Pens new style is gonna make them an over machine

Gandolf

Leader of the Van Buren Boys
Bylsma has them playing a much more aggressive forecheck style than Therrien did, and that's gonna lead to more offense at both ends of the ice.

Will be interesting to see how long they can keep the pace going. They've run out of gas on this back end of a back to back. Lucky for them they only have two more back to backs this season.

BTW, Crosby is absolutely killing their power play. 3 goals in over 300 minutes playing on the man advantage is just horrendous. It's like in basketball when your center has the ball at the top of the key, they know he's no threat to shoot so everyone lays off when he holds the rock and plays the passing lanes. Basically allows the other team play 4 on 4 with everyone else and choke off shooting opportunities with the other guys.

Sid's not having that great of a year in many ways. I still hold to the idea that their off-season really hurt them.

You are right Gandolf...I'd like to see how the players adapt to it, if they can get the 2-1-2 forecheck going and clog the neutral zone enough to force a dump in or turnover it can be very effective. But as you said, right now they are tired and cannot successfully pull it off. Should make for entertaining hockey as we saw today.

Well, looks like the Pens will need a decent partner to hit these overs. Pens have had a few good chances, but the Islanders have squandered three 2 on 1s, a breakaway, and rang one off the crossbar with an open net from 8 feet away. No score late in the 2nd period.

I laid off with Crosby out, but I think this theory is a good one--and that we'll need some unders to help create value.

There should be opportunities coming up. We just need to keep our eyes open.

Gonna nibble on the Over 6 +115 today against the Hawks.

Pens with 15 goals in 5 games in the Bylsma era.

Hawks with 22 goals in past 6 games.

Fleury and Huet are both below average in save % their last 10.

Joe, Sid is questionable for tonights game. Chicago's leading goal scorer is also out.

Hmmm, now I like it less. I just sort of assumed Sid would be back. Thanks for the info, Matt.

i played over 6 + pens ml tonight.... let's see what happens...

BOL fellas :shake:

Good start, 2-1 pens after 1. Good action. Malkin and Kane haven't even shown up yet. Hawks defensemen are unrepentant with their slapshots. Probably a dozen slappers fired, maybe 3 got to the net.

Nice hit guys, Toews showed up tonight. Love watching the blackhawks for this exciting reason:

Shots:
Pit - 24
Chi - 42

Tough call today vs. Dallas. Stars have not been a good offensive team lately, so Pens will have to do the heavy lifting. Good news is that the number is only 5 1/2.

Stars/Turco have allowed 7 goals on 40 shots the last two games. Power play is sputtering at 8.7% last 5 games. But the PK has been solid. They've lost 4 in a row and are desperate to win before heading west for three games. But they're also 3-7 on the back half of back-to-backs.

Pens on the other hand were a PK disaster in Chicago, and the PP has been average at best, with or without Crosby (actually looks better without IMO). Huge win to start the road trip in Chicago, like Dallas a win puts them in the top 8.

Correlated parlays are perfectly matched today, interesting:

1 unit pays 2.74 with Pens/over
1 unit pays 2.74 with Dallas/under

Gonna play a 1/2 unit on each, thinking this one breaks one of two ways: either Dallas scores first and plays a lockdown game in response to the last two debacles and their 4 game losing streak, or the Pens score first, the pace stays frenetic and the floodgates open with two goalies that have been less than stellar.

BOL!

P.S. - Pens are now +2500 to win the Eastern Conference on Bookmaker. That's a nice number that'll only go down in March when they have an 8 game homestand that will probably solidify their spot in the top 8. Booking it now and will look for some hedge options come playoff time.

that is one sick ass number to get at BM .... would love to see it hit! :shake:

Disappointing miss considering it was 4-1 with almost 14 minutes to go, then the Pens had a power play for the last 3 minutes of the game, including a 5 on 3, and point hogs that they are the top unit was out there firing away for about 2 1/2 minutes of it.

Staal does very nicely as the number 2 center. I wonder what the Pens could haul in by trading Crosby? j/k (sort of).

Takes two to get to an over and today Dallas didn't do their part.

Keeps these totals reachable, though, when these unders come through when they probably shouldn't.

Was gonna lay off with the trade deadline looming, but after seeing Ramo's numbers, with TB producing good offense the last ten games (3 or more goals 5 times), the Pens still rolling (24 goals in 7 Bylsma games) and with 6 at even money I'm gonna take a bite.

Over 6 +100

Bleh, good win for the Pens, but if the Bolts could lift a puck they'd have had 5. Fleury basically laid across the bottom of the goal all game and dared them to beat him high, and they couldn't. Ramo had plenty of trouble with rebounds, but the Pens could only punch in 3. Malkin with a donut tonight, wow. Versus had the scoring chances over 30 for the game, 66 SOG is a good number. No help from the refs, 4 PPs for the entire game ties the low on a busy night. Oh well.

Yeah, the 'Ning couldn't finish. Fleury played a good third period, but mostly it was TB's inability to put it in the back of the net. Tough one, especially with Malkin not even getting on the sheet and the Pens still putting three up there.

3/5

Took the over in tonights matchup against the Panthers...5.5 (-120). Want to see if Pens. can keep the pace going.

sticking with the over too.... i like all the thoughts here, so im probably going to be playing it for the rest of the season.....

small parlay on the over + pens ml tonight too :shake:

Was out so I didn't play it tonight. Guerin's playing and Crosby's back so watch the offense go into the dumper. No Gonchar tonight either.

2 quick goals in the late 2nd and now we're back in the hunt....

'an_horse'

Pens keep doing their part, but Fleury is playing well when the D hangs him out to dry (stopped a clean breakaway tonight) and catching breaks at other times (1 bell ringer off the post, a number of rebounds came out to wrong-sided Panthers who couldn't handle them).

Over/under at WAS could be 6 1/2. Only the two games at Toronto had 6 1/2 lines.

Well, the good news is that if Fleury's going to keep doing this we can start laying the 1.5 pretty consistently.
