Preakness 133...

OK fellas. Laid off the Friday PIM card because of the track condition up there. I still might end up betting the 10th (Pimlico Special) and the 12th (Black Eyed Susan)...

I'll have my thoughts on the Preakness tomorrow morning, first thing... as well as a full card of races...

Got 7-to-1 on the '3' horse (Student Council)...

If he's at his best, I can see him winning.

Betting him across the board, and using the 2-7-9 underneath...

BSharpSonata is the best horse, but she fucked me in Kentucky two weeks back in the Oaks. Still, I can't see her getting beat if she runs her best.

The 4 could be tough. The 6 is getting a lot of attention at the window. But I like the '2' (Sweet Vendetta) best of all the horses behind the '5'.

Looks like the Pub was correct my friend. What you thinking tomorrow.

I'm just pissed Gotcha Gold got nipped at the end!!!

"Brown" a Big Package That Will Be Tough to Beat in Preakness

By Michael Dempsey | Date 05/16
(Saturday, May 17) After an authoritative victory in the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, only one foe he beat that day is even bothering to come back to face him again in the $1 million Preakness Stakes (G1) this afternoon at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland.

The undefeated colt will greet ten newcomers to the second jewel of the Triple Crown, all looking overmatched.

Gayego is the only Derby runner coming back for a rematch, and the colt finished 36 ¾ lengths behind the Derby winner at Churchill Downs.

Behindatthebar has been scratched out of the race. The Lexington Stakes (G2) winner has a bruised left front foot, and will not ship in to Pimlico from Belmont Park, where he is stabled with trainer Todd Pletcher.

That leaves a field of 12 for Saturday's race.

Can anyone beat the mighty Big Brown?

Despite picking him a full eight weeks before the Derby for a magazine article I wrote, I tried to beat him on Derby Day with Z Fortune.

I convinced myself that getting less than 3/1 on Big Brown breaking from the 20 post in just his third career start just was not good value.

Yeah, right.

I don't think I will go down that road again. While it will be tough to wager on Big Brown to win at 2/5, there is a possibility we could still see some decent exotics. Kentucky Bear is listed at 15/1 on the morning line, but probably will be a lower price in the other pools. Riley Tucker is one possible longshot that might spruce up the payoffs.

I am going to look for value, and there will be plenty to be found on Saturday, just not in the Preakness. There are 12 other races on the marathon Pimlico card. Toss in ten at Churchill Downs and another ten at Belmont Park, and that gives us 32 other races to ponder.

At Pimlico, in addition to the Preakness, there is a stakes filled card that includes the $250,000 Dixie Stakes (G2), $100,000 Hirsch Jacobs Stakes (G3), $150,000 Allaire Dupont Distaff Stakes (G2), $100,000 Gallorette Handicap (G3), $100,000 Maryland Sprint Handicap (G3) and the $100,000 Barbaro Stakes.

There is a early Pick 4 (races 4-7) that offers a $250,000 guaranteed pool and a late Pick 4 (races 9-12) with a $1 million guaranteed pool.

With Big Brown anchoring the late Pick 4, turning it into a Pick 3 unless you are going against the big favorite, the early Pick 4 looks more attractive from a wagering standpoint.

Out of the four races, the morning line favorite is my top pick in just one of the races in the sequence. That favorite is Roman Emperor, who will be tough to beat in the $100,000 Barbaro Stakes, which goes off as the seventh race on the card.

Here is a look at the Preakness:

PIM Race 12 Preakness S. G1 (6:15 et)
#7 Big Brown 1/2
#8 Kentucky Bear 15/1
#12 Gayego 8/1
#10 Riley Tucker 30/1

Analysis: #7 Big Brown is going to be very tough to beat even if he regresses a couple of lengths off his Derby win. I picked him to win for a magazine article a full eight weeks before the Derby and then got off him because of the short price and ended up with an ill advised pick of Z Fortune as I went shopping for a price. Can't bring myself to doing that again. Only knock is the quick turnaround as he faces all fresh faces except for #12 Gayego. However, he won with such authority at Churchill Downs it's hard to believe this guy is going to bounce off that effort. Tough to back him at such a short price and I guess we'll just have to play exotics and root for a chance to see a Triple Crown winner in three weeks.

#8 Kentucky Bear bounced back with a decent effort last out in the G1 Blue Grass, a third place finish. He was sent off at 4/1 in the G2 Fountain of Youth off his impressive maiden score in his debut and did not fire, checking in seventh. The colt makes just his fourth career start here and still appears to have some upside.

#12 Gayego is the lone runner other than the winner to come back after the Derby. He broke a step slow, had to steady in traffic in the opening furlong, was rank and packed it in readily less than a mile into the race, not pushed late by the jock. Blinkers go on here and he figures to be in the early mix with the hood added. Was up on the pace two back in his G2 Arkansas Derby win and that surface was kinder to outside stalkers and closers that day. Bounces back with a better effort here.

