Santacapper

Pretty much a regular
The Toronto Maple Leafs and forward Nik Antropov have agreed to terms on a two-year contract worth over $4 million US.
"Nik has continually progressed and evolved into a power forward who contributes offensively and provides size amongst our top six forwards," said general manager John Ferguson Jr. in a statement.
"He is a player we wanted to bring back and who will continue to be a valuable player for us."
Antropov had 18 goals and 15 assists for 33 points in 54 games this past season with the Leafs. He has 78 goals and 111 assists for 180 points in 374 career NHL games.
He also represented Kazakhstan at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. Antropov was originally Toronto's first choice, 10th overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

Isles buy out Yashin

The New York Islanders are buying out the remaining four years on Alexei Yashin's 10-year contract in the first step of an off-season overhaul they hope will include re-signing Jason Blake and Ryan Smyth.
"It's going to make the team have a different look," coach Ted Nolan said of Yashin's departure in a conference call Wednesday. "Hopefully, we can work something out with (Blake and Smyth). We're trying to assemble a cohesive group here."
Yashin finished with 119 goals and 171 assists in 346 games with the Islanders, but struggled the past two seasons. He had 18 goals and 32 assists this season, when he missed 24 games with a sprained right knee. He was scoreless in the Islanders' five-game first-round playoff loss to the Buffalo Sabres.
"Unfortunately he got hurt and couldn't get back to where he was before. .. He couldn't get it going," Nolan said. "It'll be a nice fresh start for him and now we have to find someone to replace him."

General manager Garth Snow and Nolan wouldn't disclose the team's off-season strategy, but acknowledged that re-signing Blake, their leading scorer, and Smyth would be priorities.

"We'd love to have Ryan back," Nolan said. "We're going to do everything we can to keep him."
Smyth, who was acquired in a trade-deadline deal, and Blake can become unrestricted free agents on July 1.
Yashin came to the Islanders in a trade after the 2000-01 season. New York signed him to a 10-year contract worth US$87.5 million. The four years left on the deal are worth $26.45 million. The Islanders can buy Yashin out by paying two-thirds of the remaining amount ($17.63 million) over the next eight years for a salary-cap hit of about $2.2 million per season.
Snow said the Islanders' decision was based on discussions among team officials and that Yashin was disappointed when he learned of the buyout Tuesday.
"From my time knowing Alexei as a teammate and as a general manager, I have learned that Alexei is nothing but a first-class individual," said Snow, who played with Yashin for four seasons before becoming the Islanders GM. "With him on the team, the Islanders made the playoffs four out of the last five seasons and I believe that we would not have been able to do that without him."
Yashin had his best season with the Islanders in 2001-02 when he had 32 goals and 43 assists in 78 games.
"I believe this is in the best interests of the team and player. .. " Nolan said. "Alexei will have the opportunity to pursue a fresh start and we'll look at options to fill his position."

Stu Barnes resigns with Dallas

The Dallas Stars announced Thursday that the club has re-signed centre Stu Barnes to a one-year deal worth $900,000 for the 2007-08 season.
"Stu provides several positive attributes to our organization, including leadership and commitment," said General Manager Doug Armstrong.
"We believe in his abilities to make us a better hockey team and we are happy to have him back."
Barnes, 36, appeared in all 82 games last season, posting 13 goals and 25 points.
In 15 NHL seasons with Winnipeg (1991-1994), Florida (1994-1997), Pittsburgh (1997-1999), Buffalo (1999-2003), and Dallas (2003-2007), Barnes has scored 249 goals and 574 points in 1,057 games.

week for Hasek to think

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=627 align=right border=0><TBODY><TR vAlign=top><TD>The Detroit Free Press reports that goaltender Dominik Hasek has informed the Red Wings he will let them know whether he will return to the team within a week.

He went 38-11-6 with a 2.05 goals-against average, .913 save percentage, and eight shutouts during the regular season, his 15th in the NHL and third with Detroit in two stints.

w/o much of a draft this year, I wouldnt be at all surprised to trade that #2 slot to a team who is getting older for some veteran additions to teach their youngsters how to play the game for a full season.

Good young group of kids thats for sure that will just get better.

