How do you seperate the teams who can afford lose and still make it due to a rival losing at a later date, because technically Philly isn't out of the playoffs.

It's understandable from a psychological standpoint. A lot of pressure on one side to win, while the other is essentially playing with house money. Especially at the professional level where most teams are neck and neck from a talent standpoint. College level sports not so much, of the top 6 teams in the playoff hunt only FSU didn't cover the spread. Even that was off of a meaningless last second touchdown.
