Some Crazy Shit Happened Saturday!!!

s--k

Goodbye to Romance College Football
Wow, every Saturday has lots of comebacks, blowouts, upsets, late covers, back doors, coaching confusion, but yesterday seemed especially crazy!

Rutgers QB Laviano bests Beathard in compl %, yards, QBR and Rutgers running numbers even with Iowa (although Iowa had better ypc). Rutgers had 1st and 10 at Iowa 12 on their first drive...but eventually punted! Iowa fails on a 4th down att from Rut 10 and next drive Rut fails on 4th down from Iowa 3. Key Rut 4th qrt fumble sets Iowa up for a 1 play 26y TD drive for the 14-7 lead. Rutger's final drive gets to Iowa 17, failed on 4th and 2, Iowa runs out the clock.

Iowa State scored more pts vs SJ ST (44) than they had in their previous three games (43).

Charlotte (spread ranging from +29-24) trailing 20-48 had a 1st-and-goal at Temple 9 on final possession, but failed to score. While Temple did kick a couple short FGs after good drives, they also had a 1p 13y TD drive following Phillips fumble. Olson was a brutal 17 of 42 passing and Phillips had 116 rushing, but 66 on 1 big run and just 48y on his other 15 carries.

Unbelievable the domination and incompetency on display in East Lansing! Badgers held 176-121 yard edge and 13-6 1st half lead. MSU's first three drives of the 2nd half resulted in 2 net yards (Scott fumble ret for TD and dropped punt snap) leading to Badgers getting a quick 17 pts for a 30-6 lead entering the 4th qrt. 153 of MSU's 325 yards came in the 4th qrt.

Nevada was covering from the start until 58:33 game time when Purdue hit a wide open medium pass to the TE which he ran 50+y for the Purdue covering TD. Nevada got to the Purdue 18 where they ran out of time. Earlier Nev failed to get any points out of a 1st down at Pur 3. Purdue did throw INT at the Nev 4 and fumble inside the Nev 10. Purdue did have 6.2 to 3.8 ypp edge.

Virginia led 28-0, but CMU tied it 28 all in the 4th while Bronco closed his eyes and paced up and down the sideline like he was praying to Joseph Smith. UVA hit some huge plays to pull away 49-35.

VT O would start three-and-out on their first three possessions before waking up. They got on the board early with a punt ret TD.

Syracuse led 14-0, but UConn would tie at 14 all and later 17 all. Cuse got a INT for TD, on the next drive UConn failed on a 4th and goal from the 2 and Cuse would ice it with a drive starting at their own 1 for a TD and 14 pt win. Orange missed 2 FGs on the day.

PSU-Michigan went 'over' thanks to a late PSU INT and Mich TD with 2:00 left. 21 pts were scored in the 4th qrt.

Indiana had a 611-352 yard edge, but lost 28-33 to the now 4-0 Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Early IND had a ball off recievers hands INT'd in the EZ and then later WF got a INT ret for TD. IND also had a FG blk'd from the 19 after a 70y drive. Lagow for INT threw 5 INTs.

UMass had leads of 7-3, 7-6, 14-6, 14-13, 21-20 before Miss ST would reel off 3 straight TDs (one pick six).

Two end of half snaps with :01 left with 2 different results.

BYU was driving as time was ticking down 2nd qrt, when in the RZ, BYU WR didn't go out of bounds with about :14 left and BYU scrambled to the line for the snap where they planned to spike the ball. They appeard to snap and spike with :00 on the clock. It went to replay and BYU was awarded :01 left and they kicked a FG to only trail 13-21. It looked extremely close, if there would've been a tenth of a second on the game clock, they may have got the snap off with something like :012 and spiked the ball with something like :005.

Hill threw 3 costly INTs, 1 returned for TD and the last ended the game when BYU was in getting in position to tie or possibly win.

Crazy play in the game...after Hill's 2nd INT with 2:30 left and WVU up by 3, 1st-and-goal at the BYU 4, Howard looked to audible and the center snapped the ball where BYU fell on it avoiding what would surely be a forthcoming WVU TD and gave them new life. BYU went 70y in 1-1/2 minutes, but Hill took a shot at the EZ where the ball went off of the receivers arms and a second WVU DB behind the play picked it off for the win.

I will add more later, have to get ready for NFL

How could you leave off the Pac12 games where there were shenanigans in just about every one towards the number?

UCLA led 13-9 (getting 3 and 3.5 for most of their backers) with 29 seconds left. Heading into the drive the Stanford offense had 71 total passing yards and they would throw for 72 on that drive. Anyway, Stanford scores the TD .... then on the following series, UCLA QB is hit and fumbles on the last play of the game and a Stanford defensive lineman picks it up and rumbles 42 yards for a TD. Reminds one of the Belk bowl from a few years back.

California scores a backdoor cover late in the game. Trailing 44-41 their backers just need Arizona State to recover the onside kick or avoid a pick six/scoop and score late if Cal recovers the onside kick ... oh wait!! there is a third way they could lose ... the onside kick could take a perfect bounce and ASU returns it for a TD and the cover !!!!! Unreal.

oregon State boise state - All under backers need is for there to not be 2 TD's in the last four minutes of the game. Should be in good shape with oregon state deep in their own end down 14. Boise gets a defensive score and on the following kickoff, oregon state returns it for a TD.