Hard to make a run at FA's in the NHL w/o a plan, some other selling than we are young and getting better though

Sundin Re-signs to 1 year deal

The Toronto Maple Leafs have agreed to a one-year deal with captain Mats Sundin for $5.5 million. It includes no-trade and no movement clauses.
An offical announcement is expected later today.
TSN reported on Monday that the Leafs would have been happy to sign a longer deal, but Sundin pushed for a shorter one.
Sundin's salary cap figure last season was $6.3 million, so Toronto receives a significant savings with this deal. It also gives the Leafs more flexibility beyond 2008 in case Sundin retires after the coming season.
Sundin now controls his own destiny when it comes to ending his career on his own terms.

"We are extremely proud to have Mats continue as captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs," Leafs GM John Ferguson said. "Not only has he been one of the greatest players in our franchise history, but his exemplary leadership on and off the ice has been all that any organization could want from a team captain.
"We'll rely on Mats' playing ability on the ice and on all of the contributions he makes to the development of our young players. Having him in the fold will have a positive impact on our club for many years to come."
The Leafs were facing a Friday deadline to either exercise or decline a $4.56-million option Sundin had on his old contract.
Neither side wanted that to happen. The Leafs would have had a salary cap hit of $6.33 million - the average yearly pay out of his old deal - even though the actual money paid out to Sundin would have been less.
Sundin had 76 points in 75 games last season, including 27 goals.
In his career, Sundin has scored 523 goals and 720 assists for 1,243 points in 1,231 games.

Moen / Parros back with Anaheim

ANAHEIM, Calif. (CP) - The Anaheim Ducks will have one of their best playoff performers back in uniform next season.
The Ducks signed forward Travis Moen to a two-year contract on Tuesday.
Moen played in all 21 playoff games for the Stanley Cup champions and scored three goals in the five-game NHL championship series.
The 25-year-old from Stewart Valley, Sask., finished with seven goals and five assists for 12 points in the playoffs. He had 21 points (11-10) in 82 games during the regular season.
Also Tuesday, the Ducks signed enforcer George Parros to a two-year contract.

Pierre Turgeon to hang em up

Colorado Avalanche forward Pierre Turgeon has reportedly decided to call it a career.
The Denver Post quotes sources who say the 37 year old is expected to announce his retirement in the very near future.
Turgeon, who sits 27th on the NHL's all-time scorers list, signed a two-year, $3-million contract with the Avalanche in 2005.
Coming off a 46 point season, Turgeon was sidelined for the first 27 games of the 2006-07 season while recovering from shoulder surgery. He returned in early December before suffering a calf injury in mid-February which forced him to miss the final 27 games of the regular season. He finished with four goals and seven points in just 17 games.
Turgeon was the first pick overall of the 1987 NHL draft by the Buffalo Sabres. He has a career mark of 515 goals and 1,327 points in 1,294 games played. His best NHL season was in 1992-93 when he scored 58 goals and 132 points with the New York Islanders.

Turgeon won the Lady Byng Trophy in 1993 and is a four time All-Star and one of 39 players who have scored more than 500 goals in the NHL.

That Stu Barnes is still in the league is amazing to me. Good for that guy.

Also, Santa, I'm actually rooting for your Leafs to find a way to get Ryan Smyth.

Sue me.

Go Pens.

No doubt Joe, especially after the 'new nhl' was introduced.

It'll be interesting to see what way the Leafs head. Clearning up cap space with Sundin is pretty big. O'Neill and Peca are as good as gone, barring a huge pay cut.

Couple good d-men out there I've heard rumblings of them going after. Need a back up goalie, Pogge stinks right now, still learning

I miss Tukko Rask and I didnt even know him, just know he'd be better than Raycroft down the road

Chelios back with Red Wings

DETROIT (CP) - The NHL's oldest player has at least one more season left in him.
Defenceman Chris Chelios and the Detroit Red Wings agreed on a one-year contract Tuesday.
It will be the 24th NHL season for the 45-year-old Chelios, who had 11 assists and a plus-11 rating in 71 games for the Red Wings last season.
Chelios led Detroit defencemen with a plus-7 rating during the team's run to the Western Conference final.
"Chris is coming off another outstanding season and was one of the best defencemen on any team through three rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs," Wings GM Ken Holland said in a statement. "He has taken conditioning to a new level and has set the standard for how today's professional athlete trains year-round in order to compete at an elite level.

