Due to an event no one is turning up to we have a 2 week gap between The Open and the PGA Championship.

The best form guide in recent years has been the Bridgestone the week prior to the PGA. In the 9 years since it moved to the preceeding week, every PGA Champion has finished in the top 22 at Firestone. However, we won't have that this year. I'll be hesitant to use this weeks Canadian Open as a similar guide. The Open is the most mentally draining of all tournaments, and players backing up and then contending may have nothing in the tank come Baltusrol. Looks like Day (defending at both Canada and PGA) and Dustin are backing up this week.

Of the past 15 winners, 13 had won on the PGA or Euro Tour that season. Should make creating a shortlist easy

Course form for Baltusrol is limited, so we might have to look at similar courses. Baltusrol is an A.W. Tillinghast course, and he also designed Winged Foot, Bethpage Black, Medinah, Ridgewood and Firestone.

Winged Foot hosted the 2006 US Open (Ogilvy) and 1997 PGA (Love)

Bethpage Black 2002 US Open (Eldrick) and 2009 US Open (Glover)

Medinah 1999 PGA and 2006 PGA (both Eldrick) and 2012 Ryder Cup (Europe)

Ridgewood 2008 Barclays (Vijay), 2010 Barclays (Kuchar) and 2014 barclays (Mahan)

looking at all the winners at the above courses each winner had a touch of class. The exceptions is Glover (rain affected draw). Sometime in the next week I need to look at what stats were important in those events and see if there is a familiar trait to Tillinghast courses

Until then, a shortlist can be created from the winners this season. I think I can safely remove Badds and the Snake Chalmer

Now the time for the PGA Championship trends

Already mentioned the importance of seasons winners, so that is our starting point.

Of the last 10 winners, eight have been ranked inside the OWGR top 25 at the time. The exceptions were Yang and Bradley.

Seven of the last 10 had finished in the Top 10 previously. Yang and Bradley were again the exceptions, with the other being Harrington (who had already won two British Opens).

Recent form is important. I mentioned in the above post about Top 22 at Bridgestone, but that is worthless this year. However, nine of the last 10 had finished in the top 10 in one of their two previous starts. Bradley the exception again.

Finally, being the final Major of the year we can use that as a reference. 70% of the recent winners finished in the Top 10 of a previous major that year.

The one that intrigues me is Rory. He is really coming into form. He did well on the wrong side of the draw at Troon and I think he has a big 12 months ahead of him. However, as was pointed out to me, all his wins have been low scores. He has won 16 times on the US and Euro Tours, with a winning score ranging from -12 to -23. That is an average winning score of -17.25 and a winning margin of just under 3. His wins in Majors have ranged from -13 to -17, with an average of -15.5 and a margin of 4.75. The winning score here in 2004 was -4, so I don’t think this course will suit him.

I’m putting the pen through Stenson just because of how physically, mentally and emotionally draining his win would have been.

Dustin makes a lot of sense. He has made the Top 10 in each of the majors this season, and since his suspension he has finished in the Top 10 in six of the seven majors. Unbelievable form. However, this century, finishing inside the Top 10 in all four Majors in a calendar year has happened eight times. Four of those eight won at least one of the Majors. Only one has won the PGA, and that was Eldrick at his peak in 2000 (3[SUP]rd[/SUP] leg of the Tiger Slam). It’s a real tough ask for Dustin to keep it up. Add to that is my concern about how draining an Open is, and having to play the following week, and then again in the PGA.

That leaves us with Spieth and Grace. As was pointed out in the telecast on the weekend, Spieth has not shot a round in the 60’s in a Major since his Sunday meltdown at Augusta. He has a similar profile to Rory, in that seven of his nine pro wins have been when he has shot -10 or better (US Open -5 and Players Championship -9). Branden Grace finished 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] in this event last year, and Top 5 at the past two US Opens. I can’t forgive him though, for the tee shot on 16 in last years US Open (80-1 :enraged.

Trends and precedents tend to repeat themselves in golf the majority of the time. Occasionally we get a Keegan Bradley result. Pending the course research and relevant stats, I’ll be working around the guys that fit 3 or 4 of the criteria.

Not much to go on in the way of stats. The top 5 of the PGA when last held here
Driving Accuracy: Average 42, Min 14, Max 61
Driving Distance: Average 39, Min 2, Max 75
GIR: Average 16.6, Min 1, Max 46
Total Putts: Average 27, Min 3, Max 36

Phil won the event, but was 75th in distance. He sacrificed distance for accuracy (37th), which gave him a second shot from the fairway and his 8th in GIR. The 46th in GIR was Thomas Bjorn, but he was third in putting. So it looks like GIR is the most important stat. I think putting was skewed due to the small nature of the greens, and players like Bjorn had good scrambling numbers (the tour-tips site doesn't have scrambling stats for this event for some reason).

I read earlier today that 12 of the last 15 Major winners all started 50/1 or shorter, so I won't be scouting too wide. Sergio needs to be added to the list that fit all criteria. Although he has burnt me many times in the past he fits the bill, 33/1 was too good to pass up. He has finished top 5 the past two Majors and the +650 I found for Top 5 was good. Ladbrokes put up +250 on either Dustin, Day, Rory or Spieth winning. I have that priced at +190 so it's locked in as my saver. Dufner is 110/1 on Belfair. Former winner, lost another in a playoff, and was 5th the year before that. Three Top 10's in the US Open, including this year, a winner in January at Pebble Beach, ranked 8th in GIR this season and 50th in accuracy. There should also be some 20/1 about Top 5 floating around

I didn;t see much of the tournament, but from what I saw today Walker deserved the win. Day got on the greens, but left himself with too long putts to give himself a chance
