Red Zone now Red Area?

Been meaning to ask this for awhile. I’ve noticed announcers and even sports talk referring to the “red zone” as the “red area” now. Wtf? I’m guessing the reason for this is some sort of retarded BS. But does anyone know the reason why?

My only guess is that Red Zone is a channel so what was Red Zone is now something else.

My wild guess is that they are trying hard to draw analogies between football and basketball -- perhaps to condition viewers to accept the increasing softness of the sport. I see a lot of basketball terms being thrown around by commentators. This is a minor step in that direction...basketball doesn't have a painted zone but it has a painted area.
