Betting On History At Saturday’s IndyCar Road America Grand Prix

NTT IndyCar Series: REV Group Grand Prix Race 1
Saturday, July 11, 2020 at 5 p.m. ET (NBCSN) at Road America in Elkhart, Wisconsin

Pre-Preliminary Race Info

Keep in mind that we have a doubleheader taking place this weekend.

Saturday will witness the first leg of the doubleheader, which is what currently occupies our concern.

One other meaningful pre-note is that Saturday’s event will be the first IndyCar one open to spectators.

Obviously, precautionary measures will ensure that the fan experience won’t be the same as it had been. But the return of spectators still seems like a promising step back towards normalcy.

Preliminary Race Info:

Beginning on Saturday morning at 11 a.m., a practice session will be run, which will be followed by qualifying at 2:15 p.m.

Qualifying is what will determine the starting lineup.

So, whereas oddsmakers are having their odds ready well in advance, IndyCar handicapping is more about being prepared in advance of odds being released.

Race Info

As for the race itself, Saturday’s rendition will differ from Sunday, excepting the fact that both races shall take place on the same track.

Regarding Saturday’s version, drivers will complete 55 laps. In so doing, they will have accumulated 220 miles.

Track Configuration And Speed

Road America’s course is known as America’s National Park of Speed.

This designation is justified and made possible by the course’s configuration (in addition to its scenic location).

Much of the course has, with respect to its configuration, remained constant since the inception of its layout.

Changes have become necessary, though, in order to inject greater safety into the racing experience as drivers have literally died as a direct result of injuries suffered at this track.

The speed factor, encouraged by a very long straightaway that features some elevation changes, obviously contributes to the greater number of injuries.

There are also 14 turns for drivers to navigate on each lap.

Road America is most famous for a turn whose extreme danger is measured by the number of victims that it has claimed, called The Kink.

In trying to complete this turn, drivers carry both high risk and high reward.

High reward is available in the straightaway which the turn feeds into. This straight is fast and its fastness is encouraged by the downhill direction of the turn.

There is also a risk, which is manifest in the proximity of both walls to each side of the track. Drivers will attempt high speeds here. But there is relatively little room for error.

History To Be Made: Scott Dixon’s Form

Saturday’s IndyCar event could witness history.

IndyCar has run two events thus far: the season opened on June 6 at the Texas Motor Speedway. The next event was last Saturday’s, which was at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Scott Dixon has won both events. So on Saturday, he could be the first driver to win a season’s first three races since 2006 — where Sebastien Bourdois won the first four Champ Car races.

It’s easy to say that, given the rarity of this potential feat, he must surely be „due“ to lose. But it’s already rare for a driver to win his season’s first two races.

The fact that Dixon has won this season’s first two races attests to how strong his current racing form is. There is no „due factor“ here.

Track History

My optimism is Dixon on Saturday is reinforced by his positive history at the Road America track.

In Dixon’s last three races at Road America, he finished top-five. In 2017, Dixon won.

The Verdict

Scott Dixon shows superb racing form. His strong racing history at this track should solidify your trust in him.

With my IndyCar Betting Picks, I will bet on Dixon to win when IndyCar oddsmakers release their odds.

Best Bet: Dixon To Win (Odds TBA)