Oklahoma state trails baylor by 4 midway fourth quarter with first and ten at baylor 14. justice hill runs 13 yards to the 1 where he fumbles. Baylor goes 99 yards for the covering td converting on third and goal from the 15 with okie state defending the ten yard line instead of the goal line. Then with 13 seconds remaining and down 11 the cowboys spike the ball in the Baylor red zone. For some reason, unknown to logical man, gundy does not send out the kicker but instead runs another meaningless play and the qb is sacked and the game ends. Gundy basically quit when there was a chance to win and he should have known there was a chance to win given what happened against cmich.

How about this one ... this is the best of the day ....

Tulane ULL combined for 524 regulation yards but the game went over the posted total because it went to overtime at 16-16.

Cin-Mia, Oh line opened around 21 and closed at 13, I assume because Trail was starting at QB. I almost took that value on Cin, but glad I didn't. Each team kicked short FGs after having 1st-and-goal inside the 10, Cincy did it twice. Mia got a 2p 6y TD drive after a 94y KO ret. Up by 7 late, Cincy had the ball at Mia 19, but after 4 run plays the clock expired.

I was just going in terms of time down the schedule. Will go watch some NFL now, will be back later. Thanks for filling in some of the night time games...that is where it really got insane!

way crazy for sure, one melt down after another or one miracle after another depending on your side
won one 4th quarter disaster with Stanford but lost the Cal shocker, OK State meltdown, and won Pitt but lost ML which was also the only loss on 6 team parlay.
The announcer for UCLA/Stanford after the fumble return "That score will definitely matter to many"
Felt lucky to come out a few units ahead for the day.
Some of the coaching stuff was a bigger disaster than the on field stuff
Did a lot of coaches go to some seminar together and instead of FG and points it is now ok to go for TD on 4th down (Tenn, Rutgers, more) even in 1st Qtr or 1st half smh

The ponderous part of the Rutgers one was that it was clear at that point that the game was not going to be a shootout. Those pts were likely to matter.

Do players understand that when the ball carrier is running down the sideline, all you have to do is push him out?

It 's like George Welsh all over again. How many times did a GT-UVA game end 41-38 after it was 38-10 at the half? Well, maybe just two, but blowing a 28-0 lead to Clemson was Classic Welsh as well. Then there was that GT-UVA game that ended 39-38 with the 4Q featuring 7 TDs and 1 extra point.

The Buffs won at Autzen. That has not happened since 1967.

MacIntyre was in tears following the win. I have enjoyed seeing how Colorado has come back off the mat, rebuilding the program. 3 seasons ago Ducks had 46 at halftime on Mac's first CU team. Buffs played 'em tough last year and got the big one yesterday. Ducks were certainly in position for the win (or tie) with a first and goal, 2 timeouts and about a minute left, but the INT in the EZ. Buffs out rushed them, out FD'd them, out passed them, out ypp them...oh how the mighty have fallen (although both losses by combined 6 pts when they had the ball last with a chance to win).

Starting in place of Liufau, Montez hit 17 of his first 18 passes and ran for 100y. First CU QB to ever throw for 300+ and rush for 100+ in a game.

Duke beating ND kinda crazy too.

Duke is not a good team, far from it this year. You don't lose to Wake Forest and Northwestern and then beat a team the caliber of Notre Dame. Cutcliffe's legend grows!

It looked good early, 14-0 Irish, then came the Duke KO return. It was like a switch, a black cloud must have moved over South Bend. ND goes 3-and-out, Duke drives the field for TD with QB Jones going 7-of-7 passing, ND misses a FG. Kizer fumbles, the next-best-thing WR Brown fumbles...whenever ND did go ahead, Duke was right there to answer. Duke ran for almost double the yards on ND (208) as the did vs Northwestern (117). ND's season win total was 9.5, under wins after just 4 weeks!

How about this one? Fresno State led 31-0!!! Tulsa's first 4 drives netted just 4 yards and 54 yards on their first 6 drives!! But it wasn't like Fresno O was setting it on fire enroute to that big lead, despite having 31 pts the Fresno O had 7 first downs and lots of 3-and-outs in that span. Tulsa was just letting them get a head start, as Golden Hurricanes were score 38 of the next 41 pts!! No surprise it was Tulsa's biggest comeback in school history.

Boise led 31-7 at half, with alot of the customary Boise trick plays. With Garretson at QB, the Beaver offense was anemic. Typical Boise State rout right? Enter walk-on freshman Connor Blount for the second half...kid never even had taken a rep with first team in practice. Beavs second and third 2nd half drives were bridged together with a successful onside kick and all of a sudden it was 31-17. More unbelievable was the OSU O turn around was the D turnaround. The Boise O had nothing on O in the second half and in fact their D outscored the O with a fumble return TD with under 4 minutes left. On the ensuing KO, Bolden ran it back 99y for the final total and margin. A unlikely Oregon State cover and unbelievable Over.

