2 Parlays June 24: Angels to Show No Mercy in Colorado

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Cleveland Guardians
Saturday, June 24, 2023 at 4:10 p.m. ET at Progressive Field in Cleveland & Boston Red Sox vs. Chicago White Sox Saturday, June 24, 2023 at 4:10 p.m. ET at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago

  • Milwaukee's lineup tends to flounder after a nice scoring output
  • Cleveland lacks the power to take advantage of Freddy Peralta's vulnerabilities
  • The White Sox and Red Sox lineups enjoy strong matchup potential

Who Starts for Cleveland?

Tanner Bibee starts for the Guardians today.

Bibee will be happy to return to Cleveland where he's allowed one earned run in each of his last three home starts.

Limiting Hard Contact

His last two starts, which took place on the road, do not change the fact that he's done a great job of limiting hard contact.

Batters have a difficult time against Bibee because he ably keeps them off balance.

His pitches create a strong change of pace relative to each other.

For example, his changeup averages 11.2 fewer mph than his fastball.

Moreover, Bibee is hard to hit because of the strong spin that he puts on his pitches, which makes them difficult for batters to track.

Brewers' Lineup

Milwaukee's lineup is in a bad spot today because it tends to fall flat after scoring over five runs in its previous game.

If the Brewers' lineup could ever be called a good lineup, it's certainly not a consistent one.

Their outlook today is especially negative because they match up poorly with Bibee, slugging .383 against his pitches from righties.

Who Starts for Milwaukee?

Freddy Peralta starts for the Brewers today.

While Peralta has been steadily dropping his ERA, he has had a problem with giving up home runs.

Cleveland is just the opponent for him, however: the Guardians average the fewest home runs per game.

They also match up poorly against him in that they rank second-to-last, slugging .351, against his pitches from righties.

So, this game will be low-scoring.

Who Starts for Chicago?

Lance Lynn starts for the White Sox.

Lynn has been a tremendous "over" pitcher this season: the "over" is 10-5 in all of his starts and 5-1 in his home starts.

He is a big reason for this "over" tendency because he consistently gives up a lot of runs, home runs, and hard contact.

Who Starts for Boston?

James Paxton starts for Boston today.

While his ERA looks pretty, he's benefitted from facing a lot of soft matchups.

Three of the seven teams he's faced thus far rank bottom-six in slugging against his pitches from lefties.

Matchups

Paxton has been far from immune against tougher matchups.

Chicago can do some damage to him today, as it ranks ninth in slugging .452 against his pitches from lefties.

Likewise, Boston ranks sixth in slugging .454 against Lynn's favorite pitches from righties.

Washington Nationals vs. San Diego Padres
Saturday, June 24, 2023 at 8:40 p.m. ET at Petco Park in San Diego and Los Angeles Angels vs. Colorado Rockies at 9:10 p.m. ET at Coors Field in Denver

  • Josiah Gray is primed to bounce back tonight
  • Washington's bullpen will outperform San Diego's
  • Griffin Canning and the Angels' lineup both enjoy strong matchup advantages

Who Starts for Washington?

Josiah Gray starts for the Nationals today.

Gray collected his sixth loss of his season in his last start, but this actually creates promise for him today.

He has allowed two earned runs or fewer in every start directly following one in which he collected a loss.

Given this trend, we should expect him to bounce back well today.

Gray's Good Qualities

Today's Nats pitcher does a lot well.

For example, as heat maps show, he does a good job of keeping his pitches along the borders of the strike zone where batters tend to do greater damage.

Matchup

Gray's outlook today is also solid because he matches up well against the Padres.

They rank 25th in slugging .386 against his pitches from righties.

Padres' Pitching Disadvantage

San Diego's Matt Waldron makes his professional debut today.

He has a 7.02 ERA in Triple A so far, which obviously renders his professional outlook negative.

While San Diego's bullpen has better numbers than Washington's, the Nats' bullpen is fresh and will be able to be more selective about which relievers it uses today.

Who Starts for the Angels?

Griffin Canning starts for L.A. today.

His 1.96 FIP (like ERA but factors out fielding) in his one start in Coors Field suggests that he is comfortable in the higher altitude.

Rockies' Lineup

It is hard to assess how well the Rockies measure up against a pitcher's stuff because their batting numbers are inflated by the hitter-friendly nature of their home ballpark.

If we remove the altitude factor by looking at their road games, they slug .368 against Canning's pitches from righties.

While they'll play in altitude today, obviously their opponent will as well, so altitude won't determine which lineup will be more effective.

Their lineup also looks bad today because Randal Grichuk, Harold Castro, and Jurickson Profar are combined 3-for-16 against Canning.

Charlie Blackmon and CJ Cron are, moreover, injured.

Who Starts for the Rockies?

Chase Anderson starts for the Rockies today.

He's allowed eight home runs in his past five starts and ten earned runs in his past two starts, both of which took place on the road.

His outlook today is negative because the Angels match up well against him, ranking fourth in slugging .456 against his pitches from righties.

Furthermore, they slug .469 against fly ball pitchers, compared to .385 against ground ball ones.

Padres starter is tough to gauge, he's the first true knuckleball pitcher we've seen in a while. This year his numbers haven't been good at AAA but he was pretty much dominant at AA last season. If that knuckler is dancing it's going to be hard for the Nats to do much imo. Haven't had to bring it up in some time but wind blowing out helps knuckleballs, blowing in hurts them. Haven't looked but doubt that will be much of a factor in SD but worth a glance at least.

Is it too soon to celebrate the Angels? Lol holy shit...
Last I saw it was 15-0 and they obviously scored and went for 2

Nice job today, tough for me in SD but at the end of the day taking over on that team is tough to stomach. 2nd time this week one of my 4 playe lost 1-0 with zero business getting blanked by the opposition.