"In addition to his high level of play, Chris's experience and leadership are second to none."
Chelios won Stanley Cups with Montreal in 1986 and Detroit in 2002 and is a three-time winner of the Norris Trophy.
In 1,547 career regular-season games for the Canadiens, Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks, Chelios has 182 goals and 936 points. Chelios has 31 goals and 113 assists for 144 points in 246 career playoff games.

Samsonov a Blackhawk

Canadian Press
6/16/2007 12:58:30 PM
MONTREAL (CP) - Sergei Samsonov's disappointing stay with the Montreal Canadiens lasted only one season.
The 28-year-old forward was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday for defenceman Jassen Cullimore and forward Tony Salmelainen.
Samsonov, a Moscow native, signed as a free agent with the Canadiens last summer, but had just nine goals and 17 assists in 63 games.
The former two-time 29-goal scorer was a healthy scratch for 18 games - including the last 13 games after he questioned whether he made the right move in signing with the team.

Samsonov has one season at US$3.5 million left on his contract.

General manager Bob Gainey said after the season Samsonov would not be back.
''Considering we didn't have plans for Sergei Samsonov in our organization for next season, our options were either to buy out his contact or to trade him in order to allow us to save valuable cap room over the next two seasons,'' Gainey said in a release.
It is the second time Gainey has succeeded in finding a taker for a player he signed to large contract and then didn't want. In 2006, he unloaded the final two years of goaltender Jose Theodore's $16-million, three-year deal on the Colorado Avalanche for goalie David Aebischer.
Samsonov has 178 goals and 240 assists for 418 points in 596 career NHL games with Montreal, Edmonton and Boston.
''We believe Sergei can rebound and give us a spark on the power play and offensively as well as improve our overall skill level,'' Blackhawks GM Dale Tallon said in a release.
''We feel he has a lot left in the tank and playing under Denis Savard will bring out the offensive creativity that he has shown in the past.''
Samsonov was selected by the Bruins with the eighth overall pick of the 1997 NHL entry draft. The former rookie of the year also has 13 goals and 26 assists in 59 career playoff games.
The trade was little more than a salary dump for the Canadiens.
Cullimore, who played 52 games for Montreal in the mid-1990s, is set to earn $1.9 million next season and the Canadiens say they have agreed to buy out his contract.
Salmelainen earns $750,000 next year and the team says his situation will be evaluated in the coming weeks.
Cullimore had two goals and 12 assists in 118 games over the last two seasons with the Blackhawks. The six-foot-five, 220-pounder has 21 goals and 59 assists over 643 career games.
He won a Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004.
Salmelainen, 25, had six goals and 11 assists in 57 games with the Blackhawks last season

Lewis out in Boston

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=627 align=right border=0><TBODY><TR vAlign=top><TD>BOSTON (AP) - Dave Lewis is out as the Boston Bruins' coach after just one season.
General manager Peter Chiarelli announced Friday that Lewis will be relieved as head coach and reassigned to another position in the organization. Associate coach Marc Habscheid also will be reassigned.
''I have great respect for both of those men and what they've done in the past and what I think they will accomplish in the future,'' Chiarelli said on a conference call with reporters.
A lack of consistent play throughout the entire season was a key factor in the decision to remove both coaches from their positions.
''You see a level of play that you expect and want and it teases you, and obviously something wasn't getting through,'' Chiarelli said. The general manager said he doesn't expect ''top level play'' all the time, but insists the team be more consistent on the ice.

