As one who follows ND very closely and probably their recruiting even more closely, I have an extremely hard time saying it is a talent issue at this point. Utilizing Rivals.com stats, their last three classes are #8, #8, and #1 in the country, respectively. For as bad as Weis has coached his teams, he has recruited just as well.
To those who say recruiting experts always overrate ND commits (i.e. Cowherd, who I actually really like), that is absolutely wrong, with the exception of Tom Lemming. I could care less about the number of stars; I care about who else they have offers from. If you do the research, which I have, you will note that a large number of these kids who have come in in the three aforementioned classes have offers from the likes of USC, Florida, OSU, Michigan, MSU, etc.
Don't get me wrong, admissions makes it more difficult, but it is not impossible. Weis has proven this with his recruiting success. Meyer wanted a certain number of admission exceptions guaranteed per year, and ND would not guarantee it in writing. As a result, he ended up in a better situation at Florida, which sucks as an ND fan.
To me, it comes down to player development and coaching, which has pushed me over the edge, thus calling for a coaching change.
Sorry for the long rant folks, as an avid ND fan, this situation has pushed me over the edge to the point where I almost look more forward to the summer recruiting season than I do the football season. In all essence, Weis is a Ron Zook of sorts.
Let me know if you have any questions or do not believe my argument about ND recruits not being overrated. I can tell you any past or present commit's list of offers, and you will not that they are worthy of being high level DI players, with maybe only a couple of small exceptions (i.e. the Golic boys
)
