Boston Red Sox vs. Chicago White Sox
Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at 8:10 p.m. ET at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago

Who Is Starting for Boston?

Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta showcases superb form.

He has yielded a sub-one FIP (like ERA but factors out fielding) in two of his last four starts.

In each of his most recent two starts, he yielded a sub-three FIP.

Moreover, in his last three games, he has allowed a combined total of two earned runs despite lasting 22 innings.

What Pitches Does Pivetta Throw?

Since his debut in 2017, Pivetta has always featured his fastball.

This pitch has always been the one he throws most frequently and for good reasons.

Its spin rate is well above average. His fastball is effective because he combines good spin with good location.

In addition to distributing this pitch well among different parts of the strike zone, he likes to locate it high.

Spin creates the appearance of rising action. So, when he locates his fastball high, batters will swing underneath it.

This combination of events helps explain why he allows such a high rate of fly balls.

Since his rookie season, Pivetta has eliminated the sinker from his repertoire.

His second favorite pitch is his high-spin, movement-heavy curveball.

Befitting a starting pitcher, he is also comfortable with a third pitch, a slider, which he likewise throws over 19 percent of the time.

Pivetta vs. White Sox Batters

Besides Pivetta's strong form, I like him today because the White Sox rank 26thin slugging against his favorite pitches from righties.

The White Sox have struggled in their home ballpark in general -- they're hitting .220 here -- and against righties in general, who they bat .229 against.

Pivetta is just the righty to limit Chicago's scoring tonight.

Who Is Pitching for Chicago?

Tonight's White Sox starter, Dylan Cease, boasts a nice ERA, but he's also had it easy in terms of matchup.

Cease has faced two teams that rank top-five in slugging against his favorite pitches from righties.

One of those teams was the Yankees. In that game, Cease allowed six earned runs in four innings.

The other team was actually Boston, and. Cease performed well in that game.

However, that game against Boston took place on May 7.

At that point of time, the Red Sox were in the midst of a major rut during which they scored two runs or fewer in four of five games. They lost all five games.

Boston's Hot Streak

However, the Red Sox are hot right now.

They've won five straight games, scoring five or more runs in each game.

During this streak, they are slugging .527 against Cease's pitches from righties.

Look out, for example, for Rafael Devers. He is slugging .744 in May.

Milwaukee Brewers vs. San Diego Padres
Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at 9:40 p.m. ET (TBS) at Petco Park in San Diego

Who Is Starting for Milwaukee?

Corbin Burnes enjoys a bounce-back opportunity in his start tonight for the Brewers.

When he last yielded an ERA over five in a game, he shut out his next opponent over the course of seven innings.

Burnes vs. Padre Batters

In his career in San Diego, Burnes has thrown seven shutout innings in his career.

While the data sample isn't large, it looks extremely promising especially considering all other details.

Only two Padre batters are hitting over .167 in their career against Burnes.

Jake Cronenworth, for example, is 0-for-6 lifetime against Burnes.

Burnes relies primarily on a cutter-curveball combo.

I like him tonight most especially because the Padres rank 22nd in slugging against his pitches from righties.

Who Is Pitching for San Diego?

Blake Snell will hope to be sharper in what will be his second start of the season for San Diego tonight after his activation from the IL.

Snell merits pessimism tonight because the Brewers rank eighth in slugging against his favorite pitches from lefies.

His poor form and poor matchup make him worth going against tonight.

Brewers don’t hit lefties and don’t score for Burnes. The team is also without Adames and Renfroe as well as Hader so no I don’t like them tonight at all.

They don‘t score for Burnes? Why can‘t that change, unless they tell each other that they want to fuck up Burnes‘ record?

They‘re avg in slugging vs lefties, that was a big problem last year, i remember tho. They are doing well vs Snell‘s pitches from lefties. Snell‘s form might be off. And the Padres arguably have bigger injury issues.

You may be right, but over time it seems like you‘re a big pessimist when it comes to your teams

It’s one game so anything can happen but how are they supposed to hit Snell without Adames and Renfroe. Maybe Cain can hit a ground ball in the right spot but a weak lineup with everyone there is downright pitiful without Adames and Renfroe.
