Quinton Jackson arrested, facing felony hit-and-run charge in California

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson has been arrested and faces multiple felony charges stemming from an alleged hit-and-run and a subsequent police chase in California.

Jackson was arrested today and bail has been set at $25,000, according to a representative from the Costa Mesa Police Department.

"[Jackson] was arrested, he was transported to the Orange County central jail, and he is booked there, and that's where he's at currently," Costa Mesa Police Lieutenant Paul Dondero told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

Jackson allegedly hit multiple cars during a short police chase Tuesday afternoon just after 1 p.m. PT. He eventually pulled over and surrendered to police after traveling from Costa Mesa to Newport Beach in California. No injuries were reported.

"He was arrested for violation of felony evading, hit-and-run and reckless driving," Lt. Dondero said.

Jackson could be in court as early as Thursday.

"He's just been arrested, so nothing's been established," Lt. Dondero said. "If he's released on bail, that's an option. He would be given a court date to appear. If he's kept in custody, then he could go to court as early as maybe Thursday morning."

MMAjunkie.com was unable to reach Jackson's manager, Juanito Ibarra.

A set of photographs taken by a bystander captured Jackson being arrested next to a pick-up truck that bears a large portrait of the fighter. The photographs also showed police officers with their guns drawn while Jackson lie on his stomach in the middle of the road.

Jackson, 30, lost his UFC light-heavyweight title earlier this month at UFC 86. The loss -- his first in more than three years -- snapped a six-fight win streak. The longtime veteran of the now-defunct PRIDE Fighting Championships entered the UFC after the organization purchased -- and disbanded -- the World Fighting Alliance, a Las Vegas-based organization to which Jackson was signed.

MMAjunkie.com will have additional details on this story as they become available.

(Update, 7:57 p.m. ET: A source at the John Wayne Airport in Orange County, Calif. told MMAjunkie.com that Dana White recently de-boarded a private plane. According to Yahoo! Sports, White is there to post bail for Jackson.)

Details and exclusive photos of Quinton Jackson's alleged felony hit and run

As MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) reported earlier this evening, UFC light heavyweight Quinton Jackson has been arrested in California and faces felony hit-and-run charges after allegedly attempting to flee police.

The Costa Mesa Police Department has released additional details regarding the series of events leading to Jackson's arrest.

According to a press release, "Rampage" ignored an officer's directions to pull over and continued "weaving in and out of traffic" while forcing "pedestrians to flee for their lives" as he continued "running several red lights."

Jackson, who was allegedly driving a large pick-up truck that's adorned with his own image, continued operating the vehicle even after a tire rubber disintegrated underneath it (see exclusive photos below), according to the release.

The full release states:

A Motor Officer was monitoring traffic at the intersection of Newport Blvd and Broadway. He saw Jackson driving [south] bound weaving in and out of traffic, with a flat front left tire (and) speaking on his cell phone. The Motor Officer activated his lights and siren and initiated a traffic stop. Jackson ignored the Motor Officer and continued south bound on 17th weaving in and out of traffic to avoid being stopped.

Jackson drove over the raised center portion of the roadway at Cabrillo Ave. He lost control and drove up onto the sidewalk causing pedestrians to flee for their lives. Jackson regained control and continued southbound in the northbound lanes of Newport Blvd. As he crossed through the intersection with 17th St, he collided with a vehicle legally in the intersection. Jackson continued south bound on Newport Blvd running several red lights. The rubber from his left tire began to disintegrate at the PCH overpass. Jackson continued southbound onto the Balboa Peninsula running several more red lights, causing pedestrians to flee in terror. Jackson’s vehicle finally came to a stop at 18th St and Newport Blvd in the city of Newport Beach. Jackson was taken into custody by Costa Mesa Officers without incident.

Jackson was transported to the Costa Mesa City Jail and booked for; Felony Evading, Reckless Driving and Hit and Run. He was transported to the Orange County Jail and is being held in lieu of a $25,000.00 bail.

Prior to Motor Officer Barnes actions, Jackson had been involved in two separate collisions on the south bound 55 FWY. The CHP is taking those reports.

Jackson is a former Ultimate Fighting Champion title holder and fought under the name Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.

According to Costa Mesa Police Lieutenant Paul Dondero, neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected to have played a role in today's events. Jackson was being held on $25,000 bail, though as we reported earlier today, UFC President Dana White is already in California with plans to bail him out of jail.

UFC light heavyweight Quinton Jackson, who was arrested on Tuesday after an alleged hit-and-run accident and subsequent police chase, has posted bail and left the Orange County jail.

The Costa Mesa Police Department confirmed the news with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) this morning.

After being arrested for felony evading, hit-and-run and reckless driving, Jackson posted bail, which had been set at $25,000, overnight.

