</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>There's plenty of good stuff that needs covering to finish up a busy week, let's skip the usual chatter and get right to the notes from around baseball .

* Jim Edmonds signed with the Cubs late Wednesday night and started in center field Thursday against the team that released him last week, going 1-for-4 versus the Padres while leaving seven runners on base and grounding into a double play. Edmonds is 37 years old and hit .178 in 26 games with San Diego after batting just .252/.325/.403 last season in St. Louis, yet Chicago was quick to once again push Felix Pie aside in order to make room for him on the roster.

Pie won the starting job in center field following a strong spring training and collected a hit in each of the Cubs' first three games, but went 0! -for-4 in Game 4 and amazingly hasn't seen more than three straight starts since. He's 23 years old and has hit .306/.361/.484 in 196 games at Triple-A, yet manager Lou Piniella wasn't even willing to consistently play him against right-handers, often going with 31-year-old Reed Johnson and his .267/.328/.381 career mark versus righties.

Now Piniella will likely put Edmonds into the role that Pie should have been allowed to fill, starting him against most righties while Johnson takes over against most southpaws. Moving from Petco Park to Wrigley Field while being protected against lefties is just about the best-case scenario for Edmonds, but it won't matter much if he's as done as he looked in San Diego. He has a chance to be a moderate asset in NL-only leagues, but that's it at this point and Pie deserved better.

* Jason Isringhause! n wa s stripped of ninth-inning duties last weekend, but made back-to-back scoreless appearances this week and found himself being asked to pitch the eighth inning of a one-run game Thursday night. He served up a three-run homer to Jason Bay and coughed up a total of four runs while being charged with another blown save, and the Cardinals announced shortly after the game that they plan to place him on the disabled list.

Even if he returns following the minimum 15-day stay on the shelf, Isringhausen is highly unlikely to resume closing before the All-Star break, if at all. He began the year by converting his first five save chances, but has blown six saves while giving up 16 earned runs in a dozen innings since then. That works out to an ugly 12.00 ERA and he has an 8-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio to match. Unlikely as it may sound, Ryan Franklin has a chance to keep the job for quite a while.

* Nick Johnson's career-long struggles with injuries have again relegated him to the disabled list, this time with a torn tendon in his right wrist that's expected to sideline him for 4-6 weeks. He's never been a fast healer, so it certainly wouldn't be shocking to see Johnson miss the bulk of the remaining season, which is unfortunate given that he was getting on base at his usual 40-percent clip even after missing all of last year with a broken leg.

There's zero good news to be had for Johnson at this stage, but the nice thing for the Nationals is that Dmitri Young is expected to return from the DL at some point this weekend and can step right in as the new s! tarting first baseman. Young has just two at-bats this season! because he began the year backing up Johnson and then suffered a back injury, but did a fantastic job filling in for Johnson in 2007, hitting .320/.378/.491 with 13 homers and 74 RBIs in 136 games.

* Ryan Braun became the latest young player to choose stability over the potential for a bigger payday down the road Thursday, signing an eight-year, $45 million contract that will keep him in Milwaukee through 2015. The deal includes his $455,000 salary for this season, so it's really a seven-year extension worth $44.5 million. That overtakes the deal that Jeff Suppan signed last winter as the largest contract in team history and buys out Braun's first two years of free agency.

Braun was al! ready under the team's control through 2012 and wouldn't even have been eligible for arbitration until 2011, so there's plenty of risk involved in committing $45 million to player with less than one full season's worth of time in the majors under his belt. With that said, if he remains healthy and productive the Brewers will end up saving a significant amount of money over the life of the contract while delaying free agency, and for mid-payroll teams that's worth the risk.

AL Quick Hits: Alex Rodriguez (quadriceps) ran the bases prior to Thursday's game and is on track to return from the disabled list Tuesday . After signing a three-year, $28.5 million contract extension Wednesday, Scott Kazmir tossed six shutout innings Thursday to beat the Yankees and keep the Rays in fi! rst place . B.J. Ryan pitched a perfect 11th inning Thursday to record his seventh save and has now thrown a dozen scoreless innings since returning from Tommy John elbow surgery . John Lackey came off the shelf Wednesday to make his season debut, tossing seven innings of one-run ball versus the White Sox . Despite Travis Hafner's struggles at the plate and past health problems due to playing first base, the Indians are expected to give him some time there over Ryan Garko during interleague play . Ian Kennedy rejoined to the rotation Thursday after a one-start demotion to Triple-A, ! coughing up five runs over five innings in a loss to the Rays . Both the Rockies and Brewers are rumored to be interested in Julian Tavarez, who was designated for assignment earlier this week.

