This is a bad matchup for Eastern Michigan, imo. I have yet to go back and watch any Eastern Michigan games, but I think by the box score, I see they run the ball a ton; cant pass, and can't stop the pass. That is not a good profile to play against ODU. This is the first ever home FBS game for ODU. Eastern Michigan is sandwiched between Florida and Michigan State.
Eastern Michigan snuck by Morgan State (MEAC). Morgan St was 18/28 for 269 yards, 3 td 0 int. They ran the ball 41 times for 210 yards. Morgan State lost the following week to Holy Cross, btw. If ODU can run the ball well vs. NC State (37 carries, 196 yards), I don't see how EMU is going to stop them (and deal with one of the better QBs in the country in Heinicke) I do not expect ODU to have any type of let down or hold back vs EMU, I saw a team that was pissed off they lost and really thought they should have beat NC STate. ODU is going to spread it out and force EMU to choose whether they keep 2 or 3 LBers in the box.
NC State did run the ball well vs. ODU (39 carries for 242 yards); Hampton did not. I believe a lot of those rushing yards came in the 3rd and 4th quarter when the defense wore down (NC St OL outweighed the DL by an average of 46 lbs) I don't think the run defense is a huge concern, think the passing defense is more of a problem.....but can EMU throw the ball effectively at all?
Hampton had more success on offense vs. ODU that I would have liked to see. That scared me a bit, but the performance vs. NC State encouraged me (my standards for ODU defense are really low) Hampton came back last week and had some success on offense vs. a pretty good fCS team in William and Mary. 23-34 335 yards through the air and 29 carries for 107 yards on the ground. (turnovers did them in again) Clearly Hamptons offense is better than what was expected.
I can't see ODU's offense struggling and I think they put up something over 40 points here. With any ODU game, the key is how many points they give up. I see EMU trying to run the ball over and over and they will certainly have some success at times during the game. But without the threat of the pass and without the triple option, I see a decent performance from our defense.
My prediction is 45-17 ODU. Lets see if I'm just a homer:cheers3:
