Goodbye to Romance College Football
Sun Belt Winners:

Iowa State outgained ULL 303-272 (but ULL had 4.9-4.3 ypp edge). ISU lost two turnovers (fum at own 42 led to missed ULL FG and INT at own 14 led to missed ULL FG). Those turnovers washed with ULL’s two empty RZ possessions ( the a-fore mentioned missed 27y and 30y FGs). ISU led 7-0, but ULL tied on KO ret TD. ISU then led 14-7, 14-10 when ULL got a 78y TD for the 17-14 lead. An 83y punt ret TD made it 24-14 and a 11p 56y 7min drive for the final 31-14 (final TD on 4th-and-1 with :10 left).

Kansas State had just 91y rushing (2.3ypc) and finished 1 of 11 on 3rd down. It looked good for K St in the first half as they blk’d a punt on the opening drive of the game and led 7-0 after a 2p 19y “drive”. Arkansas State tied, but then K ST D got an INT to set up a 7p 49y TD drive...14-7, next K St possession would go 7p 92y for a 21-7 lead. ASU used a double pass for a 48y TD...21-14 mid 2nd. K St was driving, at the A14 with a first down, but an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty created 1st-and-25 pushing them back and ultimately leading to a missed 43y FG. KSt roughed the passer and ASU got a 25y run, but later would fumble from the K09 with 1:26 left. At their own 11 K St just took it to the half. K St was called for 5 penalties for 58y in the half to ASU’s zero. In the 3rd ASU put together a 12p 70y drive, but missed a 38y FG. Later in the 3rd ASU would have a 58y run on their way to a 21-21 tie. K St missed a second FG early 4th. ASU was going for 4th down at the K34 and a PI call gave them FD which would lead to a 28-21 lead still early 4th. K ST converted their own 4th down enroute to a tying TD...28-28 6-1/2 min left. ASU punted and K St drove for a 35y FG and the 31-28 lead 2-1/2min left. ASU rather easily went 7p 65y scoring the go-ahead TD with :38 left. Total Yards were 489-374 (6.9-5.4) in favor of ASU. ASU was –2 TO. KSt owned TOP 34-26 minutes. Thompson missed on a few deep balls, one a wide open guy in the EZ, think it was in the 3rd Q, maybe on their missed FG possession.

App St had 308y rushing and owned a 29-16 FD edge finishing with a 512-286 TY (7.2-4.8) edge in the 35-20 win. App St fumbled at the goal line on their opening possession. An offside penalty on 4th down allowed Charlotte to keep the ball and go 12p 91y for a 7-0 lead! An offense 15y personal foul penalty on a later App St possession put them in a hole. App St eventually tied and went up 14-7. Then led 14-10. App St had a 1st H ending FGA blk’d. Teams traded INTs and Charlotte made is 14-13. App St made is 21-13, but Charlotte ret’d the KO...21-20. 28-20 when App st fumbled, setting Charlotte up at the A20, but Char was SOD. 35-20 when Charlotte’s final pass was INT’d with :32 left. Charlotte threw 2 INTs, App St lost a total of 3 turnovers. App St had 3 empty RZ possessions (4 scores in 7 trips) to Charlotte’s 2 scores in 3 trips. App St was 60% 3rd down to Charlotte’s 28%.

Campbell scored TD on their opening drive and Georgia Southern responded with a 41y FG. Campbell immediately came back with a 40y TD (xpt no good)…13-3. GaSo drove down with a 1st down at the C10, but ultimately would be SOD (bad FG snap or fake?). Campbell would rough the GaSo punter and Eagles would drive down with a 1st down at the C23 and later would kick a 36y FG. 13-6 at halftime. GaSo fumbled the 3rd Q KO and Campbell started their drive at the G26 and would lead 20-6. GaSo came back down and on 4th down made it 20-13. Early 4th Q Campbell muffed the punt snap handing GaSo the ball on the C09. 20-20! GaSo then went 6p 95y to take the 27-20 lead with 6:35 left. Punts. Campbell took over with under 2 minutes left, converted a 4th down and would score TD with :15 left! The team was called for delay of game, but still opted to go for 2 where their pass was incomplete. Campbell’s QB Hajj-Malik Williams was the Big South’s Preseason Off POY. He went 17-27-237-2-0 and led team in rushing 11att-73-TD. Shai Werts for the Eagles was just 7-14-53-1-0 passing, but also led his team in rushing 14att-155-TD. JD King added 18att-74-TD. Ga Southern was without 33 inactive players, 6 or 7 of which were starters. Total Yards were 369-346 for Campbell (6.4-5.3 ypp).

