Junior wide receiver Kenny O’Neal will transfer to another school, Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer announced Tuesday.
O’Neal, who began his career at Florida State before coming to UT after playing one season at City College of San Francisco, struggled with academics while at Tennessee.
He was declared academically ineligible for the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1 and missed all of spring practice in order to focus more on academics.
“We excused Kenny from spring practice for the entire spring to get his academics in order,” Fulmer told the News Sentinel last week when asked about O’Neal’s future with the Vols. “We’ll just to have to see how he comes out through finals. We should know any day now.”
A highly touted member of UT’s 2007 recruiting class, O’Neal finished his UT career with two receptions for 59 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown reception against Louisiana-Lafayette.
If O'Neal was academically ineligible when he left UT, he could cost the Vols a scholarship if UT's football academic progress rating score falls below the NCAA mandated level of 925. However Tennessee has not been subject to scholarship penalties or fallen below the 925 mark in the four years since the NCAA instituted the APR program.

BYU football: Running back Tonga ineligible for season

The Brigham Young football team's backfield depth will come in handy next season.

Senior running back Manase Tonga has been ruled academically ineligible, and suspended from the university. Tonga will redshirt the 2008 season, and may re-apply for admission in October for the winter semester of 2009.

"Not having Manase with us this coming season is disappointing and hurts our program; however, our program is designed so that the next player in line will step in and contribute at a high level," BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "I'm confident Manase will take the necessary steps to restore his eligibility and be able to return to the team next season."

This marks the second straight offseason Tonga has run into problems away from the field. Last July, he was arrested after a routine traffic stop in Provo for failing to pay a traffic ticket and providing a false name to a police officer.

After serving a one-game suspension for the season-opener against Arizona, the 6-foot, 238-pound Tonga finished the year rushing for 305 yards on 88 carries and scoring eight touchdowns.

Tonga's absence narrows BYU's primary rushing options to sophomore Harvey Unga and senior Fui Vakapuna with redshirt freshman J.J. DiLuigi and junior Wayne Latu coming off strong spring performances.

UCLA QB Cowan out for '08 season; Olson to miss 6-8 weeks

Cowan had been chosen to be the starter by Chow and Neuheisal less than a week into spring practice. buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurn.

JC transfer Kevin Craft (recruited by June Jone's so I guess he's somewhat legit) will be Olson's backup. Chris Forcier and Ossaar Rashann are 3rd and 4th on the depth chart.

Kevin Craft is the son of the former SDSU coach and played his freshman year there before transferring when his dad was let go.

He's a good QB, but would be 2nd or 3rd on that depth chart if everyone was healthy.

Another UCLA QB with an injury:

UCLA's Osaar Rasshan will have surgery

UCLA quarterback Osaar Rasshan will undergo surgery on his left knee but is expected to be ready for training camp in August.

Rasshan, who will be a junior, was bothered by what was called tendinitis throughout spring practice. He will be the third Bruins quarterback to undergo surgery in less than a month.

Patrick Cowan suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament shortly after Coach Rick Neuheisel designated him as the starter. He will miss all of next season. Ben Olson sustained a fractured bone in his right foot but is expected to be ready by training camp.

Junior College transfer Kevin Craft and redshirt freshman Chris Forcier are the two other quarterbacks currently on the roster. Nick Crissman of Huntington Beach Edison High and Kevin Prince of Encino Crespi will be freshmen in the fall.

Rasshan started three games at quarterback for the Bruins in 2007, after injuries to Cowan and Olson. He completed 17 of 45 passes for 259 yards and threw two intercepted passes.

Also, tailback Chane Moline will undergo surgery to have a screw put in his right wrist. He broke the wrist a year ago but was experiencing pain throughout spring practice. He is also expected to be ready by training camp.

