SEC Week 5 discussion

My PR lines:

Ole Miss -1.5
Alabama -15.5
Miss St -3
LSU -5
UGA -30

Starting the conference grind, should make for some competitive games the next few weeks

Week 4 thoughts:

Alabama/Vandy: Not much to glean from this, other than the Alabama offense showed that they can actually throw and catch, albeit against overmatched competition. Still, a step in the right direction from what we saw a couple of weeks ago. The run game will not look like year’s past, as Alabama doesn’t seem to have that big back that will run over people. It can still be an effective aspect of the offense, but I’d be worried about picking up those 3rd and 2, 4th and 1s against better defenses. As for the Alabama defense, it’s looking like it will a top unit in the conference and the nation. Lots of depth and guys are playing fast. Unusual that there has only been one forced turnover this season. Something to keep an eye on. Special teams is looking like a strength too, although there was a fumble on a long punt return. Not much to say on Vandy, other than they look like they have something to build on, but they are significantly behind the talent curve in the conference

Mizzou/AU: I saw a fair amount of this game, and I wish I hadn’t. Just 2 bad teams that did everything they could to lose. We know Harsin is dead man walking, and I’m guessing he’s let go after the next loss. This might be the lowest talent level I’ve seen in an AU team since I started watching football. Hard to believe Missouri went to back to back SEC Championship games less than a decade ago. I’m not sure Drinkowicz has what it takes, but I have no idea on how hot his seat is

UGA/Kent St: UGA kind of sleep walked through this game, and I’m sure they had to play their 1st teamers much more than they had hoped. Nothing to really be alarmed about, though I think it’s clear that this year’s defense is a step or two below from last year. Probably only a top 7 defense instead of a clear #1. I do wonder about the offense when they face better defenses (which won’t be a for a while). Bowers is obviously a freak, but I don’t know how sustainable it is for him to be that much of the offense. If your TE is your most explosive RB, I think they may be an issue.

Tenn/UF: Entertaining game, though I was at a sports bar so I couldn’t follow it too closely. Obviously a huge Mouse of the back of Tenn. Hooker is fantastic. He will give the defenses of UGA and Alabama trouble. Giving up nearly 600 yards isn’t ideal, but maybe it’s just part of the growing process. Had to get this win for them to take the next step and they did. Not sure I’m ready to call Tennessee the 3rd best team in the conference, though they are in the discussion. That offense has historically struggled against defenses that can match up physically. Thought Richardson played ok. The numbers are there, but he wasn’t very efficient. It’s going to take a while for him to look like an effective passer, if he ever gets there. Off the charts athletically though. Florida just needs more good players

aTm/Ark: Weird game. Ark on the verge of a blowout before the fumble return TD. Gave aTm much needed momentum. Crappy way to lose on that missed FG. Max is a definite improvement at QB for the Aggies, though I don’t think their offense is going to be anything scary this season.

Didn’t watch any of the other games, if there was anything important from any of them, please feel free to add

My initial leans are:

UK - I'll pay to see that Ole Miss is TD better than UK
Arkansas - probably won't bet against my team, but I need to see us do something in a true road game before I believe they can do it.
Miss St - Tough stretch for aTm, coming off Ark with Alabama on deck
LSU - don't see how anyone can bet AU at this point, though i don't think LSU is quite good enough to be laying this many points on the road
UGA - sorry Mizzou, this feels like a get right game for UGA

That’s alotta road beers to lay at night in Jordan Hare. LSU has been improving but 7’ I didn’t expect honestly

100% with UK. Waiting for a +7, but hopefully won't get burned with movement the other way.
I might hold my nose and toss 50 on Aubbie. Dog has 6 straight covers in series, and 4 of L5 have been outright upset wins.
UGA, 100% agree. Looks like their trip to S Carolina couple weeks back.

When Missouri fumbled into the EZ in OT I said "that fumble just saved Harsin his job (for now)". Sucked for anyone that had a Mizzou ML.