<!--- End Ad ---></TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>The Bruins flirted with the playoff race for a while but went 1-10-1 in their last 12 games and played shoddy defence, allowing 289 goals - the second most in the league.
Boston also was short on offence with 217 goals, seventh fewest in the league.
Lewis was 35-41-6 in his lone season on the Bruins' bench. He also was the head coach in Detroit from 2002-04, where he had a 96-41-21-6 record.
''As a coach, you go into a new organization not really sure what you have and not sure what you need. By the end of the year, I knew what we had and I knew what we needed and then you just don't get a chance to start on with the next season,'' Lewis said Friday in an interview with Boston's WHDH-TV.
He did not immediately return a message left Friday night by The Associated Press at his home in suburban Detroit.
Chiarelli said he has a short list of candidates to replace Lewis, but refused to comment on specific names. Chiarelli does believe it's critical for the team to have new leadership in place before the July 1 free agent signing period.
He said any free agent that's going to consider a place to play wants ''to know who the coach is and what the coaching staff consists of,'' and said the replacement process will begin ''right away.''
The Bruins underwent a major housecleaning in the past off-season, bringing in Chiarelli and Lewis. The Original Six franchise hasn't won the Stanley Cup since 1972, missing the playoffs in each of the past two seasons.
The sudden removal of the two coaches is a major departure from comments Chiarelli made at the end of the season when he said, ''I also know quick fixes don't work and so I have to be patient. I have to balance the two things because I know our ownership demands a winner and I know the city demands a winner.''
It's that pressure from ownership and a fan base that has grown tired of watching a losing team that may have forced Chiarelli to pull the trigger on both Lewis and Habscheid.
He said both were surprised on Friday to learn they were being removed from their positions. ''Anytime you're relieved of your duties, it's a hit on your pride. It was a tough day,'' said Chiarelli.
The general manager also said that he wouldn't ''stand in their way'' if Lewis and Habscheid get other job opportunities.
Lewis remains under contract with Boston for another three years.
Lewis said after the season that his history with the Red Wings may have blinded him to the work that needed to be done.
''I probably took a number of things for granted that I shouldn't, thinking that the players understand,'' he said then. ''Where I came from, it's just sort of natural, which it really isn't natural. It's a learned process, so that's where I have to improve.''

Komisarek / higgins sign back with Habs

MONTREAL (CP) - The Montreal Canadiens signed forward Christopher Higgins and defenceman Mike Komisarek to US$3.4-million, two-year contracts on Friday.
They will each earn $1.5 million next season and $1.9 million the year after.
The 24-year-old Higgins and 25-year-old Komisarek are both former first-round draft picks by the Canadiens and have become key components of the team.
"Christopher Higgins and Mike Komisarek are two of the young players we consider to be building blocks for the long term success of our team," GM Bob Gainey said in a statement.
Higgins recently completed his second NHL season. He had 22 goals and 38 points in 61 games during a year in which he missed significant time with an ankle injury.

Flyers sign Hartnell and Timonnen early?

The Philadelphia Flyers have dipped into the free agent market a little early, thanks to the Nashville Predators.
Because of Nashville's uncertain ownership future and an expected tight budget in the coming year, sources tell TSN the Predators arranged with the Flyers to give them exclusive negotiating rights to two coveted free agents - defenceman Kimmo Timonen and forward Scott Hartnell.
Sources tell TSN the Flyers have now signed both Hartnell and Timonen to long-term contracts.
Hartnell, who was scheduled to become a free agent on July 1, signed with Flyers on a 6-year, $25.2 million deal for a cap hit of $4.2 million per year.
The Flyers also agreed to terms with Timonen on a 6-year, $378 millioncontract for an annual cap hit of $6.3 million.

A decent trade for the habs considering theyve said they wanted nothing to do with Samsonov. I dont know why they got him in the first place, I know some of the brunt falls on the player but Montreal has shown over the years that it doesnt know how to max those type of guys' potentials.

The Boston Bruins have found their man to guide the club in 2007-08.
TSN has confirmed a report that the Bruins have hired Claude Julien to be their next head coach.
Julien was the head coach of the New Jersey Devils during the 2006-07 campaign, but was fired April 3 despite the team leading the Atlantic Division with a 47-24-8 record.
The 47-year-old previously coached the Montreal Canadiens from January 2003 until January 2006.
In the past 30 years, 16 men have held the Bruins head coaching job. Harry Sinden had two stints, and Mike Sullivan served three seasons but was cast aside in favour of Dave Lewis after Peter Chiarelli became general manager. Chiarelli was hired on May 26 last year but continued at the Ottawa Senators' insistence as their assistant general manager until July 10.