WSU Football | Xavier Hicks to miss 3 games

By Craig Smith
Seattle Times staff reporter

Xavier Hicks, the Washington State safety currently serving a 45-day sentence in the Whitman County Jail, will be suspended for the first three games of the season.
Hicks will miss the opener Aug. 30 in Seattle against Oklahoma State, the Sept. 6 home game against California and the Sept. 13 game at Baylor, said WSU sports-information director Bill Stevens.
Coach Paul Wulff decided on the punishment in consultation with the players council he formed after being named coach, Stevens said.
Hicks pleaded guilty to third-degree attempted assault and third-degree theft, both gross misdemeanors, in April after being charged initially with two felonies. The assault charge involved Hicks putting rubbing alcohol in the contact lens case of former teammate-roommate Grady Maxwell after a dispute over an unpaid cable-TV bill.
Maxwell never put the contact lenses in his eyes.
The theft case involved use of a stolen credit card.
Hicks could be released after 30 days in jail for good behavior. He faces fines, restitution and court costs of more than $2,300.
Hicks initially was suspended from the team when the charges were filed in February but later was allowed to participate in spring practice.
Hicks, who will be a redshirt junior in the fall, is the team's top returning free safety. He was No. 2 on the depth chart last season, started three games and played in 11. He was the No. 9 tackler on the team with 51 tackles, 25 of them solo.
Stevens also reported that there were no academic casualties on the team in the recently concluded spring semester. He said the team's accumulated grade point stands at 2.72 heading into summer sessions.
Last week, WSU was penalized eight scholarships because eight players who left the program during the 2006-07 academic year were academically ineligible.

Williams, a redshirt senior from Cedar Park, Tex., was accused last week of shoplifting from a Lafayette grocery store.
It was the latest setback for Williams, a talented athlete who hasn't made it through a season without a major injury since 2004.
Last season, he appeared in seven games. He had 17 tackles and two interceptions, but he ruptured his Achilles tendon at Michigan on Oct. 13 and was sidelined for rest of season.
In 2006, he started the season opener against Indiana State, but went down with a season-ending dislocated knee in third quarter.
He did not play in 2005 because he broke his leg during spring practice.

Help for the offensive line?

Kai Maiava is coming to UCLA as an offensive lineman, he said. He played left guard his freshman season at left guard at Colorado but was asked to move to fullback. He lost 25 pounds to do so but was buried on CU's depth chart at fullback. He said he's already gained the weight back and is at 300 pounds again.

UNC linebacker off team <!-- CONTENT --> UNC linebacker Wesley Flagg has been dismissed from the team for violating team policies.
Flagg, a junior, started three games last season at middle linebacker, played on special teams and made a total of 23 tackles.
In 2006, Flagg was one of four true freshman to get playing time. He competed in 12 games, chiefly on special teams and as a backup linebacker.

Going to be a long year for the Ville. Some pretty severe off-season attrition. Council, Stripling, and Allen.

I like Kragthorpe, but I think things are going to end badly for him in a couple years or so.

I'll be damned if UK can't find a way to take that opener in Louisville. After Cantwell, I couldn't name you hardly anyone who is worth a shit. They are suffering from some severe losses.

With heavy losses at WVU, L-Ville, and Rutgers, have to place USF and Pitt at the head of the conference pack. If Pitt loses, it's not due to lack of talent. Have to look to the Wannstache.

RJ very true, the local media outlets are putting the pressure on wannstadt this year. He has the talent comming in and should be able to put together a top 15 team this year according to the talent pool which he has comming in. A large part of there success will be derived from the maturity or decline of the starting QB Bill Stull and how much of a leash Wannestadt gives him. The RB that they have is great so i wouldn't give the QB much of a leash just my .02.

Football: Tigers boot Vincent off team

Starting linebacker was academically eligible but did not reach coach’s goals

By PAUL STRELOW
pstrelow@thestate.com CLEMSON — Clemson will have to replace all three of its starting linebackers from a year ago.
Junior middle linebacker Cortney Vincent will not be reinstated for the 2008 season, the school announced after Monday’s team meeting.
Vincent was suspended for spring practice because of an unspecified violation of team and athletic department policy. Coach Tommy Bowden later said Vincent’s status would be evaluated after spring exams.
Vincent’s poor academic performance in the spring semester is believed to have been the final straw, as Bowden viewed it as an indication Vincent did not covet a spot on the team.
“We outlined some goals for Cortney this spring,” Bowden said in a prepared statement. “While he would have been academically eligible to compete this year, he did not meet these goals during the spring semester.”
In December, Vincent was also charged with DUI in a case that is still awaiting a jury trial. He was suspended for Clemson’s bowl game last season as a result.
Vincent, an Allendale native, is expected to transfer. But because he has redshirted and has one season of eligibility left, he must go to a Division II or III school if he wants to play before his five-year NCAA clock expires.
Attempts to reach Vincent were unsuccessful.
Redshirting freshman Brandon Maye is expected to fill Vincent’s spot in the lineup, although Maye was expected to challenge Vincent for the starting job in August based on his development this spring.
Depth behind Maye figures to be the greater issue, with junior Josh Miller the primary alternative.
Ogren leaving. Redshirt freshman receiver Jeff Ogren is transferring to Samford, which is close to home for the Tuscaloosa, Ala., native. Ogren played mop-up duty in four games last season and caught one pass.