How about at the end of regulation, after stopping Auburn on 4th down in the final minutes, Missouri hit a big pass down inside the A03 with :49 left (note - Missouri has multiple timeouts here). Auburn called timeout. First down, Missouri QB goes backwards to center the ball to set up FG at the A08. Auburn calls timeout again. Missouri takes a knee and calls one of their timeouts. 26y FG, :02 left, centered between the hashes, for the win in regulation - the kid misses it.

These kinds of situations get hashed over a lot. If you run a play...Auburn could let them score so they could get a chance. Missouri could fumble. There just is no right reason. How many times does the conservative approach, the safe thinking, not work? Just run a play, run your offense from 3 yard line and try to win. I'm not saying hurry up, kill some clock and run an offensive play and maybe you score, and if you do, force the team on the other side who has 0 points in the second half go down a beat you.

Missouri lost that game twice, once at the end of regulation and once at the end of OT.

Gamecocks were down 7-3 at the end of the first quarter against Charlotte.
The game ended 56-20 Gamecocks win.
Spencer Rattler stat line was 17/23 187yards 0TD.

Anybody have good QB info if these guys are playing?
Brin -Tulsa
Richardson -CMU
McCall -CC
Reynolds -Charlotte
Mcdonald- BG

Sorry, just realized I am in the SEC thread.....

Watching SEC in 60 this morning. Appears a lot of teams were in dog fights with the mid major teams. Need to make a mental note to play against the SEC the week before teams open up their SEC schedule. They just seemed to sleepwalk through these games.

**edit - about 50/50 effort by teams. USCe put forth effort, Leach led team just ran its offense (Roger's played entire game, not smart up 31 in the 4th), LSU needed the reps, UGA played a lot of players, KY just seems to play to the level of competition.

As a fan that'll be there, I was hoping to get the night game experience, but as a fan of the team, I'm very glad it's an early kick.
1st time? Really sucks you didn’t get the night game if that’s the case but feel you in win % for sure

We are making a big road trip of it. Biloxi Wednesday night, NOLA Thursday night, BR Friday and Saturday - and Sunday will be a day from hell. Got any bar/food recs for us in Baton Rouge? Don't think any of us have ever been before.
If your into bourbon, across the bridge past the casinos in Biloxi there Is a store called Maisano's that is known for there barrel selections. They will let you sample them before you purchase too.

FYI, Florida and South Carolina have moved their games this week due to Hurricane Ian. SC will play Thursday night, Florida will play Sunday at noon

11 AM makes for a whole different deal. The Chimes is good, close enough to campus.
BR isn’t NOLA in the food dept…

Walk On’s…..Fred’s and Tigerland, be a mix of young/older

Report back. That’s The Gauntlet. You’ll need The Remedy Room/IV Bags

I don't care how Auburn has looked, Jayden Daniels laying 8.5 on the road in a conference game is an absolute auto fade.
I mean I hate to say I agree. It’s still nighttime at Jordan Hare. LSU has improved I would say, and the coaching advantage for sure. But man that’s alotta points

LSU total offense is ranked 22nd while Auburn total D is 49. Auburn total offense is 89th and LSU total D is 12. Both the O and D lines for Auburn are really poor. If you don’t win the trenches we all know what’s happens. Weather is down to 40% rain but obviously have to see if the hurricane shifts. The only thing in Auburn’s favor imo is this rivalry is bonkers and truly anything can happen. My crystal ball says LSU 34-13. I just don’t know how Auburn is going to score, so I may be kind with the 13.

I've been considering AU TT under

Haven’t seen much of Ashford. Woulda rather Finley play and not be ruled OUT

Ashford can move around

Ashford might develop into a QB but he’s not one now. It’s time for the true freshman Geriner. I watched some highlights of him from HS and he has a quick release and throws really well (nice deep ball too) . And not to state the obvious, but your D is going to stack the box and make us throw. That means interceptions.

Is Ashford healthy? Didn't he hurt himself throwing a block last week?

Yes on the throwing the block and he should be back. Best I can tell they just described it as a stinger. Also sounds like starting safety Kaufman should be back after missing the MO game.

