into a full on brawl on the airplane. Marbury after it was broken up said he was outta here and said he was going back to NY (reason he is reportedly AWOL).

November 14, 2007 -- According to an e-mail to The Post from Stephon Marbury this morning, the Knicks' AWOL point guard is on his way to Los Angeles to join the Knicks for tonight's game against the Clippers.
The Knicks have fined Marbury almost $200,000 for bolting from the team Tuesday, though Marbury claimed he had permission to return to New York.
The Knicks would not confirm Marbury was headed to rejoin the team.

Marbury's tumultuous Knicks career is in jeopardy after the Knicks point guard left Phoenix in a huff yesterday morning and flew home following a wild argument in the hotel with Isiah Thomas over his starting role.
A source said Marbury and Thomas got into a heated argument Monday night shortly after flying to Arizona. Thomas told Marbury he was considering taking his starting job away and lessening his minutes and they disagreed on Marbury's level of play in the first five games.
In a series of text messages to The Post late yesterday afternoon after landing in New York, Marbury had claimed he wasn't headed back anytime soon. Marbury missed last night's 113-102 loss to the Suns.
Marbury told The Post in the messages that Thomas gave him permission to skip out.
"I have one thing to say, and that's I got permission to leave," Marbury claimed in the message. "I would never leave my team on my own. What I'm telling you is that I got permission to leave from Isiah. He said I could go home. God bless. Peace be with you." Thomas, asked if he gave Marbury permission to leave, didn't deny it, saying, "The conversations we had in-house, we'll try to keep it there."