UFC president Dana White arrived in California on Tuesday via private plane, presumably to post bail for Jackson.

Additionally, according to fiveouncesofpain.com, reports that Jackson has been hospitalized appear unfounded.

maybe he really bet his whole fight purse on his fight with Forrest NOT going the distance as he stated he would on the show. He lost a shit-ton of money on that, he figured all was lost.... got liquored up, hopped in his camo pickup truck and went f ing GTA4 on the OC. I think it's plausible lol

Quinton Jackson picked up again by police for mental evaluation

A day after being arrested on a felony hit-and-run charge and posting $25,000 bail, UFC light heavyweight Quinton Jackson has been apprehended again by police in California, according to TMZ.com.

According to today's report, friends of "Rampage" waved down police at approximately 4:30 p.m. after they were "worried about his behavior."

Jackson was reportedly taken to a hospital for observation.

According to TMZ.com:
Quinton "Rampage" Jackson has been picked up by police again.
Sources say around 4:30 PM yesterday, friends who were hanging out with Rampage, waved down an Irvine police car after they were worried about his behavior. This, of course, following the insane chase the day before in which the UFC fighter hit several cars in his monster truck and was arrested at gunpoint.
We're told Irvine cops saw Rampage, deemed him a danger to himself and others, and took him to a hospital for observation. Rampage was very coopertive with police.
Cops won't officially confirm if it's a psychiatric hold.
According to NBCSports.com, Jackson was admitted to a hospital for a mental evaluation and is not being charged with any crime.

Fuck its coming apart for Rampage. I hate to see it b/c I love this fella. He and Forrest are/were great new faces for the light heavyweight division. Friendly rivals are just what most fans are really looking for. Shit like Tito vs Shamrock gets old and IMO isn't what the real fans want. Hopefully Rampage can get his shit together real soon

Baby dies after crash

Woman whom officials say ‘Rampage’ Jackson hit in car collision has miscarried, fiance says. No actions filed yet.

Huntington Beach woman who was more than 16 weeks pregnant and who police said was injured in a hit-and-run crash with mixed martial artist Quinton “Rampage” Jackson on the 55 Freeway two weeks ago has had a miscarriage, her fiance said Friday.

Holli Griggs, 38, was driving her 2007 Cadillac Escalade in the left lane on the southbound 55 Freeway just south of Bay Street on July 15 when Jackson’s gray-and-green pick-up truck sideswiped her as he drove along the median lane at about 45 mph, California Highway Patrol officials said.

Prosecutors have yet to file charges against Jackson, a former light heavyweight champion for the Ultimate Fighting Championship who remains free on $25,000 bail. Prosecutors would not comment on any potential charges due to Griggs’ miscarriage.

“Our office will make sure we take as much time as necessary to make a proper filing decision and including all evidence and medical information to make sure any charges that are filed are fair and accurate,” Dist. Atty. spokeswoman Farrah Emami said.

Efforts to reach Jackson and his representatives have been unsuccessful since he was arrested.

Griggs was unavailable for comment Friday. Her fiance, Bill Krebs, said doctors were immediately concerned when they noticed a significant loss of fluid in Griggs’ womb after the accident. Days before the crash, the couple had visited the doctor for an ultrasound, and Griggs was told she “had enough fluid for three babies,” Krebs said. She was pregnant with a boy.

Griggs was sent to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian after the accident, CHP officials said. Krebs said he and Griggs were then sent to pregnancy specialists at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Anaheim, where doctors noticed the problem.

The couple have retained an attorney but have yet to take legal action against Jackson.

“No amount of money will bring back my son,” Krebs said outside his home Thursday.

Jackson was arrested July 15 after Costa Mesa police say they chased him from 18th Street and Newport Boulevard, where he was weaving through traffic with a flat tire while talking on the phone all the way to 18th Street on Balboa Boulevard in Newport Beach.

Jackson ran several red lights, drove on concrete islands narrowly missing pedestrians, headed into oncoming traffic and hit another car, police said. Officers did not test Jackson for drugs or alcohol because he did not appear to be under the influence, Sgt. Bryan Glass said. He was released that night on bail.

The next day, Jackson was taken from his Irvine home and hospitalized for observation after police deemed he was a danger to himself and others. Jackson was upset by Forrest Griffin in a light heavyweight title bout in Las Vegas July 5.

i hope nothing TOO serious comes from this.... it's a terrible thing to happen...

don't think it's been said yet, but Rampage also fired his trainer/mentor shortly after the Griffin fight. i think that figures pretty prominently into this whole mess as well, since Ibarra was the one that was able to calm Rampage down. This is just a shame all the way around.