Stay tuned, he is one guy they cannot afford to lose.

Reports: Grand jury indicts Arizona DE Turner

<!-- end page tools --><!-- begin story body --> <!-- template inline -->A University of Arizona defensive end has been indicted by a grand jury on a sexual assault charge, according to media reports.
A Pima County grand jury indicted Johnathan Turner, 23, on Friday in connection with an incident alleged to have taken place April 3, sheriff's deputies said.
According to the reports, a woman reported that she fell asleep after drinking alcohol at a party and awoke to find Turner sexually assaulting her.
According to court documents, the woman pushed Turner away and went into a bedroom to tell a friend about the assault. Turner followed her and told her friends that she was "tripping out" and that he was just "cuddling" with her.
The woman's friends took her to a nearby hospital, where police were called, according to the reports.
The Tucson Citizen reported that it could not reach Turner for comment. However, his attorney, Richard Martinez, asked that Turner not be judged before the facts are known.
"It is an extremely difficult time for him," Martinez said, according to the Citizen. "He is caught in a situation where I know everybody is going to prejudge him, and that shouldn't be the case until all the details are known. ... Once the whole story is out there will be a different opinion."
"Obviously we are aware of the situation and we are going to let the judicial system obviously take its course," Arizona coach Mike Stoops said.
Stoops said he had not yet discussed Turner's playing status with Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood.
"We will discuss what is best for all parties and make some type of decision this week," Stoops said, according to the report. "We are going to leave him on scholarship and let him continue to work on his education ... He is going to work out on his own."

Football: Filiaga quits team

Utah's depth at defensive tackle has just gotten a little thinner with an announcement from Utah that sophomore Isley Filiaga has quit the team because of lingering injuries. Filiaga, a 6-foot, 305-pound Timpanogos High graduate who came to Utah via BYU and a mission, started the spring listed No. 1 at nose tackle, but was passed over by Kenape Eliapo by the conclusion of spring practices.

Filiaga had a foot injury that limited his participation, but I know the coaches weren't that happy with his work ethic either, so it's not much of a surprise that he is leaving the program.

When I was going over the depth chart with defensive coordinator Gary Andersen at the end of spring practice he mentioned he could move one or two of his guys outside inside during fall camp, so I wouldn't be surprised if Koa Misi gets some time back at his old spot. I do know the coaches are happy with Lei Talamaivao's development, which will be more important now than ever to help what is turning out to be a very inexperienced looking defensive line.

Don't forget too that the Utes signed Dave Kruger, Paul's younger but not so little brother at 6-5, 265-pounds. He'll be here this season (with plans to go on a mission after 2008) and already is penciled in as the backup to Eliapo at nose tackle. It isn't far fetched to think that the Kruger brothers could be starting alongside one another.

Hamby, indicted by a grand jury Tuesday, is accused of punching the man during an altercation near campus. The victim suffered a fractured jaw and was treated at a Lubbock hospital, police said.
Hamby fled the scene, according to a police report.
Hamby, a 6-foot-3, 287-pound junior from San Antonio, walked on at Texas Tech and rose steadily on the depth chart before starting for the first time last season.
Hamby's attorney, Tom Pitts, declined to comment Wednesday.
Texas Tech coach Mike Leach said in Wednesday's edition of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal that he knew of Hamby's altercation and had not decided whether to discipline him.
"His status is we'll see what the facts are and then address it based on the facts," Leach said. "We're not going to jump to any conclusions."

Quarterback Carousel At Michigan... State

Brian Hoyer is lonely.