Coastal Carolina led 28-0. CC did have two of their four TDs set up by turnovers on short fields. Thanks to 3 straight TD drives of 89, 72 and 78 yards in the second half, Kansas outgained CC 367-318. KU executed a nice onside kick recovery during their comeback attempt, but refs called offside on KU – in what appeared to be a phantom penalty. Sun Belt officiating crew.

ACC

UNC won 31-6, fortunately for the Heels, Syracuse didn’t capitalize on their sloppy play. UNC only scored 10 points through the first 3 quarters. Syracuse was SOD at the N22 following an INT, and missed a FG after starting drive at N21 following a fumbled UNC punt (also dropped a pass in the EZ that possession) and later had a punt return TD called back on a blindside block. Take away those gifted opportunities and UNC dominated on the stat sheet outgaining them 463-202 (6.6-2.8). UNC’s D racked up 7 sacks and 9 other QB hurries.

Georgia Tech moved the ball inside the FSU 25 yard line 4x in the 1st H but trailed 10-0 at HT (two INTs and two blk’d FGs). GT appeared ready to take a 14-13 lead, but had a third kick blk’d so it was tied 13-13. GT D got a sack fumble setting Jacket O at the F11 leading to a 32y FG and the 16-13 lead. FSU’s final two possessions then ended in another fumble and SOD. TY in GT’s favor were 438-307 which included out passing them 277-198 and out rushing them 161-109. GT has defeated FSU 4 straight in the regular season (2020, 2015, 2009. 2008) although FSU did win 2 in ACC title game vs GT in that span.

Western Kentucky scored 14 points off a total of 5 yards of offense following botched punts by Louisville. WKU did fumble at the L09 and was SOD at the L03 on their final drive. LV ended the game at the W07. LV had 22-12 FD, 487-248 TY (6.8-4.3) and 56-33% advantage on 3rd down conversions. Cunningham went 19-34-343-3-1 (10.1y per att) to Pigrome’s 10-23-129-1-0

Clemson led 27-0 HT with TY being 353-113 (7.06-3.89 ypp). Clemson started putting in reserves mid 3rd Q with the score 37-3. Through 3 Q the TY were 518-222 (7.61-4.6). Wake Forest kicked a FG mid 4th to make it 37-6 and a PI on 4th down kept a late WF drive alive and Deacs made is 37-13 late 4th. TY for the game were 561-330.

Big Xll

Texas Tech scored TDs on 3 of their first 5 possessions and led 21—3 mid 2nd Q. Houston Baptist did throw INT at the T01 early 2nd Q. HBU made it 21-10 on a 65y TD and TT could’t get anything going their next 3 possessions into the 3rd Q. Halftime yards were just 282-258 for TT. HBU got another 65y TD and a FG to make the score 21-20 TT. TT then stretched the lead back out to 35-20, but then HBU hit third 3rd long TD of the game, this one a 75y catch and run..35-27. TT was SOD at the H04 on 4th-and-1 with 5:25 left. HBU drove down the field scoring, but 2pt no good 35-33. They kicked off deep with 3:23 left, but TT was able to kill the clock. TT finished with a 624-600 TY edge (6.6-8.0).

Tulane’s QB Keon Howard fumbled the opening possession, but then South Alabama fumbled at the T01 on first down. Tulane was SOD at SA37 and then USA was SOD at the T41. In the 2nd Q USA’s #2 QB Lovertich hit a 34y TD pass to Baker…7-0. Tulane answered, but missed the xpt…7-6. Lovertich threw his second TD…14-6 HT. USA would lead 21-6 and Tulane was SOD. Was 24-6 mid 3rd Q before Tulane started the comeback, scoring a TD…24-13. On the second play of the 4th Q Tulane made it 24-19 (sacked on 2pt att). Late 4th Q Tulane made it 27-24 (2pt good) with 3 minutes left. With 1:38 left USA’s D was forcing Tulane to punt, but a personal foul leaping penalty was called as a defender jumped to try and block the punt but flew into the 3-man wall directly in front of the punter. Tulane killed the clock. TY were pretty even 394-386 for Tulane. Wave outrushed them 203-65. Tulane was only 1 of 11 3rd down in the game to USA’s 8 of 17. USA had just 96 yards in the 2nd H and punted on their last 5 possessions.

South Florida was +3 turnovers, but none led to any points (SOD, SOD, end of game). It was just 7-6 when Citadel was punting from their own EZ and the punter dropped the snap and got off an ill-fated punt attempt which was caught by USF in the EZ tying the NCAA record for shortest punt return TD of zero yards. USF had 404-284 TY edge (6.3-3.9) and outrushed them 302-200 (7.7-3.7) despite being without 3 OL starters. On the other hand USF passed for just 102 yards on 25 attempts (3 different QBs). Each team missed a FG. Several USF players were quarantined after a positive covid case among the team.