Everyone pretty much knows how the UF- UT game went down I'm sure, but in keeping with the theme I'll include it, becasue it was utterly crazy as well. Vols fall behind 21-0...nothing to see here, just win 12 in a row for Gators right? Vols couldn't run, receivers dropping passes, Dobbs throwing INT in RZ, Vols can't score on 4 shots inside the 5 following gift Gator fumble. Blow Out, Same old same old Vols. Gators outgained Vols 300-162 at half. Exact opposite second half, Vols dominated with a 336-102 second half yard edge and lots of points, in fact 38 unanswered UT points. Third biggest comeback in Tennessee history.

La Tech led 27-7 3rd qrt, but lost 34-38. The only turnover in the game was a LT fumble on 1st-and-goal at the MT 2. The MT second half D was obviously key, but so was OL (allowed just 1 sack) and running game. On the final LT drive they had 1st-and-goal, but came up empty on 4 tries.

The returned onside kick for Arz St just after Cal had got back under the spread was crushing. But so was Davis Webb's back-to-back 4th qrt INTs. One led to an ASU 23y FG (Cal D held, allowed just 10y on 7 plays) and the later was a pick six. After that onside kick, with Cal down 10 again, Webb fumbled (as at ASU 26 first down). 3 of Cal's final 4 drives ended in a turnover.

It should be noted that the Cal-Az St game saw 45 4th quarter points!

Also, on Nebraska's first drive RB Newby fumbled into the EZ following a 50y run for NW touchback. Later, RB Ozigbo fumbled on 1st down at the NW 2 into the EZ for a NW touchback. At this point NW led 7-3, when it could've been 17-7 Big Red. That FG Neb kicked was from the NW 6 also. 10-7 Nebraska led at the half vs NW for the first time in 6 games! But that was just 10 points on 285 yards of first half Nebraska offense!

Oh, the ULL - Tulane game. Ridiculous!

This game was tied 6-6 at half. In the first half there less than a dozen first downs and about ten three-and-outs. Tulane didn't convert one 3rd down all game, it was something like 0 for 15! Zero 3rd down conversions! In this game FGs were kicked following drives of just 25y, 64y, 7y (drive started at 13 following INT), -1y (drive started at 12 following INT), 3y (drive started at 6 following FUM), 1y (drive started at 4 following punt blk)!! There was an 80y Tulane TD drive and a 48y ULL TD drive (on 16 plays converting 3-of-3 on 4th and 1 - McGuire carried it 10 of the 16 plays).

There were 179 yards of offense in the four OTs with the offenses scoring like they were playing against air all of a sudden. There was just 509 combined yards in the 4 regulation quarters prior.

Crazy!

football games really need to have wagers graded after 60 minutes the way soccer is done after 90, but that is a topic for another time

Rice got out to a 17-0 lead on their first 3 possessions. Their next 4 drives would result in fumble, punt, INT, fumble. NT was fueled by dual 75y TDs one a pass and one a run to gain momentum. The eventual NT win in double OT snapped a 14 game losing streak.

UNLV had a season high 539 yards of offense (7.2 ypp) inclucing 364 rushing (7.4 ypc) in the OT loss to Idaho (378 total yards 5.3 ypp). But Stanton would throw 2 INT, one returned for a Vandal TD, the other setting up a FG. Those were the only two turnovers of the game. UNLV had to settle for an OT FG after having first-and-goal at the 8, while Idaho cashed their possession for the winning TD.

One more utter craziness from week 4!

Nicholls at South Alabama.

USA ran the opening KO back and later went on a 70y TD drive, 14-0 USA. Now the crazy starts...after getting a Nicholls fum, USA QB Davis throws a pick-six. 14-7. Next drive, USA had a FG blk'd and ret for TD. 14-14. Next drive, Davis throws another INT, 3 plays and 26y later Nicholls is in the EZ again. 14-20. Nicholls recovered the KO that apparently USA failed to field! 6 yards later Nicholls gets a 37y FG. 14-23. Two non-offensive TDs, a 26y TD drive off an INT and a FG thanks to a fumbled or muffed KO all in the second quarter.

Take a look at this drive chart:

Their longest drive of the game was 33 yards.

USA enjoyed a 510-230 yard edge, 92-62 plays, 5.5-3.7 ypp, 24-12 first downs and 42%-23% 3rd down conv. USA passed for 300 and ran for 200. Nicholls passed for 69y. But a -2 TO deficit and two Nicholls non-offensive TDs were the story.

Nicholls actually got a TD and 2 pt conversion in the 4th to go up by 7 (32y drive), then USA drove the field for the OT forcing TD with :16 left. In 1st OT Nicholls went for 2 and failed giving USA the 1 pt win.

football games really need to have wagers graded after 60 minutes the way soccer is done after 90, but that is a topic for another time
Ah, mr gar., agree wholeheartedly. Ill take that one step further. Eliminate ot. The ot rules are bad. Bring back tie games, where to us gamblers there is always a winner. Best, most exciting game I ever witnessed was 29-29 tie between Harvard and Yale.
