Please help an old man out

For the last two weeks Ohio State has been ranked #2. But each Tuesday night the CFP rankings have them listed as #5 seed. Same thing for #12 Boise St the seeding has them #4 with first round bye. It's all well and good for the talking heads to simply say rankings and seedings are two different things but this makes no sense. Can anyone explain this to me? GL

The top 4 seeds in the Playoff (and those who get the first round bye’s) are reserved for each P4 conference winner. Ohio St is behind Oregon in the b10 standings, so Ducks take that 1 spot and Ohio St can’t be better than 5 bcs 2, 3 and 4 are for the other 3 conference winners

Boise moved up to one of the top 4 seeds by virtue of being ranked ahead of the potential BIG 12 Conf winner so they vaulted into a bye seed.