Anyone who pays the slightest attention to college football knows about Michigan's uncertain quarterback situation, but recent events have put the state's other Big Ten team in a similarly dodgy spot:

Out: Redshirt freshman Connor Dixon, a Pennsylvania native, decided to transfer a few days ago.

In: Michigan State picked up transfer Keith Nichol, who originally committed to Michigan State but decommitted when John L Smith was fired and Rhett Bomar pulled a Bomar, opening up the job at Oklahoma. Sam Bradford kinda slammed that door shut.

Out: Redshirt freshman Nick Foles, a Texan, announces he's going to transfer somewhere closer to home, specifically citing the crowded(?!?!) Michigan State depth chart as a reason to bolt.

As a result, MSU is left with starter Brian Hoyer, a fifth year senior, and redshirt freshman Kirk Cousins, an unrated recruit with one other BCS offer (Colorado). Past that it's walkons. The Spartans will have Nichol and incoming freshman Andrew Maxwell in 2009; in 2008 they'll be desperately hoping the mediocre Hoyer stays in one piece.

Reduced penalty for BC's Smith

Email|Print|Single Page| Text size – + By Bob Hohler Globe Staff / May 22, 2008
Resolving the case of a night of underage drinking gone bad, a Boston College football player who was initially charged with breaking into a female student's dorm room and raping her has admitted there were sufficient facts to support a finding that he was guilty of a lesser offense: indecent assault and battery.
more stories like this

Brady J. Smith, 20, a 6-foot-2-inch, 285-pound defensive lineman who had hoped to play professionally, was ordered to stay away from the victim, regularly attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, and submit to random urine tests for two years. If he stays out of trouble until May 14, 2010, the charge will be dismissed, a judge ruled last week in Brighton Municipal Court.
While Smith avoided facing more serious charges, his football career appears in serious jeopardy. BC has permanently dismissed him, according to school spokesman Jack Dunn.
"It's a sad case for everybody involved," said Smith's lawyer, Philip A. Tracy Jr.
The victim, a BC senior, allegedly told police that Smith broke into her modular apartment on campus and sexually assaulted her after she rebuffed his advances at an Allston bar. Police arrested Smith, of Manchester, Md., soon after the incident in a nearby parking lot. He was initially held on $50,000 cash bail.
Suffolk County prosecutors agreed to reduce the rape charge after they reviewed the evidence and interviewed the victim, said Jake Wark, a spokesman for District Attorney Daniel F. Conley.
"The victim made it clear that she wished to resolve the case as rapidly as possible so she could graduate and leave the area with some closure in the case," Wark said.
Smith, who lost his two years of remaining football eligibility, had helped the Eagles post a 21-6 record the last two seasons, with a pair of bowl victories. His family had a long history with the school, dating to 1965, when his uncle, Charlie, captained the football team. Smith's brother, Matt, and cousin, Charles, also played for the Eagles in the 1990s.
But the family's ties to BC have been strained by Smith's liquor-related incident.
"You can blame it all on excessive alcohol [consumption]," Tracy said. "It's a lesson he has learned, and I hope other young people learn it."
Two of Smith's former BC teammates, Gosder Cherilus and DeJuan Tribble, are due in court next month on charges stemming from a bar brawl last year. The players, who were selected in the NFL draft, face two counts of assault, with one count involving a dangerous weapon (a shod foot). They have pleaded not guilty.

College football: Multiple concussions end career of Aggies' linebacker

COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M freshman linebacker Derrick Stephens on Tuesday received the news he had dreaded — but figured might be inevitable based on his multiple concussions.
Team doctors told him he couldn't play anymore, said Stephens, one of the nation's top linebacker prospects a year ago.
“It wasn't by my choice,” Stephens said of having to quit football. “It hurt my heart. That was my passion right there. To have somebody tell me that I can't play anymore — shoot me dead.”
Stephens, who starred at Cy-Falls High School near Houston, said he received a medical release based on “four or five” concussions throughout his high school and short-lived college career, and that the Aggies will honor his scholarship.
Stephens redshirted last season for the 7-5 Aggies under former coach Dennis Franchione.
“I'm going to get my degree,” said Stephens, who added that he plans to apply for A&M's business school. “That's why I went to A&M.”