Wagering
WIN: #7 to win at 4/5 or better.
EX: 7 / 1,8,10,12
TRI: 7,8 / 1,7,8,10,12 / 1,7,8,10,12,13

Rex,

Followed you on the 2 (Vendetta)yesterday. Great pick and fun race to watch her speed in the mud. Look forward to your picks today and how you play the big one. Good luck and thanks for you consistently solid posts

Great day for me in the horses yesterday as I had a pair of 7-to-1 winners (Sweet Vendetta paid $17.40 in the Black Eyed Susan).

Maybe I should HOPE for a muddy track today. lol...

Back with the stakes races. The third is a Grade III!!! At 11:28 AM EDT... hahaha I love it.

OVERVIEW
While PETA and everybody else continues to focus on the breakdown of the second place Kentucky Derby finisher, Eight Belles, the racing world is focusing on the big chance a horse named Big Brown has of winning the triple crown. It hasn’t been done since 1978 but Big Brown has two things going for him: he’s very good and this year’s crop of three year olds is very bad. The Preakness field is weak and bordering on pathetic. Of the 20 horses that ran in the Kentucky Derby, only one is joining Big Brown in the Preakness. There’s a good reason for that. The second place finisher is dead and all the others were trounced by Big Brown. Their owners and trainers don’t see the point in getting wiped out again. Eleven horses that didn’t run in the Derby---in most cases because they weren’t good
enough---join Big Brown and 19
th place Derby finisher Gayego in the Preakness. If Big Brown repeats his Derby effort---a big IF---he’ll be running for the Triple Crown in three weeks in the Belmont Stakes. In that race his real challenger is awaiting, a Japanese horse named Casino Drive, who has run only two races but won both every bit as impressively as Big Brown has won his. A word about Eight Belle’s death. PETA, being idiots, has ripped racing for everything but the one aspect in which the sport deserves criticism. American racetracks are too hard and are often set up for speed. That was the case in the Derby where the Churchill Downs track superintendent, a menace to the race every year, sealed the track to help it dry out. Instead of focusing on this issue, the PETA morons are actually blaming Eight Belles’ jockey for trying hard to win the race. That’s his job. I’ll evaluate each horse in post position order.

THE FIELD
#1 MACHO AGAIN:
He’s coming off a win in a shorter and easier race and is likely to fade in the stretch here.

#2 TRES BORRACHOS:
He’s one of the horses that will be contending with Big Brown for the early lead. In his last start he set the pace in the Arkansas Derby before fading to third, losing to Gayego.

#3 ICABAD CRANE
: He’s a local horse who won a softer race last month at Pimlico,
the site of the Preakness. His speed figures are way too slow to suggest he could win but he’s the type of horse who will keep running. At big odds, he could finish third or fourth.
http://www.preakness.com/Racing/Contenders/IcabadCrane.htm

#4 YANKEE BRAVO:
He’ll be far back early and may close some to finish as high as
seventh.
http://www.preakness.com/Racing/Contenders/YankeeBravo.htm

#5 BEHINDATTHEBAR:
He’s won two in a row including a Grade 2 stakes last out
four weeks ago. He’s improving for top trainer Todd Pletcher and could finish in the top
five.
http://www.preakness.com/Racing/Contenders/Behindatthebar.htm

#6 RACECAR RHAPSODY
: He’s like a lot of others in this field---decent but not great.
I think he’s one of the better of the also-rans and his off the pace style of running gives him a chance to close late and finish in the top three or four. Don’t ignore him in trifecta and superfecta bets.

#7 BIG BROWN
: His arrogant trainer was crowing before the Derby that there was no
way his horse would lose. He was right. Big Brown’s Derby win was spectacular as he romped despite starting from a wide post position and racing wide the whole race. He has early speed but doesn’t need the lead and so far has crushed every horse he’s faced. If you’re looking for negatives, trainer Richard Dutrow isn’t quite as confident this time. The horse does have bad feet and racing back in two weeks after a hard race
could compromise him. Still, he’d have to regress badly to lose. If he does indeed fail to fire, the payoffs will be huge which may be a reason to try to beat him. On paper, however, he is an absolute standout.

#8 KENTUCKY BEAR
: This horse is making only the third start of his life and would
have run in the Kentucky Derby but didn’t have enough earnings to crack the field. His first race in January in Florida was spectacular and he came back to run very well in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland five weeks ago. Skipping the Derby is probably a blessing as it gave this inexperienced horse more time to mature. His stalking style is a big asset. He’s going to be a very good horse and might be one already.

#9 STEVIL
: He has only one win in six career starts and has never run fast enough to even make an impact in this race.

#10 RILEY TUCKER
: He finished a decent third behind Behindatthebar in his last
outing despite starting from a bad post position. He’s very similar to several others in here who have realistic chances to finish as high as second. A win would be a big surprise.
http://www.preakness.com/Racing/Contenders/RileyTucker.htm

#11 GIANT MOON
: This is the only one of the big longshots that I like much. He has
good tactical speed and will try to stalk behind Big Brown. If the star falters, this horse could be in position to make the first run into the stretch. He is bred for the distance and is training very well. If you want to try to break the bank, here’s your guy.