I think this is a bad spot for MO btw. Seems like a name the score game for GA after their lackluster performance last week. Boxscore is really what it should have been other than the 3 bulldog turnovers. Thinking 28-0 half and then just how it gets scrubbed out

I will be on UGA in a variety of ways

I get wut this dude is saying. Kentucky’s play, under Mark Stoops, has always been inconsistent. When it’s all said and done, there will be a statue of Mark Stoops built outside of Commonwealth Stadium as he is our best coach We’ve had since Bear Bryant. But let’s certainly not confuse him with the the Bear or even Nick Saban. Players under Stoops have always played hard when they want to play hard and they take Saturdays off against lesser competition when they want to…it’s been this way during the entire past ten years but it won’t be a problem this Saturday. UK will be at their best.

@JROCK1966

Do you think it is fair to say the let down for UK was last week. Not the YSU game. 'We' thought that they would let down after beating Florida coming home vs an FCS team, but that was no ordinary FCS team geographical ties and friends and family of Stoops in attendance. NIU is very respectable, but let's not forget Vandy beat them. UK should've or could've had a much better showing vs them. Only explanation must be UK brought the B game and NIU was ready to play - correct?

They been pretty good as dogs. This line makes me scratch my head.

Mizzou vs the best team in the country is always a very bad spot for them! Lol. I can’t imagine moral is real high after their sorry coach gave away the auburn game by taking it out his players hands and putting it in the kickers, coaches who try depending on kicker when they could easily score a td make me sick.

That is correct….sometimes my Cats can absolutely be maddening because of their inconsistency of playing to their standard and not the opponent. Like I said, Stoops is our best but he is no Saban.

We also were without a couple of starters…Aijan our starting safety should be back this week…we will be without JJ Weaver which is a big loss for our pass rush but the strength of our front seven is against the run…our LB core is deep and very good at defending the run and will give the Ole Miss run game their biggest test yet.

My only real concern for uk is can they give Levis time to throw? I feel pretty good they can slow down ol piss run game and think they will have some success on the ground, just dunno if they can protect Leviis when they need to throw?

Stoops is winless in 10 years @ SEC West opponents. IMHO he breaks that streak tomorrow but I’m a homer of course so keep that in mind.

;)

If I didn’t accidentally see the rankings and notice uk was all way up to 7 I’d be way more excited about playing them. They gonna be sooooo popular!

Scang will scheme for this…no worries there…in my opinion our biggest worry is this is CRod’s first action this season and he had ball control issues first half of last year…if he fumbles it a couple of times we’re done. Game over…hold onto the ball CRod please!!

In reference to the LSU Tenny early game next week. LSU is 8-0 in that spot in the 2000s. Last loss was the week after the Florida miracle in 1997. I was there, it was hot, alcohol was pouring out of my soul as Deuce McAllister ran wild against the Tigers. The restaurant/bar options are endless and will be extrapolated on in next weeks thread. As for the Auburn game I’m very upset I didnt exploit the -3.5 listed prior to last weeks games. Its LSU vs Auburn where you throw everything out but I’m super confident and expect a DD win. The comments by Koy Moore only boost said confidence as he left for obvious reasons and no way the comments wont be dealt with on the field. Truly a stamp on the end of Harsin’s disastrous reign. Auburn is averaging 3 pts a game in the second half. LSU has played solid in the 2nd half throughout the season. Im playing the game large (for me) but will likely beef up my investment at halftime barring a first half runaway. Can’t wait!

MUST BE STATED
Cant empathize enough the importance of leaving zero valuables in your vehicle in New Orleans. I know of dozens of people personally that had cars broken into for Saints games and one day trips in the last few months alone. Its truly like the wild west and much worse than any previous period. Thats saying something. Twinkie feel free to correct me or provide extra information. Have a buddy that swears by parking at Harrahs and has yet to be victimized. Not hating on New Orleans but if it were me I would want someone to point out the possibilities.

It’s early 1990s bad. Just stay alert and don’t wander alone
