SEC Week 2 Discussion

Head of Alabama Department of Decision-Making
This is some slate for week 2. I was so far off in week 1, maybe I can predict against these stiffs a little better. Here we go:

Texas vs San Jose St
aTm vs Utah St
UGA vs Austin Peay
Ole Miss @ Kentucky
Tennessee vs East Tenn St
Mizzou vs Kansas
Florida vs South Florida
Arkansas vs Ark St
South Carolina vs South Carolina St
LSU vs La tech
Miss St vs Arizona St
Oklahoma vs Michigan
AU vs Ball St
Vandy @ Virginia Tech
Alabama vs La Monroe

Not great, but some interesting ones in there

I actually was able to watch a fair amount of football on Friday and Saturday. Haven't dived into any boxscores and I've avoided most national shows today for obvious reasons.

Watched most of the AU/Baylor game at a party. Couldn't hear, but was able to pay attention decently well. I thought the AU OL did a good job of using their superior size to move the Baylor DL off the ball. Pretty disappointed in what Aranda's defense did, but maybe that was a reaction to AU. Jackson Arnold ran the ball well, but his passing was still pretty shaky from my seat. If they don't get the pass game going, I could see them struggling against the defenses with better players on their schedule. They looked decent on run d, thought the pass d was atrocious. Definitely the weak part of their team so far. But good W for a program and coach that desperately needed it

Texas: Like most, was pretty surprised at how Arch looked. I was skeptical of him being the Heisman front-runner, but I thought it would be better than what we saw. I'm sure it will be better eventually. Tough place to make your first start as the face of the program, plus those expectations. Looked like Sark and Day called the game to protect their young QBs. Defense looked good. Not a disqualifying loss by any stretch

LSU looked like the class of the SEC last night. I was skeptical of those picking LSU so high, and I know it's only one game, but you have to like where they are compared to the other contenders in the conference after one game.

Saw bits and pieces of some of the other games, I'm not sure there's a whole lot to learn from the teams who took care of business against far inferior teams.

Wasn't able to watch the South Carolina game, but I saw they pulled away after being somewhat close into the 3rd quarter. I'm sure ETG could provide some context

And that wraps up everything I saw yesterday.

Just kidding. Listen, I don't have much to add about Alabama's performance that most people could see with their own eyes. It's not that concerning that we loss so much as it's concerning that we didn't look ready to play. This isn't game 10 against some scrub team. I don't care who you are playing, you should be pumped up for game one of the season, and we appear to have too many guys that looked like they didn't want to be there. I don't know what the problem is. It's easy to point and say that De Boer is the problem, and that may be correct, but there are too many other variables to pinpoint the main issue. It is De Boer's job to fix it though, so how he handles this will dictate how long he stays employed. He has a $60MM buyout, so any talk of firing him is pointless for one, and two, would be a guaranteed way to set the program back more. I don't get the sense that the administration is overly concerned, but most of the fanbase is apoplectic right now. I think the 2 things that bother me the most about the De Boer era are that we seemingly game plan very very vanilla for teams we are supposed to beat. Our opponents are going to throw everything they have at us, we can't be worried about keeping things off of film because of future opponents. Two, we play too many players, especially on defense. Our participation chart probably looks like we were playing an FCS teams and were up 50 in the 3rd quarter. But we had a true freshman CB and backup safety in on the first drive when we gave up a long pass play on 3rd and long. We had 3rd string players in at some positions in the 3rd quarter. I'm all for getting guys experience, but similar to my first point, we can't jeopardize the game we're playing that day because we're worried about saving their legs for a potential 16 game season. We are only guaranteed 12 games, and we need to act like the only game that matters is the next one. I never thought the La Monroe game would be so important, but I think we can learn a lot about what this team will be moving forward

Interesting... The amount of guys that played for Bama. That makes no sense.

Why is Kalens buyout so high?!

Fascinated by Michigan / OU. B.A.R. - Initial thoughts?

And this point it warrants belaboring. Sarkisian has a red zone issue. He's really good between the 10s but inside of them a really smart play caller seems to become really dumb. lacking any creativity and innovation. Makes no sense.

I'll have my portion of big ten thoughts tonight.

Golf and BBQ then settle in tonight draft/capping.

Exciting game. These are the kinda matchups between schools that are a treat for the fans.

Junior Bryce Underwood in Austin in '27 will be something else! :)

It's not only how many players that got in, it's when they did and then also who didn't get in. We heard great things about Cam Calhoun the transfer CB from Utah, and he only got in on special teams (recovered the muffed punt) and then nothing on defense, but several true freshmen did. I don't know if it's a recruiting thing where we promised PT to get to commit or what, but it sure seemed like we set up some guys to fail. Then the effort to start the game, WTF? Nothing about Saturday reconciles with what we heard all offseason. So either everyone who went to practices and scrimmages were fooled, or we have some kind of game day problem where we lack confidence and mental fortitude, which is a massive problem. One that Saban dealt with too, but I guess his overwhelming ability was able to mask it much better on the field.