"Rampage" resurfaces in Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS – Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson said a combination of personal problems, and a lack of sleeping and eating, led to the July 15 incident culminating in his arrest in Costa Mesa, Calif.

The popular mixed martial arts fighter was arrested by Costa Mesa police following a car chase and booked into the Orange County jail on suspicion of felony evading, hit and run and reckless driving. Prosecutors have yet to file charges against Jackson.

"I'm not allowed to say everything," Jackson told Yahoo! Sports on Thursday in his first interview since the arrest. "I was hurt by some personal problems I had. It caused me not to eat and not to sleep. Emotional, yeah."

Earlier, Jackson had spoken briefly at a news conference with UFC president Dana White to promote UFC 87 at the Mall of America, his first public comments following the incident in which police allege he also swerved his truck onto a sidewalk near pedestrian traffic and continued driving on a rim after his tire blew out.

White, who introduced Jackson to a large crowd, said Jackson's consumption of too many energy drinks, combined with the lack of eating and sleeping, plus a split with trainer Juanito Ibarra (see: MMAjunkie.com's exclusive Juanito Ibarra interview), led to Jackson's problems last month.

One of the people Jackson allegedly sideswiped during the car chase on the 55 Freeway, 38-year-old Holli Griggs of Huntington Beach, Calif., was 16 weeks pregnant with a boy and suffered a miscarriage in the aftermath of the accident, her fiancé, Bill Krebs, told the Newport Beach Daily Pilot.

While Jackson did not address the loss of Griggs' unborn child, White tried to rationalize that the accident had little to do with the miscarriage.

"That one is out there like, 'He hit her and she lost her baby,'" White said. "It was a week later. He knocked her mirror off her car. Rampage said, and he'll tell you when you talk to him, 'I care about everybody. I care about all life. I would never hurt anybody.'

"That's the way he is," White said. "Now he's in a situation where somebody's trying to civil sue him and make some money. Absolutely not. Absolutely not, this is not a criminal thing. No way. I'm no lawyer and I'm no judge, (but) this stuff will be worked out in the court."

In the 72 hours following the accident, Jackson underwent psychological evaluations, White said, and was determined not to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

"He literally was sick and had delirium," White said.

Part of Jackson's problems, White said, stemmed from the split with Ibarra following Jackson's loss to Forrest Griffin on July 5 in Las Vegas. Jackson declined to divulge details when asked about Ibarra. When it was noted that Ibarra seemed like a father figure, Jackson grimaced.

"That's what hurts," Jackson said. "I can't say. You guys will find out soon enough."

Jackson said he already has begun training and is eager to fight again as soon as possible. He said he has been working with a boxing coach to improve his striking. Though Jackson believed he deserved to get the decision against Griffin, he did not blame the alleged incident on the loss.

"It was a close fight, but I thought I won," Jackson said. "I thought I did enough to win. I felt like I won the first round. I feel like I won the third round, and I felt like I won the fourth round. I felt like he won the … second and fifth. That's how I feel, but I'm not a judge.

"It is what it is. I don't care about fights, because I'm a fighter. That's not going to be the last fight I lose. Who cares about that? I don't care about winning the fight. Who cares? I'm going to come back, train hard and make more money."

Jackson said he was reluctant to speak because "I don't want to get into trouble with anybody." He thanked White and the UFC and said, "I love all these guys in the UFC. They've been great in supporting me. I'm happy to be out here and be a regular person again."

Quinton Jackson charged, arraignment set for Thursday

Quinton Jackson, charged with two felonies stemming from his hit-and-run drive through parts of southern California last month, will be arraigned Thursday.

Jackson, 30, was formally charged on Monday and faces one felony count of evading while driving recklessly and one felony count of evading a peace officer and driving against traffic, along with three misdemeanor counts of hit and run and one misdemeanor count of reckless driving.

His sentence could range from probation to up to three years in prison.

The former UFC light heavyweight champion is scheduled to appear in a Santa Ana, Calif. court at noon, Eastern Thursday at which time, he will enter pleas to the charges. Jackson was arrested by Costa Mesa police July 15, following an alleged hit-and-run accident and subsequent police chase. He is accused of driving onto a curb on the 55 Freeway and sideswiping two vehicles, causing damage to both. Jackson also is accused of failing to stop after hitting the two cars and fleeing the accident scene. Police eventually apprehended the fighter in Newport Beach.

The Orange County District Attorney's Office did not file charges against Jackson related to a miscarriage suffered by a woman whose car was allegedly sideswiped by Jackson. Holli Griggs, 38, was driving in the left lane on the southbound 55 Freeway when Jackson's pick-up truck sideswiped her sport utility vehicle, according to police. Griggs miscarried following the accident.

Jackson remains free on $25,000 bail.