He tallied 227 tackles over his last two seasons at Cy-Falls, including 18 tackles for losses as a senior.
The Aggies will rely on a 4-3 base defense — four defensive linemen and three linebackers — although they will also use multiple fronts (including a 3-4) under first-year coach Mike Sherman.
A year ago under a different regime, the Aggies started two linebackers — seniors Mark Dodge and Misi Tupe — and five defensive backs.
Juniors Matt Featherston and Anthony Lewis are expected to step in for Dodge and Tupe, the team's top two tacklers last season, while Stephens was expected to make a push for playing time. Neither Featherston nor Lewis was among the Aggies' top 13 tacklers last season.

Ellis booted from football team

By JOSEPH PERSON - jperson@thestate.com

DESTIN, Fla. — South Carolina backup defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis has been dismissed from the team for violating university policy, Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier said Tuesday following the first day of the SEC spring meetings.
Spurrier would not divulge the reason for Ellis’ dismissal, although a source said Ellis had failed multiple drug tests.
“Kenrick’s gone,” Spurrier said. “He’s finished.”
Ellis, a redshirt freshman from West Palm Beach, Fla., appeared in all 12 games last season, finishing with five tackles against Clemson in his only start. The 6-foot-5, 353-pounder, who battled weight problems throughout his career, was listed as a second-teamer on the Gamecocks’ spring depth chart.
Attempts to reach Ellis were unsuccessful.

Forgot to post this when I learned about it last week but

Clemson LB's Cortney Vincent and Antonio Clay will not play in 2008. Bowden kicked Vincent off the team last week b/c he did not meet the necessary requirements for reinstatement that were given to him by Bowden. Antonio Clay left the team for family reasons. From what I understand he hopes to return to Clemson for the 2009 season and is exploring his options as a redshirt in 2008.

pretty big impact right Dwight? 3 brand new LBs starting this year? that's pretty much bama's only hope, that they can pick apart the middle of that D to keep up iwth the CU offense.

Yeah it will be 3 new starters. Its pretty scary for us really. Our only newcomer on the D-line is DaQuan Bowers who was the #1 DE recruit in the nation and dominated during the Spring. You guys could and will throw out some things to confuse him schematically but I feel he will match up very well 1 on 1 and will be as effective as a first game starter true freshman can be. We really don't lose anything from our secondary either. I think there will be 2 interesting matchups that determine the game. Can Clemson's LBs stay at home and cover their assignments appropriately or will they bust some coverage and allow big plays? Clemson can't afford to give up big plays in what I feel will be a fairly low scoring game. The second matchup is Clemson's O-line vs. Bamas D-line. If you guys can get pressure without bringing your LBs then Cullen will take a lot of hits and not be very effective. Either way, I can't wait until it all gets started.

pretty big impact right Dwight? 3 brand new LBs starting this year? that's pretty much bama's only hope, that they can pick apart the middle of that D to keep up iwth the CU offense.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -Minnesota kick returner Harold Howell was dismissed from the team for academic reasons.

Coach Tim Brewster said Tuesday that Howell was cut for violations of academic and team guidelines.

Brewster promised big things from the speedy, 5-foot-8 Howell after recruiting him out of Jacksonville, Fla., last year.

In his first season, Howell appeared in 10 games as a reserve receiver and return man. He averaged 23.1 yards on kick returns.

ND linebacker Nagel transfers

By ERIC HANSEN
Tribune Staff Writer

SOUTH BEND -- Aaron Nagel is convinced the Notre Dame football team will make a run at a national title sometime in 2009 or 2010.

He just won’t be around to be a part of it.

“You don’t know how hard this was,” said Aaron’s father, Ron, after the freshman linebacker met with Irish head coach Charlie Weis on Wednesday afternoon and ultimately decided to transfer.

“Our family has always been Notre Dame fans and always will be Notre Dame fans. We’ve got nothing but good things to say about coach Weis. It came down to the fact that Aaron wanted a chance to get on the field. It didn’t happen in the spring and it didn’t look like it was ever going to happen.”

Nagel, a 6-foot-1, 225-pounder from Lemont, Ill., did not see action as a freshman in 2007 and in all likelihood would have begun the 2008 season at No. 4 on the depth chart at the inside linebacker position.