NL Quick Hits: Tim Lincecum struck out 10 batters Thursday and has yet to allow more than three runs in a start this season, but got stuck with a no-decision when the bullpen imploded . Chipper Jones and his MLB-leading .418 batting average were scratched from Thursday's lineup because a groin injury . Manager John Russell said Wednesday that Ryan Doumit (thumb) will miss at least a month, giving Ronny Paulino more time than expected to be an NL-only asset . Ben Sheets took a shutout into the seventh inning Thursday before allowing six runs on three homers while recording just one out . Manager Joe Torre said Wednesday that Nomar Garciaparra (calf) could see time at shortstop if he comes off the disabled list before Rafael Furcal (back) . Mike Pelfrey lost his fourth straight start Thursday despite taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning and allowing one run over 7.1 frames . Lance Berkm! an delivered a game-winning homer Thursday and now ranks second in the majors in both batting average (.391) and RBIs (43) . Initially expected to land on the DL, Luis Castillo (quadriceps) instead started Thursday and went 2-for-2 with a walk.

Yeah - I made mention in Fridays thread that theres usually at least one IL series that, if it starts with a runs fest, sets the tone for the rest of the series where its as if both teams get the idea it'll take nothing less than a big batting effort to win. The 2 that set that stage from today are obviously in Philly & Texas (& Florida). Have since seen the Texas Ump which is a downer for such thoughts, but then again I'm sure many an under ump has come undone doing a game in Arlington.

I like the way your thinking there as Arl. certainly can be a juice box aided with the right pitching matchups and umps.

Interested slightly in the Pirates slightly at the price they're getting. Stats won't back it up, more of just a feeling they need to take one now. Bay, Nady and McLouth would have to be the spark I would guess and Duke would have to do his part. He's pitching a bit better, but not sure if facing the Cubbies LH crushers would even give him a chance. The only angel I have is motivation from Pit and a letdown spot, perhaps, for CHC.

lots of cheap prices today... carmona @ plus money, oswalt @-111 and L. Hernandez at plus money also

have to dig deep in these

The way SD has hit vs LHP it would be of interest to back Bedard especialy with Wolf struggling some of late. That sort of jumped off the page although Seattle has to hit.

Is there any reason to back Pitt? Seriously the closest one of there LHP has come to a win is today losing by 3 in the past 6 games started by a LH during this 10 game Cubs win streak vs Pitt. The only thing I can see is Duke has had success @ Chi and even Chi but the three trouble starts vs Chi have ben recently and in his last 4 starts vs them...Zambrano had some issues vs Pitt where had a stretch of starts 5 to be exact where he allowed at leas 5 runs vs them and actually the span was 6 of 7 beginning of 5 till the 1st start of 2007 then the past few have been pretty solid.....only caution in laying such a hefty price...

Garza vs Wainright seems like an under looking how both teams are hitting...

Bush on the road vs Boston seems like a fade especially with SOX in need of a WIN or two...over ??? seeing how Wake struggled last time out...

Chan Ho Park getting the start ? Ervin Santana at home doesnt really seem to need much reasoning especially seeing how LAD hits vs RHP. Though he is off his 1st rough start of 08.

Oliver Perez vs Yanks ...Under ...he was tough on them in 2007....Yanks need a win whats going on with the Mets and the clubhouse??

Reds - Under ?

Think I am love with the Nationals ...Perez much better then Burres so far maybe just 1st 5 Inn

Might be stupid enough to lay chalk again with Colorado

Braves are slumping but Oak is just not doing anything with the bat and facing Hudson. Harden still finding his way abck....

Thats about all after a quick glance.....lots of crappy SP and doubleheaders maybe an over grand salami:shake:

did anybody ever see a line on the Mets vs Yanks....was seein some stuff about Johan +$ wondering if it was ever up as that because sign me up anytime him or Brandon Webb are in that category

I think it was just mistake listing Santana instead of Perez....

ahhh gotcha just got home from the Reds game wasn't sure....big win for the Reds tonight and two very interesting games coming up this weekend. The ball Phillips hit was a bomb and was sure Adam Dunn's ball was in the river. Will take a long look at tomorrows game in the morning but not sure if Harang is deserving of being the favorite.

Carmona not quite as good on 5 days rest...Tribe still not hitting.laning Reds again

how the hell is the Colorado-Minnesota O/U at 10.5? And people like the over??? Livan has been pitching well despite the age, and Reynolds isn't pitching poorly either.