CP) - The Anaheim Ducks knew they might lose veteran winger Teemu Selanne if they won the Stanley Cup. But losing superstar defenceman Scott Niedermayer was never in the cards.
Until now.
''Scott has indicated that he's thinking about retirement,'' Ducks GM Brian Burke told The Canadian Press on Tuesday.
The Conn Smythe Trophy winner as playoff MVP informed Burke of the possibility during the players' exit interviews a few days after Anaheim won its championship.
Niedermayer confirmed the rumours of his possible retirement in an ESPN.com story Monday and said he wasn't leaning either way.

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 align=right border=0><!--drop width--><TBODY><TR height=8><TD></TD></TR><TR><TD><!-- Begin Ad --><SCRIPT type=text/javascript> if(!sops){if(p.sops){var sops=p.sops;}else{var sops="";}} if(dUnitBox==true){boxAd=true;} if(boxAd){if((!dUnitSky)||(!dUnitSuper)||(dUnitBox)){place300x250();}}</SCRIPT><!--- End Ad ---></TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
''I think every player, as they get older, begins to think about how much longer they're going to play,'' Niedermayer told the website. ''I know I think about it.''
While it may be a shock to most, since Niedermayer is only 33 years old, it doesn't surprise the people close to him, including former New Jersey teammate and standout blue-liner Scott Stevens.
''When I was playing with him, he never seemed, in my opinion, like he was planning on playing that long, or as long as I did,'' Stevens, who played 22 NHL seasons, told CP on Tuesday. ''I kept saying to him, `You'll have no trouble surpassing my amount of games and this and that.' And he'd say, 'Oh no, you won't see me doing that.' But there's no question the guy can play as long as he wants.''
Stevens spoke to his former defence partner last week.
''I said to him, `It's not an easy decision. It has to come from within you,' '' said Stevens.
It would be a gigantic blow to the Ducks, who have Niedermayer under contract for two more years at US$6.75 million per season.
''We have not given him a deadline (for his decision) and he's not given us a time frame,'' added Burke. ''Obviously, Scott Niedermayer has earned the right to walk away if that's what he wants to do.
''Obviously we're hoping he plays again.''
Niedermayer turns 34 on Aug. 31. But perhaps the native of Cranbrook, B.C., who began his NHL career at age 19, feels he's got nothing else to play for. He's the only player in hockey history to have won the six championships any Canadian-born player cares about: Stanley Cup, Memorial Cup, world junior gold, men's world gold, Olympic gold, and a World Cup of Hockey title.
He has also captured a Conn Smythe Trophy and Norris Trophy to boot.
''You look at what he's done, he's won everything you can pretty much win,'' said Stevens. ''And sometimes that's a factor in retiring, when you've done it all.''
Furthermore, the Ducks' championship came alongside his brother Rob, fulfilling a lifelong dream. It also gave Scott Niedermayer four Stanley Cup titles after winning three in New Jersey.
In a perfect world, Niedermayer would inform Burke of his decision by the July 1 opening of free agency so the Ducks can try to fill the void. But then again, what does it really matter? There's no one on the market that can replace one of the top-three defencemen in the NHL, Niedermayer finishing runner-up to Detroit's Nicklas Lidstrom for the Norris last week.
Sheldon Souray, Brian Rafalski and Mathieu Schneider are the top three blue-liners still slated for unrestricted free agency, but none of them can fill the skates of the immensely talented Niedermayer, whose leadership off the ice would be equally missed.
Niedermayer, New Jersey's first choice, third overall in the 1991 NHL entry draft, has racked up 608 points (140 goals, 468 assists) in 1,053 career regular-season games, including a career-high 69 points (15-54) in 79 games this past season. He also added 11 points (3-8) in 21 playoff games, giving him 86 career points (22-64) in 183 career games.
A smooth skater and intelligent player, Niedermayer's pinpoint passes also trigger the transition game and he rarely ever gives the puck away.
''I said to him, if he does retire and he feels it's a mistake, there's no reason he can't come back and play, with his abilities and the type of player he is,'' said Stevens.
Meanwhile, the Cup champions also await word on Selanne. The Finnish Flash, slated to be an unrestricted free agent, turns 37 on July 3 and is pondering whether to go out on top.
''He's earned the right to walk if that's what he wants to do,'' said Burke. ''We told him we'll support him.
''And if he wants to come back, that would be great news, too.''