Fifth-year senior Maurice Crum is the incumbent starter there. Incoming freshman David Pozluszny and senior Steve Quinn are expected to battle in the fall to back up Crum.

Weis’ policy is not to release players to schools that appear on ND’s upcoming schedules. So that will rule out Purdue, Michigan State and Stanford -- three schools that would have interested Aaron, according to Ron.

“Northwestern, Vanderbilt and Illinois jump out as possibilities,” he said. “The academic fit is absolutely important in this equation. But we’re going to take our time and find the right school. We just wish it could have been Notre Dame.”

Aaron, who recorded a 4.0 GPA this spring after a 3.75 in the fall, will have to sit out the 2009 season wherever he ends up. He’ll then have three years of eligibility remaining.

Yeatman back
As expected, Irish tight end Will Yeatman has been reinstated to the football and men’s lacrosse teams. Yeatman, a 6-foot-6, 260-pound junior-to-be, was suspended indefinitely by the university from both teams following a Jan. 28 arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Nose tackle Pat Kuntz, exiled for “personal reasons” for the spring semester at Notre Dame, is still expected to re-enroll in June and rejoin the team. Kuntz attended Ivy Tech in his hometown of Indianapolis this past spring. The senior-to-be is expected to move to defensive end in the fall.

FOOTBALL: Tejada Injures Knee During Morning Run
By Alex Abrams
The Morning News
FAYETTEVILLE - Arkansas kicker Alex Tejada wore a brace and walked on crutches Friday after injuring his left knee while running earlier in the day.
Kevin Trainor, Arkansas' associate athletic director for media relations and communications, said Tejada will be evaluated in the next few days. But Trainor added that the injury isn't expected to keep the sophomore out of preseason practice, which begins in August.
Trainor said Tejada suffered a patella subluxation in his left knee - which is his non-kicking leg - during a morning run. It's the same injury the kicker suffered as a soccer player at Springdale High.
Tejada, as a freshman, led the Razorbacks in scoring last season with 109 points. He connected on 17-of-23 field goals and 58-of-60 extra-point attempts.

Syracuse Loses Top WR, Fans on Suicide Watch (Yes, Again)

Things just keep getting better in upstate New York:
Syracuse's top receiver Mike Williams was suspended for academic reasons and is no longer enrolled at the school.
What is it about guys named Mike Williams? I don't know. Williams had ten touchdowns last year as a sophomore and was named second-team All Big East. Syracuse Blog Troy Nunes Is An Absolute Magician just wants to know one thing:

jesus-hates-su.jpg

The backdrop is Phil Steele's All Big East team; you'll note Williams is the only Orangeman on the first two teams who doesn't keeck a touchdown.

Haven't seen Steele's assessment of Texas' D, but it looks like nothing is written in stone and Muschamp is moving all the pieces around. Some Freshmen may start too--very unusual at Texas.

Saw a San Antonio article stating that among the jumbles on DL--most of which is being done to improve Texas' pass rush and to fill the lack of depth at DL--Muschamp is planning on having LB Sergio Kindle at DE to get additional pressure.

Look for alot more speed on the DL as almost all 4 of the DL at any given time will be natural DEs.

Dale Martin to transfer

That's the word over at U of L today. The redshirt freshman running back was a hot recruiting commodity out of Bolingbrook, Ill., two years ago but struggled with injuries last season. This year, the 6-foot, 208-pounder was slowed with some minor injuries during the spring and would have been behind Brock Bolen, Bilal Powell and Victor Anderson on the depth chart.

No word yet on where Martin may be heading.

Some other interesting things going on at U of L today, too. Stay tuned for more later.

UPDATE: Just talked to Martin, and he confirmed that he asked for and was granted his release. He doesn't know where he's going next, but said he hoped to take a year off to get healthy. Look for a full update later.

The other item I hinted at was Dan McDonnell being courted by Auburn. He turned that down today. Look to the main site for a full story.

Rumor is that Mike Williams was caught cheating on a final, then given a second chance to take it. He then got caught cheating again.

If that is true, then he just really needs to go to jail.

Is being an idiot a class C felony? We really ought to work on making that happen.