De Boer has a huge buyout for 2 reasons: 1) His price tag was going to be high coming off the season he did, plus I'm sure more was needed to convince him (or anyone) to be the guy to follow Saban. 2) The biggest mismatch in sports is college football head coach agent vs university AD. Not even close to fair fight and the schools lose this battle consistently

I thought the same about the RZ. Probably an unfair comparison, but when he was at Bama he found ways to get the ball in Devonta Smith's hands even inside the 10. And if they didn't give him the ball, they motioned him so much that the defense took their eyes off of Najee Harris who would make the defense pay. I have full faith in Sark, so I wouldn't be worried just yet. He may have tried to protect Arch a little too much on Saturday, but I think they'll be just fine

Calhoun is a good DB. I'm sure he loved not playing when he would have been starting for Utah on Sat night.

These kids will continue to make dumb decisions while chasing that money.

Really intrigued by the ASU @ Miss State game........gotta dive in deeper, but initial lean to Miss State

Why is Kalens buyout so high?!

My understanding is 8 year deal at basically $10M per.......if they fire him w/o cause, they pay out 90% of remaining K.....I know Bama has booster support, but eating $55M if they shitcan him after this year HAS to hurt.......crazytown, but I do think they willl get things right

LSU had these years w/reporting. Seemed like bold faced lies.
Bama just had Saban so long it didn’t matter.

I don't know if it's unfair. It's not as if Texas doesn't have plenty of athleticism to capitalize on. Just some misdirection, wrinkles or something to make the defense think.

I like Sarkisian but it's now five straight losses to top 5 teams. Ultimately, I think he'll get over the hump but not until his creativity wakes up when his team gets near the goal line in big games. As it, it seems to be taking a nap in the worst situations. Weird doesn't begin to describe it. I'd say not to worry but it just keeps happening.

His mom was pretty vocal on Twitter after the game. I don't understand why he didn't play. I've only heard rave reviews about him from camp

I meant unfair in that he was the OC and not the head coach, sorry I didn't state that well at all.

I don't know about other schools, but it's pretty bad at Alabama. Some of the parents think they are celebrities like their sons
I can imagine, especially in an area where the CFB is the king of sports.

Get used to being regular. Welcome to the “priced out party”
Takes a lot to win when the name ain’t Saban brother.

attended the UK game, here's what I came away with:

Toledo had more total yards in the 4th quarter than the 1st three quarters combined at Kentucky. This wasn't a conditioning issue nor did Stoops/White go conservative on D - they decided to put in some backups when we went up 24-9 and they simply did not perform well.

The new beefed up offensive line played great - in particular returners Jager Burton and Jalen Farmer appear to have taken massive leaps forward from last season. Burton looks at home finally with the move to center - the second time in his career he's tried this transition. Farmer is a freak of nature at 6-5 320 18.5% body fat and coming into his own in his second season here after Xfering in from Florida. No sacks allowed and helped roll up 220 rushing yards carrying over their strong camp. Big Blue Wall appears to be back although Toledo's glaring weakness on paper was their defensive line so maybe pump the brakes. McGowan runs a lot like Pacheco from the Chiefs. Dowdell showed some breakaway speed I did not realize he had in the tank on the 79-yard TD. Rushing props cashed easily as expected.

UK's gap schemes were solid and finally got our tight ends involved - the one mismatch we have in the passing game is TE Willie Rodriguez who has some Travis Kelce in his game. Calzada was disappointing in the accuracy department but showed a strong arm. Our wideouts will be fine. UK only completed 10 passes for 85 yards and just four plays went for more than 15 yards. That will not cut it vs Ole Miss Saturday. Took five shots downfield and picked up two PI's.

We only committed three penalties for 30 yards! Nice to finally see a relatively clean football game from that aspect. Three costly turnovers on offense really changed the outcome of the game. An untouched pass rusher forced Calzada into a pick, he also made a bonehead decision in the end zone that resulted in a safety and Will Rod lost a fumble.

Defensively we played like dawgs, dominant for three quarters. Our pass rush/EDGE was relentless with Sam Greene showing his ability to impact Toledo through the bull rush while Steven Soles and Alex Afari answered my LB questions - Soles played great at OLB tallying a couple sacks and forcing two fumbles and Afari was flying all over the field from ILB leading the way with 13 tackles. I knew we had a solid veteran secondary and a massive D-line with depth- but the success on the edge from the newcomers really helps tie this defense together. Me thinks the D is legit as long as we can stay healthy.

Doubt anyone would bet on this game anyway, but Ryan Williams is confirmed out tonight with a concussion