The puck won't drop again until September but there's still plenty of action in the NHL this week.
First the league's 30 owners gather for a board of governors meeting in New York on Wednesday, then the focus shifts to Columbus, Ohio, for the NHL entry draft Friday and Saturday.
In between there'll be plenty of trade talk.
"If there's a flurry of trades it wouldn't surprise me," veteran GM Jim Rutherford of the Carolina Hurricanes said Tuesday.
There were some big moves at this time last year. Vancouver GM Dave Nonis made the brilliant deal to acquire star goalie Roberto Luongo from Florida, but other names also moved, such as Pavol Demitra to Minnesota, Andrew Raycroft to Toronto, Alex Tanguay to Calgary and the seeds of the Chris Pronger blockbuster from Edmonton to Anaheim were also planted.

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 align=right border=0><!--drop width--><TBODY><TR height=8><TD></TD></TR><TR><TD><!-- Begin Ad --><SCRIPT type=text/javascript> if(!sops){if(p.sops){var sops=p.sops;}else{var sops="";}} if(dUnitBox==true){boxAd=true;} if(boxAd){if((!dUnitSky)||(!dUnitSuper)||(dUnitBox)){place300x250();}}</SCRIPT><!--- End Ad ---></TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
"There seemed to be more trades last year and I think with the cap system now you're going to see more movement where teams start to prepare for July 1 (free agency) and start to prepare their team for next year," said Rutherford.
The Philadelphia Flyers got the ball rolling Monday with the trade-and-sign of winger Scott Hartnell and defenceman Kimmo Timonen from the Nashville Predators, moves that were met with mixed reaction around the hockey world.
On one hand, some hockey people felt Flyers GM Paul Holmgren should be praised for his boldness and creativity in acquiring the rights of two players that would have been highly sought-after come the July 1 free-agent market. But on the other hand, the $25.2 million over six years given to Hartnell and $37.8 million to Timonen were seen as a ton of money.
"He overpaid, no question," said one agent.
Either way, the Flyers are now a better team. And they're not done. Expect them to take a serious run at potential unrestricted free agent Daniel Briere if the star centre makes it to July 1 still unsigned. The Buffalo Sabres were expected to touch base with the Briere camp sometime this week for the first time since their season ended last month.
Doug Risebrough, meanwhile, may be a popular man at the draft. The Minnesota Wild GM will be a target for teams looking for a No. 1 goalie. Manny Fernandez, who has two years and US$9.25 million left on his deal, is potentially available after Risebrough re-signed standout netminder Nicklas Backstrom, adding to a goalie glut that also includes up-and-comer Josh Harding.
But while dealing Fernandez could happen as early as this week in Columbus, it could also wait until the trade deadline next season.
"There's no hurry in my mind, but I know if there's opportunities I have to look at it," Risebrough said Tuesday.
While the GMs talk trade, their owners congregate Wednesday where the league, among other things, will give owners an update on the Nashville Predators' pending sale to Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie. But there will not be an actual vote on the transfer of ownership from Craig Leipold. That will have to come later this summer.

Emery to have surgery on his wrist

Ottawa Senators goaltender Ray Emery will undergo surgery Thursday afternoon at a Cleveland clinic to repair a partial tear of the meniscus in his wrist.
Rather than risk a complete tear, the decision was made to undergo surgery now.
Emery, who suffered the injury in November, is expected to require two to three months to recover.
The Cayuga, Ontario native is slated to become a restricted free agent on July 1. He made $925,000 this past year and has arbitration rights.
Emery was 33-16-6 in 58 regular season games with a goals-against-average of 2.47 as the Senators' starting goalie for the better part of the season.

