Two seasons after being the NFL's MVP, Shaun Alexander is looking for work. The Seattle Seahawks released the franchise's all-time leading rusher on Tuesday, reports NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

There has been talk of the Seahawks cutting ties with Alexander since the team signed running backs Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett in free agency last month.

After Alexander set a then-NFL record with 28 touchdowns and a franchise record of 1,880 yards rushing, he signed a $62 million, eight-year contract before the 2006 season.

Alexander, 30, was scheduled to earn $4,475,000 in 2008.

Alexander has had two injury-filled and ineffective seasons since signing his deal, including last season in which he ran for just 716 yards in 13 games. That was his lowest total since he replaced Ricky Watters as Seattle's lead back in 2001.

Jones signed a four-year deal worth up ot $16 million, while Duckett got a five-year deal. The team also has Maurice Morris, who rushed for 628 yards last year, back.

only if you have an O-line with 2 pro-bowlers.

As a Seattle Fan.... glad to see him go. He constantly complained and grabbed the light when he was running good. then he lost his o-line and everyone saw what he was, a moderately quick back who absolutely hates contact. I have not seen another running back fall down in the fetal position more often. I dont mean to rag on him too much but this should have happened a long time ago, it is something fans have asked for a long time. If it were up to the fans, shaun would be gone a long time ago and Hutch woulda stayed.

I wouldn't be surprised of Cincy is a player for him...he grew up really close to Cincy and they've always been emamored w/ him.

I could see Cinci, Chicago or Miami. If it were me id go to South beach for obvious reasons

Washed up

be a nice one-season fill in somewhere

He was.

He filled in nicely during his contract year when he led my fantasy team to the title. Once he got the new contract that was all she wrote.

The dude is damn near worthless and the Seahawks figured it out.

P&G..he'll have one more okay season....

seen it happen many a time

Look at Jamal Lewis

He is very much like jamal lewis, he needs a good offensive line to realize his true value. I believe that he can still be effective but he will only work is certain siutations. I hoped he saved his money because he is not going to be the money he once was not anywhere near it either.

Where he goes and who's interested will be predicated alot on what he thinks his value is/will be...

If he wants to break the bank, don't think many will be interested...

If he's willing to accept his true value to a team and be a split back w/ someone, he can help a team.

Alexander takes it by steps

Shaun Alexander became one of the most prolific running backs in NFL history by going step-by-step toward 10,000 yards. He is doing the same in free agency, which he began by retracing his steps home to visit the Bengals Sunday and Monday, and plans to continue with a trip to the Saints and New Orleans.

Both sides apparently want to go slow and don't have an imminent timetable because all indications are the Bengals and Jim Steiner, Alexander's agent, had yet to touch base Monday night after his client had finished meeting with the coaches, some players, and taking a tour of Paul Brown Stadium. Alexander also said there are other teams interested.

"All I wanted to do was meet with them, get to know them and see what it was like here," said Alexander, when contacted at his hotel Monday evening. "They were nice. I liked it. They did everything right."

But the Bengals didn't make an offer as they apparently ponder the pros and cons of adding a 31-year-old coming off his two worst seasons into a running back mix that already includes the franchise's two-time single-season rusher in Rudi Johnson.

When asked if the coaches had sketched out how he would be used and if he would welcome maybe splitting carries with Johnson, Alexander said it hasn't gone that far.

"I haven't even really thought about that," Alexander said. "Right now I'm just trying to get an idea of what the team is like and getting to know some people. That's about all, and I'm going to New Orleans after I leave here. I'm just taking it step-by-step."

Alexander, the Florence, Ky., product who set state records for career yards and touchdowns at Boone County High School, also took his visit in pieces. He got in late Sunday night from Seattle and went right to PBS for his physical Monday morning. He didn't plan anything social until he finished the day with the Bengals, and he said he planned to head out to visit Northern Kentucky Monday night.

"It's always fun to come home," he said.

But it's more complicated than that when work gets involved. Two weeks ago Alexander was released from a $62 million deal in Seattle and the Bengals are up against a salary cap that includes Johnson counting about $3.5 million.

Plus, the Bengals running back situation just doesn't look clear enough to be able to make a clear-cut call on offering Alexander a contract. If Johnson and Chris Perry are healthy and back to 2005 form, would there be a reason to sign Alexander?

But the Bengals don't know that yet and Alexander offers great character and a track record, even if his numbers are down the last two years and he struggled last season with a broken wrist and knee and ankle problems.
Yet it would seem Kenny Watson and DeDe Dorsey also to have to make the roster because of what Watson does on third down and special teams and because of what Dorsey does with his speed.

Since the Bengals traditionally keep three running backs, the math makes it hard.
"It was a good visit," Alexander said. "We'll see what happens."

he was very classy about leaving the 'Hawks. Somehow i'm a Seattle fan, and i'm sad to see him go as a person, but as a player he was really bad the last 2 years and can not catch water if he fell out of a boat

give him a great O-line and he can hit the holes, but you would be better off with most other backs in this league, he profited based on where he was and who he was behind.

Steve Hutchinson's departure is positively correlated to Shaun Alexander's decline. This is yet again proof that the running game starts with the OL.
