Plane Crash-Brazilian Serie A Team Chapecoense

Awful news out of Colombia, the charter flight carrying this club has crashed on their way to playing a Copa Sudamericana match in Medellin tonight. I don't follow South American club stuff at all, but I'm guessing at least some of you know this club as they play in Brazil's highest division. Really surprised in my lifetime this hasn't happened more frequently than it has (I remember the lower level hockey team in Russia and of course the Oklahoma State basketball plane, although that one didn't destroy the entire team). This one sounds bad, and an entire top division club may well have been involved. Hope it turns out better than it sounds, but not counting on it.

Saw that on Twitter. Reports out of Colombia are saying there are survivors, but not much info.

Last I've seen because I can't read espanol is that there are survivors, plane ran out of fuel circling the airport. That's about all I've been able to gather. Please update if you find anything mong.

As far as I can tell, 81 on board, 72 passengers and 9 crew. Believe I saw something confirming at least 6 survivors.

76 dead, 5 survivors. Just a terrible tragedy, and a tremendous blow to Chapeco as these smaller soccer teams are usually all these communities have to rally around (similar to a college team in a campus town).

WOWOW.

Had just read about them this weekend, incredible rise thru the ranks going from the Brazilian Serie D in 2009 to the top level A in 5 years. Can't imagine any of the Argentinians sleeping last night.

Last time something like this happened in the US I believe was 1977 when the Evansville University basketball team in it's first year in D-1 went down in a plane crash on December 13th, 1977. All but one member of the team died and eerily that player, David Furr who missed the flight due to injury, was killed in an auto accident 2 weeks later.

No sign of fuel in the wreckage, and from what I've read this plane has no fuel dump system in case of emergency landing, so it suggests the plane just ran out of fuel... which seems incredible if true but we should know more fairly soon as the black boxes have been found already.

Anyway, tragic accident and can't imagine how the survivors must feel... The doc 'Sole survivor' (2013) was interesting as it showed the story of a few people who were the only survivors of a plane crash and how they managed to continue their lives afterwards.