Giggy re-signs

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -Goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere has decided to stay with the Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks, signing a 4-year, $24 million contract on Thursday.
"J.S. Giguere has been an instrumental part of this franchise for the last six years," Ducks executive vice president-general manager Brian Burke said in a statement. "We view him as one of the top goaltenders in the NHL today, one with tremendous character and competitive fire, traits we value greatly in this organization."
The 30-year-old Giguere had a 13-4 record in the playoffs while appearing in 18 postseason games. He had a 1.97 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage.
"I'm very excited to be staying with the Ducks," said Giguere, who earned $3.99 million this season. "Orange County has been a great place for my family over the last six years, and we are grateful to the entire organization for the opportunity to stay here."
Giguere had a 36-10-8 record, a 2.26 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage in 56 regular-season games. His 36 wins were a career best and set a new franchise record, and his 10 regulation losses were the fewest of any NHL goalie who played in 50 or more games.
The Ducks beat the Ottawa Senators in five games in the Stanley Cup finals. They also reached the finals in 2003, losing to the New Jersey Devils in seven games.
Giguere won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the 2003 playoffs after playing in the first 21 postseason games of his career.

TORONTO (CP) - The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a millionaire out of Carlo Colaiacovo, their oft-injured defenceman who has played a grand total of 73 NHL games.
The NHL team announced a US$3.85-million, three-year contract renewal with the 24-year-old blue-liner Thursday.
"He made some great strides, last year especially," said GM John Ferguson Jr., who apparently has a lot of money to spend. "He's got some real good upside.
"We look forward to having him as an integral part of our defence for the next three years."
Colaiacovo, who grew up in Toronto, appeared in 48 games in 2006-07 and scored eight goals while assisting on nine and getting 22 penalty minutes. He was a plus-5 on the plus-minus scale. Among rookie NHL defencemen, he had the second-most goals and was sixth in points.

The six-foot-one, 200-pound defenceman, who has had concussion setbacks, was the team's nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, which is awarded annually for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. He was Toronto's first choice, 17th overall, in the 2001 entry draft. The Leafs haven't qualified for the playoffs since 2004. They'll take to the ice this autumn with many of the players who were in the lineup last season.

The Florida Panthers and Nathan Horton have agreed to terms on a six-year, $24-million contract.
The final three years of the deal, which would have been his unrestricted free agent years, contain a no-trade clause.
''This is where I wanted to be,'' Horton said. ''This is an unbelievable place to play. The guys, the franchise..it's a great organization. Obviously, I wanted to stay here and be part of this team.''
The 22-year old Horton enjoyed a breakout season last year with 31 goals, 31 assists and a +15 rating while playing in all 82 games.
''Nathan has taken significant steps in his growth process and we strongly believe that he possess all the essential qualities that we strive for in our players,'' Panthers' head coach Jacques Martin said.

Horton was chosen 3rd overall in the 2003 NHL entry draft. He has 73 goals and 58 assists in 208 career NHL games.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (CP) - And now the clock begins to click.
Is this the last week in the Buffalo Sabres careers of Chris Drury and Daniel Briere? Does Scott Gomez have seven days left as a New Jersey Devil? Was Ryan Smyth simply a rental with the New York Islanders? Has Sheldon Souray taken his last blast from the point for the Montreal Canadiens?
Big decisions lie ahead this week as the start of the July 1 free agency looms. The flood gates open at noon ET next Sunday.
"I expect the first two or three days in July to be pretty wild," said Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland.

No one will feel the heat more than Sabres GM Darcy Regier. He's got two of the most sought-after players who are pending unrestricted free agents in Drury and Briere.