...that is my play tomorrow, UNDER, especially with Guccione behind the plate who gave me an under on Tuesday night in the CHW-LAA game.
I'm ecstatic about this one, so this should mean fade away, haha

Think I am liking some day unders...

probably play the Pitt under as kinda a lucky over considering it needed 6 hrs to get 11 runs and lose by 1/2 run...15 hits only...6bbs and 1 error....fluky IMO

Duke says his sinker is the reason why he pitched well past few so is there a better cure for stopping Hrs then a sinker ?? Zambrano tough at home and in the day off a 12-3 win as well....Bay and Nady do hit him real well thiough but everyone iutsuide of Nate struggles badly.....

Another total I like is the over @ Baltimore. Sort of another lucky under....tons of stranded baserunners early and 5-3 after 5 with an 8.5 total the pens were so good though....Perez has struggled some on the road abd facing an AL lineup it could ctahc up to him...Burres has been decent bit no run support...thinjing over 9

Alos thinking about Unders in NYY and Cincy......

Cards under seems interesting by Wainright off a bad outing and thar game had some opps to score but pissed away....Garza rolln lately

Thinking LAA and maybe an over...

Need to see if DiceK on 7 days is bad but think it could be...6 days is his peak....

Can someone explain how the giants are not the favorite ??? Zito is pitching much much better than Buehrle to start the year and is at home. The white sox have had a crapload of at bats vs zito and have VERY little to show for it ... . guess you have to consider those occurred when he was with the A's and a much better SP. For the faders ... which one do you pick ... buehlre has almost burned as much money as zito at this point. Just dont see a way that i dont back the giants in that one.

Initial gut feel is Over there as well, gotta work on that one.

maybe under seattle.

quality starter for padres in wolf ? check
quality starter for M's in Bedard ? check
struggling vs lefties for padres ? check
struggling vs lefties for seattle ? nope hit them well.. but not lately
humongous stadium ? check
under umpire ? check ( nelson )
8.5 innings more likely than 9 ? check

think seattle wins here too but not sure i want to lay that price after bedards last start in texas. Think the total is safer

my initial thoughts are the same. Havent looked at fully yet though. Game today had no business going under.

I feel the same way but then I guess I looked at it the same way tonight how is Snachez dogged vs Floyd? If that line makes sense it seems this almost does...Sanchez at hone gas to be worth more then Zito and hard to imagine though Floyd has pitched better he is worth more then a vet lie Buerhle. So if thats the case then SF would have to be cheaper today...

Biggest difference bewteen the SP is Buerhle has been real solid 4 tines and some sort of bad in the other 4 were Zito has been medicore 3 or 4 and some sort of bad the others....

Also Zito is getting no respect he has been a bigger dog then expected in every start since his return.....curious line for sure...:shake:

Be careful with an under in cincy. The ball flies outta that park in the daytime. Harang a great pitcher but a flyball guy and Carmona has nasty stuff but gives free bases which doesnt work in that park in daylight. I guess Halion looks like a decent under guy though. Any idea what gametime temp for this one is ??

I hear what you are saying about the line value i guess. Just ponderous because in my mind zito has pitched better to this point of the season than Buehrle has. Granted , the cws lineup is superior. Still plus money at home vs cws and buehrle ?? i will study it some more but i have a feeling this one definitely makes the card tomorrow.

Was thinking that being Carmona is a sinker baller havint him on normal rest off a CG is a plus( looked like it from the2007 starts 100+ pitches then normal rest seemed to produce solid results-- this year he was @ LAA in that situation and very good). His day splits were excellent last year and really during the reg season I dont think he did worse then 7 inn 3 runs away...for Harang he seems to be better so far in the days starts which is a trend reversal for him....Granted he struggled with the long ball last time out believe he was 7 of 8 under till that game...Tribe bats still slumping and ouside of 3 solo Hrs in 1 inning followed being nohit the 1st 5 they were quiet again. Also good chance Hafner sits the NL sites and if he doesnt then Garko does so pretty solid bats lost.

Also Tribe worst team in baseball offensively in day games so far. 12-2 Under and only 2.9 runs per.....allow just 3.3 runs though. also 71-32 UNDER in day games since the start of 2006 for Cle....scary part as u said going under @ 8.5 in Cincy which is 2-1 UND so far but 11-3 over since 06.

Really think I prefer Reds to the under but we shall see...quick weather said around 70 but rain tmrw but didnt really look when the rain was expected......

Good points about SEA somewhat concerned more about Wolfs pitching then anythung else...kinda roughed up some in 4 of his past 5 starts....:shake:sleep time

He has been bad his last 2 and his 1st outing which I blame on Guillen. Said this before but because Guillen felt Tribe struggled vs LHP he made Buerhle skip his tuneup start on what was the last SAT of ST so he could pitch him in game 2 @ Cle on Tuesday..so he got like 3 extra days off which could wreck any SP....in the 4 real good starts included Balt cause only 3 hits but just 6 earned (9runs) in 28 innings with 3 of them at least 7 innings...thats a sub 2 ERA....So he has done some good things...