Huskies' Savannah suffers broken arm

Top tackler could miss first 2 games

By MOLLY YANITY
P-I REPORTER
With All-Pac-10 second-team center Juan Garcia already out for the majority of the season with a sprained foot, Huskies coach Tyrone Willingham learned Tuesday he will be without a key component of his defense in a win-or-else season.
The Huskies' leading tackler from 2007, linebacker E.J. Savannah, broke his arm in an off-field incident last weekend and could miss the first two games of the 2008 season.
An athletic department spokesman confirmed Tuesday that Savannah fractured the humerus bone in his left arm and said the full recovery time is approximately three months.
That timetable would sideline the junior through all of fall camp, which begins Aug. 4, for the Aug. 30 season opener at Oregon, and for the home opener Sept. 7 against Brigham Young.
The humerus is the biggest bone in the arm, extending from the shoulder to the elbow. The type of fracture and whether it will require surgery was not known Tuesday evening.
How Savannah broke his arm was not reported, but one source with the team said it happened while Savannah was arm wrestling.
Savannah, a Bellevue High School product and one of the prizes of Willingham's first recruiting class, has had a tumultuous year.
He was suspended for the first half of spring workouts for poor attendance at winter workouts and former walk-on Josh Gage filled the starting role. Savannah came back, albeit at the bottom of the depth chart, and led the team with eight tackles in the spring game.
Despite missing three starts because of unspecified disciplinary reasons over the past two seasons, Savannah had a solid 2007 campaign. He recorded 111 tackles, which ranked sixth in the Pac-10, and had 14 tackles for loss, two sacks and an interception.
He figured to be a centerpiece of a revamped defense led by new coordinator Ed Donatell.
Donatell praised Savannah during the spring for his speed, explosiveness and his natural instinct for the ball. Donatell also didn't think his early absences in the spring would affect Savannah's progress.
The injury definitely will, though.
Before Savannah's injury, the linebacking corps looked to be a strength behind a young and inexperienced defensive line with Savannah, junior Donald Butler and Trenton Tuiasosopo battling in the middle and sophomore Mason Foster manning the other side.
Gage, sophomore Matt Houston and senior Chris Stevens will be the candidates to fill Savannah's role.

Williams, a former star at Strong Vincent High School in Erie, played in 10 games in 2007, catching five passes for 100 yards and a touchdown.
Williams was expected to be Pitt's top deep threat this season, and his absence will create an opening that could be filled by incoming freshman receiver Jonathan Baldwin of Aliquippa.
Williams plans to remain on Pitt's team and take a redshirt season. He would have three seasons of eligibility remaining.
"We believe Maurice can achieve a lot at Pitt, both academically and athletically, and our expectations are for him to use this as motivation for improvement," Panthers coach Dave Wannstedt said in a statement.

WVU safety kicked off team
By The Associated Press

MORGANTOWN -- West Virginia safety Charles Pugh has been kicked off the team after being charged with a felony.
WVU spokesman Mike Montoro says coach Bill Stewart dismissed Pugh for violating team policy Wednesday.
WVU Police Chief Bob Roberts says Pugh turned himself in and was released on $10,000 bond earlier in the day.
Roberts says the fraudulent scheme charge involves about $1,600 run up without permission on someone else's credit or debit card.
Pugh had 19 tackles and two forced fumbles as a junior and had been expected to compete for a starting role next fall.

OK, now that I have Steele, I've gone through and made the changes for season ending injuries/transfers/suspensions. To summarize, they are:

Szymanski, who will be a junior, graduated from A&M Consolidated High a year early to kick for the Aggies.
He made 17 of 30 field goals over two seasons.
Senior Richie Bean and freshman Randy Bullock are expected to compete for the job.

**Note: Szymanski sucked on FGS, particularly 40+ yards. But he had 24 TBs on 66 KOs. Replacing that will hurt.

Georgia's Southerland to miss start of season

<table class="cnninlineright" align="right" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td>
</td></tr></tbody></table>ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- Georgia senior fullback Brannan Southerland will miss the start of the season following surgery Friday to repair a stress fracture in his left foot.
Southerland sustained a fracture of the navicular bone in his left foot at the end of last season. He had surgery after the season but Georgia announced Friday night that tests this week revealed the stress fracture in a different location of the same bone.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Joe Johnson at St. Mary's Hospital.
Georgia director of sports medicine Ron Courson said Southerland will need about four months to recover.
Southerland has started 25 games. He led the team with 10 touchdowns in 2006.