</NOSCRIPT><!--- End Ad ---></TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>"It's different, I can tell you that," Regier said of having two of the top free agents in the NHL. "I haven't experienced this before in 10 years. We'll see where it goes."
Somehow in the space of seven days Regier needs to find a way to make it work. Most people in and around hockey believe he'll only be able to keep one of them. The Sabres GM is thinking about all kinds of creative ways, such as maybe moving out other salary, to re-sign two players who would likely fetch in and around US$6 million a year on the open market.
"I think do you go through that process, you really do go through everything you can creatively imagine that makes sense," Regier said this weekend as the NHL entry draft wrapped up. "The more difficult thing in a situation like this, is that these things are no longer about one or two years.
"The term and the time is what is so different under the old CBA. It has ramifications that impact even your younger players."
The Toronto Maple Leafs made a splash acquiring goalie Vesa Toskala and winger Mark Bell on Friday and GM John Ferguson Jr. says he's not done.
"We're going to take a look around this week," said Ferguson. "It won't be just July 1 that we're going to be looking at. It's through trades, it's in other ways, but we'll be prepared July 1. We've got some money to spend and if there isn't anything there that makes sense to us, we'll look at a trade."
Expect the Leafs to be among a long list of teams vying for the services of Captain Canada. The Islanders will try to the very end to sign Smyth, but it appears he's headed for free agency. One rumour that just won't go away is the Calgary Flames also having interest in Smyth. Imagine the longtime heart and soul player of the Edmonton Oilers skating with the rival Flames. Unthinkable, right?
Calgary, meanwhile, is closing in on a new contract extension for captain Jarome Iginla, who was slated to be unrestricted after the 2007-08 season. An announcement could come as early as the first week of July.
Devils GM Lou Lamoriello has not only Gomez to try and keep but also defenceman Brian Rafalski as a pending unrestricted free agent.
"You're always speaking to them. You never know," Lamoriello said.
But the veteran GM admitted it appeared that Gomez will go ahead and try the market for the first time in his career.
"I think right now that's what I understand," said Lamoriello. "And certainly we have to respect that. Players put themselves in a position and you have to respect them, you shouldn't look at it any other way. That's the system, that's the CBA. It's his prerogative. .
"We'll do whatever we can to keep him within the framework of what we feel will not interrupt our team. And you have to be very careful, but we'll do whatever we can."
Souray has long been seen as a slam dunk to hit free agency, especially after Montreal re-signed blue-liner Andrei Markov to a new deal paying him US$5.75 million a year, but Habs GM Bob Gainey says he's not done trying with Souray.
"We still have time, we're still going to work on his possibility," said Gainey. "We both started with the idea that he wanted to stay in Montreal and we'd like to keep him. But that's a basis to start, we have to see if we can finish."
The Wings have some big names that could hit the market next Sunday. Holland had meetings here in Columbus with the agents for Dominik Hasek, Mathieu Schneider, Todd Bertuzzi and Danny Markov - all pending unrestricted free agents.
"Really what I've tried to do is get a sense for what they're thinking of and see if we have enough cap space," said Holland. ".We're not going to be able to fit them all with the cap space that we have left."
Hasek, at the very least, will almost surely be back.
"Obviously I have to get Dom back. Then we're going to decide," said Holland. "We'd like to have Bertuzzi back, we'd like to have Schneider back, certainly Danny Markov played well for us. But again we don't have that kind of cap space."
The trick for the Wings will be to try and convince Bertuzzi to take a big pay cut from the $5.2 million he earned last season. Perhaps convince him to sign a one-year deal full of incentives, lure him with the thought of re-establishing himself as a premier NHL forward that will playing alongside the likes of Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg. If Bertuzzi re-signs, then Holland must decide between Schneider and Markov.
Centre Robert Lang, also an unrestricted free agent, won't be offered a contract and is gone from Detroit.
Not everyone will be busy next Sunday. The Vancouver Canucks, for one, appear willing to sit back and wait.
"I don't expect us to be major players on July 1," said Canucks GM Dave Nonis. "I think July 1 is a very exciting day that's great for the fans, but it's not the best place to build your hockey team. If you can augment your lineup and add a couple players in free agency that's great, but it's becoming increasingly expensive to sign free agents.
"We're not looking to July 1 to solve all of our problems. We'd like to solve a couple if we can through free agency, but I don't see it as a time when we're going to be very, very active."
The Carolina Hurricanes could be busy before July 1. GM Jim Rutherford wants to add a top defenceman and he's been linked to Philadelphia Flyers blue-liner Joni Pitkanen, who's on the trade block.
And don't forget the Edmonton Oilers. GM Kevin Lowe made a lot of noise entering draft week saying he was open for business and felt close on a few fronts as left Columbus. He's looking for both an impact forward and a puck-moving defenceman.