Where Zito maybe leaves a better impression because his past 2 starts have been better then Buerhle's? Cause Zito has never gone 7 innings and went 6 inn just 3 times compared to Buerhle going at least 7 on 4 occassions...23 inn 9er (13 runs) which is closer to 3.50...

I guess I agree Zito seems to be headed in a better direction then Buerhle but if SF wasnt a play today with a better LH then why here ? Extra dime or two bit makes sense seeing as Zito is not as good s Sanchez....

Tough one IMO..

last 22 days, games w/AL home teams: U/O 83-48-5, just 35.2% Overs

In light of that I had in mind IL play might usher in a bit more balanced total results given AL domination of IL play. After 1 day, it's O/U 2-2.

I'll keep note of how things go.

yeah i see your point on the reds game, nut. think i will just sit that game out. Harang is certainly capable of pitching a great game and so is carmona. ill just watch and cheer for whatever you play there.

i am betting zito tomorrow. right now floyd > buehrle by quite a bit imo. Your last ten games illustration was one of the things i looked at as well. Definitely makes a good case for zito. Think you get value with him since his return because there are some folks out there who are just blindly fading him at this point ... and depositing in their banks i might add.

can always count on betcrimes with the relevant trends and stats !!

gonna need under 8.5 or higher to play the mariner game after looking it all over thoroughly.

Just started looking. Would recommend not making Any play in the Baltimore game. Burres is clearly in bad form but in his best spot at home at night. Note he got into trouble at home vs Tampa when after 6 innings and 2 runs vs a team he had had great trouble with the moron ran him out in the 7th at close to 100 pitches. Then the next 2 away vs good team. Baltimore is simply playing too well to bet against right now. This game should just be observed.

hmmmmm maybe bobby cox has lost his touch.

Not a coincidence that mariners and braves with two terrible bullpens right now because of injuries are hurting in that stat. good info timh.

Also its amazing that SF has played 19 one run games so far. 19 out of 47 comes in at 40% which is considerably over the avg. which ususally is about 28%.

Love the Angels even around -160. Gonna play the Mets who can hit lefties against a struggling Petitte and a Yankees lineup without 2 of their best hitters.

So far I think the only day play I will be on is Cincy.

Facing a Tribe lineup who hasnt hit much of late . Which also happens to be the worse offense in day games producing a 12-2 under record so far scoring just 2.9 runs. Cle is hitting 205 L10 vs RHP and .214 overall in that span. Since the start of 2006 Tribe is 71-32 UNDER in day games which is near 70% so it seems they have a history of struggling offensively in day games...

So also looking at the under depending on a few things ...Tribe 13-1 in May. Reds 12-7-2 Under at home icluding some solid pitching last 7 home games...vs Cubbies 3,3,0 allowed. Then vs Florida while they allowed 6 and 7 in two of the games it all happened late for the most part. Harang went 7 innings allowing 4 in the 7 run game and I believe the 6 run game was 6-0 after 7 innings.... also Harnag is 6-0-1 UNDER in his career vs Tribe....Carmona had 11 away starts of 7 or more innings allowing 3 runs or less , one other quality start where he went 6 inn allowing 2 runs and then 4 were he basically went 6 inn allowing 3 runs.....

:shake:

for the day games i like tb/stl under 8, nym/nyy ov 8. SN, i know you know everything about new york baseball so what is your opinion on this total?

vegaskyle, i can't say i disagree with your play on the giants, but i know the white sox pretty much inside and out. mark has actually pitched very well but our fielders have been committing these "errors" that aren't in the box score but have burned buehrle. he hasn't been able to pitch around them. i would have to say mark is f*ckin WAAAYYY better than zito. zito had one decent outing and now your ready to back him?? sox bats are 100x better than the giants. i couldn't trust sfg to score 3 runs in any game. they can't score guys on third with no out. do what you do, but the sox are starting to streak and i wouldnt back a shitbag team unless i was getting better odds.

Dislike posting much chalk but have some. How about the Dodgers first 5 ml and plus .5. The one time Santana had this ump he was slaughtered at home. Last 3 years in day games he has averaged more than a run every 2 innings. Park seems to have matured and has been pitching very well.
Would remind once that this is the second game of a home series in Phillie.

alright whatever, i just parlayed under 8 stl/tb (-125)/ over 7.5 nyy/nym (-120). of course they changed the juice on me while i was making my bet.