Texas scored on 7 of their first 8 possessions, the other was a missed FG. UTEP didn’t cross midfield until their 6th drive of the game and then again on their 7th both in the 2nd Q where they moved 10p 43y and 11p 46y for a missed FG and a made FG. At that point Texas was leading 38-3. On the Miner’s first drive of the 3rd, they again moved into UT territory with a 10p 55y drive, but went into the EZ on 4th and 2 from the T20 were it was incomplete. Pretty nice throw actually that was dropped. It never got any easier for UTEP even once Texas started heavily rotating in their depth players, no garbage yards or points here. Texas outgained them 689-233.

Oklahoma led 31-0 at the end of the 1st Q with a yardage advantage of 236 to 1! OU got their first shutout since 2015 and held Missouri St to 135 yards and 7 FDs (Mizzou St had zero FDs for the first 25 minutes of the game). 41-0 HT, 48-0 F. OU racked up 484 yards passing, but just 124 rushing (just 3.5 ypc). Their top two RBs for this game were tFr Seth McGowan (9att-61y) and rFr Marcus Major (11att-31y).

A few quotes from the Oklahoman's Barry Tramel since I don’t think any of us saw the game:

Spencer Rattler certainly lived up to his billing. He moves exceptionally well. More Kyler Murray than Baker Mayfield, and Mayfield was really mobile. Rattler’s throwing was on target; he completed 14 of 17 passes, and two of his incompletions were dropped touchdown passes.

The offensive line wasn’t impressive, even considering a bunch of blockers were sidelined by COVID or contract tracing. You get no slack when you’re playing Missouri State. But the running lanes were minimal. OU tailbacks combined for 100 yards on 26 carries. And while the quarterbacks often had a bunch of time to throw, they occasionally were under attack. Missouri State had four sacks, including three of Rattler. That’s three sacks of Rattler in 20 called pass plays. Not good. He held the ball a little long a couple of times, but still. OU’s offensive line had some issues.

I loved true freshman receiver Trevon West. He’s from Arlington Lamar and hasn’t made a ton of waves. But man, he had four catches against Missouri State, and a couple of them were contested. He really seemed to compete. Keep an eye on him.

I’m with everyone else. I like Marvin Mims. The injury to Jadon Haselwood has opened a door for a young star, and Mims seems to be the man. He had three catches for 80 yards and looked good returning punts.

OU might not use a ton of four-wide-receiver formations this season. Lincoln Riley’s commitment to his tight end/fullback hybrids is higher than ever. Three played extensively -- Austin Stogner, Jeremiah Hall and true freshman Mikey Henderson -- and Brayden Willis didn’t even play. Henderson had four catches, and Hall made a sliding catch for a 24-yard reception.

Nose guard Perrion Winfrey, the highly-acclaimed junior-college transfer, looked good and needs to. The Sooners are not deep on the defensive interior. But Winfrey needs guidance on jersey number. Number 8? That’s unsettling, especially when Ronnie Perkins returns as a defensive end wearing No. 9.

Notre Dame did finish with a 441(6.0) - 334 (5.0) TY advantage, but it took them a while to accumulate that edge. Duke outgained ND 151-7 in the 1st Q with a TOP edge of 10:17-4:43 and 6 to zero FDs! Unfortunately for Duke that didn't translate into a commanding lead, Duke led just 3-0 as they were SOD at the N39 and after having 1st-and-goal at the ND08, they ultimately kicked a FG from the N11. ND struggled with inexperienced receivers who lacked chemistry with Book and the touted OL appeared soft and not ready for live game speed. On ND's first possession of the 2nd Q Kelly sensed the team needed a boost and called a fake punt on his own 21 in which the punter ran for 14y on 4th-and-8. ND would cash that drive for a 7-3 lead, never trailing again although Duke was still right there with them for the rest of the half. Duke had a 1st-and-goal at the N09 and again had to settle for a short FG. That is two first and goals inside the 10 leading to 6 points. After a 75y ND run, Book then threw an INT in the EZ. ND would get the ball back and drive for a FG just before HT to lead 10-6. Duke still clinged to a small yaradage edge at HT 246-228. Early 3rd Duke fumbled just across midfield and shortly thereafter on 4th down ND stretched the lead to 17-6 with a 26y run. ND later punted from near their EZ and with good field position Duke was able to go 6p 39y for a Brice QB run TD...17-13. Even though both teams scored 3rd Q TDs, ND outgained them 104-61 in the quarter. The 4th Q belonged to the Irish with a 109-27 yard edge in the 27-13 F. After getting off to a slow start ND did outrush Duke 178-75 (4.2-2.5). Each team got 3 sacks, ND was 7-of-16 3rd down (all conversions were after the 1st Q) and Duke finished just 4-of-15.
