Indiana Injuries
Small forward T.J. Warren has already been missing for Indiana. He was an important figure in Indiana’s offense as its fourth-leading scorer and an efficient option.
Tonight, though, is unique in that possibly also teammate Victor Oladipo might be absent.
Oladipo gave a tremendous effort especially on defense in yesterday’s game. He played a total of 37 minutes, which is 13 more minutes than he had played in any other game this season.
Since he returned from surgery, Oladipo had not played in a back-to-back.
So while Oladipo isn’t showing up on injury reports, different sources have him pegged as ‘questionable’ for tonight’s game.
His fitness is important to Indiana since he is the team’s third-leading scorer.
Without either Oladipo or Warren, point guard Malcolm Brogdon and power forward Domantas Sabonis by themselves would form the bulk of Indiana’s offense.
Brogdon vs. Curry
Scoring-wise, it will be difficult for Brogdon to keep pace with Warrior star Steph Curry’s scoring output because of the unique situation in which the latter finds himself.
Curry is not the type of player who has consecutive poor shooting performances.
For example, after mustering less than 20 points on December 25 in Milwaukee, he scored 36 in the following game.
After scoring 13 points on January 6 against the Clippers, he scored 38 points in his next game.
So Curry enjoys a strong bounce-back situation today after he flopped in his last game.
Brogdon’s defensive rating has anyhow been poor, which is reflected in the recent consistency with which opposing point guards are producing great games for themselves when facing off with Brogdon and his Pacers.
Draymond Green
Indiana’s current extra reliance on Sabonis is problematic given the return of Warrior power forward Draymond Green.
At first, Green was rusty and didn’t play a lot of minutes. But now he has six games under his belt.
Green’s impact is primarily defensive. He has been named to the All-Defensive First Team or Second Team in every year of his professional career.
His defense makes him worth a lot of points to his team because he’s great at limiting the nearest shooter’s openness.
Eric Paschall
Backup Warrior power forward Eric Paschall provides an important number of minutes because of the boost that he gives the offense when he’s on the court.
Since playing Chicago on December 27, Paschall has been extremely efficient, converting upwards of 60 percent of his field goal attempt while accruing between 10 and 20 points.
In terms of PPP, he’s especially efficient as a roller in pick-and-roll actions.
Andrew Wiggins
Indiana’s injury situation creates greater pressure on small forward Justin Holiday.
As a whole, Pacer wing defenders have been terrible. Sacramento’s high scoring output yesterday was largely a product of Pacer wing defenders allowing dribble penetration in the paint, which then overwhelmed Pacer rim protectors
Holiday, in particular, was poor defensively as he yielded 30 points to his Sacramento counterpart.
This season, Holiday is not showing the effectivity on defense that he showed in previous years. HIs regression is measured by the steep difference in defensive rating.
Small forward Andrew Wiggins will thrive as Golden State’s second-leading scorer between Curry and the ascending Paschall.
The Verdict
Whereas Indiana is limited in who it can rely on offensively, Golden State’s top scorers are primed for a strong performance tonight.
Curry enjoys an edge over Brogdon with the former’s bounce-back situation. Paschall can compete with Sabonis’ scoring efficiency since Paschall is playing very well and Sabonis will often be defended by Green.
The other key player is Andrew Wiggins, who as small forward enjoys a strong advantage over his struggling defender, Justin Holiday.
In addition to taking the Warriors, take the “under” given the unique lack of (rested) scoring talent available to the Pacers.