#12 GAYEGO
: He won the Arkansas Derby in April but finished 19th in the Kentucky
Derby, a whopping 37 lengths behind Big Brown. Nonetheless, his trainer and owner must believe the Derby was an aberration or they wouldn’t be here. He had a poor start in the Derby and will be wearing blinkers for the first time in this race in attempt to keep him focused. This is one of the three or four horses that look like logical contenders if Big Brown doesn’t fire.
http://www.preakness.com/Racing/Contenders/Gayego.htm

#13 HEY BYRN
: His 86-year old owner wants to be in a Triple Crown race before she
dies. As for the horse, he’s overmatched.

PREDICTION
Horses listed in order of likelihood of winning
HORSE PROJECTED ODDS
#7 BIG BROWN 3-5
#8 KENTUCKY BEAR 12-1
#12 GAYEGO 8-1
#11 GIANT MOON 35-1
#10 RILEY TUCKER 20-1
#6 RACECAR RHAPSODY 18-1
#5 BEHINDATTHEBAR 10-1
#3 ICABAD CRANE 35-1
ANALYSIS
Unless Big Brown’s chronic foot problems resurface, he’s a likely winner as he’s not only shown brilliance but meets a field that is unusually soft for a Triple Crown race. Kentucky Bear has the most upside and may be ready to fire a big race. Gayego has to be considered as the Derby was his only clunker. Giant Moon is a long shot with at least some chance. It’s very unlikely any of the others can win.
WAGERING STRATEGY
I’m not going to suggest specific bets because there just isn’t much value in the race because of the heavy wagering that will occur on Big Brown. If he wins, all payoffs will be small. I personally will play exactas using Big Brown and my next three horses and trifectas using my top four in the first two spots and my next four in the third spot. If you’re looking for some longshot action, box my top four in exactas and trifectas and
throw in win bets on Kentucky Bear and Giant Moon. Other than that, you’re on your own.
WATCHING THE RACES
There will be seven and a half hours of live national TV coverage of the entire card at Pimlico, including the Preakness. ESPN-2 is on from 10 to 11 Saturday morning and ESPN takes over from 11 to 4. NBC coverage on Channel 4 begins at 3:30. The Preakness itself goes off a little after 5:00. You can wager on the Preakness and all the Pimlico races (and any other tracks) at Dairlyand dog track in Kenosha, Oneida Casino in Green Bay, Ho-Chunk in Baraboo or any of the Illinois OTBs. You can bet on any of
these races, including the Preakness, and watch live racing at Arlington Park, northwest of Chicago.

good. believe it or not...my horse in the past five races has finished 2nd...in all 5...never happened to me before.

That's amazing... I've had 2 or 3 of those same horses.

I've been extremely busy fellas. Tomorrow's baseball, stalking the UMP in Boston ("E" alert), watching the hockey and bases and horses and talking to friends and monitoring the baseball moves.

No time for any big writeup.

In the Dixie, going with the '3' - Buffalo Man.. He got beat at Keeneland in the G2 Commonwealth and switches back to the grass here. He gets reunited with Prado, who was aboard for a Florida stakes win on the grass and if I can get 5-to-1 or better, I'll be there. Using the 4, 2 and 8 underneath.

ok well i have some money on Bodog and i like their horse racing interface so i figured i would try my luck with The Preakness.... lets see if Big Brown can live up to all the hype today.... 'an_horse'

my wagers.... :shake:

EXA $2
7/8, 7/10, 7/11, 7/12

TRI $2
7/8/10, 7/8/11, 7/8/12, 7/8/2
7/12/8, 7/12/10, 7/12/11, 7/12/2

lol ill be honest i know nothing about horses im just tailing rexy. hhaa i dont even know if i put in my wagers right

Well, fellas... The other undercard races were no good.

In the Preakness, I'm using the 7 on top of everything. Big Brown is not going to lose to any of these three years olds unless he beats himself.

Let's try it like this...

7 over 4,6,8,10,12 in exactas, trifectas and superfectas...

Well, I lost a little more money than I wanted to when I already knew what was going to happen. The only way I salvaged anything was to bet him -240 against the field yesterday when the lines were released. I only wish I had bet more...

Last race is awful chalky. Going with the the 7... In his first race, he lost by 2 1/2 lengths and finished fourth - he was racing wide and eventually flattened out in the stretch The runner up in the race was Make Me Proud, who came back to graduate in his next outing last Sunday. The Trombetta barn that is 26% winners (with a positive ROI) with second time starters.

Whee.... The jackpot in the last. Exacta, Trifecta, and Superfecta caps off what ended up being a great weekend in Baltimore...

Look forward to seeing you all in 3 weeks for Belmont week wagering. I doubt they can beat that monster, but we'll have plenty of time to debate it...