All Pitt Receivers Who Are Still Eligible, Stand Up. Whoa Whoa, Not So Fast, Mr. Williams

The Pitt Panthers have long been innovators in the fight to do more with less. First, there was the notion to begin referring to the team as "Pitt," even though we know that "sburgh" is still there, don't pretend it isn't. Then there's Dave Wannstedt covering his upper lip with 80% of a moustache on a routine basis. Now, their passing game will be ever more efficient and wondrous, all thanks to one player's casual attitude toward academics:
Pitt receiver Maurice Williams will sit out the season after being declared academically ineligible.

"We believe Maurice can achieve a lot at Pitt, both academically and athletically, and our expectations are for him to use this as motivation for improvement," Panthers coach Dave Wannstedt said in a statement.
Williams was expected to start after a productive true freshman season; instead, he will redshirt. This (go Iowa) is probably good news (I root for Iowa) to teams facing the Panthers this season (HAHAHAHA SUCK IT WANNSTACHE GO HAWKS WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO).

Three ASU backups leave football program

Comments 0 | Recommend 1 Dan Zeiger, Tribune

Three reserve Arizona State football players — wide receiver Rodney Glass, defensive lineman Zach Niusulu and linebacker Antone Saulsberry — are no longer with the program.
Read latest ASU news at "Blogging with the Devils"
Glass, a converted running back, was sidelined for spring drills due to academics, Niusulu was low on the depth chart at defensive tackle and Saulsberry never found a position after being recruited as a linebacker, switching to running back, then moving back to LB.
Saulsberry has one year of eligibility remaining, Glass and Niusulu three.
More departures are likely to come, as the Sun Devils must be down to the NCAA limit of 85 scholarship players in the fall.
There are several jersey number changes. Most notably, quarterback Samson Szakacsy is switching to No. 10 so incoming QB Jack Elway can wear the No. 7 that his father, John, donned at Stanford and in the NFL.
Cornerback Omar Bolden goes from No. 32 to No. 3, defensive end Luis Vasquez from No. 97 to No. 49, and receiver Brandon Smith resumes wearing No. 2 after donning No. 9 for two seasons. In 2006, Smith switched numbers with Sam Keller because the quarterback wanted to honor ASU signee and former high school teammate Angelo Richardson, who was paralyzed in a random shooting the previous spring.

Check to make sure you have Charles Pugh scratched too.

Another Mountaineer player off the team, in legal jam
By Mike Casazza
Daily Mail sportswriter
MORGANTOWN -- Redshirt freshman Evan Rodriguez is no longer a part of the WVU football team, officials disclosed Wednesday.
Director of Football Communications Mike Montoro said Rodriguez was suspended from school in April and subsequently dismissed from the team.
Rodriguez, 19, redshirted last season and WVU coaches were intrigued enough by his size, speed and agility that he was moved from safety to the tight end-fullback position in spring practice.
Rodriguez was arrested March 20 and charged with a misdemeanor count of battery. He was arraigned and released that same day on a personal recognizance bond.
The North Bergen, N.J., native is accused of grabbing a WVU night staff employee at Dadisman Hall, pushing her into a wall and twisting her arm in front of witnesses on March 18, according to a criminal complaint.
According to the complaint filed in Monongalia County Magistrate Court, the employee needed medical attention for her injuries.
Rodriguez is awaiting a hearing date. His initial hearing was May 29, but Rodriguez showed up without legal representation and requested a court-appointed attorney. If convicted, he faces a $500 fine and up to a year in jail.
At 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds, Rodriguez was a first-team all-state safety and the Hudson County defensive player of the year as a senior at North Bergen High, but also an accomplished quarterback. He earned all-conference and all-county honors at both positions.
Rodriguez had scholarship offers from Cincinnati, Pitt, Rutgers and Temple before choosing the Mountaineers.

Webb, a junior, has been dismissed for violating team policy. He had two tackles in 10 games and returned 19 punts for 16 yards.
